Is Credit Due (for Virginia Tech)?
In the linked Podcast, she was asked to discuss our big win over UNC last week, and, as you may expect, proceeds to crap all over our season and the Coastal Division in general, essentially calling us a paper tiger in an irrelevant division in a bad conference. She won't know more about us until we play Miami and Pitt, two games she expects us to lose, and should we beat Miami next week, that is to be held against us, because that would "be another ding on Miami's record" and would prove Miami is a bad team this year.
I won't go into too many words about my personal opinion on the subject, but its worth remembering this woman used to be the beat writer for the ACC and the one person who was supposed to be representing our conference to the nation on ESPN while we were a good program, and this is the attitude and viewpoint we routinely got. Perception matters, and her perception was that of resentment she even had to cover us. I truly do think its fortunate she's no longer representing us to the masses anymore, because she would have found a way to still claim the ACC was terrible even through these last few years.

Oh this is what I expected. But it just reiterates how truly awful she was to the ACC while she was tasked with covering us. She reeks of openly resenting the fact she had to cover our conference, and VT in particular, because she somehow feels we held her career back. Its shitblogging like this that made me stop reading ESPN in general a while ago.
Oh I agree, it's completely outrageous that she got to move up to cover the CFP after taking a gigantic dump on the very teams she was supposed to be covering. I get it, beat writers don't have to be huge fans of the teams they cover and aren't there to blow sunshine and rainbows up fans' asses (see: Bitter, Andy) but they shouldn't try and find every possible way of belittling them either.
Surprisingly, Bitter has changed his tune this year. And to be fair he was experiencing the same roller coaster we were the past few years. Hearing his last few podcasts I think he's actually a fan of VT.
Heather on the other hand. Aside from her attitude towards VT and ACC, she's just bad at reporting. How did she get that job?
Oh, really? Tbh I haven't read any of Andy's stuff since he stopped cross-posting it here. That's not a knock on him or anything personal, I just never think to look for his stuff. That's cool to hear.
If you use twitter, you really should give him a follow. He really writes some quality content and it's a good supplement to TKP as well.
I like reading and tweeting with Bitter. The issues here were kind of awkward, but it is what it is. Good info and Sunday reading for Hokies.
Andy really does write great stuff. As a beat writer he's not supposed to wear O&M glasses and being from Wisconsin (I believe) he has no affiliation with VT. Writes really good stuff and does a great job of keeping things in perspective. Believe he notes in his mailbag this week that it's certainly more fun to write about the What if's of Playoff contention and such than whether or not we'll get 6 wins to keep the bowl streak alive.
Andy does a good job- pretty straight down the middle. His podcasts with McFarling are entertaining as well- highly recommended as good commute busters.
She was poison to her readers (the ACCylum), and she was moved when ESPN closed up shop on their Big East blog. They moved Andrea Adelson, the former BE blogger, to the ACC job, and everyone won.
I wouldn't describe Bitter as "changing his tune". I think it's more like you said where this is just the first time in a long time in which he finally gets to report on a winning VT team. Bitter is a realist and he's not a VT homer (Auburn grad), and he's pretty upfront about where his heart lies. I respect him for that.
The only thing I don't like about his reporting style is that he doesn't like to speculate, and mostly just seems to state the obvious. His analysis is a tier above what Dinich does though for sure.
Agreed he's pretty pragmatic. But he's picking VT to cover spread and has score for game at 52-17 or something. Not a typical Bitter VT prediction.
I'm all aboard the hype train, but even I'm skeptical of covering 20pts in an trap game at the dome.
Interesting. I haven't read much of his stuff recently, but to my memory his score predictions were always relatively aligned with whatever the national consensus was.
That said, is a 35 point spread really that bold of a prediction? It's pretty in line with what we did to similarly talented BC and ECU. It's a little bold, but not out of reason for a neutral observer.
I agree, it does seem like Bitter is much more of a "fan" from listening to his podcast (which i enjoy). However, I will never forget Bitter putting himself and his stories above VT sports, specifically referring to the basketball incident last year. It was almost as if he thought that his stories meant more to fans than the actual success of the team.
It definitely wasn't his greatest moment, but considering the body of work the man has put out, I don't think that night is representative of AB or his attitude towards VT sports.

Andy is a journalist first, whatever else he might be, and when the prevailing sentiment in the press conference room is that the coach is disrespecting the media, Andy's going to side with the media, every time.
In retrospect, we know that was mostly just Berman getting his fellow reporters riled up, but I also don't mind the honest criticism that Buzx should have let the media know it would be a late start to the press conference. The truth on that whole deal lies somewhere in the middle.
I hated 1st take and all the changes they made to sports center and having topics on the side and bottom of the screen and in the middle, but she is the number one reason that the only reason I have used that site in 3+ years is for streaming games.

Same here. I was in the dorms in 2007-2008. This has stuck with me. I wouldn't really say she's dumb per se, but her infuriating reporting was often undeserved of the ACC and unfair. I guess that in itself is dumb so it's close enough.

"Mama Giraffe," like the accounts of opposing coaches, is a parody account run by an established TKPer, that engages in satirical dialogue with members of the community. It is not to be taken seriously. That is not to say that posts from these accounts are not subject to normal community moderation, but off-the-wall stuff coming from them is generally understood to be simple nonsense for comedic effect.
Humanity and communication are not this simple. The oversimplification of things to good and evil should be saved for children's stories.

Until this year, Mark Dantonio has played this out to perfection. Further, I actually thing some of the reason they are under performing was because of more lofty expectations after a playoff appearance.

Listened to this yesterday and meant to post about it. Like you the "Beating Miami" comment blew my mind. She somehow managed to try to make that argument that beating a team, is actually a bad thing because that gives that team a loss. This has to be the worst logic I've ever heard and I couldn't believe it when I heard it. Even the other two on the podcast seemed to tease her and realize that she is actually crazy.
As for ESPN, it's sad that they employ such people as herself because it can be a negative to some of their colleagues who actually do a great job. One that stands out to me is David Hale. I think his work is tremendous covering the ACC, most likely because he's realistic and watching him banter with the uneducated members of all fanbases is incredibly entertaining to me, as it probably is to himself.
Andrea Adelson was not bad at all either on the ACC Blog.
Yeah, AA and DH are doing a good job on covering the conference lately. They take the time to research their stuff and are actually putting out articles pointing out that the ACC is actually a conference that's playing better than its reputation.
Yeah I like them both. They have been really fair in their assessments of the conference.
Also, ranking UVA last all the time helps.
I posted this on TSL when somebody linked it, but it's applicable here too.
Heather was assigned the ACC when ESPN started their conference blogs. She had no ACC ties at all, and seemed to be hoping the new assignment would be a springboard to bigger and better things. But that was the nadir of the ACC's national perception, which corresponded with VT winning ACC championships. That meant fewer page views for her blog than others, which held back her career a bit. She seemed to hold it against ACC schools in general, and VT in particular; she was known to actively troll VT fans at the time.
The best example was when one of the licensing companies listed their 50 top-selling schools (I believe Texas, UNC, and Ohio State were on top). She made a pretty snide comment to the effect of "Where's VT, Hokies?" Turns out a 10-second Google search would have revealed VT used a different licensing company than that one. She gave a half-hearted apology later.
Either way, she has another role she clearly likes better, but it's also obvious she still has some resentment.
Is she a poll voter? Makes me wonder if she'd take it far enough to keep us out of the playoff in the future, not necessarily this season, out of spite. Say it was a 1-loss VT team that won the ACC and a 1-loss Big XII team.

Heather Dinich is part of the reason that ESPN has overlooked and denigrated the ACC over the years. If their supposed expert on the conference thinks we are bad, we must be.
I think most of the polls have the ACC as the second best conference after the SEC (and is the SEC actually better outside of Alabama?).

she's a pretty awful analyst though, basing all bias off one game which was a fluke. UNC is a pretty solid program and she just brushes them off to the side. We put up crazy points and allow the exact opposite...a blind giraffe could even tell we're solid.

I have to say, I'm just really disappointed in the insulting comments in the thread, profanity and personal insults, which popped up within minutes of the post being created. I expect better from TKP. Occasionally poking fun is one thing, the stuff I'm reading here is another. As much as you may have expected/wanted/tried to make the discussion go another route, as soon as I saw the title, I knew what the comments were going to be. And it's really easily avoidable.
Agree with that. You can take issue with what a person says without going after the person him/herself. The only thing I will say is that the giraffe joke when it comes to Heather, I have taken part in myself, if only because I know through experience its a joke that transcends across the ACC online forums and is essentially ACC internet canon by now.
Disappointed as well. My issue with Heather isn't that she's anti VT/ACC. I personally don't care.
My issue is when people say stupid things (See comment above about how she turned VT winning against Miami a bad thing). Absolutely no reason to attack her personally. Makes our fanbase look bad and I'm not a fan of that.

Is Heather a good Journalist? In my opinion no. Was VT football good after the year 2011? Until this year overall no we weren't. Until we have 10 straight undefeated seasons people have a right to say negative things about our program. Some people here need to get over themselves, hell we don't real have to deal with Heather any more unless we want to. Furthermore, we haven't won against a team that's currently in the top 25 nor are we the only team that controls their own destiny in the coastal. It's fun to talk about how good we are in the bubble that is Hokie Nation, but we have a lot of work to do to earn the respect of other fans.

Wow that comment wasn't just mean to VT, she just dissed the entire ACC with that one. I wonder if she's aware that the ACC is a much better conference than back when she was reporting on it? In the "inferior" coastal division UNC and Miami actually look good this year, and Pitt might not be top 25 good but they're competitive. The ACC coastal may not be the SEC West but jeez there are certainly weaker divisions in the P5 out there.

I know some of you forget but Andrea Adelson before she became an ACC writer used to tear into VT like she got a bonus for how bad she could make us look.
I think HD may have started to learn about college football, while the term "chokies" took root. She missed the early 2000s and watched Matt Ryan on one bad Thursday night. Since, her neck is already out there, she couldn't take a risk on VT. Although, I'm pretty sure she picked us to beat Ohio St in one of the games, I think the second game.
In reality, she is only concerned in career advancement and she did get promoted. VT is not the sexy pick. Her own networks recruiting service says Miami & FSU are always top ten and VT is lucky to make the top 25. I don't blame her on recent history and maybe she was advised to take an adversarial role to increase hits?
IMO, I think sticking your neck out like she does is not worth it unless you put the rings around your neck like they do in Africa

Heather doesn't like us and that's fine. There's a lot of people who aren't fans of our football team that I respect. It doesn't automatically make someone Hitler when they don't bleed O&M.
To be fair to her, she watched us lay eggs in big games against the likes of Kansas, Georgia, and Stanford when we were the cream of the crop of the ACC.
Do I enjoy her bashing us? No, of course not. Is she entitled to that opinion? Absolutely. Do I have the option of not tuning in? Yep.

Yeah, I'd say the big highlight was the ban hammer. It's used so little around here it's sort of interesting to see what it takes for it happen. Hopefully it won't be needed again for a while though.

She is objectively the worst reporter in all of football. If you ever read her articles written while she was still covering the ACC, it was obvious that she didn't even watch the games. It wouldn't surprise me in the least if I found out that she isn't a fan of college football or football in general. The Hokies have been mediocre to bad for the last 3 years in a row.

So far they've beaten the worst team in the ACC, a down ECU, Liberty, and UNC in a hurricane.
What's the problem with her assessment? Really? She's just saying that they've got to show her more. I essentially feel the same way.
What's wrong with her assessment is that she said she'll know more about us after our game with Miami....but if we beat Miami, it's because they're bad, not because we're good. It's like dismissing Bama by saying we won't know anything about them till the CFP, but if they win the CFP, it's only because they're better than everyone else this year.
My main point being, it sounds like she's going to hold off on giving us any credit for as long as possible, for some unknown, possibly personal reason. But that's all I'm going to rag on ol' HD for today.
Exactly... I took major issue with that reasoning. She won't know how good we are until we play Miami, but if we beat Miami, that's another ding on Miami's record so they can't be good. The mental gymnastics to come up with reasoning like that boggle the mind, and she was tasked with writing about and speaking for us when we were at our most recent peak. As I said, I'm thankful she's moved on.

She went a little overboard, but not outside of the realm of logic. I'd call it playing the role of devil's advocate.

Not necessarily so much this in her case, but we burned a lot of reporters from 2012-2015. I'm pretty certain we were picked to at least win the coastal in 2012, that made some people look at least a little stupid. At least one reporter called us a dark horse playoff contender after beating anOSU in 2014, we lost to ECU right after that. Someone else voted Motley preseason ACC player of the year while he was still under Lefty... wait no nevermind, that one was really dumb.
3 wins in a row doesn't make use consistently good team. Having a 10 or 11 win regular season probably does though.
