This is a huge loss for Pitt. Canada took a predictable offense (that had less talent at WR with the loss of Tyler Boyd) and turned it into the most proficient offense in the ACC. The Hokies took away the jet sweep component of the Pitt offense, and Canada was able to adjust midstream and almost make the Pitt running game unstoppable against the Hokies. Pitt scored nearly every series against UNC and Clemson, and scored 70 points against Syracuse despite only completing 8 of 19 passes.

That game ended with a score of 10-0. No one else held Bama under 30. Combine that type of defense with the talent that Canada has, and will have, to play with on offense and I think Bama won't just have an easy stroll to the championship going forward.

And Bama lost their OC, who despite what you think of him is pretty good. Puts some pressure in Saban to make a good backfill.

Frankly, I think when LSU hired Coach O, they became one of the few teams in the SEC you can not hate completely on a weekly basis.
I like Coach O, and Canada gives them some innovation on that offensive side of the ball. Beating Saban, or at least keeping Alabama and their boring ass unis out of the CFB Playoff would be a sight for sore eyes.
Wasn't Coach O implicated in a couple recruiting violations last time he was a head coach (not USC).

Pitt had an absolutely legit offense this year. If they had their expected defense, they would have been contenders for maybe more than just ACC honors. Big loss for Pitt, and I'm not upset about it.
He definitely did a good job at Pitt this year and their O was impressive, but one thing to consider was the OL he was calling plays behind. Pitt had a hell of a good OL this year, by my eyes the best one we saw all year. That definitely makes an OC job easier; having a talented and reliable front.
Still, definitely not sad to see him headed to another conference.

Playing a horrible out of conference leaves you less room for error. There's a reason they were the last 1 loss team.

sidenote: Also, we can kiss any idea that ND will ever join as a full member goodbye. OSU just proved that a team doesn't need to win a conference championship game to get a spot in the playoff. ND now has absolutely no reason to join the ACC and every reason not to.

every team has a bad game or two. Sometimes they win, sometimes they don't. College football isn't perfect. The kids aren't pros. They can't be. But over the course of the season, if they do enough to win the games they need to in order to play for and win the conference they play in, they deserve a shot at the playoff. There really isn't any point to having conferences now if winning them doesn't mean anything. Penn State has a right to be upset about the snub. Do I think they were the best team? It's hard to say. Probably not. But they won their conference and that should be enough. How come the bad timing (and style) of their loss to Michigan carries so much more weight than OSU's bad timing loss to Penn State? The problem with having 12 games between 128 teams is that you can't accurately measure all the teams against the others fairly. That's why it's important to have divisions and conferences. That at least gives some structure to evaluating a team's worth. If a team loses a game or two but manages to win their division they get a well deserved shot at playing for their conference title. If they win that, then they should get a shot at the whole thing.
also, Penn State lost to Michigan earlier in the season....what about teams which are playing much better at the end of the year? That used to carry some weight. Losing early and finishing strong used to mean something. Losing late was a death knell. Not. Any. More.

I get that everyone is tired of talking about it and if no body else is going to I won't beat my drum too hard but when you throw out little jabs like that I'm gonna bite.
I thoroughly explained my stances on conferences, strength of schedule, at this point, whether I want to or not, it's just not worth rehashing them over and over again across multiple threads for the sake of everyone not involved. Plus the issue has been settled, Ohio State is in, Penn State isn't.
I'm not sure the issue has been settled..the committee made a decision. They've set a precedent. It has opened the door to a whole lot more controversy in future seasons. Perhaps that was their goal. I mean, we're talking about it. And we will be for a while. Especially if OSU goes on to win the whole thing. That'll make for some interesting discussions across the CFB landscape. I think we can agree that the decision has been made but I don't necessarily think that settles any issues.
As much as I despise ND I'm looking forward to the season they go 11-1 or 12-0 and the committee is forced to consider them against equally qualified teams. Basically, every year somebody is going to be snubbed (this year you could argue PSU) and I think this decision has just opened the door for more teams to feel snubbed at year's end. Brace yourself for more whining, essentially.
If they had gotten snubbed with one loss, it's a big deal. They had more losses and a worse schedule, it's a lot less controversial than say 2014 when Ohio State, Baylor, and TCU were all one loss teams with similar resumes, I think this one will be mostly forgotten, just as 2014 has been mostly forgotten (although their utter dominance through the playoff certainly helped lessen the criticism of the decision).
Eh, if we had defeated a few teams that we should have this season, and Clemson at the end, we would be talking about our CFP matchup right now.
Lets worry about winning all of our games first before we start worrying about how good the rest of the ACC teams are.

Yes, but against a roster of not-great alternative. If Oklahoma hadn't lost to Houston, Washington would be on the outside looking in, I think.
If Oklahoma had not scheduled Houston and OSU they might be in and OSU and Washington out, hard to say. I see Washington as mainly getting beat up over their OC schedule, but they got in by not playing.
The ranking seems to me to say: 1. Beat good teams out of conference. 2. Win your conference. 3. Don't lose. I see nothing about strength of conference division in the criteria, the rankings, or most discussions.

To be honest, I would rather have seen Western Michigan in the playoff than anOSU or Washington. They won their conference, went 13-0 and beat everybody they were asked to play. Yes, anOSU is a better team but WMU went undefeated and had a tougher schedule than Washington who is in the damn playoff.

I felt like when we were winning a not very good coastal and often the ACC championship game, even when it was against BC, we were considered a top team and had respect. If we could have won more of the big games against top competition we would have received the same type of recognition Clemson has now. We are considered mediocre now because we are mediocre. Does how the middle of the Pac North division compare with the middle of the Big 12 conference really make a difference to how you view the conference champs?
Yeah, I can see your point. But how will we be good enough to go toe to toe with those teams in the CFP or big bowls when we didn't have any good teams to play during the regular season? Back when we were winning the ACCCG's there were always people who called us overrated and then we'd go and choke against the important big name teams. I think to get to the CFP and really have a shot, we need to have played solid teams and learned how to make adjustments and really put in the work. Just my 2c
I am not sure playing harder teams necessarily prepares you better for playing better teams - see Boise State in the BCS era. When we dropped close season openers against USC, Bama, BSU etc, its hard to say its because of the previous schedule. I think play calling and talent have been a bigger factor in the bowl losses than how hard the schedule was.
