It appears the Bills have signed Tyrod to a long-term contract. Several of the articles mention his work ethic and determination as factors in his getting the job. Looks to be worth upward of $90M with incentives.

Good for him but football contracts are trash. The NFLPA need to push for 100% guaranteed or these players with back loaded contracts will just be let go after a few seasons with significantly less than the signed amount
If this happens, expect the yearly salaries of all players to plummet or all contracts are going to be short term. No one in the NFL is going to risk signing a $90 million guaranteed deal over six years in the NFL (risk of injury, etc).
Although I fully agree that owners should be held accountable for the quantity of money they waive in front of players and the way contracts are structured.

Won't happen. This is the same group whose members were taking out loans during the lockout a few years ago. They caved then and they would cave again.

There is simply no way to have fully guaranteed contracts in the NFL similar to the types you see in the NBA and MLB (and no salary cap in the case of MLB)
Lets just forget for a second that those other 2 sports have way fewer roster players and way more games to generate revenue. The simple fact is that the likelihood of serious injury in football would completely eliminate any type of deal longer than a handful of years.
Can you imagine if you can only have 53 roster players, and 5-6 of them with moderate to high $$ deals were injured for any amount of time. Your team would be literally crippled (no pun intended) for seasons.
That's why the guaranteed money is the name of the game for these deals.

They are making a ton of profit for a number of reasons, a large one being specifically because they don't allow for long term guaranteed contracts.
I can see absolutely no leverage that the players would have to change this.
No leverage? They are the employees. If they all walked out who are you going to replace them with, and who's going to pay to watch it? They have a ton of leverage if they went on strike and held strong. The trick is holding strong.
They don't get paid when they do that, and not all of them have budgeted well enough to maintain their lifestyles without their checks. The NFL brass and the owners' pockets run much deeper and can keep getting paid for awhile. Make no mistake, the players do not have the leverage they need.
I'd give it a whirl.
Of course, I'd have to get my 40 time back down under 9 sec, gain about 50 pounds of muscle, and my current 8 inch vertical leap is not doing me any favors at the combine at all.

I have been pretty dismissive of the Bills GM. I am still not sure why this is a good deal for the Bills, but perhaps if Tyrod were a top5 or top10 QB, this would be a good deal for Buffalo (to exercise the option). So the Bills have a year to try Tyrod out, Tyrod gets paid for this and last year, gets to feel like Buffalo wants him long term while he plays for a team that has gone backwards on the WR talent front from last year. If Tyrod does just so so they renegotiate. If Tyrod blows the roof off the place, the Bills exercise the option.
If that is how this thing played out it seems like a good deal from Whaley and a good deal from Tyrod's agent. Neither got what they really wanted, but they got to slap backs express love for one another and exchange gifts. When you're not getting hitched but still interested, that's not a bad outcome.

DAMN I'm happy for Tyrod. Its been a long road, but he FINALLY got his paycheck to go along with his starting gig.
a)i'm very happy for tyrod and think it's well deserved
b) it's good he got it now because if he doesn't produce at as high a level/gets hurt over the next two years he won't get nearly as much
and
c) (this is more in general than specifically at you) where is this narrative coming from that tyrod was being disrespected/grossly underpaid? he has had one good year in his career, and he got a significant pay increase following that one year. he got paid what his services were worth last year (last time the bills renegotiated a QB1's contract after 8 games, i believe it was fitzpatrick who was terrible for the rest of the time). he performed and then got rewarded (which is why he signed with buffalo over denver)

For me, the disrespect angle started from the get go when he wasn't drafted until the 6th round. Then there seemed to be a lot of talk that the Ravens were dumb for holding on to only two qbs because Taylor was garbage. Then I remember when the bills picked him up, I heard a ton of talk that they were dumb and that Rex was being rex and didn't know jack about qbs. I'll admit I've been drinking the kool aid since I started watching him when i was a freshman in college in 08, but it's just always seemed to me that they perception of tyrod had been that he's not worth a roster spot. Yet everyone who watched him at tech knew what he was capable of
Outside of the increase in salary for 1st year the options all appear to be in Buffalo's favor. He still needs to perform very well this season to get the next option to kick in.
