Can someone with their ear to the ground on college basketball tell me why Rhode Island is supposed to be good this year?
Rhode Island had some very good players miss last year due to injuries and still had a decent season pulling off some major upsets with only 8 players. They are getting those players back this year and are expected to seriously contend for the Atlantic 10 conference championship. The A10 is a generally a pretty damn good basketball conference.
EC Mathews is what your looking for here. He got injured early last season and got a medical redshirt.
They had a few other injuries to the starting 5, but were considered a tourney hopeful from the A10 last season, before said injuries. In fact, the few sports fans in the state of RI were really clamoring to see two teams from this tiny little state to make the tourney last year, PC and URI.
Not snubbed by 36 at all. We need to win to be in.

Last, thing I heard was that we should get an update in the near future. That was 5 days ago. I'm surprised by the lack of news since he's one of our best players.
I had heard from an unreliable source that it was apparently a concussion and he should be cleared prior to the season. We shall see if this source becomes a little more reliable.
From the little I heard it was knee related, and not in a knee to the head kind of way. Multiple flavors of #sauces to choose from.
Kind of curious, does anyone know what the highest preseason ranking Tech basketball has ever had is, and when it happened? I would assume it would have happened in the 80s. Did a Greenburg team ever get any preseason votes?

As far as I can tell VT wasn't ranked in the 2010 preseason poll.
Edit: Looks like we were preseason 21 in 2011.
Edit2: Preseason 21 happened in 2010 for the 2011 season. Also, preseason 15 for the 1985 season is the highest I could find overall.

It's crazy how fast Buzz got us from dumpster fire to looking better than any Greenberg team. Let's hope the improvement continues.
Greenberg was the coach in the 2006-07 season where we were a 5 seed in the tournament. I'm not at all sure we look better than that year
I remember that year. I have a feeling this team will be better. That team in 07 couldn't make it past the round of 32. We'll find out by March. Should be a fun season regardless of the comparison to 07.
We shall see. I like the potential of this team too but we have see teams struggle to make the tournament in years with high expectations before and it's even harder to win games in the tournament. Either way I don't think it's fair to judge a team based solely on how far they get in the tournament, but the 07 team was probably under-seeded and didn't get any favors with a couple poor matchups.
Not a problem, Hokies. Within striking distance of getting those little numbers next to our name.
I don't care if they never rank us all season, though. If we get to the Big Dance in March, I'll be more than happy!

I'm trying to decide if this year may seem like a bit of a regression, as we won't be sneaking up on anyone again. Maybe around a .500 ACC record, bubble team that could go either way.
or is this the type of season where Buzz has his guys and we take a distinct step forward. Win the Wooden tourney, competitive with the Duke/UNC/UVA's at the top of the ACC and get more of a 4-5 seed in the NCAA.
I really could see it going either way.
And that's why I am the most excited I have been for basketball season since at least 2011.

Just wanted to point out that student season ticket sales are up 417% this year. I'm on mobile so I can't embed but Buzz tweeted about it last week.
Also, it seems like season ticket sales in general are up. Hokie twitter was saying that there are only a few left -- in the lowest price point, no less.
I think it's funny how 99% of coaches would say student season tickets were up 400% from last year, but Buzz is too precise for that nonsense.
Take a moment to relish the fact that it's Nov. 1 and we're talking about the football team being on the very far fringe of the playoffs AND shooty hoops having a realistic chance at March Madness.
