Also, Frank was candid about how his age hurt Virginia Tech recruiting.
Among the reasons: As his career waned, Beamer became acutely aware that rivals used his age against Tech in recruiting.
"If it cost you two or three recruits in a year, and then multiply that by four or five years, that's the difference between being an average team and an above-average team," he said. "And we'd been an above-average team for so long. Then we were average too long. It got to be every loss just ripped your heart out, and every win you said, 'Thank goodness,' and get on to the next week. So you didn't enjoy the wins, and the losses were so hard. And you do that for a number of years ... it wears on you."

How awesome of a situation. Not too many players that endure a coaching change get to see their prior coach that recruited them on Senior Day. I'm so happy we have total class act men leading our program.
I will be a massive Whit Babcock support solely because he handled this so incredibly right. It also takes our reputation as a "family" school to a very tangible place keeping him around.
Great article by Teel again - he does a great job covering college sports. Really nice to see the amenable and respectful relationship between Fuente, Beamer, and the coaches and players affected by the transition. Hopefully, they'll all cap it off with a strong finish to the season, regardless of whether we can win the ACCCG and the bowl game, just playing strong, competitive football, and the providing the perfect springboard to next season.
I fucking love Beamer. I hope he stays involved in the program forever and we do our best to accomodate that.
That part about the wins being a relief, and the losses being crushing is exactly how I felt watching the last few years as well. I can only imagine how much worse it must be as the coach instead of just a fan.

My single biggest problem with college football is coaching drama. I understand that its inevitably part of the game, and I don't have a problem with schools wanting to hire the best coach they can, but I can't justify all of the mid-season coaching carousel bullshit. Why can't we save coaching changes for the off season? We won't let the players up and switch teams without permission but its okay for coaches to actively seek other jobs? Its a media circus, and it does nothing to help the players. I could not be prouder of everyone who was involved with Tech's coaching transition.
His retirement announcement helped. He didn't have to lie to the kids or shrug his shoulders when they wondered if he'd still be their coach. Also allowed the coaching search to continue unfettered in the background.
It was the other schools (Memphis, etc.) that had to do the sweating.
I couldn't agree more, I was trying to say Beamer and company did it the right way. Looking at schools like LSU and Texas right now and I'm even more thankful thats not how we do things.
