End of Beamerball and start of Fuenteball

I know that CFB is a legend in these parts. But the announcers mentioned "Bemaerball" a few times and then the sideline reporter mentioned it to Fuente right before halftime as well I believe. How long before Fuente shrugs off the Beamer influence and insists this is his program now? Something to the tune of "Beamer never beat ECU 54-17". Not that he would ever verbalize it, at least not this year, but there has to be an expiration date on the Beamer references and it will take some time. But if I'm Fuente I'm ready to take my due pretty soon. Thoughts?

Ehh, I think the term Beamerball is hear to stay. CJF doesn't strike me as the kind to need his ego scratched. He will let the work of this team speak for itself. He has been such a class act, I would be surprised if he went in for that kind of pettiness.

"Don't go to, go through"

Nope. Just like air raid etc are linked to certain coaches special teams play is forever linked to Beamer.

FuenteBall or Fu Ball is more associated with Fastpace, intelligent QB play, high powered offense.
BeamerBall will always be Special Team (specially in Blacksburg) .
Fuente is more worried about winning a national championship (filling out that empty trophy case) than replacing Beamerball.

It's the first year. The media is going to keep asking that until they find some other "go to question

Personally I think I'll always call it BeamerBall. It's a brand that he built and continuing that tradition without him shouldn't change the name. Besides BeamerBall has a much better ring to it than FuenteBall

Uh I don't know about the rest of you guys but personally I'm feeling Fuentastic right about now.

Beamerball has an expiration date at some point

Why do you think that? That makes no sense.

We won't be calling it BeamerBall in 20 years, guaranteed.

"I liked you guys a lot better when everybody told you you were terrible." -Justin Fuente

In 20 years - I bet we will be playing at Lane Stadium - Beamer FIeld. (If we don't have a new stadium - If so, Beamer Stadium)

"BeamerBall" is here to stay for a long while.

In 20 years - I bet we will be playing at Lane Stadium - Beamer FIeld. (If we don't have a new stadium - If so, Beamer Stadium)

Perhaps. And that will be the natural transition, identifying Beamer as part of our history and legacy, not as the identity of our current play. Think Bear Bryant at Alabama. They honor his memory without identifying the team that plays under Saban with the Bear.

"BeamerBall" is here to stay for a long while.

Yes. That's why I picked 20 years. That wasn't an arbitrary number. Once we have a student body that was not alive when Beamer last coached a game, he'll be a historical figure to them, not a beloved coach. They won't call running back a kick or blocking a punt "Beamerball," because they won't have any frame of reference. It's not a disrespect thing. It's just the way that the present transitions to become history.

"I liked you guys a lot better when everybody told you you were terrible." -Justin Fuente

I say 5 or less. The announcers won't use that phrase and it will slowly fade away as this becomes Fuente, Shibest special teams. To me it already sounds odd since he isn't the coach and I've been attending games for 20 years. It may get a mention if we continue the wearing of 25 by a different player every week, this may be a 1 year thing or it may be permanent I'm not sure what Fuente has planned.

People downvoting opinions they disagree with. SMH.

What is this, Reddit?

"I liked you guys a lot better when everybody told you you were terrible." -Justin Fuente

My guess is that the 25 jersey thing stops after all the players who played / were recruited by the old regime graduate. It's not special after those guys are done. Did you see Stroman point to his chest after he ran back the kick? It's because he loved his old coach. In 5 years, the kids won't have the same reverence for it.

I'm calling it Fu Ball

I know Fuente is trying to honor Beamer. But if he keeps up his current rate of improvement it wont be long until he forges his own legacy here at VT and I for one am worried once a "Blue Blood" program sees what he can do at VT they will try to poach him.

It is a natural gift I posess to create friction in sensitive situations.

All the more reasons to do our "This is Home" card stunt after every touchdown we score.

As long as he keeps winning VT will do what they need to keep him especially with the contract with Espn and acc network coming in . Coach also seems to love the community of Blacksburg.

I hope you are right. He understands he is taking over for Beamer and giving him his time to be honored. This is already his team, they've responded well so far to his coaching. Our offense! WoW what must be going thru Loefflers head seeing the boys he had in his offense last year lighting up the scoreboard! From what I've seen from teams left on our schedule so far I'm feeling good about VT's chances. Fuentes most important recruiting will be keeping Ford/Hodges for 1 more year so we can make a run for a championship! Exciting times!

It is a natural gift I posess to create friction in sensitive situations.

I don't think Hodges has any left ::sad face::

He's a redshirt junior, so he could. But Ford and Hodges are going after this year, so it's irrelevant

If Bucky doesn't cure his case of the drops I'm not sure he's leaving yet. He's an amazing athlete, but if he can't catch reliably it'll be tough to find an NFL team that'll sign him.

Who wouldn't, compared to living in Memphis.

Considering he's giving the best special teams player Beamers number every week I'd assume he's fine with it.

Rip his freaking head off!

In this case I think it is impossible to get away from it. Stroman is wearing the ceremonial #25 and takes a punt to the house. How does any announcer get away from bringing up Beamerball.

But I think they can bring up Beamerball for special teams for a bit longer.

Averaging 40 points per game on offense: that can be Fuenteball and I'm loving it.

The Dude Abides

I will bring up again that we have a habit of leaving out our offensive coordinator Brad Cornelson. I know it's Fuente's offense, but Cornelson calls the plays and he must get some credit! Long live CornBall!

It's ok to reference beamerball. That doesn't need an expiration because it truly was an innovation. However, we have to be careful to not call what we saw today beamerball. It was only like beamerball. See the difference?

"A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky dangerous animals and you know it." - K

Fuck that, beamerball is a tradition. It ain't leaving. Don't even suggest it my man.

The man was our coach for longer than I've been alive. 4 games in is way too soon to be having this conversation. He's never been anything but a positive influence on the team and university. I'm irrationally butthurt that this is even a subject. I love Fuente, but BeamerBall is a part of my childhood.

It's the House That Frank Built. I think CJF acknowledged as much when he spoke to the sideline reporter - wanting to uphold the high standard he's set, or keep Special Teams a focus or some such.

Frank's also been pretty visible these first weeks so he's a bullet point on every reporter's list. I think CJF is handling it great - he's been gracious and has given Frank every credit.

When we keep winning, they'll start writing stories about him. I love his composure, I love how focused he is on improving and how that has been embraced by the players, especially Jerod Evans. They are going to (continue to) make sweet, sweet music together. LETS GO.

I mean he's the one who had the '#25' idea. I don't think he minds at all. Beamerball is here to stay.

Beamerball is a national phenomenon. It's probably going to be Frank's lasting legacy on the sport. Before he came along, you'd throw in your third stringers and hope they could cleanly field the kick or just go through the motions. Frank knew you could change the game entirely by putting the best guys out there. VT rose to prominence in part due to this philosophy, and then it caught fire nationally. We all know Frank's impact on VT, but Beamerball is his impact on the sport.

It won't go anywhere anytime soon, nor should it.

The HokiesFB Twitter account is trying to push "HokiesBall" as a new term but I doubt it will catch on. I understand that they're not going to officially use Beamerball any more out of respect to Fuente, but the commentators and fans will still always call it that, at least as long as Frank's still around. And as others have said, Fuente seems fine with this. He is a respectful guy and knows what Frank means to the game and to the fans. Hence the #25 deal. He's paying deference to his predecessor and transforming the team in his own way. I mean, 103 points in two weeks. That's Fuenteball, or Fu's ball, or whatever you want to call it. But the bedrock of special teams is the lasting legacy of Frank Beamer, not just at VT, but in all of college football.

Fuente is playing this perfectly. A new coach has to earn his accolades, not demand them, particularly when the former coach is a legend. Fuente's work has been fantastic so far, but even Fuente knows that it would be foolish to try to put any distance between himself and Beamer. My god, Fuente has won a grand total of 3 games so far, as compared to decades of success that Beamer gave us. All Fuente has to do is keep improving the program and he will be rewarded greatly.

Time will pass, and one day Beamerball will pass into obscurity, but not for a long while.

I think Fuente is perfectly happy with Beamerball, and the Bud Foster defense.

But the offense and wins are his, including any future ACC or national championships.

I think he'll be perfectly happy as the guy that took what Beamer built and took it even higher.

I feel like that's been part of Fuente's Creed. To take us Higher. To the place where blind men see.

I don't think Fuente would have made the #25 jersey a thing if he was trying to outshine Beamer. When the reporter at halftime asked him about special teams play, he said he was just trying to build on Beamer's legacy.

"We were at the pinnacle, and we did it for years," Foster says. He pauses, nods, takes a deep breath. "And I did it with the best guy in the business."

Agree. We have to remember that as much as we love Fuente, he hasn't actually done anything worth being cocky about. A couple of good seasons in the G5, a win over Ole Miss, and a couple of QB's in the NFL doesn't exactly stack up to Beamer.

So wait...

According to the image and caption on this Andy Bitter article, Steven Peoples was playing...defense?

And Cam Phillips registered 0.5 sacks.

It's interesting we can start games with 4 punts and still be leading by two touchdowns after one quarter.

I'm for having both. We can still "beamerball" them with special teams and (I would suggest) when we score 49 or more points on them, we can refer to it as being "Fuented" or "Fu-Balled" or as "Fuentastic" as suggested by TKPers above (all great terms). We might even start a trend at TKP to say you can't "Fuente too hard". When we get the donut, we can also refer to it as being "Fostered" or "Kristy Creamed with the red light on".

"Kristy Creamed with the red light on".

One or Two K's might be good, three K's would definitely be too many.

Just skip the 3, like we skip 13. Or put them up in pairs (like Krispy Kreme'd).

On two different occasions for the White Out game, I've had seats on the press box side of the stadium in row KKK.

Answer this question.....how many of us yelled Beamerball when Stroman ran it back or either the blocked punt or FG? I know I did everytime and so for me Beamerball will be it for me for life. I don't think Fuente will take it wrong either. The guy is another class act coach.

VTMidge

Stroman started pointing to his chest (#25) as soon as he broke the plane and I don't think he stopped until the next defensive snap.

Edit: You can tell last year and the reception to the 25 jersey, that those guys really loved Coach Beamer.

They can call it whatever they want as long as we keep stackin dubs.

Yeah... Virginia Tech is Beamerball, it will never die.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

Fuente is an awesome guy... at least that is the impression I get.

Awesome guy awesome hire.

But the converse of what a technically proficient excellent football coach would sound like if he were to do what the poster suggests is absurd. And stupid.

Fuente is not stupid. And neither are we.

We can read between the lines and appreciate all the ways in which this program has been changed in the few short months he has been here. I am shocked personally that we have this amount of talent in the program. I am guessing the players are shocked as well.

Love me some Frank Beamer and Beamerball. But Fuente, Foster (and yes) Whit is saving his legacy in so many ways. Godspeed to them all. It doesn't need to be said. We can marvel at the past and the future of Hokie football now.

We are so much better in all 3 aspects of the game so far this season, especially now that we seem to have our turnover problem under control. Here's to hoping it keeps going forward and we keep kicking ass and taking names!

I can imagine no more rewarding a career. And any man who may be asked in this century what he did to make his life worthwhile, I think can respond with a good deal of pride and satisfaction:
β€œI served in the United States Navy"

At first, I was dissapointed in cjf hire, I was really hoping they would get Tom Herman.

After, seeing into his background, I really think CJF is a genuine and honest guy. HE can be counted on to do right for our program. And he will be critiqued based on what we see on the field.

Beamerball = special teams
Bud Foster = lunch pail defense
FuBall = unpredictable offense scoring tds
Tim Settle = DL wall

And we need all of them to win

Hokies, Local Soccer, AFC Ajax, Ravens

Fuente is a much better fit for the program than Herman is. And honestly, after Herman, Fuente was THE upcoming coach to have. I'm surprised you were disappointed by it.

I actually knew a handful of people who were unhappy with the Fuente hire and wanted Herman because Houston beat Memphis last season. I don't think the average fan fully grasps what goes into making a coaching hire for a P5 program.

"I liked you guys a lot better when everybody told you you were terrible." -Justin Fuente

But Herman wasn't leaving Houston after one year. So those people don't understand how hiring works. It's like the fan who posted on Andy Bitter's Facebook who said Whit should have hired Saban, like Whit can just make someone come to Tech.

Initially I was, some of it had to do with him coming from Memphis. I didn't realize how much he did for that program, in the end I'm happy.

"BEAMERBALL" is simply just a term that came around long ago because Frank did amazing things on special teams. It's us, the fans, that keep that going. If Fuente wants to keep doing what he did this past weekend with special teams then you can call it whatever you want, who cares as long as it happens. But it's not going to die as long as you have a fan base that remembers the term and keeps calling it BEAMERBALL. That's not really up to Fuente or anyone else, so he might as well just embrace it. The only way he won't hear about it is of he doesn't do fun and amaIng things with special teama, and who wants that?

I love a good nap. Sometimes that's all that's getting me out of bed in the morning.

Not just the fans, but also sports analysts.

It wasn't just special teams, but using special teams as a way to consistently win games.

I believe "Beamerball" was enshrined in the college football hall of fame. It's not going anywhere.

"I'll put a quote here to distract you from my inane comment."-Me

Yep. My wife and I took our boys downtown to the CFB HoF in Atlanta this past spring and a plaque with Frank and the term "Beamerball" is in their exhibit regarding major innovations in the game of football. IIRC, it's right there with the proliferation of the forward pass, major changes in offensive & defensive philosophies, and the like. "Beamerball" doesn't literally mean VT football with Frank manning the helm anymore...it means achievement in special teams play.

But that term is only specifically used watching Virginia Tech play you don't watch some random SEC game in they say that's Beamer ball If a kick gets blocked. It's not revolutionary style like the wishbone or the air raid or the spread or the run and shoot, terms that are used across many types of school and are not specific to one person/place.

There will always be Beamerball; but the Beamer era is over. This is the start of the Fuente era.

Doesn't matter if it's cake or pie as long as it's chocolate.

With our new coaches our offence is not FUBAR anymore.
