If we get Clemson on a Saturday College Gameday could be back in Blacksburg for the first time in 10 years.
Was 2007 the last time we had fuggin gameday? Dammit.
Yes and no...We had a gameday on campus on Monday when we played anOSU in 2015. But it wasnt the full show and they had the actual game day still on that previous Saturday. This would be the actual Saturday morning game show
This could also potentially be a Saturday night game as well
It was College Football Countdown at the OSU game I believe. I think ESPN said they were going to have a pregame show there for the game, then VT PR and Twitter got out of control calling it College Gameday, which lead to some confusion. But it was only an hour-long pregame show leading up to kickoff with David Pollack, Desmond Howard, and I believe Reese Davis.
Rumors on twitter, no Thursday night game for Tech.
NOT LIKE THIS
What the fuck Whit? I mean if this and the Nike deal are the only two things he messes up, I'll take it (because he's been killing it everywhere else), but still...although I bet he has a good reason for it.
When I got to meet Whit he emphasized that "the Saturday gameday experience" is very important to him. He's in a tough spot balancing what the most vocal fans want (Thursday night games) and what he believes what may ultimately be more beneficial for the program (Saturday afternoon games).
Honestly I understand where he's coming from. Last year I only made two games because half of our home games + Bristol were on consecutive weekends in September, and I couldn't make the one game in October because it was on Thursday night.
And a Thursday night game takes away from an OV weekend as well. Whit values recruiting, so that may be a reason as well.
well holy heck! after the last week. if that's what needs to be sacrificed for recruiting I don't mind no home Thursday night games at all. (honestly its 3 less days I have to take off work over the year that can be used for something else)
If Clemson is a primetime Saturday game I'm okay with it. The main allure of the Thursday night game to me has always been that it's a guaranteed night atmosphere more than that it falls on Thursday.
But yeah, if we get all Saturday afternoon kickoffs because of this, it's bullshit.
yeah i actually preferred the friday night game in terms of travelling and all that goes with it. plus, and i dont know the viewing numbers on the thursday v friday games, but we aren't competing with the nfl on friday nights
Big thing about Friday games though is that it's a hindrance to recruiting with most HS players playing on Friday nights
Hasn't stopped Louisville from scheduling them and recruiting well regardless. I swear they played half of their games on Friday last season.
Not on that Friday night.
There are HS games on the Friday after Thanksgiving.
Yes, but not as many. That's playoff season, and many playoff games are on Saturdays. I can't imagine too many players taking school trips during the playoffs if their team is in the playoffs anyway.
We won't be competing with the NFL for Thursday night viewers beyond 2017 either, if the rumors are true. The NFL contract for those games goes through 2017 and it appears likely that the plug will get pulled after that.
That's fantastic news, thursday night nfl games are awful. Getting rid of those might be the only issue that literally everyone involved is on agreement with as well.
Yeah I don't like Friday night games, I think it's weird and it should just be for HS games. Same reason why I don't like the NFL jumping on Thursday nights, just leave that to the NCAA!
Thursday night games were absolutely magical as a student at VT, but (and this may be an unpopular opinion) I really think they have lost a lot of their appeal. Thursdays aren't what they used to be when you're competing with the NFL now. College football used to be the only thing on Thursday nights, and now that is no longer the case. Usually one of our biggest home games of the year gets put on Thursday (it's been Miami twice in a row now), and that is really unfortunate for the fans having to travel from out of town. I would take a Saturday 3:30 or primetime match up at home with Miami over a Thursday night game. Far more exposure, recruits can actually attend, and not as problematic for traveling fans.
As an alumni, I agree with the sentiment regarding travel and the hassles of a Thursday night game. But it was such a good experience as a student. Also I believe the NFL is thinking about getting rid of Thursday Night Football. The NFL Thursday night games have had poor ratings where I believe the college ratings have maintained.
NFL aint' getting rid of Thursday nights anytime soon.
I don't know about that. The pushback from coaches and players is unanimous and loud and the quality of games is horrendous. If ratings continue slipping they'll drop it soon enough
The colorblock jersey schemes were loud as well.
I still live in the area so I still love Thursday night games, but I don't know if it was dumb luck or availability, but we were able to get the best seats we'd had all season for a VERY reasonable price on the secondary market for the Thursday night game last year. I feel like that was because the big money donors can't make those games much of the time.
It is a great excuse to take an extended weekend though.
I agree that in terms of viewership, Thursdays are no longer as good as they were. And by no means are Thursday night games convenient for non-students. Now that I'm not a student I really appreciate Saturday games. Thursdays require people to take two days off from work during the fall. But, I always appreciated the Thursday night game as the game for the students. The energy on campus is different leading up to the Thursday night game compared to most other weeks (unless it's a huge ranked matchup on Saturday night) and its nice for them to have at least one game a year with some electricity to it. If the games are a thing of the past, hopefully the team will be consistently back to 10-win seasons and students won't need a Thursday night game for that anymore.
I think the biggest problem with Thursday night Football is oversaturation. When I was a student in the late 90's, it was great exposure. There was one Thursday night college game and no NFL games. Now, we have the NFL and multiple college games. Playing on Thursday night no longer gives you the attention of the whole football-watching world like it used to. As a guy who lives close to the 'Burg, I love the Thursday games, but I'm not as disappointed as I used to be about not getting one in a given year.
Does the ACC still have to do a certain number of Friday night games? Maybe we got stuck with one of those instead and Whit didn't want two weeknight games? Sucks for recruiting though.
Yes, 5 games per season.
awesome. I prefer Friday nights to Thursday nights these days. No NFL competition, easier travel for us working stiffs and easier for those of us whose "kids" take up their "Saturdays" with their own "sports."
I believe that is usually used when someone is using obscure code words instead of what they mean, as what they actually mean could be construed inappropriately. So we would need to guess how to fill in the blanks.
Though in this case I'm not touching that.
I think the competition of the NFL and CF Thursday night is going a lot better for CF where I think that the competition of Friday night and the majority of people who aren't actual fans of the teams playing having better things to do against CF is a tougher match up. just my opinion no facts but I know when VT is not playing on Thursday I usually flip back and forth although the NFL had some horrible match ups last season but on Friday nights I did not see hardly any of the games unless I was out somewhere that was showing the game or it was a primetime game that a group of my buddies wanted to watch.
I'd be fine with this. Thursday Night Football today does not give the same level of exposure that it used to. I'm all for trading a Thursday Night home game for a 3:30 or primetime Saturday slot, but if we are trading these for a nooner I might change my mind...
Clemson on October 14th
UVA game on Friday after Thanksgiving
UNC October 21st (still hurricane season, be careful ACC)
Dang, it... I'll be on a 7 day Western Caribbean cruise October 14th-21st...
Looks like your cruise and UNCs hopes and dreams will end on the same day!
{humble brag}
If we're gonna do a Friday game, Black Friday is absolutely the day to do it.
The insanely cryptic dude who's always at the pub over at 247 seems to be hinting that Oct. 14th is a BYE, and the Clemson game could be 9/30.
i bye that
Really? I had heard from someone else that it's going to be the 14th.
Either way, it's a chance at Gameday.
If we do play Clemson 9/30, and 10/14 is a bye, whomever we play 10/7 has trap game written all over it.
Edit: Looks like at BC on 10/7. Ugh, a trip to sleepy Chestnut Hill, likely a nooner, right after the big Clemson game.
Obligatory:
What does this even mean? Insider info? Speculation? Your wishlist?
Collection of inside info that i've collected. May or may not be wrong.
I'm bringing some UDel alums down for the game. Should South Main Street Inn be easy to reserve? Does anyone know when you can start booking hotels?
Should have been done months ago from my experience.
months ago? i wasn't aware you could book that early
That wouldn't make too much sense...How could you book hotel rooms when you dont even know when games are going to be played? Would make sense that the hotels open up the reservations once the schedule is released
The Delaware game has been slated for September 9th for a good long while. Usually it's the conference games that get dates assigned when the final schedule is released.
OOC games are set months ago, the other option I've seen used is. Book every weekend during the season and then cancel ones that don't end up as game weekends. Obviously you can only do that at hotels that allow cancellations.
OOC game dates aren't set in stone until the schedule is officially announced, generally except for neutral site games and certain other big games. They don't change often, but it has happened before.
actually... we reserved the rooms for every Friday and Saturday night during football season almost a year in advance. all they require is a credit card # but no actually payment at the time. my situation is a little different because I stay in charlotte on Friday night (due to 9 hour drive and leaving after work) and Christiansburg on Saturday nights. but this works out pretty well for me for anyone that has issues finding a room. as long as you cancel something like 2 weeks in advance they don't charge you anything.
With the September schedule already set, and I don't see any changes on that, it's easy to see why we may not get a Thursday night game.
What does the September schedule have to do with Thursday games? It's not like we frequently play non-conference games on non-Saturdays. Here's a list of all such games since the bowl streak started (1993), noting that we generally have ~2 weekday games each season:
UVA - Friday, November 29, 1996
Clemson - Thursday, September 23, 1999
@ECU - Thursday, September 7, 2000
Marshall - Thursday, September 12, 2002
UCF - Sunday, August 31, 2003
aTm - Thursday, September 18, 2003
@ECU - Thursday, November 5, 2009
OSU - Monday, September 7, 2015
There's no wiggle room, especially since we play Clemson.
Now schedule is official, it looks like we are starting to alternate a Thursday and Friday game each season. Oh well.
Edit: last time we had no Thurs night home game was 2013, seemed sooner to me. Still believe there is some pattern to this. Nevermind, it was 2015. Never trust a reporter.
Cam approves, I do too.
Did Cam used to be #18?
Cam was #18 his freshman year.
Indeed. He took over 5 after Josh Stanford left, IIRC.
Dammit, I have a wedding to attend that day.
Who has a wedding the day after Thanksgiving?
That seems... odd to me.
It's probably to save money on catering.
the whole family is already in town?
It's my cousin. She's apparently been disappointed for years that she's never had her whole family together for Thanksgiving, so she's decided that her wedding will be a good tool to make it happen. And since she was the flower girl in my wedding (in addition to just being very close in general) and wants my daughter to perform the same role in hers, there's no way football can take precedent.
Makes sense! It would just be an overload of things going on for me if there was a wedding the day after Thanksgiving. Granted, I'm much more of an introvert than some.
you old.
When is the ceremony? The game is at night, so if you can convince them to have a tv at the reception, it might work out (or dip out to the bar for a bit).
Is there a guarantee that it will be a night game since it is a holiday weekend? I could see this being an earlier kickoff like 3:30.
Saturday would also have worked.
If only to avoid one's wedding on "Black Friday".
Can we please officially call our all-black uniform Johnny Cashes??

You can run on for a long time
Run on for a long time
Run on for a long time
Sooner or later God'll cut you down
Three fall weddings this year, and one Clemson game that cannot be missed...feels like I'm playing russian roulette.
when are the weddings?
October 7th, 20th, and November 11th.
The 20th is a friday (that one's a hokie), but with my wife in the wedding turning around and making it to blacksburg might be tough.
you should be fine, hopefully the friday one is a home and the other two are away
People need to learn to get married in the Spring, like God intended.
You get engaged on the day after Thanksgiving, at a football game.
Like Sam Rogers.
I wish everyone was like Sam Rogers.
This is nice and all, but whose recruiticorns are we stealing today?
Schedule is out.
By team
Clemson on the 30th, bye on the 14th.
Really like having back-to-back Saturday home games in Oct. Beautiful time of the year in Blacksburg.
Oh phew the weddings I have to attend this year are ODU and the bye week.... Feels like I hit the damn lottery
Same here. I drew a trip to Buttfudgietown, Maryland during the ECU game.
Looks like UNC is getting a bye week before they play us...
No they don't? They play UV....
Ohhhhhhh
Clemson early might be the look. They have a tendency to iron things out later in the season.
And the ACC may be thinking they want the loser (read: Clemson) to have a chance to battle back into the playoff...
Tough 5 game stretch:
Oct. 21 UNCheat
Oct. 28 Duke
Nov. 4 @ da u
Nov. 11 @ chop block
Nov. 18 Pitt
Nov. 28 Light scrimmage
The entire Coastal Division gauntlet all back-to-back, starting Oct. 21.
