So, as an advocate for the neo-classical sugary coleslaw chili dog, I have longed for a good slaw dog here in Northern Virginia. Sadly, trips to recommended places like the Vienna Inn (great service, not so great chili and slaw) have come up short.
Are there any decent hot dog joints around here?

Closest place I know of that has the best "this is absolutely horrible for your health" burgers/dogs/onion rings is Circus Burger in Raleigh, NC.
Otherwise, find a drive-thru Cookout? The ones with indoor seating just don't feel right.
The best place that I know is Ben's Chili Bowl. It is in DC though. U street up in Shaw. Their hot dog chili and slaw is a marriage made in heaven. Fries are good... They have the best sweet tea in DC. Hell, the crushed ice is even awesome.
With all of the amazing food in NOVA, I would just try to hold down the hot dog craving until a later date... Sorry I am no help...
French, what are your specifications for said slaw dog? Spicey chili? Mild? Beans/no beans? What about the slaw? Dog brand?
Super-sugary slaw. Thick chili (beans, veggies, ground beef.) I like Valleydale wieners but you can't get them up here.
My favorite hot dogs have been
1) a convenience store in Konnarock had the best ones. Unfortunately it was closed and reopened years ago
2) Stewarts in Huntington WV
3) Skeeters in Wytheville
It's pronounced Whiff-ville.
Kevin
Love it. Every Time!
Whuffle. FTFY
You talking about Weavers Store in Konnarock?
Yup- back in the early 90's those dogs were amazing
That's awesome. I graduated high school with the owner's son. He actually attended and graduated from Virginia Tech also.
Nothing beats a dip dog! French I know you love these!
Preach!
Sorry, I know this is blasphemy , but what is so good about dip dogs? I tried them once and was so disappointed that I only ate half of one and threw the other one out, and I despise wasting food. I was mostly turned off from the dyed red hot dog color. Please tell me why these are so popular, it has been a mystery to me.
Fried food and mustard. Honestly I don't get it either but I love em, but only like twice a year because my gallbladder can only take so much.
Anywhere except the airport.
I like Portillo's dogs quite a bit.
And a chocolate cake shake.
do they have chili-slaw dogs in Chicago?
Believe it or not, they do. Hot G Dogs (successor of the legendary Hot Doug's) does varieties of dog from around the country. I've seen em other places too. You can also find slaw dogs made with Coney sauce, which I prefer to most southern style chili dogs.
My daughter and her buds swear the best hot dogs in the world are in Iceland.
I was in Chicago last week. Can attest that you are correct.
Hot dogs are my favorite kind of sandwich.
This is a great question. I've lived up here (NoVa) for 12 years and haven't found a great dog (several good, none great).
Excited...and hungry...to here some options.
Side note - to myself - I like Stop In dogs when home (Radford). Really miss the Dog House in Rad-Vegas.
MissSusieCue is sold on Haute Dogs. "OBX slaw" (even though I love the OBX) isn't our kind of slaw though.
Haute Dog and Ben's Chili Bowl would be my 2 suggestions
Ben's Chili bowl: seconded. Doesn't sound like what French is looking for, but It's an experience. No beans in their chili IIRC. Haven't been to Haute Dog, and I live in OT. Good reviews, people like to complain about their prices. It's in Old Town, duh.
bens chili bowl would be my choice. good stuff there.
I have been to Ben's many times (we used to take students there as part of our community site visit program.) I ate there once or twice and then learned that going to the ethiopian place across the street was a better deal/food. I like the half smokes, but I don't like their chili.
MissSusieCue ate at HauteDog today and sent photos to upset me.
Got food poisoning the last time I went to Dukem. Never again. I actually haven't had Ethiopian since but would try another place.
French, look no further than Windy City Red Hots. They have a truck set up right off of Route 7 in the Ashburn area. By far the best Hot Dog that I have had in this area. They also have a brick and mortar location in Leesburg, if you are ever out that way.
I saw a few other posts about Chicago style hot dogs- and this place truly does Chicago style dogs.
Their truck is in the parking lot of Bluemont Nursery. It is just past the exit for One Loudoun on Rte7. If you make it Ashburn Village Parkway you have gone too far
Windy City is fantastic.
Have you tried the Beenie Weenie in Arlington/Shirlington area? I've never had a hot dog there but their sandwiches are pretty good.
Also, hell yes to both Skeeters and Dip Dog. (My wife is from the Wytheville area and has family in the Rural Retreat/Abington/Chilhowie area).
The hot dogs I've always liked best are Hebrew National (or really any Kosher hot dog). The best cole slaw is vinegar based like the barbecue you find in North Carolina (another good reason for going to football games in North Carolina). Stumbled into some good places going to a game with N.C. State once.
My personnal favorite Beenie Weenie taste treat is to mix Bush's baked beans with Hebrew National hot dogs (boil the hot dogs first separately in water for a few minutes, then take them out and cut up prior to mixing with the beans), pour some honey on top, heat to boil for a couple minutes and then at the last minute add a little catchup. Mmmmmmm good. The molasses that comes in the baked beans can helps too.
Nat's park has some pretty good ones but you have to pay to watch baseball to get those
The only wieners in NoVa I know aren't good at all. However, they did just beat Central Michigan.
French, have you ever had the pleasure of having a Martinsville Speedway Hotdog? Simple, but by and far the best dog I have ever had. And the best part is they are cheap.
sadly no
I am getting way too hungry now and really need the end of October to get here.
French, I've never been, but if you're ever out my way (Leesburg) I've heard good things about Windy City Red Hots.
I feel like there's a penis joke in there somewhere.
I much prefer a slaw dog to what we have here in the northwest. Everyone loves the Seattle Dog - hot dog with cream cheese and jalapenos. Doesn't do it for me.
Trust your feelings.
Breadsoda on Monday's has the best chili dogs I have ever had. They are located on Wisconsin ave so I don't know if you are willing to venture into DC. However, if you do make it up there, they also hold trivia night on Mondays. 1st prize gets $50 off their tab. Second place gets some sort of swag (full bottles of whatever liquor sometimes, sometimes its glassware, really whatever companies give the bar to hand out), and best team name gets 10% off their bar tab. And damn is it a good dog.

All beef hotdogs.
Order.
Cook.
Eat in NOVA.
Its the only way.
Unfortunately the best dog I have had in NoVA was at The Weiner's Circle in Herndon and they closed down earlier this year. It was a great place to go grab lunch at work. Windy City Red Hots is also pretty good. Ben's Chili Bowl is great as well but about the only time I eat there is if I am going to the Nats game.
Yeah, The Weiner's Circle was my goto place for dogs. Sad to see them go.
Try the Wiener Circle in Herndon at intersection of Sunset Hills and Herndon Parkway. Nevermind, someone just beat me to it and I did not realize they had closed.
I was going to recommend the Weiner Circle in Herndon but see that it is now closed. Was a good place to get a dog for lunch.
Edit: Crap I guess I'm drinking twice.
Are you legit claiming Skeeters, right now?
Not claiming, merely posting the first slaw dog photo that looked legit in my google search, and it just happened to be Skeeters.
Can we get Steve's Dogs to come back? I miss that place. Loved those Dogs...
I worked there form '89-'92 while I was a student. (It changed names to BoJo's around 1990). The brand of dogs we used were Gwaltney.
