The Virginia Tech Board of Visitors is expected this afternoon to agree to make the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine part of the university.
The medical school in Roanoke was formed as a public-private partnership between Carilion Clinic and Virginia Tech and is operated by an independent board. It will now be integrated into the university as Tech's ninth college.
Tech and Carilion in 2008 formed an alliance to bring medical education and research to Roanoke. The research institute has always been part of Tech, while the medical school was set up as an independent entity. Medical students are required to do research and are accepted into the institute's labs.
Owczarski said with the medical school becoming a college of Tech, researchers can more easily serve as faculty, and students will be able to take part in research in Blacksburg.
Great move by the university. This is sure to raise our profile and provide medical students with outstanding clinical and research facilities, as well as spur research, education, and the economy in Roanoke.

This is amazing news. The options this gives the university is untold. It also means my wife will have her "retirement " Job picked out by me now.
My only concern is do they plan to leave it in Roanoke? If so this is the same thing Nebraska had issues with.
It's staying in Roanoke. No reason to spend tens of millions more dollars to just up and rebuild everything to Blacksburg, where there is insufficient space for it. Not to mention the costs associated with moving millions of dollars of research equipment.
Lots of schools have the medical school/hospital geographically separate from the main campus. That wasn't really the issue with Nebraska.
Not to be Debbie Downer - because this is a good thing - but getting overly excited about this news is like talking college athletic scholarship for a kid that's just starting to walk.
It's good for the region, good for Virginia Tech, brings more money and medical people to Roanoke.
Kid learning to walk is also a celebration.
Great move by Virginia Tech.

For someone who lives in Roanoke and is a Hokie alum, this is great news! It's never been a fun thing to have to go to LOLUVA for superior medical care.

That's true. My own dear wife (trying to keep a straight face) has stated ONCE AGAIN, that she "wants to go to a few games, this season." Funny, right after Beamer's final reg season game, she expressed interest in going to Lane. Chalk it up to LOLitis from working as an RN at the health center.
Well this is good... now we'll have high dollar doctor alumni to pull money from down the line for fundraising.... Hah!
Now we just have to get a law school and watch the money come in!

I'm hoping the DO school gets the official seal at some point also.
As far I know, the DO school in Blacksburg is "officially" not affiliated with Virginia Tech: Link Here. I don't think there are any plans to marry the two institutions at this point.
If they did, it would make Virginia Tech very interesting in the medical world- I think they would be the only school in the country with a DO and MD school.
Michigan State has had a DO/MD school for quite a while now.
Michigan State offers both.

Sweet, now there is no reason whatsoever to go to UVA.
