OT: Gas Shortage in VA, MD, NC and SC expected.

We got an alert today and it lead me to multiple articles.Due to a pipeline severing gas shipments to these and other states is going to go down. Thus prices will rise and some rural stations may actually run out of gas for a day between shipments. I recommend filling up now and whenever you can for the next week whenever gas is cheap around you. This will be especially important for people traveling for the game. Several Governors including Virginia's have declared state of emergencies.

A leak has caused the closure of a crucial pipeline that carries gasoline to the eastern United States, a disruption that threatens to drive up prices and leave service stations without fuel to sell.

Major metro areas that sit on 2 major interstates will probably be least effected. But when I get alerts like this there is a reason.

Fredericksburg, VA area: $1.89 Friday ===> $2.10 Monday

Yeah, RVA's up about 0.20 from Friday too

On 9/20 it is 2.01 in Richmond so up 12 cents. I have not seen any shortages anywhere. I don't know about the rural areas. I head GA was running low in spots.

Please get that hyper loop going quickly...

For real though. I hate driving between Richmond and DC. The hyper loop will be met with much rejoicing.

Seriously why is this a thread? This isn't reddit

Pour some Beer on it

There's an Off Topic forum section for a reason - so people can discuss off topic things in a community they enjoy. This one even tangentially relates to Hokie football and tailgating. This is certainly in the realm of good discussion.

And on a less serious note, you question this and not the thread devoted solely to salads? (Love that one btw)

Your OT post was removed because it was about a faked Brokeback Mountain remake.

I subscribe to the Whizzer White philosophy and check the sports pages first for news. The long lines and jump of 15 cents per gallon where I am now was quickly explained by your post. Relevant for me in the realm of getting from point A to B and back. Thanks.

Thanks , for the heads up regarding gasoline . Was wondering why prices have risen . 12 last couple days. Relevant and appreciated.

Hokie Fireman - much appreciated! I was wondering why the price of regular had been jacked up yesterday!

No, thank you.
I filled up last night only to find upstate prices up early this morning.

Glad I was able to help.

So you don't pay $5/gallon because you stopped for gas in the wrong town after the game. It's happened before.

It isn't Reddit... It's better than Reddit.

I am not sure Moe's vs Chipotle might not be a more divisive issue than cake vs pie.

Chipotle hands down, I used to live by the chesterfield courthouse, and stopped at the Moes there regularly. I liked it, but nothing special, more of a convenience thing than anything else. My wife introduced me to chipotle, and I haven't been the same since.

I actually think both are overrated, but Chipotle more so due to its popularity.

Now let the fights begin!

Went to Chipotle the other day. Limited options for things to put on top of a burrito bowl, it costs more, and they're like 0-3 against E. Coli.

Moes is the better option of the two. But just like with certain other races right now, there's more than the two options, and the third option is vastly superior. #FeelTheQdoba

I kind of hope we run out of gas so I don't have to go to work next week

I walk across the street to get to work, so a gas shortage doesn't affect me much.

We are starting to see more and more stations running out of regular gasoline all throughout VA,NC and SC. Make sure if you are near a gas station that has fuel you top off your tank.

Per WRAL, they're switching over to the alternate pipeline today, which means we should see gas stations back up and running in the next couple days, possibly with deliveries starting as early as today.

But yeah, we're already seeing stations run out in Raleigh. Not seeing the mass panic, yet (I think it was 2009 when there was a scare that caused a run on gas one day that had ripple effects for about a week) but I'm sure its coming.

Wait Wait Wait - I see what is going on here...

This story has to be a conspiracy theory started by the Eastern Carolina administration in what is the most unusual attempt to get out of playing against Virginia Tech on Saturday: "We just couldn't find any gas in the area, so we need to postpone the game" says Eastern Carolina

Glory is Forever, Let's Go Hokies!!

I saw about 30 cars backed up onto the main road this evening in Chapel Hill when I went out for a run. Another Quickie Mart had only 1 pump open out of maybe 8.

The panic is real in NC... Think I'm going to exercise my work from home options the rest of the week. People are fucking idiots. The only reason we have a shortage right now is because of the run on the pumps. By the end of the week everything will be fine, but now we're going to deal with jacked up prices for the next month or so because of this.

It hasn't been too bad in Morrisville or West Cary or South Durham.

Yet.

Fortunately.

No, I *don't* want to go to the SEC. Why do you ask?

It's pretty bad in Raleigh. My wife was caught in gas station traffic on the way home from State today with cars backing up Glenwood between 440 & 540 just waiting in line to pull into the pump. Then the station close to us is completely out, which is problematic because she's running on empty and actually had to fill up.

Just stupid. Same thing happened in 2009 when a run on the pumps started in Atlanta and people here panicked as well. Just best to sit this one out while I can.

It's a combination of things, there truly is a shortage, some stations that use certain delivery methods are not getting them, Sheetz is a big loser in VA for example. A lot of people didn't know about this issue till last 2 days (they don't TKP clearly) so stations had less supply and the supply they had was taken up by people looking to fill up.

Makes me glad I filled up both our vehicles on Sunday afternoon. My wife commutes to NE Raleigh, I commute to Chapel Hill, and because of kid schedules neither of us can afford to get stuck in traffic anywhere.

Filled up in Greenville, sc today. Only had unleaded (87) but most, if not all pumps were open but the less metropolitan areas are having trouble. I heard in the surrounding areas there were tons of empty stations on Saturday but seems to have rebounded. I didn't have any trouble getting gas in Statesville or Hillsville on my way to the game Saturday, but saw some crowded stations along the way.

Update: They have managed to fix the leak and the main gas line is going back online tomorrow. By the weekend, the whole mess with dry pumps should be over, but the price hikes will likely take significantly longer to return to where they were (some economists were predicting it to take a month or longer for them to fall back to where they were).

4VPISU's math: 140 miles left in the tank, 3.5 more commutes left for this week x 20 miles driven daily = crisis averted.

The segment of the pipeline in Alabama that ruptured causing this in September blew up yesterday.

Jalopnik: The Alabama Pipeline That Put The South In A Gas Shortage Exploded

A contracting company that was working on the pipeline yesterday had a backhoe rupture the pipeline itself, causing a massive explosion that has left 1 person dead and 5 others injured. At 4am this morning, the pipeline was again shut off to allow the fire to burn itself out. That said, the same fuel shortage that hit in September is expected to hit over the remainder of this week into next, if not worse. Also worth noting that gas prices are still about 10%-20% higher right now than they were before the last shortage, and you can likely expect to see the prices skyrocket again.

This is terrible.

Outspoken team cake advocate. Hates terrapins. Resident Macho Man Gif Poster. Distant cousin to Dork Magic. Frequently misspells words.

Wow, the picture really shows how serious this is. What kind of damage does an explosion like that do to the pipeline itself? Is the upcoming shortage expected to last significantly longer than the one which resulted from the leak back in Sept?

had a backhoe rupture the pipeline itself

Oh FFS.

Yes, that fact that this seems to have stemmed from a careless error makes it all the more terrible because someone has died and multiple others were injured.

Seriously. You want to be careless on your own time? Fine. You want to be careless on a backhoe around highly flammable substances? C'mon man.

That said, accidents happen and I acknowledge that this may not have have been the result of negligence but.....a backhoe near a frickin' GAS PIPELINE? Who thought THAT was a good idea?

So awful that people died and got hurt, my sincerest condolences to their families.

And then there's the obvious...

If a backhoe can do that to a vital part of the US infrastructure.... You know enemies of the US are paying attention to that right now...

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

Anytime anything bad happens:

You know enemies of the US are paying attention to that right now...

This is just idiotic fear mongering.

stick it in, stick it in, stick it in!

Go on... Please, educate me on how its "idiotic fear mongering" to be worried that a major weakness to the US infrastructure has been made explicitly clear by our own doing over the last 2 months, and that enemies of the US would possibly consider that a potential target down the line.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

Because you could say the same about any bridge you drive over or any number of "soft" targets

While it is sheer speculation on my part at this time, there's a pretty good chance that the one who paid the dearest price in this accident is the person operating the backhoe. If so, that operator definitely paid the price for accident or negligence, whichever it may have been. This incident also drives home the point that pipelines that carry flammable liquids or gas are inherently dangerous infrastructure. Those who may be forced to live near these things have real fears about it.

Reel men fish on Wednesdays

Per WRAL in Raleigh, gas stations throughout the Triangle are already experiencing gas shortages.

They were able to restart one line, but it only carries Diesel and Jet fuel through the region. They don't expect to have the pipeline for gasoline back online until midday Saturday at the earliest. As of now, the fire is still going from this explosion.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

Very glad, I stopped this morning and tanked up the car before I even heard about this.

So sad people were hurt and killed. Hopefully the fire and repair crews can stay safe.

A decade on TKP and it's been time well spent.

I'm going to be driving from Jersey to Florida starting on Friday afternoon. I wanted to check in and see if there's still shortage issues, and if so, which states to avoid stopping in.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Everything has been cleared up in terms of supply. I recommend GasBuddy app to check gas prices on your trip.

Thank you

Fill up in VA before crossing into NC. The prices jump up at least 10 cents/gallon because NC charges a bunch more tax than VA.

A decade on TKP and it's been time well spent.

Honestly, I never saw the shortage they were reporting. Don't think you'll be impacted

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

Since you're in Jersey, I imagine you heard that the state increased gas tax by $0.23 earlier this month, so it may be worth your time to wait to fill up until you've left the state.
