I can honestly say the Boise loss in 2010 was the 2nd most crushing loss of my time as a Hokie (because fuck Matt Ryan), but it is seriously impressive that Boise has managed to be such a consistently good team, even after their 2-3 years of fame and a coaching change.
For perspective, I was 8 when we lost the NC.

Ok, since I'm just so tired of these stupid commercials, if you drop a bunch of cinder blocks into your truck bed; aluminum or steel construction, you deserve all the damage you cause. Also, this is why Rhino-liner is a thing

Pac12 after dark not disappointing. They might as well be playing a different game as the rest of the country because I truly don't know how they play this terrible on defense and teams can score this much in such short spans of time. Double OT right now after a blistering Oregon comeback.

This Cal-Oregon game inspired me to pull up the 2003 Cal-VT game on YouTube. Aaron Rodgers starting laughing at our defense so I turned it off. Final score was 52-49 of the 2003 game. Cal won tonight 52-49.

Wow the total was 90 not sure I've ever seen it that high before but sure enough they eclipsed it. What in the name of Tony Graziani has happened to Oregon?

Agreed completely but I was a fan of the concept. Can't change how much that stadium sucks, or how much the fan sucks....or how much the program sucks. Excluding Trey of course.

I'm torn on the UNC-UVA game today. Never sad to watch the Hoos lose (that even rhymes!), but the Heels have a pretty easy schedule to finish out the year.
Outside of the rivalry game with NC State, today might be the best shot for them to pick up a second ACC loss. Plus, it's a Coastal division game.
The Hoos still have Louisville, Miami and us on the schedule. At least two more losses there.
Obviously, if we win out, it doesn't matter, but another UNC loss gives a little margin for error.

Just the fact that they've been showing signs of life, and our games with them have been close the last few years, makes me want to see failure on their part. They aren't as good as teams we've already beaten, but anything can happen (Syracuse) and I need confirmation that they're bad.

Definitely a weak slate of games this week. Guess I'll just have to be productive today and win some points for not binge watching from noon to midnight.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
I'm watching that game, in hopes that Cuse dominates BC, meaning last week wasn't a complete fluke. So far Cuse's best offensive play is a hard count on the snap to get BC off sides.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
I find it funny they could lose to SMU and stay in top-25 at 5-2 with a decent and bad loss. We lose to Cuse and drop out. This is why preseason polls are BS (more because they in than us be in).
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
I've always thought of a "bad loss" as a loss to a team that has no business beating you. I wouldn't call UNC's loss to us bad, even though we beat them by 31. A blowout loss =/= a bad loss.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
To me there are 2 kinds of bad losses: 1) lose to a team that had no business beating you and 2) being blown out by a team that you should be able to compete with. In TT's frosh year, VT came on strong after being blown out by LSU. No way anyone was voting VT into the NCG, if we went undefeated the rest of the season (and we were close to doing so). Pundits basically said so, after LSU leaped over VT in the week 15 BCS rankings.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Well we both had two losses that was an obvious jump for them because head to head, but if we hadn't lost to BC (Fuck Matt Ryan) We definitely would have made it, we finished 3rd in BCS with two losses.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
You do realize the last few weeks of that season were complete and utter chaos, right? But there is just no way they would have justified two loss LSU over one loss VT. It's a stupid thing to argue about because it almost 10 years ago, but we were #1 in the computer component and we would have been the only 1 loss conference champion other than Ohio State, we would have gotten in.

Gotta hand it to WVU, their fans are psychotic but they know and care about football. If your team isn't playing, that's a good football environment for a game.
Umd, on the other hand, is a terrible environment. Always.

Our SOS will need it next year. We get Clemson in Lane, but other OOC is @ECU, ODU and Delaware. UNC, Miami and Pitt will be contenders, but don't carry much national weight. The rest of the games will be "I hope we don't screw up and lose to..." (if we are serious contenders for the ACC and hopeful shot at play off).
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
WVU still hasn't played a ranked team and that was the worst TCU team in years. Still not convinced they're the real deal but they're looking good. Would love a top 15 matchup to start the season next year.

I couldn't find anywhere else to put this, and I didn't want to start a new thread, so here it is:
McQueary wins $7.3 million in suit against Penn State
October 28, 2016 12:12 AM
BELLEFONTE, Pa. — A jury on Thursday ordered Pennsylvania State University to pay $7.3 million to Mike McQueary, who blamed school officials for destroying his life and coaching career after he emerged five years ago as the star witness against Jerry Sandusky and three administrators accused of covering up Sandusky's sex attacks on boys.
It took four hours for the Centre County panel to find that Penn State officials lied to Mr. McQueary when they promised in 2001 to tell police he had reported seeing Sandusky sexually assault a boy in a campus shower, then damaged his reputation when Sandusky was finally arrested a decade later.

Considered that earlier. Becomes way more likely now that OSU lost, assuming Michigan beats them too. Now we just need another aTm loss (they still play Ole Miss and LSU), some chaos in the Big XII (Baylor and WVU still play each other, and neither has played Texas or Oklahoma yet), and for Nebraska to lose to either OSU or Wisconsin in the next two weeks, and we'd be in the conversation.
Us winning our next 6 games is probably the most unlikely part of that scenario. Can't wait to see how this plays out.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
It's fun to play what ifs, and if team chaos let's it be so, that would be awesome, but I agree we just need to worry about winning the rest of our games

Unlikely Louisville is in now either. Houston having two losses really hurts. Their SOS rest of the way won't help them unless Clemson losses.
If Clemson doesn't lose, VT wins out and looks good doing it, then the committee would have to put their money where their mouth is about conference titles meaning something

After a boring day, three major developments last night:
1) PSU > OSU. PSU got their starting linebackers back from injury, which is a gigantic sign of relief for the whole program. Jason Cabinda and Brandon Bell (31 combined tackles including 2 sacks, 3 TFL, 2 passes defended) are helping PSU trend upward. Unfortunately, as PSU fans tend to do, they tarnished a joyous night by getting a little out of control downtown. Let there be no more question about Franklin's job security, even though everyone up here already knew his seat wasn't even warm this season.
2) LSU appears to have a functional offense now since Orgeron took over. Fournette finally had the kind of game we've been expecting of him. At one point last night he had 7 carries for 249 yards and 3 TDs. Orgeron should be the guy LSU hires after this season, but if I have learned anything about LSU's administration, they tend to overthink things.
3) Bye Houston! Their loss to Chad-Morris-led SMU wasn't a fluke, and now Houston will get a ranking based on performance instead of preseason expectations.

Wow. So last night, an unranked Penn State played number 2 Ohio State. Late in the fourth quarter PSU returned a blocked FG for a TD to remain the school that covered for a pedophile for decades with minimal ramifications.
College football sure is a wild ride!!!

So PSU is now 5-2 overall and 3-1 in-conference with games remaining against Purdue, Iowa, Indiana, Rutgers, and Michigan State. Don't look now, but if Penn State wins out against that collection of cream puffs, Ohio State wins out and Michigan wins except the loss to OSU, then Michigan, OSU, and PSU will be in a three-way tie for the division. Side note, Michigan State will not go bowling this year.
And for your viewing pleasure, Sad Ohio State Fan under Beaver Stadium, taken by a coworker

No, PSU should never be allowed to be relevant again. Every dollar that program makes should be funneled directly into victim programs and funds. They should be forced to play their games in empty stadiums.

Don't really see the benefit of punishing all the fans and players for the actions of two men. It was a terrible thing but to continue punishing them is overboard. I liken it to people wishing Vick was still in jail. He served his time, just like PSU has.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Lmao ok. So in 15 years when all this is decades old they still can't have success? Screw that attitude man they've served their time. It's so easy for us to sit back and wish this kinda thing on them but Joe Pa, though his actions were inexcusable, was their hero. I guarantee 100% you'd do everything they have if Frank Beamer was found guilty of a similar situation.
That shit was terrible but you gotta move on from it sometime and just let them play football.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
They can still play football just without rewarding their horrible fan base and administration. As for if Frank Beamer was accused of the same thing I would personally lead the mob that destroys everything with his name on it in Blacksburg.

Well your holier than thou attitude is not worth my time to argue with. I hope they win out this season. Especially after what the players and coaches have gone through, dealing with people like you who wish no success on them after not having anything to do with any of this. They're just playing football man.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
I don't have an issue with them winning I have an issue with them being considering a relevant or important program. As for Holier than thou anyone who doesn't condemn what that PSU coaching staff, Athletic dept and admin did, isn't human. They allowed the long term abuse of CHILDREN to take a back seat to winning football GAMES.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
You've got a good handle on this, Warthog. I was about to make a holier than thou comment a little earlier as well. Fireman's comments are big on judgement and small on perspective.
The reality is that the number of people who are 100% pro-Paterno up here is incredibly small and mostly consists of the elderly. Most of the current undergrad students weren't even on campus when this happened. They cheer for the students on the field, not the AD, president, former coach, or administration. And those students had nothing to do with any of the things that Fireman is criticizing.
As a community, PSU and State College has mostly moved on from the scandal. Virtually every day on the way to and from work, I hear radio commercials advertising free community events and training to protect children and to help people identify the warning signs that a child is being abused. I would go as far as to suggest that this community has probably done more than most to fight against child abuse since the revelations about the football program.
As you can tell from Fireman's comments, there is still a social price to be repaid, but the community is up to the task. No one is saying all is perfect, but they'll earn their forgiveness in time. It is still common to hear people criticize the school, and Penn State's name will be associated with that for a long time to come. But it's becoming increasingly rare to hear the level of vitriol that Fireman is spewing as time has gone by and the community has been correcting the sins of the past.
Let the students achieve their goals on and off the field, and as for the myopic view that the university will be forever deserving of the death penalty, give it a rest.

Thanks for the perspective from someone local to Penn State. Refreshing to hear such perspective given the way media portrays things and sensationalizes the vocal minority you speak of.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
And it'll happen again. You could have probably walked around the tailgates this weekend and seen more of them. You'll probably be able to see them next year. And the year after. So sharpen your pitchfork if you like. Just don't be so obtuse that you choose to believe that what you're seeing here represents support for child abuse.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Supporting the enablers of child abuse is supporting child abuse. You can't support a murderer and then claim you don't support the crimes he committed. PSU as a school and fan base still embraces and supports that former head coach. It won't be long before his statue his back and his name is placed on some athletic building.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Agreed. The crimes were so egregious, the cover ups so deep and the acceptance of the fanbase so swift that they are nowhere near finished with their penance in my book.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
I think everyone is in agreement that there is more penance to be paid, including myself, most of us, and much of the community up here. I just bristle a bit at the presumption that supporting a person means supporting every sin they ever committed.
Curious for a perspective, though: When will the penance be paid? I can totally buy that the majority still has a bad taste in their mouth about the scandal, but is there a point where enough is enough? Are there specific things that should be seen from the community that would assuage all the anguish?
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Didn't they have a Paterno Day this fall? I got no use for that bullshit. I'm in the construction business, which means 75% of the people I deal with are VT or psu alums. I don't know a single psu alum who doesn't have an effigy of paterno within arms reach at all time and is ready to prostheligize his virtues at any conversation lull.
I almost went to psu, that community is reminiscent of my home. But I have seen no proof that the vast majority of their fans aren't full on apologists who want everyone else to get over it.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
They did have a day to recognize the 50th anniversary of Paterno's first game coaching this fall, which was crass and they were roundly and deservedly lambasted for it.
I obviously cannot speak to the opinions of the people you run into, who sound awful, but in my experience I do see proof that the vast majority of their fans aren't full on apologists, and I see the work they're putting in to create a new culture for the program.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
That's great, I'm glad your community doesn't suck. It should start small and spread. A "reasonable PSU perspective" has not spread to my neck of the woods and it will probably take years before it does. I really am glad that a non-PSU guy living in State College sees the good in those people.
But to me, it's a program that allowed a sexual predator to destroy lives with their culture. That's a perception that's not going away anytime time soon.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
I agree with what you are saying, but the vast majority of his supporters will insist that he didn't know. I personally think that it's a moronic position to have.
Not that academic cheating and abusing children are morally equivalent, but the UNC cheating scandal is a perfect illustration of how people selectively believe facts/evidence: there are a huge number of UNC supporters who insist that the cheating was a general student population thing, since over 25% of the free grades were given to non-athletes. This in spite of the fact that you have better odds of winning the Powerball, in consecutive weeks, than you have of 75% of the free grades going to athletes and it was a random event.

So does this mean that if I support MV7 that I support dogfighting? Are you really putting up this straw man argument? Is being right about this really that important to you?
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Do you deny that MV7 abused dogs? Did you at the time want him to not receive any punishment for that crime? Did his abuse get covered up by VT or any employees?
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
No I don't deny MV7 abused, and executed, dogs, who lived inhumanely. I did want him to receive punishment for that crime, and I believe his incarceration and subsequent charity has atoned for his debt. What does VT have anything to do with this? This was MV7's crime and he's done his time.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
So unlike you and MV7 you don't deny he committed a crime, you don't celebrate him at dog shows and don't want monuments erected for him at the local dog park. PSU has done or is trying to do all those things with the former head coach.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
You do realize that PSU took the statue down, right?
You also realize that MV7 has Michael Vick Hallway on the second floor of Merryman, right? Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't he also have a retired jersey?
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Yes because his crimes had nothing to do with VT, that's why I used the dog park as a bad place to put a statue of him up. PSU was where the crimes and cover ups occurred. They took the statue down and there is already a large movement to put it back.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
After all, the fear of social repercussion was the motivation for Paterno and the Penn State administration to overlook a serious ongoing crime for over a decade.
As far as the current fan base, some of them would re-install Joe Paterno's statue. How long should Penn State's punishment have lasted? I don't know, but maybe longer than 5 years.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
They proved they were willing to pay a cost in dollars, as long as it didn't tarnish the football program for more than a handful of years, as that would have been punishing the fans and the current players.
It clearly wasn't significant enough if the program is back to the level of beating Ohio State in 4 years
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
I agree, they're not better. They beat Ohio State because they were good enough to have a close enough score at the end to beat them with a few breaks, and that does say something about their program.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
I'd agree. I think some good football players still want to go to PSU and still want to play football. Franklin is a good coach. The program overall is working its way back from deserved punishments. I don't see anything wrong with the players wanting to win, or with the fans for rooting for them.

It's more about shelf life for stigmas attached to schools. It's been 9.5 years since my senior year and April 16th and it's still a huge talking point, in person and by the media. It's been, what, four years since Sandusky's crap came out? And it seems like it's already taboo to bring it up.
So my question is why should it take Tech twice as long (and counting) to live down a single tragic event that was outside its control and yet Penn State has done its penance for actively covering for a monster's abuses over 15 years?
It's effed up and I have no sympathy for them. Hell, an older guy at church was wearing a PSU shirt and beaming about their win yesterday and I wanted to punch him in the face for it. I guess that makes me a holier than thou asshole.

Interesting perspective @hokie07ME. To this day, when people found out I was at VT in 2007, I always hear/get asked about the massacre. Sometimes people are very insensitive to the fact that I was there and don't want to talk much about it. Then I also have my friends who know that if that card comes out in "Cards Against Humanity", I'll be quite unhappy, so they throw it out upon getting it in the mail. At the same time, its not about shelf life. There will always be a morbid curiosity about people who are closely associated with a major historical event. Whether we like it or not, we are associated with it, and forever forced to deal the curiosities of other people.
I'm also blessed (cursed) with having a lot of friends who went to PSU (and graduated in '07 with all the love in the world for JoePa), and have to put up with their defense of JoePa and how they are the greatest school in the world. At the same time, my gf lives with a RECENT PSU grad, and her attitude is very different. She understands the positive impact that JoePa had on the students and PSU community, but really doesn't share the immovable love of him. She doesn't defend him. She personally wants to stop hearing about him, which I think is more representative of the current community (as HOAT has articulated earlier in the thread).

It certainly isn't taboo to bring up the scandal at this point, and when I see a joke about it, as tasteless as those jokes are, they're easy to ignore. Heck, isn't there a picture of the statue in the showers upthread? Easy to let those by. It's when people hammer on and on about it where it sticks in my craw a bit.
I have not conveyed to you or anyone else that anyone thinks the penance is done. I just don't see the need to pile on while I see them actively paying that penance, even if it will take more time.
As far as the old guy at church, are you sure he isn't allowed to be happy about a big win? Does he really deserve any vitriol?
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
the anger comes from the fact that they even still have a football program. By covering up for Sandusky, they maintained the image and success of football program at the expense of children. After all, it's only because of the image of the football program that Sandusky wasn't kicked to the curb as soon as anyone knew what was going on. After that first report that was buried, the responsibility for every subsequent assault lies squarely at the feet of the PSU football program. They let Sandusky run rampant for 15 years? Shut down the football program for that long.
Instead the NCAA levies some weak (I think) penalties regarding scholarships and post season participation and then cancels those after two years (thus the "penance is done" comment). Penn State fans should be ashamed that they got off so easy.
I know even relatively minor black marks on our past (MV7's dogfighting deal, Shai's legal issues, pick your Marcus fiasco) have made me a little ashamed to be associated with Tech football because I feel like we should be better than all that. Apparently, Penn State fans don't have that problem and can compartmentalize a lot more than I can.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
I see your point, but while you or me or anyone else might not like that the NCAA punishments were rescinded or that PSU still has a football program, both of those are due to the fact that the crimes that were committed weren't under the NCAA's purview. Hence the scholarship reductions, postseason bans, and free transfer waivers for currently players weren't a legal punishment per the NCAA bylaws.
I feel pretty disgusting typing that, but it's the truth. The NCAA doesn't have a precedent for this, and to be honest, I don't want the NCAA legislating these types of systemic problems, I would rather have the legal system sort it out.
The $60 million fine they paid was in limbo for a while because it was earmarked for some organization in Texas or something, while the state of PA (not PSU, they didn't challenge it) wanted to pay the fine to in-state charities, which they did.
While the sanctions were in effect, they certainly did damage the program, although I think a ton of people would have rather enjoyed seeing more damage done, and I don't think most people would have objected to an SMU-style penalty.
As far as the penance being done, I don't think that the penalties being rescinded made everyone feel like they were free from the problems, which is why I appreciate seeing so many people step up around here to make sure nothing like this happens again.

It was pretty loud. I got advanced notice of good plays by leaving my window cracked open and the TV turned down, it let me hear when cheers erupted from the stadium.

When does Houston finally drop out of the polls. Last 3 weeks they've lost to Navy, needed a scoop and score fumble with less than 1:30 left to beat Tulsa and lost to an SMU that likely won't be going bowling. I seriously doubt they drop out of the polls from being #11, but they don't deserve to be ranked.
If any other G5 team had a similar run, they wouldn't even be getting votes, let alone be in the polls.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
This is the question of the day. From looking at the goings on, we will likely be somewhere between 24 and 26, depending on if Houston drops behind us and if Penn State jumps ahead of us. I'm really expecting Houston to drop out, if only because of how dominant SMU was. Houston scored 16 points, 7 of which was from a TD off of a fumble at the SMU 10, and they also got a safety in garbage time when SMU snapped the ball through the endzone on a punt.

Psu got zero votes last week. That's a lot of teams to jump.
Looks like WSU and CU are primed to jump in with road victories, but VT is right there and everyone saw us play. I'm guessing we are 25th, maybe as high as 23rd. I could see:
23VT
24WSU
25Houston
Colorado won 10-5, even on the road that's not a sexy win.

Yeah, a W @Stanford isn't much to brag on this season. The trees are fortunate that they have Rice and 3 of the 4 weakest teams in the P12 on their remaining schedule or they wouldn't be going bowling.

As I see it, it does not really matter. If we get ranked and go 0-1 this week we drop out. If we keep winning we will get ranked and move up the charts.

It's always better to be ranked. You get coverage in all the picks articles all week. You can go up easier if ranked. As a Thursday night game, our score is scrolled all day Saturday if we are ranked. Being ranked is very important to coverage.
Yes, we need to win to keep it. But even one week of being ranked has value.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Agreed, but let the recent roller coaster stabilize before getting to hyped and get ranked. Was the Cuse game a sign that this team can't win on the road? I honestly don't know. Beating UNC at their place is an indicator that it's not, but that game will have an asterisk beside it, until our team proves that it wasn't just a matter of us handling bad weather better than UNC. Winning at Pitt would be a big step in the right direction, to disprove that notion. Until then we shouldn't be ranked.
Note that I started this sub-thread as a discussion on Houston's ranking. I, in no way, posed the q as a point of evidence that VT should be ranked.

In 2014, we jumped from #38 to #17 just by beating #9 OSU. Penn State just knocked off #2, and are now 5-2 (same as us), with losses to Michigan (better than Tennessee) and Pitt (better than Syracuse). Toppling the #2 team in the land is a pretty big deal.

I thought Boise wasn't allowed to wear blue at home.
Maybe since one team would have to wear blue they let home team choose first?
That's what I thought, but they have orange unis too. All blue is their default home apparently.
Applies to conference games, iirc.
That rule was instituted in 2011, but removed in 2013 to keep Boise St. in the MW.

Compulsory "get off my lawn!"
I don't know why this is a reply on my comment outside of divine intervention BECAUSE I THINK THE EXACT SAME THING WHEN I SEE THAT COMMERCIAL.
Who the hell is putting heavy payloads in a truck without a bed liner?
Damn it, you saw my drunk reply before my ninja edit.
Have a pancake, on me.
Ok, since I'm just so tired of these stupid commercials, if you drop a bunch of cinder blocks into your truck bed; aluminum or steel construction, you deserve all the damage you cause. Also, this is why Rhino-liner is a thing
In other game news, I'm still irked that NC State missed a chip shot field goal from the dead center of the field to beat Clemson at home last week.
My sister was ready to turn the entire special teams unit into soylent green after that.
guess I'll check out cal ore.
just watched Temple beat USF.
This head coach simply isn't recruiting well. When he had the old staff's players, they were able to do well. 4 years later it's not looking as good.
Five losses in a row for Oregon. Helfrich is done. They might not make a bowl this year after going to the championship game two years ago.
I was thinking that this Oregon team reminded me of our drop off in 2012, but they are probably worse than any of teams from 2012-2015.
Imagine what those years wouldve looked like if we didnt have Bud.
but they still beat UVa, too!
OT but concerns another school. Maryland is getting a new indoor facility and I can't lie it looks pretty nice! http://colefieldhouse.umd.edu/mobile/video.html
Meh, just trying to keep up.
Agreed completely but I was a fan of the concept. Can't change how much that stadium sucks, or how much the fan sucks....or how much the program sucks. Excluding Trey of course.
Which is a big step for Maryland.
They're a soulless program with a corporate sponsor, clown uniforms, and some good recruiters.
I'll never be a fan after they shamelessly switched conferences just for more cash.
Not to mention how many sports did they cut because they didn't have enough money?
Syracuse is a 4-point dog to BC? Guess Vegas chalked up last week's win as a fluke.
Well they're playing in Chestnut Hill so there's no 10 point swing to Syracuse to account for the Carrier Dome's black magic sorcery.
I feel ya but let NC State hand unc that loss. They are no slouch. Loluva hopefully loses every game from now till eternity.
Yeah. and then some.
OR
how about VT just win out? No problem. Fu** UVA...I can never root for them. Ever.
Just the fact that they've been showing signs of life, and our games with them have been close the last few years, makes me want to see failure on their part. They aren't as good as teams we've already beaten, but anything can happen (Syracuse) and I need confirmation that they're bad.
Dino Babers speech after they beat us was featured on Gameday. :(
yeah that hurt to watch :(
Saturdays are normally my free day, which I binge watch cfb...but I'm not really feeling anything today until tamu-bama.
I think I'm going to binge play destiny instead.
I'll be poking my head in from time to time to hear about which good games I'm missing out on
Definitely a weak slate of games this week. Guess I'll just have to be productive today and win some points for not binge watching from noon to midnight.
So... Most fans in the stadium: LOLUVA Spring Festival or Cuse at BC, today?
Why couldn't Dungey suck like this when VT played them?
He was 32-38 for 434 and 3 TDs today??
Anyone else see that pushing match between Cuse and BC? Pretty sure a Cuse sideline person shoved a BC player.
'a'? Dungey was close to an ejection.
No not a player, guy in rain suit and orange ball cap.
Misread that. Yeah, that happened.
I'm watching that game, in hopes that Cuse dominates BC, meaning last week wasn't a complete fluke. So far Cuse's best offensive play is a hard count on the snap to get BC off sides.
NC State getting housed might be 55-0 today
Only if Ville stops trying at halftime.
Which apparently they did stop playing to get that final score.
Did anybody else hear Louisville wearing out Metallica prior to kickoff?
Yep been doing it all season I've heard.
Was hoping for a good game with UL and NCSU. Can't believe that score.
Take a look at that win probability chart on ESPN. Flat line at 100% UL
Wisconsin QB Horniman = Andrew Ford
Speaking of Ford he is playing on SEC network right now. Umass vs SCjr.
Yep, he's 18-36, 2td, 2int and an 8 yd td run.
Just threw another TD. Just down 34-28 with 4:32 left.
Iowa going for two for the backdoor cover. It's Wisky -3.5, 17-12 with two point pending
Td overturned
Wisky escapes with their 3.5
I can't believe the 'Neers are ranked 12
they've been keeping their head down and winning.
I've been impressed by UCFs turnaround under Scott Frost
I think JUGS has really done great things down there also.
It'll take awhile but moving in the right direction. Love the effort and coaching staff that's for sure.
UVA got saved by the refs. Mizzell fumbled that ball.
Targeting is still inconsistency called. Close one called on review against A&M but Alabama got away with an obvious one in first quarter.
Just saw the highlight. Looked like targeting to me. But it's 'bama....
This LOLUVA-UNCheat game is the definition of an ugly football game.
Oops. LOL.
Glad I'm not the only one that witnessed that play in all of its loluva beauty.
TJ Logan got exactly one hand on him as he walked into the endzone.
UVA is getting dragged and I like it very much.
Alabama's defense/special teams have scored 12 TD's this season.
Talk about Beamerball lol.
No one is beating 'Bama this year.
Not in the 2nd half, anyway.
What a boring day of football so far
About the only interesting game is Utah/UCLA.
I know right
ATm driving for the backdoor cover? +16.5, 33-14
Nope, Deshawn Hand ends that. I hate that guy.
I wonder if Ole Miss drops more the one or two spots of they lose a close one to LSU. After all they've played a tough schedule.
3-4 Ole Miss will sit at #25 on Sunday.
I'm laughing to stop the tears...because it's crazy enough to be true.

Houston giving their best VT @ Cuse impersonation at SMU.
I find it funny they could lose to SMU and stay in top-25 at 5-2 with a decent and bad loss. We lose to Cuse and drop out. This is why preseason polls are BS (more because they in than us be in).
UNC is top 25 with a "decent" loss (to a bad UGA team) and a bad loss ("but it was only due to the hurricane") and will move up after beating UVA.
I've always thought of a "bad loss" as a loss to a team that has no business beating you. I wouldn't call UNC's loss to us bad, even though we beat them by 31. A blowout loss =/= a bad loss.
Well we both had two losses that was an obvious jump for them because head to head, but if we hadn't lost to BC (Fuck Matt Ryan) We definitely would have made it, we finished 3rd in BCS with two losses.
Then why weren't they ahead of VT the prior week. We both had two losses then too.
Always.
My best college football experience (outside of Lane) was in Morgantown! Cold as balls but the beer kept me warm.
According to many on this site, it's the worst.
I've never been, but they seem rowdy
I'm different and have family on both sides of the mountains. I was there in 2012 to watch them play TCU with family.
So has Tom Herman taken the Texas phone call on the sideline yet!?
Thinking the same thing.
They also still have to play Louisville.
"lol, you guys do whatever. I'm going to Texas"
- T. Herman
Louisville's SOS is about to take another hit. SMU up by 17, with the ball on the Houston 21. 4:40 left in the game.
I know I'm looking way way ahead, but it's looking like we're gonna get a ranked West Virginia team to start the season next year, yall.
I hate the neers, but I like what they're quietly doing.
All for it. That'll be a nice lead up to the game.
WVU still hasn't played a ranked team and that was the worst TCU team in years. Still not convinced they're the real deal but they're looking good. Would love a top 15 matchup to start the season next year.
They still have to play Oklahoma and Baylor. So we'll definitely find out who wears the pants of the Big 12.
holy shit this Osu penn state game
This TT-OU game is entertaining. Not really even a pretense of defense, but it's pretty fun to watch
These night games are finally getting us some decent games for the day.
down goes Ohio state...
Now if only Penn State wasn't a disgrace...
As much as I don't mind seeing Ohio State go down, I hate that it was to Penn State. The most obnoxious fans anywhere.
exactly how I feel. ugh
I'm glad I stopped played destinyou when I did. some good ass games tonight.
They missed a huge and obvious PI at the end of Ohio State game. PSU defense was playing great but tOSU should have had a first down.
I thought the same thing.
this opens the door for louisville...it'd be crazy if VT ran the table, beat Clemson in the ACCCG and then louisville sneaks into the final four
Or! Clemson loses to Florida State, Louisville loses to Houston, we beat Clemson in the ACCCG, and all of a sudden we sneak in as a 10-2 ACC Champion.
Just for shits and giggles.
It's fun to play what ifs, and if team chaos let's it be so, that would be awesome, but I agree we just need to worry about winning the rest of our games
Right now, VT needs to focus on winning vs Pitt.
We need to go 1-0 this week.
I completely agree. Just struck me tonight and decided to throw it out there. I'm just worried about Pitt right now.
Let's not act like we deserve in over a one loss Louisville even if we run the tables and beat Clemson in the ACCCG.
Feel like it's good for college football to have a resurgent PSU and
the balance get shifted a little bit to different teams. That was a heck of
a win. I can't imagine how loud it was there.
No, PSU should never be allowed to be relevant again. Every dollar that program makes should be funneled directly into victim programs and funds. They should be forced to play their games in empty stadiums.
If they played their games in empty stadiums, how would they be able to funnel money into victims programs?
The BIG tv money.
Don't really see the benefit of punishing all the fans and players for the actions of two men. It was a terrible thing but to continue punishing them is overboard. I liken it to people wishing Vick was still in jail. He served his time, just like PSU has.
The fans are horrible.
2 men? How about an entire administration and athletic dept, a fanbase who still supports him and donors who want his tributes put back.
Amen
Ok. You're missing my point. Cheers.
While I appreciate a local perspective, I think all the perspectives presented here are valid.
And yet this still happened this year.
http://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/17556071/penn-state-nitt...
And it'll happen again. You could have probably walked around the tailgates this weekend and seen more of them. You'll probably be able to see them next year. And the year after. So sharpen your pitchfork if you like. Just don't be so obtuse that you choose to believe that what you're seeing here represents support for child abuse.
Supporting the enablers of child abuse is supporting child abuse. You can't support a murderer and then claim you don't support the crimes he committed. PSU as a school and fan base still embraces and supports that former head coach. It won't be long before his statue his back and his name is placed on some athletic building.
Agreed. The crimes were so egregious, the cover ups so deep and the acceptance of the fanbase so swift that they are nowhere near finished with their penance in my book.
Didn't they have a Paterno Day this fall? I got no use for that bullshit. I'm in the construction business, which means 75% of the people I deal with are VT or psu alums. I don't know a single psu alum who doesn't have an effigy of paterno within arms reach at all time and is ready to prostheligize his virtues at any conversation lull.
I almost went to psu, that community is reminiscent of my home. But I have seen no proof that the vast majority of their fans aren't full on apologists who want everyone else to get over it.
Yep look up a few comments. I posted the link. They even ran videos of him on the Jumbotron.
Do you deny that MV7 abused dogs? Did you at the time want him to not receive any punishment for that crime? Did his abuse get covered up by VT or any employees?
No I don't deny MV7 abused, and executed, dogs, who lived inhumanely. I did want him to receive punishment for that crime, and I believe his incarceration and subsequent charity has atoned for his debt. What does VT have anything to do with this? This was MV7's crime and he's done his time.
So unlike you and MV7 you don't deny he committed a crime, you don't celebrate him at dog shows and don't want monuments erected for him at the local dog park. PSU has done or is trying to do all those things with the former head coach.
You do realize that PSU took the statue down, right?
You also realize that MV7 has Michael Vick Hallway on the second floor of Merryman, right? Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't he also have a retired jersey?
Yes because his crimes had nothing to do with VT, that's why I used the dog park as a bad place to put a statue of him up. PSU was where the crimes and cover ups occurred. They took the statue down and there is already a large movement to put it back.
I mean when you say 'large movement to put it back', that isn't really the case. It's a vocal minority.
There SHOULD be a social cost.
You're right, there should be a social cost. And there is. A massive one. One that the community isn't shying away from paying.
They proved they were willing to pay a cost in dollars, as long as it didn't tarnish the football program for more than a handful of years, as that would have been punishing the fans and the current players.
It clearly wasn't significant enough if the program is back to the level of beating Ohio State in 4 years
I agree that they made one of the worst decisions in recorded history.
But I'm not sure they're better than Ohio State, but that the victory was a fluke of college football. Penn State isn't bak, they just got lucky.
I agree, they're not better. They beat Ohio State because they were good enough to have a close enough score at the end to beat them with a few breaks, and that does say something about their program.
I'd agree. I think some good football players still want to go to PSU and still want to play football. Franklin is a good coach. The program overall is working its way back from deserved punishments. I don't see anything wrong with the players wanting to win, or with the fans for rooting for them.
If I still have to hear about how I went to "that school where all those people got shot," they should have to be "that school where the administration let all those kids get molested"
Ugh. That sounds ugly all around. I'm sorry you have to hear that garbage from people, but I don't see why any of us should have to turn around and do that to anyone else, either.
Couldn't have said it better myself (see upthread for me not saying it better myself). Thank you, HITW
Does he really deserve any vitriol?
the anger comes from the fact that they even still have a football program.
There are plenty of other teams to spread the success out to. Doesn't need to be PSU.
"Colorado won 10-5, even on the road that's not a sexy win."
^^^^^^^^THIS!!!!
That was week #2. Rankings tend to be a little less roller coaster-y this far in. A little.
And yet, Penn State jumped from 0 votes to #24. And Houston dropped from #11 to unranked. Which puts us at #25.
Just sayin'.
apparently Tom Herman gave SMU bulletin board material over the past year, and this game was really personal for the Stangs.
Funny part is that his comment wasn't wrong, but was poorly stated and a definite slam. It was also in the heat of the "who should be chosen by the B12" competition.
Did anybody watch that abomination of a game between Seattle and Arizona? A tie because both teams missed chip shots in OT.
Terrible game. Just terrible.
Yes. It was ugly.
Pete Carroll's reaction face was priceless though. I'm sure it'll be gif'ed and meme'd by the morning. Can't wait.
I wanna laugh but it hurts a little
