It's been almost 28 years since Notre Dame was the undisputed best team in college football (their 1988 championship). Talk to most Notre Dame fans and they will act like that was just last season. I worry they may be suffering from some sort of amnesia and need to be filled in on what has happened over the past 3 decades.

***And yes, I totally get that they had a streak of brilliance since their 1988 championship (in the 90's and their last major bowl win was in the 1994 Cotton Bowl), but this is more fun.
Some interesting tidbits, they played Colorado in a bowl 3 times from 1989-1994. One of those was a loss in the 1990 championship game 10-9. Who knew Colorado was actually good at one point?

Here's ND's bowl record since their last championship. Please note that I'm not looking to compare to ours. I'm comparing them to the image they put forward about their program: that they are THE college football program and everyone else is just riffraff.
Oh, 1994 was the last major bowl game they won. Got it. Yeah, for a longtime, bowls were fixated on fanbases in selecting teams, which lead to ND getting a bowl game above their capabilities every year and a loss (the converse was that BC had no fanbase, so they consistently got bowl games below their capabilities and had a bunch of wins.)
Colorado being good was fun, back when Washington was good. (It was UDub's DC, Phil Elmaissian who came to VT in 1993 to install his "Wide Tackle 6" defense that Bud Foster adapted the next next year) Colorado used to own Southern California, behind lead recruiter Les Miles. The fun part of those Colorado teams was the star QB knocking up the Bible-thumping Head Coaches daughter. That made Jimbo Fisher's wife and Lane Kiffin seem tame in comparison.
And that loss to Colorado should have been a win. The clipping call on Rocket Ismail's punt return TD was bogus. Even as a youngster, I was amazed they kicked to him. One of the great return men in college football history.
All that shows is that they're annually overseeded in their bowl based on name alone.

The real target of my venom in 2000 was Mike Tranghese, who refused to go to bat for his school like the Pac 10's commissioner did. Notre Dame was always going to get that bid (again, remember that era and how bowl teams were selected). So, it came down to Oregon State and VT. The Pac 10 commish sold Oregon State hard while Tranghese (as usual) did nothing.
Yep, it was Oregon St that we had a problem with. And the Trained Goose didn't appreciate what he had in Vick as a marketing attraction. Vick vs. ND would have drawn crazy numbers.
Fuck the Big East in general. Less than a year earlier, after strong arming us for nearly a decade when our desires to be in the conference in all sports were made abundantly clear, they allowed us in only after extorting $8,300,000 from the school. Then we run the table in football going to the BCS title game... And how are we thanked after all that?
They basically tell us to fuck off when it came to getting VT a decent bowl bid.
And those shitheads still wonder why we stabbed them in the back on our way to the ACC.
I moved to upstate NY almost a year ago. I recently met a Syracuse fan who was still pissed at us for "abandoning" the Big East for "money", as if they would have done anything different given the chance, and also as if we had anything to do with the fact that BC was chosen over them during the first(ish?) round.

Umm... we've routinely been overseeded in bowls, when we haven't won the ACC. Which contributes to why we have such an awful record in bowls aside from seasons where we went 6-6.
In 2006, we were picked for the Chick-Fil-A Bowl over Coastal champion Georgia Tech, and again in 2009 over Atlantic champion Clemson.
We had no business being in the Sugar Bowl after the 2011 season (but, to be fair, neither did Michigan).
In 2012, we went to the Russell Athletic Bowl at 6-6, which had the 3rd pick from the ACC (after the Orange Bowl and the Chick-Fil-A Bowl).
In 2013, we went to the Sun Bowl at 8-4, which had the 4th pick (same order as 2012). Main reason we didn't go to the RAB was because they generally don't like to send a team to a particular bowl two years in a row.
Since then, it seems like we've been in bowls closer to our station, but in "down years" during our 10-win run and for a couple years afterwards we were frequently given a top tier bowl to get run over in (except in 2012 against Rutgers, because the Big East was still technically a BCS conference at that point because contracts).
Yep, that changed for us in the mid 2000s. And the ACC has for shit fan bases.

Notre dame was in the BCS title game what 2 or 3 years ago? They were a powerhouse more recently than we have been. Outside of bama, osu and florida (under urban) there aren't any dynasty type powerhouses like ND used to be considered.
