Main thing: a game day thread is a really bad place to try to make a statement about much of anything. Emotions are on knife's edge. It happens every game, and has for years. Sometimes people get aggravated by the combination of a rough patch in a game and then people seemingly ragging on players. Just keep that in mind.

Really happy about an offense that sets up plays. The first TD was setup beautifully.
The o-line seems to be getting beat, at best a stalemate. No push and Evans is seeing some heat.
I have a feeling we are playing 8/9 man fronts straight up to see what our Oline is made out of instead of checking into new plays.
Next week coaches will have a better idea of what they should do in terms of adjustments to block assignments and checking into new plays.

I love Beamer, but I'm glad Fuente is actually talking about what we didn't do well during that game. Frank just tended to go the "we played a great team, everybody's working hard" route.
Funny, I was about to say that although I have high hopes for Fuente as a coach, dude has zero personality. Zero emotion. And that's from several times seeing him speak.
On TV, yeah, I can see it coming across that way. I met him briefly at Fan Day and he seemed very personable face to face. I just really like that when he speaks, there's substance; it's not all coach speak.
He knows how to talk to the media.
Also, he makes intelligent statements, and is always looking for ways to improve. I'd call him "guardedly optimistic".

Let's not forget that 7 of those 25 games referred to were against teams that won no more than 2 games for the entire season. That's 28% of their schedule played against cream puffs. Contrast that to VT who only played one team with 2 or fewer wins in that same time span. It's easy to roll up points against cupcakes. See the Hokies wins last year agains Furman, Purdue, and even Memphis' AAC opponent Tulsa. Again, I have high hopes for Fuente's offense, but point totals from his time in Memphis are very inflated.
A counterpoint might be that Memphis as a team was not on the same level as Tech. The quality of opponent rises, but so does Fuente's own talent pool. It's all relative. Let's see what he can do with a Porsche 911 as opposed to a
Chevy Malibu.
Totally agree and your counterpoint is really the point that I was trying to make. Let's not get hung up on the scores that Memphis had in previous years against lesser competition. This is a completely different scenario now.
Score wasn't as close as the game actually was due to fumbles, but sloppiness was to be expected. Pretty much every team breaking a new coach has a rough first game but you can see the potential is there. On to the Vols in Bristol.

The stats say we ran for 201 yards but I didn't think the running game was that impressive. Definitely a difference when Teller was on the field, he should be starting against Tennessee.
That downfield accuracy was terrible. If he can't throw a deep ball that really limits us
Respectfully disagree. A lot of Evans deep balls looked well thrown but several times the wideout slipped or fell down. I saw Carroll fall down twice on two deep balls. Isaiah got lost on one play early on. Diablo dropped one that should have been caught. I thought Evans performed really well outside of the 2 fumbles. Which, of course, need to be cleaned up.
I'm somewhere in between--he definitely had some overthrows in addition to the receiver slip ups. One thing is clear from Snap Chat and today's game--the deep ball is definitely something they're trying to use consistently as a weapon.
I'm sure it will be used some, but I doubt we saw much of what Fuente has in mind for next week. Either way, this is going to be a big confidence boost for Evans. And that's probably good. His mid-range passes looked great from the stands. Of course it helps to have Ford out there just abusing Liberty's Defensive backs.
Good crowd today. I was very worried about the offense for the first twenty minutes of the game. We seemed to start figuring things out about halfway through the second quarter. We got at least 100 yards of offense per quarter.
The running game looked ugly up the middle except one delayed hand off.

I've looked a few times and on 247. They were discussing our game and how we looked bad (which we did), but last I looked I couldn't find any posts about us after halftime.
There's some still predicting a 21-24 point victory talking about how their oline will steam roll our dline. Quite comical. I don't have a prediction cause I think it could still go either way but after their performance against a good Appy St team and their declaration of their superior talent is laughable.
I don't know if I will rewatch this game so let me ask if anyone else saw this. It looked like you could read Teller to figure out where he was going on a play. It stood out when I focused on him for two plays where he pulled. Did anyone else notice that? He is big and physical but a good dlineman or linebacker will beat him to his spot if he is truly tipping his hand.

If anyone remembers the horrible problems we had with OL after injuries in 1997, they might also remember that J.B. Grimes mentioned the same problem with one of the subs. Called the dude "strong as train smoke" but after the season was over mentioned that he was tipping the plays.

Feel free to correct me, but after watching LU with 7 false start penalties, I don't recall us having ANY. That in itself shows some progress/discipline. I know we had a few penalties, but none that extended drives leading to scores. Would've loved to see us capitalize more on takeaways, and yes, there are things to clean up, but we did the most important thing--WIN.

You're talking about the PI on 3rd and Goal from the 5 in the 1st quarter I think. PI put the ball 1st and Goal on the 2 and they punched it in on the next play.

Yeah I said something about this in the third quarter. Weren't many penalties and I didn't notice any drive killing/bonehead penalties. Definitely a positive.
Was great getting back up to Blacksburg, glad I got to meet more TKP members hopefully no one got stuck in the nightmare that was 81 yesterday. I finally made it back to SC at 12:59 used some back road to Dublin VA and got on 81 there. Till next time.
