That was Kirby Smart's choice. Kiffin has a track record of someone who would abandon a team at the first opportunity. That's why I'm surprised he even coached the first playoff game after getting hired by FAU.

Seems like there was a lot of drama being caused by Kiffin and that is the primary reason. That said, he did call the game very oddly, and I've watched most Bama games and could tell something was very off.

I'd wager that it's more about Kiffin's comments regarding the sideline ass chewings. Saban doesn't want his underlings talking to the media, then when they do, that comes out of Kiffin's mouth.

Yeah I'm pretty sure that's true of anyone who's ever coached under Saban. Saban is one of the true GOATs, but I can't blame Kiffin at all for taking another job elsewhere. Saban just absolutely wears people out, especially with how average Bama's offense has been this year.

I also am hoping that Clemson does their best impression of the early-to-mid-90's Buffalo Bills. Get to the 'Ship and blow it. It's the new (yet so nicely familiar) Clemsoning.

Think about it: if Clemson wins the ACC, that increases the national perception of the strength of the ACC. Not only will the ACC have gone 9-3 during bowl season, but they can claim the reigning national champion as one of their members. That's the kind of dominance that the SEC had during their run, and if this can kick off a similar run for the ACC (4 different teams combining for 7 straight national championships), there's a good chance we'd be included in that.
And even if you aren't interested in the potential long-term improvement of the conference as a whole, I personally find it fun to watch games against very good teams in Blacksburg, and it doesn't get much better than hosting the reigning national champs. And we might have a shot at a rematch in December as well.

Think about it this way also, Clemson has already been beating us for recruits in NC and Virginia. They already have been through the growing period and now they are reaping the harvest with back to back playoff appearances, ACC championships, and increased national perception and huge recruiting upswings. This only makes matters worse for us as recruits will continue to spurn for the opportunity to win championships, which they now know is totally possible for Clemson, not for us yet. Additionally, this didn't help us when a better Florida State team won the National Championship. Where was our recruiting boost? Where was our national relevance gained through the coattails of Florida State? What we need to do is beat Clemson when we play them, regardless of whether they win or lose this game. That could be a signal that we are taking the next step and Clemson is on the downturn. Will they remain dominant with out their once in a generation perfect offensive system fit, Deshaun Watson? Will FSU reclaim the Atlantic anyway? These questions are helped by back to back Clemson losses in the NCG, maybe they just aren't good enough to get over the hump with the most talented teams they've ever had (including 1981). A Clemson win just increases the upswing.
Above is the objective part, now is my personal opinion. I'd rather Bama win 100 national championships than have to be around the smug satisfaction and validation of all the ridiculous things I hear Clemson fans say all throughout my lifetime and on a daily basis.

You must not be in sales. Competition is what makes everyone better. No coach on our staff really cares if Clemson wins a national championship. They can spin it in our favor. Hey you can help us beat the national champion, or if your on this team, we play the national championship in our conference championship game. Etc.
Plus some kids don't want to play on a stacked team.

Competition makes everyone better, but it didn't bring about the result you're hoping for last time. This is a bit more complicated, we don't have the same resources as Clemson, and FSU, and to extend your metaphor to the 4 teams from the SEC that won championships, LSU, Alabama, Auburn, and Florida all have more to work with than we do as well. It's not an even playing field but we can capitalize if those other teams are down or if we catch lightning in a bottle. We don't need a maximum strength Clemson, that just makes our lives harder. Don't think for a second that Clemson winning a championship (or even US winning a championship) is going to make us recruit top 5 every year.

There's also looking at a 4-star recruit and saying, "You know, you'll almost guaranteed to be a starter here after one year. You could ride the pine at Clemson for 3 years given their depth". Playing well in a strong conference is great for recruiting. Our recruiting was being hurt by Beamer's age.
"Hey. I want to play for Coach Beamer. He's a legend."
"You do realize Beamer is in his late 60's. Is he going to be there by the time you get on the field?"

Clemson has been beating VT for recruits since Bowden was there. They didn't win the conference much, in those days, though and they contributed to the perception that the ACC is weak.
I'll root for Clemson, because they are an ACC team. I'll also root for Clemson because they are playing Bama.
I won't however do what people hate the SEC fans for doing. I won't chant "ACC" at a game nor be an ACC homer on boards, because I want my team to do well. I'm not taking credit for another team's success.

From what ESPN said in discussion before the bowl game today, there is speculation that kiffin got into it with saban.

You must not have been at the Belk bowl, there was a loud and prolonged ACC chant in the 4th quarter (that I did not participate in).
I was sick the entire week leading up to it, so I gave my tickets to a recent grad, so he and his sister could attend.
