Fellow Hokie in Need of Bone Marrow Transplant

I have a friend (06 graduate) who was recently diagnosed with leukemia and is in need of a bone marrow transplant. We might have seen you all on numerous road trips to Tampa/Jacksonville/Atlanta. Please consider showing your VT support by making a donation.

Fuck cancer.

I agree with statement 100% since I am currently recovering from tongue cancer. It sucks but at least I am stll here.

Hope he gets better!

Appreciate the support already. Thanks

Does he have a donor lined up?

Some of his family have been tested for a match. If not a family match, doctors are fairly confident they can find one. There are over 60 million donors apparently.

What I'm really surprised with is how insurance doesn't cover all the costs, which sucks.

That really sucks for him from a health and financial perspective. I've come to find the very hard way that insurance companies are just out to make money, not to actually follow through on their commitment of insurance. My roommate had stage 4 colon cancer (beat it) and insurance paid maybe 1/4 of his costs. The entire insurance industry is a sham.

Hope he is able to hit his goals and more importantly beat cancer!

His decision was made after a phone call with longtime Virginia Tech assistant coach Bud Foster. All Foster told him was, "We win. They don't."

Best of luck to you, Andrew...

To good Friends... good health... and the besting of Hoos.

If you haven't gotten on a marrow registry, please do. It takes a few minutes, a couple of cheek cells (painless), and your phone number.

I helped to start the Be the Match organization at VT which places people on the national registry. Please take a few moments to look at the website and consider registering. I believe for college aged students the (minimal) fee is waived as well. If you have any questions let me know. https://bethematch.org/

I've wanted to get on the registry for some time now, but it seems like you can only get on it if you show up to an event? Unfortunately, when I search for events in my area (Fairfax) using the website they are few and far between, if any at all. I'd be interested to know the best way to find a place to get on. Thanks!

@vtscottyb

You can register online and they will mail you a kit. You just need to swab your cheek and send it back.

Just registered. Thanks for the info!

Thank you. I just signed up for my testing kit and registered.

I've watched this click up from $1,500 to over $6k since I got home from work today. It's great to see so many people being generous. Keep up the good work!

It's been remarkable the support that Andrew has received. Donations are up to ~$7k in less than a day. Not close to the goal but a great start. UT Prosim

Dad's battling CLL currently, which took his brother and father -- best of luck to your friend.

And, as a cancer survivor myself, let me echo the first comment: fuck cancer indeed.
