The Hokiesports football roster has been updated, and perhaps most startling are some of the numbers at defensive line.
Every VT defensive end is over 240 pounds.
Vinny Mihota- 264lbs
Trevon Hill 240lbs
Jimmie Taylor 240lbs
Darius Fullwood 252 lbs
Seth Dooley 252lbs
Houshun Gaines 248lbs
Ken Ekanem 260lbs
I think being stronger at the point of attack and more gap sound has been a major point of emphasis this off season. It will produce just as many tackles for loss if those defensive linemen keep their feet moving at contact and cross face when the play flows away from them.
Tim Settle is checking in at 328, down from 360 last year.
Nijman is up to 300lbs. Wyatt Teller is 308.
Freshmen Thomas Hopple is listed at 6'7. Freshman center prospect Zachariah Hoyt is 6'5.

Marshawn Williams also down to 227, from 243. Isaiah Ford was on Twitter celebrating his recent increase to 195, from 190 (Fuente told him he needed to get stronger). The strength staff must be doing work. An kudos to all the guys for putting in the effort to gain or lose what they needed to.
Mihota listed as DL rather than DT or DE.
Also his roster name is Jarrett Hopple, not Thomas
Probably will play different spots based on fronts/situation, not unlike a Joey Bosa, but almost certainly not as good.
I am sure he will. I think for the most part he stays at DE since he is down in weight.
Something that will be interesting is if we use more 3 down lineman sets with him at DE and then we jump into 4 down looks against no huddle teams and slide him inside to DE and bring an OLB to put their hand in the dirt or as a stand up end. Versatility without subbing.
Who are Connor and Kevin Kish from CALI?
All I could find on twitter.

Just weird to see 2 kids as walk ons from Cali. But I like seeing bodies on the OL for practice.
Big Tim at 328 is so damn exciting
With Vinny coming down in weight, it looks like they're definitely going to keep him at DE
Woody is up right? 280 is great for his speed
Stroman and McClease at 180
Yosh is really filling out
Interesing how much Sobczak lost
Seems like most of the DTs lost weight outside of Baron. Wonder if it's just due to the new "tempo" or if Bud and Co. are trying something.
Idk about that. Tim lost weight because obviously he had to. But aren't Walker and Williams about the same? Pretty sure they were about 280 and 300 last year.
I thought Walker was around 289 but it's very possible that I'm wrong. Williams I think has been around 300.
Anybody have any idea how true these weights are? Or are they like heights that get generously rounded one way or the other.
Probably as accurate as what my wife has listed on her driver's license.
"oh no you di'nt"
Oh yes he deed!
My guess is she doesn't read TKP.
There is a discussion on another thread recently you might want to review....it might just save your life.
Dead man walking!
Settle with a 30+ drop is huge. I hope it shows on the field... the guy is so likeable.
I think we use the term "jolly"
Perfect opportunity for a corny pun.
So you're saying that Big Tim sacked a Cornhusker?
In the HokiesFB snapchat story a couple days ago, Settle made several appearances holding the phone sans shirt and he looks noticeable trimmer. You can see it in his face, he's burning that baby fat into muscle. So excited to see how this translates to the field. My only reserve is Bud discussing his endurance so he can play entire series'.
I'm so damn proud of Tim Settle. Dude worked his tail off just to qualify while schools were backing off because they didn't think he'd make it and boom - he qualifies without even having to prep. Then, he comes in and again works his tail off to lose a bunch of weight and get his body ready for the season. All of this while being one of the greatest personalities to ever grace the HokiesFB snapchat account, and he's immensely talented to boot.
Go Big Timmy.
I'm excited for Yosh to be up to OL weight. I mean the guy worked his way into serious playing time last year in his first year ever playing OL and while being underweight for the position. I would love to see him turn a corner and be something special.
Glad to see Bucky is still listed at 6'7, 245.
I don't know how they get away with listing him so far below his actual height.
They should just round it up to "towering".
Weren't Hill, Taylor, and Fullwood light last year? If so, it is a good sign that they have put on some size.
A+ all around for the S&C staff.
Taylor is a true freshman now, so he wasn't here last year. Hill definitely put on some weight, as you would expect a freshman lineman to. Fullwood already came in kinda big, but is probably stronger. Gaines is the young DE that put on some serious weight. Think he'll be important for us
I'm also excited Ken has put on the weight he has. Usually our smaller DE's get overlooked at the next level but now if he can have a big year this year his NFL prospects could be solid.
Great observation.
I can't recall the stats, but I remember that our D-Link in 1999 was big and fast and seemed to get behind the LOS regularly.
And our wireless routers have improved immensely!
...I'll see myself out.
Also I didn't realize that Evans was the bulkiest of the QB's. He has 7 lbs on Lawson even though Lawson is 3 inches taller than him but he also has 8 lbs on Motley even though Motley has an inch on him. I figured Mot had a little size on him but I guess not.
Edit: Rather than making another new post I'll just add this here...
I was also surprised to see that Kumah is coming in a little bit thicker than Deablo. Deablo has an inch on him but Kumah has 2 lbs on Deablo. I know it has been mentioned that Deablo will probably see the field a lot in part because he already has the size to block at the ACC level but it seems like Kumah may be in a similar situation.
Evans is a truck with lateral agility. Very exciting
Probably good to figure that the margin of error is likely around ~1in and ~5lb
The presumed starting o-line's measurables: Jonathan McLaughlin (6' 5", 294), Wyatt Teller (6' 5", 308), Eric Gallo (6' 2", 295), Augie Conte (6' 6", 305), and Yosuah Nijman (6' 7", 300).
Here are the ten-plus pound gainers if anyone is interested.
In related news, Tremaine Edmunds is a big-ass LB at 6' 5" 236.
He's so big he makes the shorts look small!
Wilson putting on the pounds!
Tremaine Edmunds, Cristiano Ronaldo fan confirmed.
Caption: "We are here to fuck you up."
Deshawn McClease has a Prince vibe going here.
I saw McClease at an apartment pool in Blacksburg yesterday, he was looking big (also didn't hesitate to let it be known to all that he squats 400lbs).
I see a pro wrestling stable, not four football players.
I see our very own pack of predators and two of them are brothers.
Glad to see Stroman is packing on some lb's. Feel like his size limited him at CB so far
I think that might be Facyson in this pic
100% Facyson
I wasn't talking about the picture. Stroman is listed as a 10+ lb gainer on the table above.
I just assumed since you replied to the photo comment
Height after? What do they do? Stretch them?
I think we will win some football games this year
Bold Prediction
Side note dammit Trey you should be in this picture too
The knock on Huelskamp has been his size. 222 lbs isn't huge, but it is a big improvement from where he was. Could we expect him to make a run at competing for the starting spot?
He can compete for the spot but I would give him a less than 10% chance of winning it. He is coming off another season of injuries and has significantly less game experience.
Looks like a few of them are right at 240 /s
Thought the same thing..
Yeah but those guys are young. By the season they'll be 241.
West End should be open then. Some pancakes and London Broil and they'll be good to go.
Was just about the say the same thing. I'm sure it's just a coincidence...
I'd love to see Vinny Mihota lock down the d-end spot opposite of Ken Ekanem. You don't HAVE to be able to consistently get pressure on the QB to be a starting caliber end in the ACC. Containing on run plays is equally as important; Mihota is probably the most skilled d-end on the roster in that facet. I understand Bud wants to turn the dogs loose but let's not kid ourselves...we don't really have the talent RIGHT THIS VERY MINUTE to turn the dogs loose so lets utilize what we have to the best of our ability.
Exactly, how many times last year did we see our speed DE's get turned far away from the QB as they sprinted towards him?
Thank you! It's easy to play into a speedy d-ends strengths if you have tackles who can wash them out on the speed rush. Vinny might not be the quickest but I'd wager a bull rush to a tackles chest is going to collapse a pocket while also keeping containment.
The shortest distance between two points is a straight line. Give me a hard bull rush straight into the QBs face any day of the week (especially Saturday)
It's Bizarro VT!
Is this a strategy to modify how front 4 play or the back 7? Seems like the need to play more nickel and dime defenses has necessitated a front that can basically build a wall at the LOS so the defense can play small and fast to handle the modern spread offenses.
It used to be use a quick front to force a bad throw. Now it seems like the plan is keep up in the secondary to make the QB have to progress through enough reads to but time for the line to get to him.
