Virginia Tech's upset of Duke propelled them to thirteenth in ESPN's latest power rankings. Hopefully not an unlucky rank for us.
The Hokies snapped a nine-game losing streak in the series with a win over an Allen-less Duke team -- and it wasn't even close. Virginia Tech scored 89 points. That's the most the Blue Devils have allowed this season.
The basketball school to the north is ranked 14th.

Before the game I was all happy Duke was Allen-less. Now its starting to piss me off he was not on the floor when we kicked their ass. Smug little whiney tripper probably buys all this crap they would have won if he played. I hate Duke even more now, if possible.
"Wait until basketball season"
Ok, we waited. Now we're proving that we're here and ready to play.
we only had to wait 2 days to boot.
VT 13th... UVA 14th?
Heh, this season is just getting started, too
I'm comfortable here.

All Hail Whit Babcock.
All hail!
I watched some of the women's game last night and they said it was the first time ever that both the men and women have been ranked in the same week. That stat is really hard to believe.
It is the first time they have ever been ranked in the same season, let alone the same week. Sauce David Teel
Virginia loses to FSU and moves up a spot? I guess it was a quality loss.
They dominated a great Louisville team on the road earlier that week.
True, didn't think of that. Oh well, Buzzketball is coming for the Hoos.
LOLuva has to get some love somewhere
Anybody see any of that Syracuse-BC game yesterday? Either Syracuse is just plain bad or haven't figured it out yet, but giving up 96 points to BC doesn't suggest that they are very good right now.
A week or two ago, Tony Kornheiser said on PTI that Syracuse needs to stop playing these good Big East teams like Georgetown (8-6) and St John's (8-7) and start playing Virginia Tech 8 times a year. Not sure how 8 more losses would help but I'm no expert
....and now Coach K taking some time off for back surgery. Wonder if Allen stays suspended while he is out.
Pete Gaudet says 'sup.
Wonder if Capel will see his career torpedoed in kind if Duke has a similar season as 1995 when K had to step away as well.
I guess Grayson Allen is a real pain in the back...
I'll see myself out now.
It's been so long that they don't even have our logo with a transparent background.
Same thing happened when we made the AP poll in football.
As a unashamed bandwagon bball fan, it is now my time it shine ! Watching the Duke game I felt like I just kept waiting for their big run and we just kept the foot on the gas confidently it was exciting to see
Damn when was the last time we were ranked in roundball?
November, 2010
For the record, we entered the USA Today Coaches Poll at 23rd
I don't follow college hoops much so I'm not really understanding these rankings. How do we absolutely wreck the #5 team and powerhouse program Duke, and only move to #23 in the AP when we were already sitting just outside the top 25? And how does Duke only drop 3 spots? Can anyone hook me up with an ELI5 (explain like I'm 5)?
Grayson Allen didn't play against us. Duke missed his offense. He produces 16 points per game. We won by 14. If Allen had played Duke would have won by 2. Blue bloods get benefit of doubt.

One game doesn't have the impact it does in football. Duke has played a tougher schedule than us and played us on the road without their full lineup. Eventually if we are that much better than them the rankings will show it, but we have to keep winning.
So we moved up six spots in the AP to #21 from #27. We moved up I believe nine spots in the USA Today poll from #32 to #23. We made our first appearance in the ESPN Power rankings at #13. Each of these has a different voting base and how they evaluate is up to each voter so its possible that many took the Grayson Allen effect to be much more while others did not. Also this was really our first dominant win over a top program and as been pointed out in previous threads our strength of schedule isnt that good with some of our cupcake opponents. Duke has history and some top wins on its side to not drop far.
Thanks!
According to KenPom, we had the 11th easiest non-conference schedule in the country. We didn't deserved to be ranked before the Duke game.
That metric is BS. We played New Mexico, Texas A&M, Nebraska, Michigan and Ole Miss. No way that is legit the 11th easiest non-conference schedule in the country. I don't buy that. It's skewed by our games against Citadel, UMES and VMI--all 299 or lower. Just bumping up from someone like High Point (293) to Gardner Webb (204) would make a significant difference. It necessarily doesn't mean we played no good teams, we played a tougher five than a whole lot of major programs...it just means our money games were against teams that aren't of the best caliber.
Agreed, but that's how the RPI/SOS game is played and Buzz knew that before creating this schedule. The win probability over a 300 team for VT is probably 99%, the win probability over a 200 team is probably 95%. But it's a huge difference to the RPI.
It was clear that we had about five 250+ teams on this schedule that could have been avoided. The argument is that we need wins and that the ACC will provide plenty of RPI boost. That's probably true, but it left us unranked at 11-1.
Yep, and this is exactly why he said we don't need to play teams like VMI anymore after we destroyed them last month. Doesn't do anything for us, even in a dominating win, it likely hurts our RPI outlook than helps.
I'd like us to upgrade from VMI, High Point and the Citadel, to something like James Madison, UNCG and College of Charleston. Those are games we should handle, but also keep our analytics high.
In fairness to ESPN, not first appearance (23 last week, 24 the week before) but still a ten spot jump.
