Virginia Tech ranked #19 in week 14 AP Poll

Hey Fam. Not that the AP rankings matter much over the CFP rankings, but it's nice to know we returned to the AP top 25 @ #19!

We haven't lost, this season, when ranked 25.

Don't give up on your dreams.

Fair enough, but have we lost when we were ranked #19 (hey, at least it's not #17).

There's magic in the 25.

I still don't understand why louisville and Florida state seem to avoid a tumble when they lose. neither of them have very strong wins.... when I compare our wins to theirs I think as a whole we have the edge.

Danny is always open

FSU all season has been a weird cookie. No good wins but losses to good teams have hurt them less. Louisville is the opposite they just got so high that they just aren't hard dropping them now.

I wonder if we will ever get to the point where good wins are viewed in a better light than quality losses.

What do you mean by "good" and "quality"

Pitt has gone 3 out of 4 against teams competing for championships this weekend. The beat PSU, Klempson, and OK state, and lost to VT. They are not good enough to be in a championship, so the teams they beat will lose. Whisky, OK, and VT are locks by the transitive property of football. Unfortunately winning by the transitive power is not considered by the committee, (see buckeyes getting in over us 2 years ago), so none of the winners will make the playoffs.

Sometimes we live no particular way but our own

I got your transitive right here:

I love the VT Klempson proximity here.

Sometimes we live no particular way but our own

Pitt lost to OSU, 45-38.

So maybe OKstate beats OKu. Premise stands.

Sometimes we live no particular way but our own

The crazy thing about Pitt is that they were just a few plays from beating teams like us and UNC. A few of those plays go their way and they're a borderline top 10 team going to play Clemson this weekend.

Using /s is for cowards.

Honestly Pitt scares me next year, maybe even more than Clemson does. Offensively they are clearly one of the best in the country, and I don't think losing Connor would change it next year. Defensively you would think Narduzzi can rebuild it sooner or later. I feel like it's just a matter of time for them to field a team on both sides of the field and compete for National Championships. I don't think they will win it because they probably won't have the recruiting depth, but they could be a huge rival in the Costal division.

say next year they up their defense enough to get two more stops. What if we up our offense enough to get two more TDs instead of FGs? I don't see Putt beating us next year. Long term, Narduzzi may get them to the point of being dangerous, but after this year, I feel like we just shot ourselves in the foot and that's why it was as close as it was.

The VT@Pitt game was about as close it could be on the scoreboard for Pitt. That game could easily have been a 3TD+ win for VT.

Matt Canada has proven himself to be a great OC and should probably win the Broyles award this year, but they are losing a lot this year, not just Connor. I do think they have some potential to become dangerous with a better defense, but I also think Pitt is a stepping stone for Narduzzi.

Pitt is a stepping stone for Narduzzi every coach since Wannstedt.

FTFY

The popular opinion on Narduzzi is that he'll take a Paul-Chryst-like detour through Pitt on his way back to his original Big Ten destination after Dantonio retires, which people think is coming sooner than later

I wonder if Narduzzi raises the interest of ND?

That job is going to open up this year or next. Not sure who they might be considering. Peterson, Chryst, Narduzzi, Franklin...?

I figured we would get a good bounce in the rankings this week. I've noticed this in previous years that they like to get the ranking up for teams in their conference championship. Should of been ranked last week, but some pollsters were probably thinking we still might not make it. Will be interesting to see how the CFP peeps will rank us. I am guessing we will have a better ranking in that poll.

Hokies fan since 1998

I think this is make-up for dropping us entirely out of the rankings after GT, and not sliding us in after ND. I mean, from 14 to unranked is a little harsh for a 10 point loss - even if we did look like garbage during the majority of the game. Now that GT has 8 wins, I think people are realizing that loss wasn't as bad as it seemed at the time. And also, FWIW, style points seem to matter even more than wins in the rankings. Eek out a 3 point win on the road at ND? "Getting votes." Score 52 points over a bad UVA team? 19!

Also like 7 teams in front of us lost...so that always helps.

Always choose joy.

It does, and though I'm not complaining, I see LSU won, but moved 4 spots up. We came in from unranked to 19 for a win over a 2-win team.

We came in from unranked to 19 for a win over a 2-win team

Ask me no questions, and I'll tell you no lies

We are actually ranked above Auburn in the Coaches poll. I guess those assistants decided 9-3 was better than 8-4.

Lets hope we don't get #17 in the CFP Ranking. I think the curse jumped to that poll a few weeks ago.
Edit: 19th is about where I figured they'd put us this week. I'm comfortable with that ranking.

I remember when a 21 ranked Clemson team beat a 5 ranked VT team in the ACCCG. It may be time for some payback. I was listening to the game in Zambia via Tunein app.

Purely out of curiosity, what were you doing in Zambia?

Onward and upward

I was filming a documentary at the time. We went to several different places in country. It made for some great stories for sure. There were some nights we were in cool hotels (safari lodge type of places) then some we camped. it was unique.

what type of documentary? Sounds interesting!

Onward and upward

Louisville's sure gotten a ton of mileage out of that early season beat down of FSU.
