We've used Prices Service Center on North Main Street in Blacksburg for years. Never had a problem. But I also am not a college aged person or student so I can't say how they'd treat them. I also have never needed them to tow my vehicle. Not sure how much this helps but that's all I've got. Good luck!

They were out of business/run out of town/burned down long before I attended Tech, but PLEASE tell me that they had a horrifically garish paint scheme on their trucks. Because that would make them "Tacky" Tek Tow.

Pretty sure Tek Tow just changed their name to Valley Towing but I could be mistaken. Perhaps the owner sold it to someone was just as dickish. I think it happened around 04.
I heard Tek Tow got so bad that they were banned from campus and couldn't do any game day towing.

Check with Dale McCoy at McCoys Auto in... where else... McCoy. Dale's a good guy, very reasonable, and stands by the work he does. A bit off the beaten path from downtown, but he does all my work and goes out of his way to be helpful. 540-639-2933 or 392-7303.

Campus Automotive isn't the bare bones cheapest but I know the owner and GM and know that they do uphold an ethical culture at their shop. You never have to worry if you're being taken advantage of.

just stay away from South Main Auto--that place preys on VT students.
my recommendation? Moore's Body and Mechanical on Kabrich. Marian Moore has got to be the nicest repair shop owner i've ever met and they helped me by doing some good work for a reasonable price while doing undergrad at the 'Burg.

I never had an issue with South Main, they always shot straight with me. Service costs were always reasonable, and they never sold me on anything that I didn't need.
When I came in with a 14-year-old CR-V with 232k miles on it, spitting out a "Cylinder 3 not firing" code, they took it in, did a free compression check, and told me that cylinder 3 lost compression, and that it probably wasn't worth fixing.
That said, maybe it's good that I at least understand a little something about cars, and it's possible that they can tell who they can get away with bullshit with.

r/VT is filled with requests for good mechanics in town with everyone chiming in. a female student told a story how she got worked over at South Main because of her naivete concerning cars with other students filling in with their stories, too.
like you, i know a bit about cars and pride myself on being a shade tree mechanic but there are some things i can't do without a lift, proper tools or certification (mostly A/C work) that i'd rather let a pro work on.

I actually always took my car to south main, but told them they could do nothing without calling me with pricing. Might have paid a little more than I would have otherwise, but without knowing the local scene you can only do so much. That said I can totally see some of the guys there making big a buck off naive customers. They always tried the up-sell with me and I let them make the pitch then declined anything I saw as unnecessary.

I was there during those years but didn't have a car so that's why I wasn't aware.
