As a native Marylander for 24 years before becoming a legal VA resident last year, the flooding and damage that happened over the weekend in Ellicot City is gut wrenching. I grew up about 20 minutes west and have cousins who live just outside the historic district (luckily they're all ok and don't have any home damage). I heard about the flooding and that there were two deaths, but I didn't see the photos and videos until this morning and I can't imagine how terrifying that would be to experience.
Major Kudos to those who were obviously more concerned with helping others and getting everyone to safety over trying to save their possessions, businesses, and in many cases their livelihood.

I remember 10 or 15 years ago Old Town Alexandria had a major flood.

Yea, I think it was a mixture of a 1,000 year storm along with all the new development at the top of the hill that forced all the rain and runoff to hit main street and just destroy everything. The video of the woman being rescued from her car is terrifying. It'll take a while to rebuild all the sidewalks and clean out all the buildings before the businesses can even reopen.
I'm from the woodbine/mt airy area, lived just a few min from I-70 so probably not far from you. Went to glenelg.
I even worked in old ec part time one summer. Not sure the status of that place right now unfortunately
Glenelg alumni here too. My parents basement was completely flooded Saturday night.
Jeez...I can't imagine what basements in Ellicott City were like when that much rain came down
I live in Catonsville (10 minutes East) and it was crazy localized since Ellicot City is in a valley. Place is just gone. It could be a looooong time before it ever comes back.
yea, my cousins live right outside the historic part of town on the otherside of the new shopping center and they were fine. They're at the top of the hill though.
And I have (other cousins) who used to live in Catonsville and are now in Halethorpe. One of my favorite music stores is in Catonsville!
While I absolutely cannot stand most of the state of Maryland, especially the drivers, I would never wish anything like this on Maryland or any state for that matter.
I hope the families, friends, and business owners who are affected can get back on their feet soon. Has anyone seen any donation information, similar to the West Virginia Flood Relief (wvflood.com)?

One of the victims was a Virginia Tech Grad.
What a coincidence, he was working at my grad school at University of Baltimore. I saw the news on their Facebook and off course it was a Pic of him donning the Hokie Maroon at a game in Lane Stadium.
