One thing I noticed on Sat

ECU was my first home game of the season.

When the team came out of the locker room after half time they did organized warmups with the strength and conditioning staff leading it. Nothing crazy, but the stretching and jogging were organized.

I don't think I have ever seen that. Usually the team runs out, does their own thing, and then starts the 2nd half.

It showed an attention to detail that I think this new staff has brought to the program.

He also gathers the team on the sideline before heading into the locker room for halftime.

It's such a small thing, but no joke it's one of my favorite things he's added. Other than the fact he's got an offense that is scoring like crazy, of course.

I love that added touch to build team camaraderie.

Go Hokies!

I'm wondering if the team goes over to the band after every game and sings Tech Triumph. I've seen it on one video, but I'm not sure if they're trying to develop into a tradition or not. If so, would be great for the fans to stay and join in as well.

They've done it after every home game so far - but they were all also wins.

And how nice is it that Tech has now won three games in a row at home! That is more wins total than they have managed for the last two years!

Are you thinking of the P5 games, maybe? We won more than three games at Lane from 2014-2015.

I thought they were singing the alma mater?

I'm in the MVs, Fuente brought over his tradition from Memphis in which the team sings the Fight Song with the band at the end of every home game. We had to quickly teach everyone in the band the song in band camp, as most people, including the returners, didn't have much memorized at all.

Good to know - thanks Socarch!

There was this one time in band camp...
where we memorized the Fight Song.

And then, there was this one time at band camp.. I put my flute....

I'm surprised. Learning the fight song and alma mater were almost day one at JMU (and in HS). I thought this would be standard practice. Of course at both places we also sang it during the pregame routine.

Edit: Day one as band members, not sure about rest of students, but it was an integral part of game day. Seniors/upperclassmen were responsible for a number of things at band camp, one of them making sure the freshmen knew the words to both. I knew the FS before I even got there from hearing it on CDs (the pregame version where we sing is always included in the annual recording session).

yeah tech students don't know the words to any of the songs

That other band (the Highty Tighties) knew the words to the fight song on about day 3. Likewise, the non-band cadets in that endzone also know the words. New cadet knowledge. I'd like to see them do this with the cadets on alternate home games.

Yeah, every cadet should know the words to Tech Triumph, Old Hokie, & VPI Victory. Can't speak for Moonlight and VPI (Alma Mater).

We're able to learn it because the adage is, if the mind cannot comprehend, the body must be punished. The Corps has a lot of options and creativity when it comes to that.

A decade on TKP and it's been time well spent.

Cadets learn Tech Triumph as freshmen before the first home game. I haven't retained most of my new cadet knowledge, but I still remember all the words to Tech Triumph along with the 8 pylons and the 7 Medal of Honor recipients.

Absolutely no one knows the words to our alma mater.

"Sing praise to alma mater dear,
For VPI we'll ever cheer,
Come lift your voices, swell the (or this?) song,
Our loyalties to her belong.
(blah, blah blah, can't remember this line)
VP, all hail to thee."

Or something like that. It's been 35 years.

And I rest my case. It's been nearly 50 years for me, but I never learned them even then, so they must not have been part of the "rat information" overload at the time.

I noticed it after they emerged from the locker room at halftime at Bristol. Didn't see it at the Liberty game or pre-game before the BaB, and haven't made the drive from upstate NY since then so I have no information about the last two weeks.

Oh, neat! I technically live in Albany, but I'm much closer to Guilderland than pretty much anything in the city.

And after taking a closer look at your profile I get the feeling that we might work at the same site.

Let's just say I'm TC-4 in Bldg. 76.

I don't know what TC-4 means, but I've walked past B76 a few times haha. I'm an engineer in Mod-1 next to all the construction.

Let's Go

HOKIES

I've seen position groups do warm up together, and maybe the entire O/D do it together, but not sure about the entire team. Then again, I always was pretty drunk in the stands.

The one single thing I have noticed most this season: this team is mean. Not like, they have "swag" or a chip on their shoulder...just mean. It's been a long time since I've seen legit gang tackling all around the field, like they want to take someone's head off. I really, really like this team right now.

Amateur superstar and idiot extraordinaire.

Watch how they finish their blocks on offense. These guys....shall we say...are getting after it.

This team loves to play together. Fun to watch.

Another small observation about this staff's attention to detail: noticed on several occassions we were able to draw offsides penalties by having an offensive lineman tap a defensive player who crossed the line. Even if the defensive player was jumping back, contact immediately stops the play. Whoever taught our offensive linemen the simple trick of tapping an intruding defender was brilliant! I know I saw at least two or three penalties called on ECU because of this.

Tag! You owe me 5 yards!

I know it'd be taunting, but I'd love the O-Line as a whole to Mutombo the defender after they tag him.

A decade on TKP and it's been time well spent.

That's interesting, I wonder why that isn't considered a false start?

Deposit whiskey, receive wisdom.

If a defender encroaches into the neutral zone and causes an offensive player to react, it is an offsides/encroachment penalty on the defense.

If a defender moves laterally without encroaching on the neutral zone and the offensive player moves, that is a false start penalty. Our defense's late shifts have been creating a lot of these penalties this year.

A decade on TKP and it's been time well spent.

Because the defender's intrusion offsides or into the neutral zone incited the offensive player's movement.

Whoever taught our offensive linemen the simple trick...

Defenses hate him!

My guess it was this guy.

I'm thinking the school needs to offer one of those fan experience deals as a fundraising incentive where you get to hang out and drink beer with Vance Vice. And maybe watch Roadhouse or Smokey and the Bandit.

I am thinking they should offer this jacket for sale in the Bookstore.

Plan for the worst and hope for the best, not the other way around.

With an embroidered VT logo and appropriate branding as Vance Vice's "leather" sauna jacket, they could probably sell 1,000 or so.

I have this crazy vision where you show up at Vice's house and realize all the bookshelves are lined with Nietzsche and Kierkegaard, and he has the best stocked wine cellar in the NRV.

2018 4 star WR Tre Turner goes to my old high school. I texted one of my old coaches about where Tre was leaning. He told me he showed Tre my text and said he hasn't made his choice and isn't leaning any particular way, but he has narrowed it down to Tech and UNC.

Hope he comes to the good guys. He's been tearing it up for the Nats!

In all seriousness, I got to see Trout play in Boston this year...up till August, he was easily the fastest person I'd ever seen live get around the bases. The I finally got up to a Nats game this year (#GoNats)...Turner runs circles around him, holy moly that is one fast dude.

Haven't seen him live, but I've seen him a ton on tv. He's legit. I hope he keeps it going in the playoffs!
