Coach Fuente, Evans, and Motley will address the media after practice today. I'm assuming this means they are announcing the starting QB, but maybe I am reading too much into this. This is certainly earlier than I expected a decision to be made.

Prepare for riots when Fuente announces Motley has the starting job...
I think it would be a little disappointing because we still have that unknown factor with Evans that he could turn into an amazing QB. But at least Motley has shown flashes of great play that if made more consistent, I believe could be a good starter.
Can Evans redshirt? If he can, considering what's been written about Fuente investing in the future, he might redshirt Evans and start motley?! Crazy sounding, right? But so was starting Paxton Lynch 3 years ago in Memphis.
can not redshirt as he's already used it.
I'd be disappointed only because Motley is leaving after this year and Evans has two. If Fuente thinks Mots the guy then I'm sure he'll do well
I believe you may be reading too much into this.
Pretty sure this is just a standard press conference so the media can finally talk to the players. Would be pretty surprised if Fuente names a QB this early in camp.
I agree, but part of me wants Fuente to name starting QB today, so they can get as many reps with the first team before the season starts.
I think Fuente will know the starter long before we do and is already giving snaps to whomever he thinks is QB1. The media doesn't have
muchany access to practice these days so it may already be that one of the two is getting almost all the snaps with the 1s.i saw something on here recently, but can't remember where, where Fuente said he believes in near equal reps for 1 and 2, so they are both ready.
So roughly what time is after practice?
Also, seems to be too soon before the Liberty game to announce the starter unless one of the two is hurt or leaving the program.
Jack Click to start, Leal will return as his back up.
Maybe they found another year for Marcus Vick.
Ugh, I'm afraid if that happens Lawson may start thinking about leaving... (sorry I couldn't help myself)
Fun fact: Saw Lawson in D2 yesterday. Stood behind him in line and then noticed him later sitting all by himself, sleeping (??)
This. This right here is why I come to TKP. Never know when you're gonna get the inside scoop on some really juicy hokie goings on.
Can Ju Ju hold on kicks?
Rogers or Evans? @rodfor6 is Jerod, not Sam. Unless they're announcing Sam as QB which I don't think anyone would hate
not to nit-pick here, but if Fuente had made a QB choice, don't you think he would only make that QB available to the media?
I seriously doubt any decision has been made.
Yeah, seems like it would just be an update on the competition.
I'm betting Fuente will say "will the starting QB please stand up" and Motley will get halfway up before sitting back down. Then Evans will stand up.
Fuente loves referencing old game shows.
Nicely played. Which I had more legs to award this one.
This is notable as the first ever reference to Charles Nelson Riley on TKP . Well done
Not the first reference to boobs, though.
This idea had a lot more leg when it was Rogers and Motley.
I don't recall it ever being Rogers and Motley
The thread title before it got edited. I wa thinking "why not Evans? Maybe something to this..."
Or somebody in the sports information office loves the idea of teasing us to the point of froth...
That alone is enough to fire up the fan base and man are we taking the bait. I believe we should debate this and speculate wildly ad nauseam for the rest of the day. Yeah like we need permission to do that.....
At least we won't be talking about the bag policy at Lane.
Hey, that bag rag was one of the most interesting and lively posts in months. You sure can tell when we're ready for the season to start.
If HokieNation were a fish we'd be a Colossal-Mouth Bass that hits on anything at least this size:
If it's not Lawson, I wonder if he transfers.
Hi you must be new here. Welcome to TKP. Please take the time to read other comments to make sure you aren't making the same joke someone else has already made. Enjoy your drink!
:-P
what joke? why would he transfer when he has such promise as a TE
Because we're already pretty deep at OT, that's why.
My guess is that this is just an opportunity for the press to ask each QB stupid questions that only Coach Fu can answer, and whet the appetite of the fan base. Perhaps Fuente is evaluating how they handle the press? Who knows. But I'd be surprised if a decision has been made yet.
It still amazes me that Motley is even in the race at this point. Maybe Fuente truly is a QB whisperer. Then again he might be fully aware that Evans will be starting but he's just keeping the race open for competition purposes. We will know for sure in 25 days.
I think it's for appearances only. Motley has been around forever and Evans is a newcomer (who was also hand picked by CJF). If motley isn't given what is perceived as a fair chance, I could definitely see morale issues.
Evans will be the starter but Motley will get plenty of playing time against Liberty and UVA.
Or he may have gotten better over the offseason. Players improve. It happens.
Either way, we need our backup QB to have as good a grasp of the system, execution and coaching as he can get. History has shown that we need solid backup, this competition helps provide that.
remember when our biggest question going into the season was whether the TE could actually grasp the QB role because we were sooooo f'd if he didn't due to lack of depth and talent at the position?
I prefer this current method, to be honest
Hopefully one of these guys can give us LT level of performance no matter how we got here. If we get LT 2011 performance, we will be in a BCS game.
I guarantee we won't get a BCS game, regardless of roster or performance.
Logan was around when we literally had no offensive weapons. Would love to see him going into his senior year with the current group.
More than anything, I would have loved to see what he could have done with a coaching staff who knew what to do with his skill set. Yes, lack of weapons hurt him here, but with his skill set, its mind boggling he's bounced around 3rd string QB roles in the NFL ever since he left VT, even bouncing from places that legitimately need QB help. The coaches we had at that time just flat out ruined him.
I see no substantial downside to naming a starter this early. Only thing would be tipping Liberty off, which shouldn't really matter and it's not like there's a ton of film of Motley and Evans in Fuente's offense.
This is to announce that Bucky is the new starting quarterback. I mean Durkin has moved to TE so a spot opened up.
By all means I think this one is going to be the gushy, I love the competition, all that stuff.
What if Fuente is using this as part of his selection process? Being QB1 comes with the pressure of dealing with the media. Maybe he wants to see who handles himself better...just a thought
I'll take the QB that will win football games, thank you!
Let's think outside the box:
CO-STARTING QBS
Based on what I've read from Spring, the two do have very similar skill sets, where 1 is marginally better at here and there. Either could be on the field and the same conceprs can be used by both. A two-QB system could exist because we wouldn't need a different strategy for each of them, like we did with Tyrod and Glennon.
If you have two starting QB's, you get half the performance, so
As I recall, that really worked out for UVa.
No, wait....
It was the opposing teams that it worked out for.
Maybe they will duel it out during the press conference and Hokie Nation will dial in and vote for their favorite QB!
This would at least be better than texting to choose which overplayed song gets blasted over the PA system.
Say what you will but I vote for every Bruce Springstein song that is on that vote list. Every. Damn. One.
Bruuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuce
Hate to burst your bubble but I have it on good authority that those songs are predetermined. The votes aren't even looked at.
I doubt they would force QB2 to sit at such a press conference.
what if they just accompanied him to the media portion and didn't say a word... just acted like body guards.
TROLL GAME STRONG
And then Fuente refuses to take any question about QBs..
From the song by STYX, We got too much time on our hands. Love the give and take on this thread.
I know some will disagree but I was not disappointed with Motley. I saw a player with tremendous physical ability and potential. I attribute a lot of his downside last season on the overly complicated Lefty system. I'd bet the house they focused almost solely on Brewer. It was apparent by how completely unprepared Motley was in the Ohio state game. The leaps he made in the games after were good until Miami. Miami he was looking too much at Brewer's return and tried way too hard. If he's matured in the offseason / summer he could be really good. Unlike with lefty, I trust the new coaching staff to make the right decision. If they bench one or the other it will be for good reason.
I agree, I thought Motley showed promise he just needed a system better tailored to his skills.
I'm expecting the Fuente offense to be more dependent on QB's running skills, thus, it is likely we will see both QB's this year no matter who wins out at the beginning.
I don't usually agree with cds7c but when I do....something, something, something....
anyway, I'm not of the opinion that if Motley starts it's going to be the end of the world. I do believe Loeffler's offense was more complicated to learn for the players than Fuente/Cornelsen's offense will be. I also believe that Loeffler put all of his eggs in Brewer's basket and maybe neglected Motley to some degree.
In any case, I think Motley's failures were more an indictment of the situation he was in than a lack of talent and ability so if he does indeed win the starting job I don't think he will be a bad signal caller under the tutelage of Brad Cornelsen.
I'm not going to go all doom-and-gloom and say that because of the nature of Fuente/Cornelsen's offense putting a lot of running responsibility on the QB we are likely to get QB1 hurt....but I do realize that is a possibility (and maybe a good reason Fuente has said he likes to give his top 2 QBs relatively equal reps so that they can both be ready to play) so I don't think it is unlikely that we will see both QBs this fall.
Regardless of who starts as QB I am expecting this offense to struggle during the first half of the season but show signs of improvement as we get deeper into the schedule. I don't know if this offense will necessarily start off better or worse than previous offenses but I do think by season's end it will look much more promising than it has in the last several years.
Bold Prediction Time: I think Bud's going to earn his keep this year and field an elite defense. Nobody will expect it which is precisely why I think it can(will) happen. We'll win more games this year because of great defense. The offense just has to not screw things up.
Bud Foster's defense being elite is never a bold prediction.
if you've heard the way pundits and talking-heads have talked about our football program recently any assertion that includes "VT" and "Elite" in the same breath would be considered bold.
But, given what we know about Bud, I guess you're right. I still think our defense will win us more games than the offense will this year. Next year might be a different story.
I believe you are right about that. This season the defense should bring much needed stability while the offense works things out.
Completely ignoring Pitt.
So did our offensive line...
He also had a plenty of moments of holding onto the ball too long ,not seeing receivers downfield and missing them when he did see them
Motley also displayed tremendous GUTS. Time and again last season the kid kept getting up, even severely limping during one game (can't remember which, last season was quite boozy for me), back into the huddle to lead the team. He would not back down. Anybody that puts it all out there on the field is a good hokie in my book.
When can we expect this press conference?
After practice
Ok but I don't actually know when practice ends...
Yesterday on snapchat, the practice ended around 7:30 or so. So maybe around then?
Fuente and co. can name a starter now but my gut feeling is that, in the event the starter bombs the liberty game, it will be wide open again.
That being said, it's wise to go ahead and name a guy so that they can start taking all of the first team reps as the season kickoff nears. No sense in wasting reps...the fact the competition is this close kind of leads me to believe reps with the ones are really, really important.
All speculation of course, but it sounds like they're scrimmaging today. So maybe the coaching staff does have a QB in mind that will be getting the reps with the 1st team today>
Motley on snapchat in a maroon jersey with a 'pondering' emoji. Position change??
Continuation of the QB to TE pipeline maybe?
Might be reading a lot into that. This is his last year and he is competing for the QB1 spot.
Yea. After watching it again I believe it was Mook Reynolds anyways. Disregard
That makes Jack Click QB2.
Speculation Intensifies!
Do you think he will transfer if not named QB2?
He's wearing yellow in the scrimmage.
That would be Mook.
Hey Coach... can you tell me about the qb battle? Coach. Coach?
I feel like I haven't been fair to Motley because I've been considering Evans as this underrated guy who will win Heisman and the natty we've been looking for. I haven't even begun to consider the possibility of Evans upping Motley's game and making Fuente confident in whoever he chooses. I still think Evans will be QB1 but only because Evans isn't the kind of guy you recruit to sit the bench for a year. With 2 years of eligibility left, I see him starting right away and Motley having a running role like in the Ohio State game before the season collapsed (am i the only one who thinks we win that game if Brewer doesn't get hurt?)
Why would you believe that? It's not like we had beaten them before, or had the lead at the half. /S
Phelps was totally justified when this was happening right in front of him.
I think we were trolled? Were we trolled? Yes, they trolled us!
Seriously, I'm confident with whomever wins QB1. If that guys starts clicking we have a chance to at a minimum win the coastal with the O-line and talent at the skill positions. Hell, I'd wager we go 1-1 in the UT/ND games.
