State of emergency declared for NC in anticipation of Hurricane Matthew

Emergency Declared

I wonder what the chances are that this has an effect on the UNC/VT game.

Does the NCAA have a policy when it comes to hurricanes? I could only find stuff about lightning and delaying the game.

Or does anyone know what's happened in the past? Are games just cancelled forever or can they move up a day...they could always play in Lane.

At this point in the season the VT UNC game looks like it will play a factor in deciding the coastal division. Worst case scenario is the game getting rescheduled somehow. The last VT game that was cancelled due to weather and not made up was in the early 2000's against Georgia Tech when Lee Corso's car got struck by lightning. At that point that game wasn't in conference so it wasn't super important to make up.

"Hokie religions and ancient weapons are no match for a good blaster at your side, kid." Han Solo

Yeah GT came to my mind! Thanks for the information guys.

I would think that the easiest solution would be to simply move the game to Lane. It would have the least impact on the ACC and ESPN schedules. The second option would be to play it at a different time and/or day.

Since we've already had a bye week, there's no other weekend to move it to.

Make it general admission for students. That would be great

Blacksburg may get some pretty nasty weather too, though. Depends on what this storm does.

I don't think Blacksburg will be bad. The front will push the storm off to the NE after it makes landfall.

Chapel Hill will be worse than Blacksburg.

The NCAA is known to be fairly lenient on Hurricanes and they completely turn a blind eye for tarheels

Hahahahaha.

Nice.

Leonard. Duh.

I have a #sauce(s) and it is possible the game will be moved to friday night. Very much just a possibility though...nothing concrete.

They should move the game to Blacksburg. Lane Stadium and field can handle the water, remember the Miami game of years ago. The underground hydration/de-hydration systems works to perfection. Bring it home...to Blacksburg!

That's what happens when people with actual degrees design your field.

Or does anyone know what's happened in the past?

Younger Hokies might not be aware, but VT played a game against Texas A&M in the remains of a hurricane in the early 2000's at Lane. Maybe the NCAA policy is if they can swim, they can play? As long as Lee Corso's car isn't around? The water pouring down the stands was insane, but it was a great game atmosphere. A punt was almost the most dangerous play in the game because the wind was swirling so strong, nobody could figure out where it was going to field it. I know A&M fumbled one, maybe two during the game. Pretty certain D.Hall muffed one too.

I'm still waiting for my BCA game refund from that cancelled game, by the way.

Goodness that sounds intense! Great detailed post of the game. I can imagine being there for that.

I believe that was Isabelle. I had gone over to my father's to watch the game because we had lost power and as soon as the game came on so did he. Ended up listening to it on a battery operated radio. I remember Kevin Jones having a big game. The hurricane wrecked the central VA area. We were out of power for 16 days.

Even when you get skunked; fishing never lets you down. 🎣

I was doing the same. I was in Norfolk during that storm and cleaned up debris for a week!

I was 7 and was listening to it on a battery powered radio as well, beside a candle. If I could go back in time I would have loved to go to that game.

Fire Whit.

I was 10 when Isabel rolled through but I remember all of the debris and damage. She was the strongest storm of that season but if I remember correctly I think she had dropped to a tropical storm by the time she hit Hampton Roads.

Gotta say, having the NC coast to take the brunt of the storm has probably saved Hampton Roads a lot of money and probably lives too. Seems like every hurricane I can remember that actually hit the area skirted the coast of SC, made landfall around the Wilmington area and headed straight overland through NC and VA.

I remember that aTm game (somewhat). It was a day after my 21st birthday. Great memories.

Apparently not good enough if you still have memories

Yep, 2003. Ship just pulled in (right behind storm) and I was by myself in Virginia Beach (wife was up in Shenandoah County where it was "safe"). That storm didn't do the typical northeast curve, but barreled inland sort of north-westerly.

We'd lost some shingles & siding at the apartment, but there was worse damage around. Not sure if that was the same storm where half the cars at the base were under 6 feet of water (we got pictures on the ship and couldn't do anything but watch).

Yes very much so. We just used latex house paint so it came off in a stringy mess. At least we didn't have to clean it out of the drains in east AJ afterwards.

Good memories there - we knew that paint was coming off in short order, but that never stopped the Navs from having a painted contigency. A close second to how wet I was that game was I think BC 2007.

That was my Rat year in the HT's and they wouldn't allow us to do our field show since they were concerned about the band doing damage to the grass(?). After we did The Walk they allowed us to put our rain jackets on over our Dress A's but by the time we got to them in the stands they were soaked as were our blue blouses so they did nothing.

Still had a good time and it was the first AME game I saw and it looked so badass. It was the wettest game I experienced until 2007 Boston College. Fuck Matt Ryan.

Yep, Isabelle. That was a crazy game. I have never been so drenched in my life. Granted, the remnants of Isabelle that we got in Blacksburg that year I don't believe will be on the same level as what we're looking at this weekend, if the storm stays on course.

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

Was there for Isabell. Great crowd and incredible water flowing down the East side. However, because of the raised field, water on the field was not an issue.

Plus we have a very good drainage system on the field. I think during that game they said it was capable of dealing with 16 inches of rain per hour because of the vacuum system. Assuming it's still able to handle that much water today.

Yep, I was at that game and BC in '07. I knew I had a memory of rain water flowing past my feet but I was young. Wore a pair of Nike Shox or something that were porous and was drenched from head to toe even with a jacket and a poncho on. Everybody stood the whole game. Awesome memory

That A&M game was fantastic. I was only 11 or so, but I remember my dad convinced my mom to let him take my brother and I to the game to "get away from the storm" in Richmond. My mom had zero interest in attending, but wow that was fun. We just pummeled them in a complete downpour. And by the time I got back home, the storm was gone.

"That move was slicker than a peeled onion in a bowl of snot." -Mike Burnop

That game was so much fun. My fraternity even tailgated for that game in the very back of the commuter lot. That basically consisted of us standing under a tarp strung between two trucks drinking a ton beer and eating Doritos. We had a far more elaborate menu initially planned, but it got scraped. A few us sprinted to the Burger King in GBJ to get something hot to eat.

The game itself was amazing. The atmosphere was crazy. I was in the NEZ which had basically turned into giant slip & slide. Definitely lots of people falling while trying to jump for Enter Sandman. Certainly a game I will never forget.

I miss that burger king so much. I'm pretty sure every time we had a group meeting upstairs it ended with a double whopper. No way you could smell that for an hour and not be hungry after. Subway bread smell just doesn't stack up at all.

It was definitely Isabel in 2003 on a Thursday night. We were huddled around a radio in our neighbor's house listening to the game, I distinctly remember hearing about the "onside kick" caused by our kickoff (into the 35+mph winds) flying over all the blockers and turning back upfield before bouncing. The returners couldn't get to it, and the blockers weren't looking for it, but our players saw it and fell on it for great field position.

I need to go back and find a replay for that again, it's been a while.

Hurricane Isabel. Couldn't have been more convenient for me: I evacuated the OBX to Lane Stadium for the A&M game. The energy in the stadium that night was amazing.

Damn the heels are so scared of us they conjuring up a hurricane? I thought that was just a da U tactic

I can imagine no more rewarding a career. And any man who may be asked in this century what he did to make his life worthwhile, I think can respond with a good deal of pride and satisfaction:
β€œI served in the United States Navy"

So how far in advance do they make a decision concerning a change in game location, ...if it comes down to that??

It will have to be soon so that Tech can make sure they have a fully staffed stadium, security on hand, etc. Lots of logistics to figure out, especially if the regular game day employees were planning to have the day off.

Can't embed cause I'm on mobile but VT twitter just tweeted that they'll keep fans posted about any type of contingency plan. They're definitely aware of the possibility. Seems like it would be smart to start making preparations, even if it doesn't end up happening

I remember the Isabelle game very much too. We were living in Newport News then as soon as we heard the storm was headed our way, the wife and cat packed up and went to Winston-Salem and stayed with her daughter & son in law who were doing their Masters at Wake. I stayed to "protect" the house. Wife said, "what're you going to do - go up in the attic and hold the roof down?" NTL, minimal damage occurred and I listened also on a battery radio with signal going in & out. Unbeknown to me, she called her sister in Michigan & got her to tape the game & overnight it to me so I got to watch it 2 days after the storm. The kids were at the Corso game and got caught up in the swarm trying to leave Lane & her dau had a panic attack right in the middle of the bumping & banging crowd.

BroncsZoo

I was in Newport News also. I had graduated in May 03 and was living with my parents at the time. I was going to go to the game, but my dad took me up on the offer to stay and help. I figured I'd watch on TV. We lost power. I had to listen to the game on the radio.

BAD NEWZ STAND UP!

That was my junior year at Tech, and I was in those stands. I remember calling my dad right before gametime to see how things were back at home... and his phone cut off maybe 3 minutes into the conversation.

I still enjoyed the game immensely, but that was a bit unnerving.

No, I *don't* want to go to the SEC. Why do you ask?

We don't love dem Hoos.

I heard about this on NPR yesterday. It's a preemptive measure to allow NC farmers to get their harvest in before Matthew hits...if Matthew hits. They still aren't sure of the storm's track yet. But declaring a state of emergency lifts all size, weight and hours of service restrictions on agricultural vehicles. It also allows the state to invoke price gouging protections, so gas stations can't sell gas at five bucks a gallon and grocery stores can't charge ten bucks for a loaf of bread.

This is a strategic move, not a reactionary one.

No North Carolina... No Krispy Kreme. You're welcome.

Looking at the weather situation through my no-meteorological-credentials-whatsoever lenses, it looks like Chapel Hill will mostly be affected during the early to late afternoon hours.

I would imagine, if any pre-emptive schedule change is being considered, contingencies should be put into place for a 7:30 - 8:00pm kickoff. ESPN could bump the ESPNU game to ESPNNews, and show this one on the U.

Leonard. Duh.

I would venture than moving it earlier would be better for the state if the game stayed at Chapel Hill. Law enforcement and fans (of both teams) would be more concerned with cleanup, power outages, and looking for lost people at 7:30 pm Saturday.

I upvoted him, mainly because my home state of North Carolina deserves all the bullshit thrown their way for this.

A decade on TKP and it's been time well spent.

Politics more important than community rules. Got it.

Eh, that joke had minimal political content. The only way politics would get involved would be if some dingbat with no sense of humor couldn't control themselves and launched into a politic tirade. I like to think that folks here have enough self-control/social awareness to avoid that.

The Community Guidelines say "Don't discuss politics or religion." It doesn't say that "a little politics or religion is ok until it baits a conversation about politics or religion".

Ergo, don't talk politics or religion on TKP

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

And there isn't any discussion going on. A joke and having a discussion is different and is usually predicated on multiple participants.

I agree that no one wants to see political/religious discussion, but the joke is different and is easy to differentiate from a serious attempt at conversation. I would have thought this was a particularly easy example to decipher.

It's dead-red politics season in the real world. I, for one, don't want any part of that coming here, period. End.

It's one thing to use a well-known trope to comment on something, e.g. "Make VT Stick It In Again" is topical, neutral, and funny as hell. It's another to just try to make a joke about a controversial topic for the hell of it when it's completely unrelated to the topic at hand.

"Exit light..."

I suppose, I guess some of us just disagree a little bit.

So according to you, a political joke does not break the guidelines, because, semantics?

I'd politely request the moderator jump in here and clarify this point for you.

Yeah, I understand it, certain topics can get nasty, just believe there is an ambiguous grey area of sorts. Regardless, I mainly lurk and upvote stuff, and upvoting stuff isn't against guidelines.

I gave him a leg too because I thought it was harmless and funny, but I agree it only takes one comment taken the wrong way before the unproductive political discussions arguments begin.

It was a joke about bathrooms in NC, and therefore was a bit too political for this venue.

Hey I thought it was funny but it has no place in here.

My brother-in-law is getting married in Virginia Beach this weekend and they're honeymooning in Aruba, which was hit by the hurricane AND my name is Matthew. So I'm going to be a popular guy this weekend!

Have fun in the wind and rain. I live in Chesapeake and am glad that I will be attending a conference in Blacksburg this weekend instead of being at home!

I imagine they'll have to pull the trigger today or tomorrow at the latest if they're going to move it to Lane, which makes the most sense to me. We'll just be the "away" team...lol.

Sh!t it'll be an emergency next Saturday when we hurricane up into Northern Carolina and dump forty inches of points on the Tar Heels. Better bring your umbrella Northern Carolina. It's going to be windy in the stadium, too, because of the hurricane.

This analogy didn't go as far as I would have hoped.

Hmm, I don't particularly like any action the Hokies do being described as "Hurricaning"...

hey man, you did better than any other horse could.

While the headline is flashy, as IllinoisHokie said, if you read the article even the state doesn't even seem to think it's very likely to happen. This is just a precaution so that farmers who have already had significant crop damage this year due to storms can work like crazy to get their crops planted before the storm comes in, just in case. It also prevents price gouging, in the event that something does happen.
From the governor, "We're going to do everything we can to be over-prepared and hopefully underwhelmed".

Since the possibility exists, what's the protocol for flipping the game site to Blacksburg? Do we get to perform normal home game festivities (sandman, Hokie walk, HTs, etc) or will it be "neutral"?

A lot would probably depend on resources and weather in the burg. If there's any significant rain, they would probably forgo any pregame/halftime performances. At best, the bands will play in the stands.

Beyond that, I don't think there's any precedent for Tech flipping a game site.

So does anyone really know how likely it is that the game will be moved to Blacksburg and when the latest they would announce that would be? I'll already be on campus for the fall open house this weekend that ends at 3, just in time for a 3:30 game. I'd imagine there would be a lot of others at the open house that would be willing to stick around for the game if it was moved as well.

So does anyone really know how likely it is that the game will be moved to Blacksburg and when the latest they would announce that would be?

No and no.

Is there a chance that the game may be moved to Friday night in Chapel Hill? Didn't a game get moved up last year because of a hurricane?

Could the game logistically be moved to Thursday or Friday night? I assume they would have to make an announcement by tomorrow morning, I just don't know how much that throws off game preparations and whether everybody could get there in time.

EDIT: Just checked the schedule and realized that NC State, Duke and UNC all have home games this weekend so I am sure the ACC office is scrambling.

For those wondering, I highly doubt this game gets moved to Blacksburg, if only because of the ripple effects it will have with the other games in the area

NCSU is home on Saturday against Notre Dame at 12:00
UNC is home on Saturday against Virginia Tech at 3:30
Duke is home on Saturday against Army at 3:30
Wake is home on Saturday against Syracuse at 7:00

Not to mention
South Carolina is home on Saturday against Georgia at 7:30

If you move our game to Blacksburg, you have to move the others. Duke and Wake moving probably isn't a big deal all things considered, but you just know that NCSU would throw an absolute shitfit if they lost their once in a blue moon chance to play ND at home. For that alone, I can't see our games moving.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

I think the call to move the game would ultimately come down to UNC and VT. I can't imagine they'd move it if one of the teams said no.

2026 Season Challenge: TBD
Previous Challenges: Star Wars (2019), Marvel (2020), Batman (2021), Wrasslin' (2022)

I think the most likely scenario, IF the current forecast holds, is to change the time of kickoff, possibly to Friday night. I just can't imagine unc being willing to give up a home game, especially when this game is suddenly pretty big.

"We were at the pinnacle, and we did it for years," Foster says. He pauses, nods, takes a deep breath. "And I did it with the best guy in the business."

I would think it is up the ACC office as 4 games are impacted. The ND-NCSU is the trickiest of the bunch and I could see NCSU refusing to move the game since they do not play ND at home again until 2023. They do play @ND next year which they may be able to switch but ND may have some issues with that as well. Maybe the best bet for that particular game is to play it Thursday night.

Just to consider what options there are...even though I know that some are a little out there.

NC State/Notre Dame could be flipped to South Bend, and then they will just adjust by flipping next year's game to NC State.

Plus, that game, and the Duke/Army game could be flat out cancelled. They're not conference games, and none of the teams involved are having good enough seasons where an extra non-conference game could boost them up. Well, except that they might need that last game to get bowl eligible. They could also move those games to December 3 if it's determined that those teams won't be playing in Orlando (although NC State is technically still in control of their destiny in the Atlantic).

All that being said, moving games would mean that the weather conditions are so bad that public safety is at risk, and moving people to and from the stadiums would be hazardous.

Army football is 3-1 so far and need every shot at a win they can get since they are an independent that relies solely on a handful of bowls contingency factors to get into one so I cant see them wanting a cancellation.

From my Pack Backer sources they are strongly considering moving the game to Friday. I live in Chapel Hill. Hopefully people are considering the same for our game.

Ok so it appears that it's going to rain, and rain a lot. How do we feel about a game that revolves around running the rock? UNC has a couple of experienced, talented RB's. VT essentially has four solid options for who they will be handing the ball off to. How does this game play out if there is going to torrential rain and the passing game gets all but eliminated?

I'd have to think that the way our offense likes to get defenders out of position, a sloppy field would make it even harder for them to recover. Advantage Hokies.

Yea but that 2nd back they had Saturday against FSU was FAST and powerful. He appeared more dangerous than Hood.

We've been playing against that other guy even longer than Hood. Logan is a known weapon.

Logan is pretty good and a strong runner. At the same time though, I don't see them getting as many yards on the ground, unless it's rainy and turns into a ground game with little to no passing. FSU's D is no bueno compared to Tech. UNC's looks even more miserable.

According to Football Outsiders:

TEAM / TOTAL S&P and RANK / RUSH S&P and RANK

VT / 14.6 - 7 / 116.3 - 27

FSU / 31.7 - 79 / 101.2 - 65

UNC / 34.6 - 101 / 91.1 - 100

(sorry, I have no idea how to make a fancy table.)

Game will either be moved to Friday night at UNC or Saturday in Blacksburg..

the idea to move it to Sunday is a 1/2 ass idea and you run the risk of moving it to have to cancel the whole thing. If you're going to do anything its going to happen before it comes (Friday) or move out of state (Blacksburg)

Moving it to Blacksburg wouldn't be that hard to do in terms of getting the teams ready and in town. Flights and Hotels would be needed and ESPN would have to re route the TV stuff to VA..

I would think playing on Friday night at UNC would make the most sense logistically...the only real downside is that the fans are put in a tough spot to get to the game on time. Given UNC's attendance vs Pitt I don't really see how a Friday night game would have significantly worse attendance though

Onward and upward

in times/hurricane issues like this attendance is the last thing they're going to worry about.

I wouldn't be shocked if something doesn't come out later around 3-4ish or early am tomorrow.

I also agree it will be either later today or tomorrow morning if they make changes . I think there will be changes I just don't know what they will be . My money is on a Friday game

I see a lot of people saying that moving it to Blacksburg would be a good idea but doesn't the path of the storm basically keep going north? if it hits chapel hill wouldn't it just keep on moving a few hours north and hit bburg a little later depending on the speed of the storm? im no meteorologist but just curious?

twitter @smithey_daniel

I'm not a meteorologist either, but from what I've read is that it will track along the coastline. There is a pressure system above the United States that pushes it back east once it starts turning inland.

no, it goes north east along the coast (most of the time). Only in rare instances do hurricanes veer west enough to really hit blacksburg whereas they expect the eye to roll right through the triangle. So it's the difference between the full brunt of a slow moving, rain dumping storm trudging through Chapel Hill and some peripheral rain (if any) sprinkling the burg.

Shifting to Blacksburg would also be easier to keep the same TV channel and time slot.

Are we sure they A) can read the advisories coming from NHC B) understand what a hurricane is C) some student advisor didn't write that statement for them?

I think they forgot about our game and think they are playing the Hurricanes and that they just adopted a new mascot named Matthew.

Hurricane Matthew will begin affecting Central NC as early as Friday morning

Emphasis is mine, but that makes it a lot harder to justify a Friday game. I've heard that the hurricane is speeding up as it makes its way north so...

Friday there will be rain from outer of stuff when they mean it will be affecting but there will be a big difference between a game on Friday and Saturday when you look at amount of rainfall and winds . That is of course with current projections

So new update from WRAL.... the eye of the storm is starting to look like its taking dead aim on the NC Triangle, and would potentially be on top of us right around kickoff for the game....

So.... not the best news

The line for this game has jumped from Heels -6.5 to Heels -2.5 today. Maybe Vegas knows that the game will be moved to Blacksburg, and is adjusting the home field advantage accordingly.

This doesn't look good from the perspective of playing on Friday night in CH.

So looks like Thursday is the best option for playing in NC. I imagine that we need to make a decision tonight if they were going to go that route.

Just curious...anyone think they would cancelled the game?

@AMB4VT

honestly, logistics-wise, that seems like the simplest option. Sure, it throws a wrench in things as far as records and whatnot are concerned, but the focus needs to be safety right now and if they keep putting off the decision to move the game to Blacksburg (please oh please oh please oh please), they'll reach a point where it's not really feasible to do that either.

Since it's a conference game, in division, between two teams perceived to have a real chance at winning the division, I think not. It will likely be moved up. Canceling and rescheduling would be really difficult, I would think.

"Exit light..."

Honestly... situations like this are why you should have 1 week delay between the end of the season and the Conference Title games. Best case, you allow both schools to go into the game fresh hopefully putting on a better show. Worst case, you get to use that week to make up games that were postponed from earlier in the year.

I have to wonder... if this game does get moved to Blacksburg, would the ACC compensate UNC by moving next year's game to Chapel Hill?

I really, really don't want to see this game moved to a half filled Lane with a neutered atmosphere where we're not allowed to have the festivities of being the home team if it means UNC gets 2 home games in a row over the next 2 years....

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

well if they can make the decision sooner rather than later, then maybe people will have time to make plans to attend. I hear a lot of folks from FL, SC, and NC are gonna be on the road this weekend anyway...

The case can also be made that moving the game to Blacksburg puts the logistical burden of hosting the game back on the Hokies, and a dicey situation like this may actually make playing at home a disadvantage.

'EVERYTHING'S ON THE TABLE' FOR HURRICANE MATTHEW AFFECTING NOTRE DAME-NC STATE KICKOFF

SOUTH BEND, Ind. β€” Hurricane Matthew could affect this weekend's Notre Dame-North Carolina State game, with Irish coach Brian Kelly saying Tuesday "everything's on the table" with regard to adjusting the kickoff time in Raleigh.

As of now, Notre Dame, North Carolina State and the ACC haven't moved the kickoff time from noon E.T. Saturday. But Kelly said Notre Dame has given North Carolina State and the ACC a 24-hour window for playing the game from noon E.T. Saturday through noon E.T. Sunday.

"We feel like anything after noon on Sunday starts to encroach on our ability to prepare for Stanford," Kelly said.

Kelly said playing the game Friday night has not been discussed, but he and Irish officials will have a conference call Tuesday afternoon to discuss further possibilities. If everything is on the table, as Kelly said, that could (but doesn't necessarily) mean moving the game from Raleigh as well.

Weather Underground's five-day forecast projects Hurricane Matthew to make landfall in southeastern North Carolina at 8 a.m. Saturday as a Category 1 storm with winds between 74 and 95 mph. Raleigh is about 200 miles from the Atlantic Ocean but still could be affected by the storm, with Weather Underground predicting 1.82 inches of rain with sustained winds of 20-30 mph.

Kind of funny that ND is the one wearing the pants in that conversation. I can see Swofford looking nervous with pen and pad handy to jot down demands. "Yes, sir, we can do that, sir. Thank you."

Just look at ND's schedule and the amount of actual away games that they play this season. It is a joke.

@ Texas - Game 1
@ NCSU - Game 6
@ USC - Game 12

They have 3-4 neutral site games to avoid actually playing in more than 3 opponent's stadiums.

..and yet they still will be battling for bowl eligibility.

Agreed! I'm just wondering: A 24 hour window or what?

Shep7777

Or we forfeit! We're 2-4 now, but we have extra time to get ready to lose to Stanford.

Insight from someone on the ground in Charleston

edit:
Also sounds like the next time the ACC is going to talk about this is Thursday?...That seems way too late

I'm gonna guess it'll be a Sunday kickoff. UNC won't want to move it and going earlier won't help anything. Just sucks because the NFL is on at the same time so nobody will be watching.

Rip his freaking head off!

Why have a game on Sunday when there could be massive power outages and emergency response crews will be needed elsewhere. It makes more sense to have the game earlier than later.

Yep... Sunday is probably completely out of the question if this gets moved. First responders will be mobilized elsewhere, and there won't be enough left to work our game, let alone the games at Duke and NCSU as well.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

So it's either Thursday (which is when the ACC is scheduled to talk about this again) or move it to Blacksburg. Right? That's the only two viable options I can imagine

I think so. Anything after Thursday would have to be played in Blacksburg, IMO.

Or, and I think someone mentioned it here, you postpone this game until early December and push conference championship game a week.

Yeah, I mean you're talking about 5 ACC schools that are going to be directly impacted by this. There has to be a way to just delay these games to the end of the season, and push the championship game out a week. This is actually easier to do with Orlando not having an NFL team than it would have been in Charlotte.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

You would need to get the NCAA and CFP to push back bowl selection and playoff selection a week as well, I doubt they will do that.

...That seems way too late

24 hours to plan for the biggest storm to threaten NC/VA in 5 yrs+ ???

#goacc

Games going to be in Blacksburg people!!!!! I don't see any other option, my guess is UNC and VT have been told. They're working on all the arrangements needed to make this happen and Thursday am it will be announced.

Trusting you because you have had inside info before.

That's actually backwards. They moved it to LSU last year. There's no way they cancel the game. I'd be willing to betake it's played in Blacksburg on Saturday at 330. So much so that I'm booking a hotel room. Will probably be the first & last time you can stay in Blacksburg for a conference game while booking the week of the game.

β€œThese people are losing their minds. This is beautiful.”

Thursday sounds way too late. If they were move it to Friday then you're leaving the teams to make last second changes which I'd think the coaches would hate or if you move to Blacksburg I'm sure NC wouldn't be happy

Well, over the course of the 2012, 2013 seasons, Duke had to play 2 away games at Lane, and the Hokies had to go to Miami twice in a row. This was done to accomodate Pittsburgh and Cuse coming aboard?

Leonard. Duh.

And didn't BC or someone have to play consecutive games in Blacksburg too?

I'm prepared either way.

Fire Whit.

I'm thinking we are going to get screwed on this deal. Guessing game will be cancelled and no make up. UNCheat gets out of losing to VT. They bet that they have a higher ranking at the end of the season and get to play Clemson for ACC champioship.

Shep7777

I just think there's too much money on this game to cancel it.

"Everything is either the best thing ever or the worst thing ever." - Fuente

Either way they are going to be losing money on ticket sales. I imagine UNC would refund their tickets and then VT would sell General Admission tickets. I doubt we would get more than 30k on short notice traveling during a storm.

There are 25K undergrads in Blacksburg that would love an excuse to tailgate and have an extra home game. Lots of Hokie fans in Blacksburg. Even more in the surrounding area. I bet we could get upwards of 50K if they announce it sooner rather than later.

And locals ;-)

They really don't want to move this game

We should have better understanding on what to expect tomorrow. I just feel like waiting until Thursday is not the best idea.

certainly doesn't sound like safety is their priority.

Sounds more like they're trying to soften the blow of losing a home game to their fanbase.

"I liked you guys a lot better when everybody told you you were terrible." -Justin Fuente

My hope is they've already made the call so at least the school's can get the ball rolling on logistics for playing in Blacksburg Saturday. If they're legitimately putting this off til the last minute then they are all idiots.

Warning: this post occasionally contains strong language (which may be unsuitable for children), unusual humor (which may be unsuitable for adults), and advanced mathematics (which may be unsuitable for liberal-arts majors)..

What fanbase? The basketball team isn't playing this week.

Can you blame them? We would lose our minds if we were in their situation and had to give up a home game when trying to compete for a division title, especially against a team that is in the top 25. They'll move the game if thats what it comes down to but they won't be happy about it and I certainly wouldn't be if I were them.

It is (was?) going to be a game where they were going to get great attendance, might be their premier recruiting weekend of the season, and again get home-field advantage. If the ACC is waiting till Thursday we clearly told them we could get it ready (no way it gets cancelled) in 2 days. So if I'm UNC I'd definitely wait until the forecast was a little more certain and I knew I was going to get crushed by the storm

Side note (might be influencing their opinion) that would be a hell of a three week stretch. On the road @#12 FSU @#25 VT @#10 Miami

A.) Our fanbase actually cares about football.
B.) Most of the attendance was due to our fanbase.

Am I the only one who had to look up who Bubba Cunningham was? I mean seriously, the most UNC thing ever, an Athletic Director named Bubba Cunningham, it just screams mismanagement.

So let's say they play this game during the hurricane. Does anyone have an idea of if UNC will offer refunds for tickets for those of us who don't think that it is a good idea to drive in a hurricane or am I going to be screwed out of that money?

Well depends. Did you buy the tickets through the UNC athletic department? If you did you might get face value. If not, fat chance. If you got them through StubHub or another reseller you're SOL if you didn't pay for their insurance on your ticket.

Better question, will Lane accept my tickets that bought for Chapel Hill should that occur and the game is played in Blacksburg.

I have experience as someone that lives on a barrier island. Sandy's eye officially touched down 5 blocks(the short side of the rectangle) from me. Also, I am a licensed pilot and spent multiple years in school studying weather as required.

http://images.intellicast.com/WxImages/CustomGraphic/HurTrack1.gif

The current probabilities show Chapel Hill at the far reaches of any wind at 40 mph (which is really not that bad), with the storm tracking further east. I suspect it will track further offshore and weaken immensely. Meaning the game should be played at the time and location scheduled.

Also, for everyone inclinded to do so, www.intellicast.com should be your only source of weather information. Their app for iphone/pad & andriod is called Storm.

From their latest update they have Matthew just off the coast of NC/SC at 8pm Saturday...
