Miami's rebuilding hopes took to a huge jolt Saturday morning when red-shirt junior defensive end Al-Quadin Muhammad and senior linebacker Jermaine Grace were permanently dismissed from the Hurricanes football program for violating NCAA rules.
Some things stand out to me here. Miami is young at linebacker, glad to see the school still cover their education of they stay at Miami, weird that the NCAA will not investigate this.

To be honest, I am not sure the NCAA really needs to get involved if the coach on finding them using a luxury car kicks them off the team. Then again, the NCAA might need to be checking the other players and banning them from playing at another school until they have compensated the owner for the use.
The booster who was providing the cars should be banned from the program.
The release says no boosters or coaches involved. Just a fan then? Or random person that likes football "stars", maybe.
In the past the NCAA has had a fairly broad definition of "booster".
Normally, giving things of value to college football players while they're playing at a university would qualify as "booster", but they seem to be drawing a fine line here.
I look forward to hearing the details of this one.

Would it really matter? Have we all forgotten about all the crap Shapiro was paying for and doing and Miami got nothing as punishment.
They lost a nine scholarships over a three year period, and did a self-imposed bowl ban. Very weak considering the offense.
At least in this instance Miami was worried enough to investigate and to kick players off the team (actual starters, even). So while the NCAA seems pretty toothless, teams do have some small amount of respect for them.
Contrast that to what Penn State got and it was very weak indeed.
Also I don't think "teams" have a respect for them at all. I think Richt is a stand up guy and is doing the right thing. If Golden was still there then I doubt we would've heard about any of this.

ESPN's David Hale's perspective is "Not great, Bob!" for Miami, which coincidently is good for Virginia Tech.
First thought: Richt actually took stand against it? Good for him. #respect. No wonder UGA fired him. The one place for non- cheaters in the SEC is the bottom. Ask any big time fan. " If you ain't cheating, you ain't trying" is their Mantra. That's why RichRod is not welcome there or here. He tried, but used the wrong definition from Wiki.
Second thought: If he can still get the athletes to come to Miami, but get it to be about team, instead of selfies with boats (or luxury cars) and ho's, they will be Bak in the next 5 years. I enjoyed the seasons when we and they duked it out for the title with tough nosed teams, but I guess now we'll being fighting to face the winner of Clempson/FSU for the title.
Everything I've ever heard about Richt has suggested he's a stand up guy who tries to do stuff the right way. He dismissed players at UGA for similar things in the past, though they were much more loaded.
Also, huge props to him for not revoking those kids scholarships. In a time where you are always hearing about coaches rescinding offers because a more talented player accepts, it's refreshing to hear the athletes treated as people. I know Beamer and him were friends too.
Their athletic scholarships are gone, the school is paying for them on the academic side. These guys won't count against the cap numbers.

Mark Richt is the next incarnation of Beamer/Paterno*. He does NOT put up with crap and runs a clean program. There is no better coach for that team, I have a huge amount of respect for him, and when we went #FuenteEnFuego, I would have supported hiring Richt in a heartbeat.
Good for him. Miami WILL do well with him after he sets the tone down there.
It's a positive change for the program, that's for sure.
Yah i read an article from an ex miami player whos now coaching high school in the area and was talking about how not just Richt but the whole coaching staff has already made a huge impact on recruiting in the area. He talked about how since Richt is a Miami guy hes the only one who could come in and get respect for the way he wants to run thr program. I guess Miami was kind of a joke to the local talent who this guy said coaches would just use as a stepping stone for offers. Now with all these camps that Richt runs pulling in NFL or ExNFL Miami alumni to speak or be camp coaches, sort of sounded like the outreach of past players Fuente has done.
It wont be long until Miami is in the mix for the playoffs. And dont be surprised to see them rack up some rushing yards. Apparently theyre going heavy with 3 TE sets and a 260 pound Hback in the preseason a lot.
Miami fans and alumni also said the same thing about Randy Shannon.
Shannon, imo, just wasn't that good of a coach. He was great with getting his players right academically though.

but still lost to us all the time....I was happy with that and Jacory Harris starting for them. I was always concerned with they would put someone in for Jacory. That guys was an interception machine.
I'll always pull for Richt, but it's gonna hurt me inside since he now roams the Miami sidelines.
I feel the same way about the three Fuller boys currently in the league (Bears, Lions, and Redskins).

You beat me to it. Paterno's name doesn't belong anywhere near Beamer's. Just because Paterno had the *appearance* of being an upstanding guy for all those years, doesn't excuse him from being a win-at-all-cost monster when the light of day was finally shone on that program.
Paterno can rot in hell.

The point is that neither would put up with individual players undermining what the team was trying to accomplish, and neither had NCAA sanctions on their programs for player misconduct/violations. Richt is in the same vein.

You're right. I neglected to give sufficient credit for your asterisk in the first post. You're also right about that terrible paperweight award linking Beamer and he who shall not be named. I get annoyed with rampant cheating (UNC), pay-offs (Ole Miss), and holier than thou bullshit (ND) in college athletics. However, I accept these as unfortunate side effects of the flawed system surrounding the sport I love. PSU under Paterno is another matter all together. That program should have been burned to the ground and the earth salted in Happy Valley. Sorry Penn Staters - I know it can be painful when a long-loved idol falls from grace.

Don't sweat it, tough to discern tone and intent on the net. I think we're on the same page regarding my original intent, in that Richt will run Miami clear of NCAA problems and, in my eyes, has the same reputation that Beamer has and Paterno* had.
Just FYI, I'm a PSU grad student living in State College for 10+ years, so I am very familiar with the scenario up here and don't blame anyone at all no matter how hard they take down JVP. But I do separate the 'running of the program' portion - for which Paterno* was generally lauded, from the 'running of the politics' for which Paterno* was rightly fired...out of a cannon...and probably straight to hell.
I'm in full agreement with the original point - props to Richt for trying to instill standards in a program that has historically been one of the most renegade in college football. That's going to be an interesting dynamic to watch from afar.
Richt seems to be an upstanding coach in the same vein as Beamer.
It's probably time to drop Paterno from the good guy list, as he blew it in a big way.
