"A New Job Without Having to Move": Foster, Wiles Adjust to Life Under A New Boss

The Hokies' longtime defensive staffers discuss what's changed under their first new boss in decades.

[Mark Umansky]

For more than three decades, Bud Foster heard Frank Beamer's Fancy Gap drawl ringing in his ears every time he strapped on a headset.

After all, from Murray State to Virginia Tech, Foster's only had one boss for most of his adult life. So when he decided to start running through the team's radio operations with his new staff for the first time in the fourth quarter of the spring game this April, he got a bit of a shock.

"The first time I heard Coach Fuente on the headset, he was like 'Hey, Bud' and I was like, 'Who in the hell is this?'" Foster told The Key Play. "That was kind of the first time I'd heard him over the headset, the first time I'd heard a different voice for me in 35 years. That's when it really kind of hit me as much as anything."

Indeed, for the longtime Tech defensive coordinator and his fellow stalwart on the staff, defensive line coach Charley Wiles, Justin Fuente's arrival in Blacksburg has brought plenty of new sensations for the VT veterans.

"It's been great, man," Wiles said. "It's like a new job without having to move."

The arrangement is undoubtedly an unusual one for the pair — after all, how often is it that a new coach wants to retain staffers indelibly tied to the local legend they're replacing? But Fuente has long been adamant that he valued the continuity the pair brings to the defense, and Foster and Wiles alike assert that (headset surprises aside) the transition has been an easy one.

"I couldn't be more happy," Foster said. "After it's all said and done, we hired an outstanding guy to run our program and I've been really, really impressed by how he's handled everything and how he's done everything. I'm excited to be a part of it, excited how he feels about me, and it's made the transition very smooth."

Foster's late-night flight to meet Fuente for the first time is well-trodden ground at this point (Foster himself admits it's been "well documented"), but he stresses that initial conversation is key to understanding why he decided to stick around in Blacksburg once Beamer stepped away.

"We really didn't talk a lot of football, a lot of philosophy, expectations," Foster said. "(We) knew a lot of similar people, both Murray State alumni, so we kind of hit it off right there."

Wiles said his first impression of Fuente was similarly favorable — he was even struck by how much the new head Hokie reminded him of Beamer himself.

"I see so much, the competitiveness, the toughness, I see all those same characteristics in Coach Fuente," Wiles said. "And he treats you right, he treats you first class, he has the ability to make you want to get out and go to work for him, so Coach Beamer and Coach Fuente have a lot of characteristics that are the same. In fact, I'm sure one of the reasons Coach Fuente wanted the Virginia Tech job was just the culture that was built here and how Coach Beamer did it the right way by not mistreating people."

Fuente has certainly been vocal about his respect for what Beamer built in Blacksburg in the past, and Foster says that's not just lip service.

"I like what he's all about, he's got a lot of respect for what we've done here before and the tradition he's established and he wants to carry on with some of that by putting his own little twist of his own on there too," Foster said. "He's hit the ground running, hit the ground running recruiting trying to really catch up and make some headway that way, just positive all the way around."

If anything, Foster notes the change has been harder on his new boss than the staffers Beamer left behind, since they certainly have plenty of familiarity with the area already.

"The biggest transition has probably been for him, coming from Memphis and coming here, moving his family," Foster said. "So obviously he's asked me and Charley, he'll ask us about things around the university and around town, things like that."

But Fuente did bring some changes with him. Foster, Wiles and RBs coach Zohn Burden are the only holdovers from Beamer's days, after all.

"Obviously you've got to be careful, it's a new staff and a new regime, but they're wanting to put their twist on it and he retained me to hopefully carry on our defensive tradition here," Foster said. "They retained Charley and Torrian (Gray), and then he got an opportunity to go home, and he did that. But I really like our two new additions that we have defensively."

Fuente and Foster had to find Gray's replacement in a hurry, but since poaching CBs coach Brian Mitchell from West Virginia, the DC said he's come away impressed with Mitchell's Big 12 experience and his record of doing "an outstanding job wherever he's been."

The other new addition to Tech's defensive staff presents a more interesting contrast with Foster. Galen Scott ran Fuente's defense at Memphis, yet he's now relegated to a role coaching Tech's safeties and serving as assistant head coach.

But instead of that resulting in any tension between the two, Foster said it's been smooth sailing. He admits he's long considered Scott "an up and coming star in this business," and thinks Scott's immediately brought plenty to the table.

"Galen's played in our scheme, when he played college football (at Illinois State), they ran our defense, so he knows our terminology, he played one of the linebacker spots," Foster said. "He's expanded to playing a little bit more odd front the last couple years, and we get into a little bit of that ourselves, and so it's been good to kind of pick his brain to see what's been good for them, what hasn't been good for them, what's been good for us and what hasn't, and how can we put the things that have been good for us and them together.

"But I'm really excited about him. I think he's a dynamic, young energetic guy with a great football IQ and great mindset, an outstanding teacher and I'm really excited about him and the future we have together as well."

Foster points out that Mitchell has experience as a DC as well from his days running East Carolina's defense, and with "the best D-line coach in the country in Charley," he thinks the Hokies were able to "put together a dynamic staff on the defensive side of the ball."

And, thus far, he says Fuente has mostly left him alone to manage it.

"To be honest with you, the only thing we've talked about defensively is personnel," Foster said. "I think what we do and what we've done speaks for itself."

But he adds that while Fuente's changed a few things this spring and fall "as far as how you meet and things like that," he feels that "football's football when it's all said and done."

Wiles agrees with that assessment, nearly word for word.

"There's a lot of different things we're doing in the offseason, but spring ball was spring ball, coaching's coaching," Wiles said. "I coach my guys the same way, and that's, 'Work hard, every day. The message is coming from Coach Fuente, and it's exciting and our football team, I think, is responding very well and everybody's excited about the future."

Foster certainly feels that anticipation building as well, and he thinks even Fuente himself has tapped into the buzz surrounding just what this combination of stout defense and innovative offense can achieve.

"I think he's excited because when he was running the offense at TCU, Gary Patterson was the head coach there but also a defensive-minded guy, a guy with a strong tradition defensively, and you put those two things together, and you can kind of see the success they've had," Foster said.

Foster is well aware that he has some work to do to hold up his side of that particular bargain. He's got a few scheme tweaks in mind for the coming season to avoid last season's slightly disappointing results, but he doubts anything too radical is on the horizon, noting "we're gonna do what we do."

"I hope we can continue the path we're on defensively," Foster said. "Even though last year was a drop-off by our standards, you're not gonna do that for every year."

But if he can course correct ever so slightly and get his defense producing the results it managed in Beamer's heyday, he might just get awfully accustomed to hearing Fuente's voice in his headset instead.

"I'm excited about the potential for having an offense that's gonna score 40 points a game, and if we can do what we can on defense, I hope that means some special times ahead," Foster said. "We've always said as good as we've been, we can be better, and I truly believe that, and I think we can do that with this guy. His offense and our defense together and it can be a potentially powerful weapon for us down the road."

damn...that last quote by Foster...That is the most telling thing any of the coaches have said..sounds like Foster is pretty confident this offense is going to do some damage...perhaps sooner than some of us think (and I'm solidly in that camp that thinks it'll be a year or two before our offense is scoring 40PPG)

You haven't seen excessive amounts of mopeds till you have been to Myrtle Beach area. Mopes in SC don't require a drivers license or license plate, insurance or anything else, you also can't be charged with DUI on one. So all the drunks drive them around, the tourists, the people who have bad driving records or suspended licenses. The only restriction is they can't be on a highway, they still hold up traffic on 55 mph and higher roads every day.

Ah yes as someone who lived in the Carolinas for a couple years... mopeds, or as they're better known, liquor cycles.

Not sure about the dui rules for mopeds here, but anything under 50cc can be driven without a license, which is mostly teenagers (driving age here is 18) who ride two at a time on one to the beach, weaving in and out of traffic. On my commute to work they're adults who will use them to cut you off waiting to enter a roundabout.

Onward and upward

Yeah, we would win the division if that happened. But if we got 40 ppg and Bud got us back to where we used to be on D...

If you play it, they will win.

"How the ass pocket will be used, I do not know. Alls I know is, the ass pocket will be used." -The BoD

I agree completely..I've been saying for years if we could just pair a competent offense with Bud's defense we could be a really dangerous team. Bud has managed to keep us competitive in games against great teams. Like Alabama in '09 and again in '12(?). Both of those games were winnable because of our defense but our shortcomings offensively couldn't get us over the hump. I don't think we'll score 40 PPG this season...I'll be extremely impressed if we do...but I do think that if Bud's defense improves (which I fully expect it to) and we get closer to being the defense of his hay-day we have a decent shot at winning the coastal if we can just get a little more out of our offense than we have done in recent years.

Onward and upward

40ppg is what it will take for VT to be a National Title contender... with the current Bud Foster defense.

In 2015 if we score at least 40ppg we finish the season 11-1 with our only loss to #1 Ohio State. Undefeated in ACC play, Coastal champs, etc. At 30 ppg, we're 10-2 with an additional loss to ECU and a toss up against Miami., who scored 30. At the very least, Coastal Champions.

In 2014 if we score at least 40ppg we finish the regular season undefeated. At 30ppg, we are 11-1 with a loss to BC and a toss up against Miami, who scored 30. At the very least, Coastal Champions.

In 2013, if we score 40ppg we finish the regular season undefeated. At 30ppg, we are 10-2 with losses against #1 Alabama and BC. At the very least, Coastal Champions.

In 2012, if we score 40ppg we are 11-1 with our only loss against UNC. At 30ppg, we are 9-3 with a toss-up against Miami, who scored 30. We likely finish 2nd in the Coastal.

So.... moral of the story.... Even with the Bud defense taking a step back from its prime, if we break 40 every game on offense, our history shows we have a 50% chance of finishing any given season undefeated. If we break 30, we'll drop one or two, but will win the Coastal more times than not. Just goes to show what a high powered offense will do when paired up with a Bud defense. 30 points per game isn't a bar that's set too high, and should be an attainable goal, and should we get some weapons to crack 40 ppg, we're a legitimate National Championship Contender.

The thing is, if we turn things around on offense, our recruiting on defense should improve as well, and we all know what happens when we start handing Bud top talent.

That's all games, not just ACC.

At 30 ppg, we're 10-2

VT (31.0)

Onward and upward

Wasn't saying an average of 30ppg, I meant breaking 30ppg. If we score more than 30 or 40 points every game, that's how we'll do. Last year's totals were boosted up by the Tulsa, Purdue, and Duke games where our scoring for most games were averaging right around 25.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

Memphis averaged 39.3ppg over the last 2 seasons (not counting the 2015 bowl game - which Fuente did not coach).

They also scored less than 30 in three games last year. So did Clemson.

What's Important Now

Distribution will get after ya.

Whoa nice pulls, Alum. Glad to see it broken down like this.

nicely done

Good stuff, but you could argue that if we are scoring so many points scoring by other teams would likely deflate at least a little and thus we would be undefeated in all those years and four-time national champs and Stinespring would still be the OC and I'll see myself out now.

"The world ain't all sunshine and rainbows. It's a very mean and nasty place and I don't care how tough you are it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. " Rocky B.

we are scoring so many points...Stinespring would still be the OC

If the first is true, the second is false. There's no way Stinespring was the OC in the first place.

"The world ain't all sunshine and rainbows. It's a very mean and nasty place and I don't care how tough you are it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. " Rocky B.

Other factor: Teams get more conservative when they're winning, so no guarantee our opponents wouldn't have scored more if we were scoring more.

I'm betting CJF is not nearly as conservative as CFB was with a lead (not sure that is possible). We also play some teams (Pitt, GT and maybe Miami or BC this year (not sure with new coaches), that need the run to set up the pass, and if they get down tend to become more one dimensional and turn the ball over. I'm kinda okay with giving up points in garbage time as long as we are up enough to have garbage time.

-What we do is, if we need that extra push, you know what we do? -Put it up to fully dipped? -Fully dipped. Exactly. It's dork magic.

Good research/ thoughts, but an additional positive out of a competent offense is that the defense is on the field less, which most likely means less points for opposition.

And teams playing from behind tend to take more risks trying to play catch-up. That leads to more opportunities for turnovers which make the defense even better.

Because that makes what he did here so much better.

I've got nothing personal against the guy, so if he does well at BC, great for him. But he was not a good hire for this program in my opinion.

VT Class of '12 (MSE), MVBone, Go Hokies!

Loeffler's best year (Temple) was while he was under the direction of Steve Addazio IIRC. Now that the two are paired up again it wouldn't surprise me much at all if BC's offense takes some significant steps forward. BC has always had a stout defense.

That game actually has me pretty worried. I don't like the idea of the third game for our offense going up against what should figure to be one of the best defensive units in the nation. Couple that with the beef BC has on the O-line and we could find ourselves in trouble and potentially staring at a losing defensive battle. I wouldn't be shocked if we kept pace with Tennessee getting everyone hyped for the rest of the season and then turn around to lose a snoozer to BC at home. (By snoozer, I mean something like 13-10)

Obviously I hope that none of those things happen...I'm just saying it wouldn't shock me

Onward and upward

Yeah I could see that being the case as well, though I don't necessarily anticipate Loeffler becoming something special up there again. I could see us struggling in that game though.

Still, I don't think that justifies laughing at anyone who 'hated on' Loeffler when he was here. I think Loeffler earned that response.

VT Class of '12 (MSE), MVBone, Go Hokies!

I agree with you...no need to throw shade IMO. I can't ever know what went on behind the scenes but I got the sense Loeffler was never in a position to succeed in Blacksburg. The revolving door for OL coach surely didn't help the situation. I don't know what he was asked to do specifically but it's possible that he is capable in some capacities but not others. Maybe he was asked to do something he just couldn't.

I do believe that from a technical standpoint Loeffler is no dummy. He understands the Xs and Os of football. What I'm not so sure of is his ability to transfer that knowledge to college kids effectively. That may have been his un-doing.

In any case, I do think that the VT offense is in much better shape now (from a talent perspective) than it was before he got here. He may not have ever been able to produce the gaudy numbers everyone wants to see offensively - he definitely laid some ugly eggs while he was here - but there is no doubt that Fuente is inheriting a much better offense than the one Loeffler walked into.

I do think he deserves credit for laying some of the groundwork but at the end of the day he just wasn't able to get the players to produce consistently and that's ultimately why his time here should be considered a failure. I have no ill will towards Loeffler and I honestly wouldn't mind seeing him succeed somewhere (so long as it's not at our expense). The man has certainly had a rough few years and I think it would be nice to see things fall his way a little bit eventually.
