The last few weeks of Virginia Tech football have had a decidedly "Big East" feel to them - beating up on Boston College, playing in the cursed Carrier Dome against Syracuse, and now Miami and Pitt loom on the schedule. On Thursday night, the Canes and Hokies will face off as two wounded teams, both flying high before crashing back down to Earth and out of the polls. One can reasonably expect and old-fashioned grudge match between these two rivals.
We, the Hokie faithful, stand now in a position that is all too familiar for all sports fans. We're asking, "What just happened?" Could we have won? Should we?" Answers are never easy. But this is what it means to love a team. Every time they take the field, we, as fans, risk our own happiness at the outcome - elation in victory, despair in defeat. This is something that binds us together, a feeling that courses through the crowd in Lane Stadium, a common desire and hope for victory. It is the energy that brings you to your feet, your voice straining as your throat is raw from raining down hell on defensive series, stomping your feet and ringing your keys.
It is who we are as Hokie Nation.
There is a common purpose that unites everyone at Virginia Tech. It is a feeling that few outside of our community can understand. We have grown from a little-known school in a remote part of Virginia to a leading innovator across disciplines, transcending our traditional strengths in engineering and agriculture to become world leaders in the life sciences, medicine, and the arts. We invent the future. Our influence is worldwide. We pull ourselves up by our bootstraps in our blue-collar tradition, where respect is earned, not given. We bring our lunch pails and we go to work. This is an attitude that courses through our classrooms and our athletic fields, it unites us in one purpose to say to the world that at Virginia Tech, your success hard won and there is no obstacle too large. Not hardship, not tragedy, nothing.
As Chicago Maroon and Burnt Orange course through our veins, so too do the varied hues of Hokie Stone wind their way through the blocks that serve as the foundation of our campus buildings. Their natural beauty is the envy of many college campuses. Mined from our own quarry in Southwest Virginia, even our architecture is unique. And as the shades of limestone flow through our buildings, so too does pride flow through our hearts as we recognize the achievements of our school, and our teams. As stone forms the foundation of our campus, so too does a hardened sense of purpose form the foundation of our future. When this foundation is shaken, it never collapses.
Because now, we are reminded, as a bitter rival comes to town, that it is time again to go to work. Dwell not on Saturday's loss. No, look instead to the young leaders who will take the football field wearing our colors, seeking to do us proud, and to fight for their school and for their brothers. The young men in whom we place our hopes and the pride of our beloved Virginia Tech. From the stands, hail our Hokies and cheer them to fight on. For in times of great hardship, leaders emerge.
Cheer on Jerod Evans as he leads the offense down the field, yell encouragement to Sam Rogers, the living embodiment of this team's never-say-die attitude. Place faith in Isaiah Ford and Bucky Hodges as they stretch the field, set records, and exemplify the hard work necessary to achieve one's goals.
Strike fear into the Hurricane hearts with our mighty defense, and look to Ken Ekanem to anchor our ferocious defensive line, and Chuck Clark as he commands the secondary. Let the crowd echo a mighty "MOOOOOOOOOOOK" as Mr. Reynolds continues the tradition of versatile and relentless defensive play. Marvel at Brandon Facyson performing defensive surgery on opposing receivers.
Look to these young men, our representatives, and the leaders of this team. Look to see how they respond to adversity. Look at how they have dealt with the barbs thrown at them from those that purport to support them. Remember that you are on their side and that nothing will change that. They strive for degrees from the same University as yours. They sit next to you in class. They need you now, more than ever. Defend and support them, as they defend our beloved Lane Stadium.
Look to these on-field leaders, and as fans, help them re-establish the Terror Dome. Because, as in everything we do at Virginia Tech, we are in this together.
Be loud. Be Hokie proud. Miami is in town.
Let's go.

Cuck the Fanes!
Muck Fiami!
Let's go.
HOKIES!
Nothing beats "Enter Sandman" for a night game.
GET HYPE!!!
Pretty sure someone was cutting onions around me watching this game live in Biloxi, MS. It was hard not being there for that game! I hope we bring the terror dome back to Blacksburg!
I will never forget this game as long as I live. I've never heard Lane louder in my life. And I've seen almost all of the big-name games since 02.
Louder than the 03 Miami game? That was the loudest I've ever been at. Of course it ended up being a blowout so that took a bit out of it but we still railroaded the #2 team in the country that night.
That 2011 game was one of the earthquake games.
I don't know if they had equipment measuring in 2003 or not, but I do know that 1) it was the loudest I've ever heard Lane, 2) I had a buddy that missed the game and was sitting in his room in Foxridge and could hear everything, and 3) it was awesome to be there.
There was a thread a while back about night games in Lane, it's a nice stroll down memory lane: http://www.thekeyplay.com/content/2014/february/18/night-games-lane
I was at both games and there was a different energy in the air for the 2003 game. Walking towards the stadium you felt the electricity and intensity from the fans. The stadium was almost always loud until it became a blowout. 2011 had its moments, but it wasn't really crazy loud until the last few minutes in the game.
I remember being inside Lane for that game it was great. Even if I had a Physics make-up lab at 8:00 in the morning the next day.
"Now Miami wants to talk about it"
Really want this win. Last time we got Miami at home on a Thursday night, it was not pretty. Revenge tour continues...
So far we've played excellent at home, which is a refreshing trend, to say the least. Go Hokies!
Still undefeated in outdoor football stadiums! Can never remind us of that enough.
Also, when scoring more points than opponents.
Yes, I'm sure of it.

Aww man, are we playing in my yard?
Undefeated at home would be a nice refresher. Go for the small things first then shoot higher. I like it
This is exactly what I needed to read from this site...yesterday was disheartening for sure, but there's still half a season left to play. We are in control of our destiny for the Coastal and can still have a 10 win season, let's do this.
Additionally, it's posts like this that will keep me around TKP...as I think posts like this represent the majority of what Hokie Nation should be. The loss coupled with the twitter battle that ensued between TKP and Darius Redman and Luther Maddy and subsequent tweets by players like Mook, Stroman, and Trevon Hill saying that fans were being fickle made it a black day for everyone. I stopped following Gobbler Country because it got too negative in nature, and the Key Play was a refreshing alternative...let's keep it that way and let's kick ass on Thursday LET'S GOOOOOO....
Who wants to have halftime fireball shots with me in the east concourse on Thursday? I'm providing.
I'm really trying not to judge you right now
Haha judge all you want. It's tradition. I'm immune to that stuff now anyway after working at Hokie House. It might as well come out of the sink, there.
Oh dear god I can only imagine. While my main objections is "It's whiskey, it doesn't need flavoring" a secondary complaint is that there are better cinnamon whiskeys on the market....like....why does Fireball have to be the popular one? STOP KILLING YOUR TASTE BUDS, COLLEGE STUDENTS!
The popular one will eventually suck no matter what it is, so best to just let Fireball take that hit.
It's cheap
Glad this is the first thing I have read since yesterday's game. There is no time to look back, because this is the one Thursday night this year that Lane Stadium will be alive in full force.
Well... yes. That makes sense.
This reminds me of the Call to Arms that was posted in 2005, which I still think we owe a payback to the U for...
We stand the entire game, scream our lungs out, and never allow Mark Richt the ability to hear his own thoughts.
GOBBLE GOBBLE, BITCHES!! LET'S GO!!!
I thought that was 03. After we lost to wvu and had two weeks to stew on it, thanks to a bye week, before dismantling Miami.
2003 was weird because we played WVU on a Wednesday night (10/22) before the Miami game on Saturday 11/1.
I'll be there. Let's party.
So I was feeling a bit apathetic this morning about the Hokies.
Holy balls this video is the definition of hype. I hope the team watches this to help clear away any lingering thoughts of this past weekend. 0-0. Game week.
LETS GO!!!!
...and now I have two holes cut in the chest of my shirt. This is going to make for an embarrassing rest of the work day. Thanks a lot 7LoP.
Hot damn. Between OPs manifesto and this video I'm all kinds of hype. Bring on the Canes.
I'm the guy in the orange shirt on the field.
aww, look how cute the west stands looked before the renovation.
I hate Miami. I hate Miami. I hate Miami. I hate Miami.
Truly.
This game is the finale for "Hate Week x3" for my wife and I. My high school team beat hers 44-0 on Saturday, and her pro team beat mine 30-15 yesterday. Can't afford a losing record this year, so I'll be there screaming my head off for 4 quarters, 10-hour drive be damned. LET'S GO!
you married a cane? were you drunk, you know, for the whole dating/engagement/wedding?
Better than marrying a Hoo.
Sarcasm aside, she wasn't a Cane when we met in high school. And she went there because their atmospheric science school is top notch, and is what she's wanted to do pretty much her whole life.
Whoa now, there are other options, this isn't a presidential election you know...

I kid I kid.
Pumped! See y'all there!
Nic Acree FTW.
Good grief, you're right. The game locations also line up perfectly with how it did in 2003, our last year in the conference. Miami and Boston College at home, Pitt and Syracuse on the road.
EDIT: Syracuse was at home in 2003. Oh well, I was close.
This. Eyes forward to Thursday night football in Lane!
We lost a game that doesn't really matter.....as long as we don't play that poorly anymore (which I don't think we will)
Where's everyone tailgating? I'm taking a half day, have Friday off and driving up from Roanoke.
Son of a bitch, the timehop app has reminded me that a year ago today we lost Miami and that was the game where I finally snapped. The five years of mediocrity were unleashed verbally after the second, horrendous interception of the day.
I don't feel like trying to embed all these tweets through my phone from timehop so here they go.
4:14 pm
WE ARE OFFENSING! @thekeyplay
5:01 pm
Why?
5:02 pm
We are so stupid
5:05 pm
That was the worst I've ever seen a team handle the end of a half ever
6:04 pm
@mybritishfriend I was yelling after the second interception
6:12 pm
I. HATE. MIAMI.
6:30 pm
RT @thekeyplay: I LOVE THIS TEAM SO MUCH. I LOVE MY SCHOOL MORE THAN ANYTHING. BUT THIS IS WORSE THAN SMOKING A CARTON OF REDS A DAY.
:(
Timehop is so interesting this time of year. My tweets about VT football the past few years have been very generic and evergreen and you can never really tell who the opponent is.
Good god I love the people of Blacksburg.
Shoog, is that you making a meme appearance?
FYI, not sure if this has been posted yet but ESPN has the kickoff at 7pm rather than 8pm. Gotta get in early.
I thought it was always 7pm or am I crazy?
Thought their Thursday night games were usually 8pm to get in the West Coast audience too. Andy Bitter's latest article mentions the kickoff as if it's normally 8.
I wish it was 8pm, Hokie Sports has had it listed as 7pm for awhile I believe. I could have used that extra hour though.
the "usual" kickoff time for Thursday night games is 8pm This week they are showing a a west-coast game after ours so kickoff is moved up a bit
I think they've been moved up in general. The Pitt game kicks off at 7 as well.
ESPN's doing the same thing for the Pitt game next week.
Leonard = DRINK.
I had to take the afternoon off just to make sure I don't miss Sandman, which means I get to tailgate, but still...
#ThanksMiami
I need 81 to be at its best behavior on Thursday afternoon.
Anyone from the regular tailgate going to be there earlier?
I'm not from the "regular" tailgate, but I'll be heading to Sharkey's early in the day. Looks like my friends who have tailgate spots can't set up shop until 5 when the lots open.
Yet another reason lot 18 is so special. Nobody really cares because its too far away from anything and a grass lot.
Sounds like I need to experience the magic of Lot 18!
That you do. They colony always needs more citizens!
Frank is in it for the long haul. He should be there around 10 he is thinking. By himself most of the day otherwise. Everyone else is either abroad this week or on the West Coast. I am sure he would love the company. He is supposed to be removing the guardrail so I don't have to waste those precious seconds driving around it.
Pretty sure I'll be there around 10 or so too. The last time I talked to Hokienginerd, he is shooting for around that time as well. There was talk of getting in a pre-noon Rail but I want to remember this game and not wake up 3 days later in Radford with no pants on.
Good. When I make my dramatic entrance some time after 5 I will need someone to fill the funnel.
Oh yeah. And Fireman is making his triumphant return!
Maybe the last time until the LOLUVA game. Have to see how baby and Mrs. Fireman are doing. This game is costing me some points.
Friday morning, go down South Main St. to Our Daily Bread Bakery. Pick up a variety of cookies and pastries for the Mrs. and the little ones. This is the cost of my visits to Blacksburg when my wife has to stay home. Works every time.
What time do they open and how far is that from Dublin (where my hotel is), I have to be back in SC no later than 1245 for a VERY important doctors appointment.
They open at 7:00 every weekday. Or just stop in on your way into town and get stuff before the game. A bit of a hike to get back up to Blacksburg from Dublin.

Just remember, vasectomies are not sufficient birth control until about 4 months after the surgery. Let's keep the oops count at 4, shall we?
Umm ok, not what this is for but thanks, also none of the kids were oops, all planned.
This is where me and my wife go before every game. She loves it there, and it is growing on me now.
I am going to highly regret not just taking the whole day off. Gonna plow into that lot like a monster truck.
Nope, I'll be parked over in Lot 8. Until about 2:00....for work.....
I, for one, like Miami. We've been playing them forever and outside of FSU we've given them better games in their bak years than most others.
I consider Miami and VT rivals of highest order with a memorable history between them for the last 24 (consecutive) years of Hokie fans.
Back when we were in the Big East and people complained that we weren't any good and we didn't play anyone, we could always come back with, "Well, there's Miami". They legitimized our victories by being our basis for comparison.
Logan's Run is definitely the peak ultimate victory for me against them, and I'm sure they really enjoy their favorite victory as well. This is what rivalries are, a long history with close games against familiar competition.
I like Miami. If we're not going to win the Coastal, I generally hope it's them.
Might be a deal with the devil. I'm content with it.
Oh man, Logan's Run is one of my favorite moments ever. We were so anxious at that moment. All I remember is watching the play develop, and screaming "LOGAN'S GOT THE BALL!" but I think I got drowned out by the loudest roar I've ever heard in Lane by the time I was saying "got."
I remember standing and just yelling "OOOOHHHHHH!!!" as the line burst open and holding my arms out like I was about to hug LT3 because he was running directly at my section in NEZ (I was about 3 rows behind the MVs). What a glorious end to that game.
I was working that day so I was listening on the Tuenin app. After the play, you couldn't hear what Roth was saying due to the crowd noise.
No better way to get back on track than to remain undefeated in Costal play! AP ranking is just a number and it'll come back when we deserve it. Time to get hype for Thursday Night football in Lane!
Jesse Palmer and Laura Rutledge will be in the house for us TV viewers.
I think we should get Joe Buck and Tim McCarver to do a game.
What I want to see...
Hokies win the coin toss and defer. At the half Miami is down by 20+, and Mark Richt calls for the on-sides kick on the 2nd half opening kickoff, a la 2006 Chicken Nugget Peach Bowl. Shegog (wearing #25), playing as one of the upmen snags the kick and takes it to the house.
ESPN then zooms in on Beamer in the box, and he's finger wagging, Mutombo style.
