Mook Reynolds made the honorable mention for secondary. Glad to see we were at least represented there. I haven't always been the most patient with Shegog, but he played great against Arkansas and definitely deserves some recognition.

Will Shegog replace chuck Clark? He could make Chuck's departure much less of a handicap if he can build on how he played in the bowl game. I'm really excited about this kids future, he has great measurables.
Shegog and Mook are kind of in the same mold, except Shegog has been more of an exclusive WHIP and Mook has been more in the nickel corner spot. I know they are basically interchangeable at this point. I would feel safe with either at safety replacing Chuck.

Interestingly, in base defense, VT was much better with Mook in the game. It wasn't really anything that Shegog did wrong- but Mook was more disruptive blitzing than Shegog and is generally better in coverage. Shegog's big plays all came when Arkansas was in a 3rd and long/obvious passing situation and he was in at the bandit spot in the dime. He made threee terrific plays in that role.
Against today's spreads, I don't know if Shegog is quick enough to cover traditional slot receivers, which is why it would be tough for him to be the every down nickel or rover. He excels as the dime bandit where (except when there is a corner blitz-ugh Deon Kain) he is covering tight ends and running backs.
You think he will have to step up and be a more every down guy to fill vacancies next year? I have a hard time seeing him getting significant play time if it is in competition with Mook, so a position change?
There really isn't a traditional position he would fit into since the whip is not widely used. Not really fast enough to play safety I don't believe. But if he keeps playing like he did in the bowl game they may play the whip on a more regular basis
In the current scheme, I think the roll remains the same- he will come in against 21 personnel and play the bandit spot in the dime defense.
The bigger question is-does Mook move to free safety. I think he is much more disruptive defensively from the whip/nickel spot where he can blitz and hand his receiver off to the free safety. The way Bud has schemed the last few years, the free safety spot usually has been one of their three best cover guys. Mook has some improvement there, and I don't know if he has the range to be a centerfield guy. If there is a position change (and I think Mook may stay put at nickel), I think Terrell moves to free and Mook goes to rover. Again, that is merely my grasp based on my eyes this year. Bud seemingly never does what I expect when it comes to position roulette in the secondary.
Additional note- if Shegog went to the secondary, it would be at rover. And if that happened, teams will start lining up their best receiver in the slot to the boundary to go after him in coverage. He would be fine at strong safety in different schemes- but where Bud always plays his rover as the boundary safety, offenses can get match ups they want easier. Terrell was so good because he was strong in run support and terrific in man coverage. It is hard to find opponents targeting him in the passing game this year.
