Guinness Records says only 130,045 at Battle at Bristol

So it looks like the official world record will be a bit lower.

Guinness's total leaves out players, the two bands, staff and media members. They only count people there to watch the game.

Ehh was there really 16000 people on both teams, bands and media? Some one is way off here! The stands were mostly full so I think the Bristol number is more like it!

Key point:

Bristol Motor Speedway General Manager Jerry Caldwell says another reason for the different count is with so many people coming through the gate, at one point they stopped scanning tickets and just let people show their ticket to get them in as quickly as possible.

26000 would be the number if my math serves me correct

We probably shouldn't have dressed 1,000 players for this game...

On a positive note, our expected number of fumbles per player is now 1/200th

Hey, one of the reasons i'm in band is to watch the game dammit. #Bandlivesmatter

Um. Hi. Former MV here. You can be damn well sure i was at EVERY game to watch. Piss me off...

The band doesn't watch the game? How do they know what to play and when?

The media doesn't watch the game? How do they know what to report?

Go home, Guinness, you're drunk.

No, I *don't* want to go to the SEC. Why do you ask?

We don't love dem Hoos.

Don't drink 6 beers while determining world record attendances? BRILLIANT!

Other than the 22 on the field, aren't the other players watching the game?

We put the K in Kwality

I'm pretty sure the back up long snapper is only on a college football team to watch the game haha

He said give to me Roscoe

I thought we let those guys coach running backs?

Maybe they discounted those who were too drunk to see straight.

In that case, they should count twice since more than a few were so sauced they had to be seeing double....

Didn't realize we have 10,000 band members

Anyone in the Corps know if y'all had tickets scanned to get in?

I think they were wearing their tickets.

Right the issue is partly that BMS didn't scan all the tickets of people coming in.

26,000 players and media. Damn...

I did my part. Had an extra from a no show, wore it around my neck and made the guy scan both.

I love a good nap. Sometimes that's all that's getting me out of bed in the morning.

Michigan had the previous record of approx. 115,000.
Did Guiness include the band, etc in that record?

... and did they scan all the tickets for all those previous records?

This definitely seems off, as the entire speedway was jam packed with people.

The Bristol Motor Speedway folks were probably annoyed at first, but will at some point realize that they can schedule a rematch in 10 years to break their own record. Stay tuned for Battle at Bristol, part deux.

Genius.

I can't believe that many people showed up for a game that never happened!!!!!!!

"Take care of the little things and the big things will come."

Can't they take the panoramic shot and count the people in it? Or were there 30,000 people getting concessions when they took it? It seems like BS not to count the band, and it's difficult to believe they didn't count the bands at other games.

Michigan and Notre Dame threw a stink about this game when it was announced. They didn't want their record blown away so maybe they convinced Guinness not to count everyone.

I somewhat believe that too. Or Bob Beamon leaps are not allowed by the gate keeper of record(s). My no basis in fact conspiracy is Guinness perceives a lower count to be in its interest since this 130k+ will be more easily surpassed and thus requiring a new entry in a new edition which will be on sale soon. We will only see incremental rises of a few hundred at a time and it will take five hundred years for the 156k mark to be attained. But by that time, the average height of a human being will be 10 feet tall and only about 40,000 people will fit into a venue the size of BMS. The real record then will be the size of the stadium required to fit them.

Is it game day yet?

There is every possibility there were more than 30,000 people in line for concessions...

I love a good nap. Sometimes that's all that's getting me out of bed in the morning.

Seems that could be part of the calculation, given the speed of the concession vendors.

I went with 10 guys, and not a single one of us got scanned going through.

@hokie_rd

10,000 HT's and we still can't hear them, so sad... ;)
