Bud's Big Board

Anybody follow HokiesFB on Instagram? They posted a picture of Bud checking off all 8 of his key defensive objectives against UNC. As good as the defense has been, this is the first time this year we hit all of his objectives. Fascinating to see what he values in statistical objectives. Genius at work. Anything on this list surprise anyone?

[Mod edit: Added the big board for reference.]

When you hit all the goals on the big board.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

A new season...new hope

I follow the instagram...I think whoever is running it does a great job

The 8 objectives for the Tennessee loss looks bad but I came away feeling like the D didn't play that bad. Just needed to hold onto the ball and we win that game 9 out of 10 times.

Would absolutely love to play UT again. In the National Title game of course.

Tyrod did it Mikey, Tyrod did it!!

Can we get Bud a better board? Missing letters and numbers. Love this behind the scenes stuff.

I think "hold opponents to 1 points or less" isn't missing a thing.

That board is missing 3 games...

I hope I'm not the only one that scrolled up and examined the board before I got the message...

Yes...yes...Goals help you to win!!!! I recall a long article when they asked Bud what he would do as a Head Coach? Believe me, he would be successful, he is very detailed oriented and has a plan mapped out. Right now, everyone is going after the younger coaches. I believe Bud deserves to be a head coach before he retires from this thing. He is 57 years old, there aren't going to be too many more opportunities...I hope he gets a shot in the Power 5 as a Head coach.

This American Life did a great segment on this a long time ago.

Link for anyone who wants to listen.

The whole episode is about contests and such. The one about this guy is Act 4.

One of my favorites!

That was interesting, and a needed distraction.
Thanks for posting.

The gif is actually from the same show, if I recall. One of my favorite pop culture stories!

Ha, that's pretty neat.

Even not including a Win as a goal, I count 9 goals, not 8.

OP can't count! Have a leg!

Even with hitting all the objectives, VT would have lost 3:0 with Loeffler as OC.

And without Loeffler, the cupboard would have been pretty bare. Those 90+% of points scored by frosh just months removed from HS in 2014 are now being scored by grown men as juniors in 2016.

I can't really give Loeffler a ton of credit for recruiting most of those guys. He was not responsible for the vast majority of our 2014 and 2015 offensive recruits. Andrew Ford and Dwayne Lawson are gone, and Chris Durkin is now a TE. I will give him credit for Josh Jackson, though, who seems like he's going to be a very good QB. His scheme and concepts were far more advanced than Stinespring, but the scheme wasn't very effective most of the time.

The point is that these 3rd year starters neither learned nothing under Loeffler nor unlearned everything they were taught under Loeffler. There are certainly criticisms to be made of Loeffler, but he left the VT offensive cupboard much better off than when he got it.

Good recruiter, terrible OC. Probably just a terrible play caller, he had all the right plays just didn't understand game planning and sequencing.

I think he should have a space for destroy their very soul
