I am starting this in preparation for Saturday and since the New Scoreboard thread is so long. I won't be at the game to see it in person. Add your thoughts about the big board.

It's bitchin'
Thank goodness for a new scoreboard thread. The old one was so long, and so chock-full of images, I didn't want to try and load it.
Hopefully, it can jar opponents with Enter Sandman like never before!
I was over at the Rec Sports fields (by the tennis complex, if you know where that is) for the past few days, and you can hear them doing the PA testing loud and clear. That sound system is BOOMING! And the board is so big, you can see it clear as day from there.
They have been blasting Hotel California like nobodies business. Vibrating the handrails outside of Cassell.
Someone going to the game saturday needs to try and record Enter Sandman just so we can have a little taste. :)
ill be in north right beneath it. i can try if i remember
or if you're still alive.
I've been thinking...it's got to be so loud. I remember in the east stands it was sometimes hard to hear it...now, I bet you can hear it loud and clear
You can hear it loud and clear in the SEZ, it's ridiculous
I can't wait to make it to a game this year...
Heading there for the UNC game. October cant get here soon enough!!
That's the game I am trying to get to. So true, c'mon October.
Accidental downvote :(
I gotcha +1
on purpose -1 (JK)
+1 for all of you
got him
Hoping to make it for the Pitt game.
You can hear it lots of places outside of Lane Stadium. It's that ridiculous. They were testing the system with Enter Sandman when I was walking home today. Felt rather pumped up just to get home and do homework.
I clearly need to walk past Lane more often. Just to get more work done.
I will record it. Please ignore the bourbon spillage and jumping though..

The new scoreboard.... it'll get after ya.
I live on Green street and it wakes me up every morning at 9. I was at a soccer game the other day and it rattled the bleachers
Clearly this is a way of getting back at the people who supported Stadium Woods. No indoor facility, no sleep!
or...could there be some devious plan in place - where the increased sound speeds the aging process of the nearby trees, causing them to die 'naturally' ... I've been suspecting it all along- I think we are onto something here. go with it!
I'd like to know if it will distract players on the field, especially at night games (will have to wait on that).
The sound aspect will have to be experienced in person... does not translate on TV.
would like to see this on the new board just for kicks~8)

TO ANYONE ATTENDING THE GAME TODAY:
If you would be so kind to take/post some video of the new video board in action-
a remotely located (PA- not that remote) HOKIE would greatly appreciate it!
GO HOKIES - beat the filling out of that cupcake!!!!
Where in PA
Media - 10 mi west of Philly
Philly! Highfive
go vick beat the skins!!!!
Go Vick! Throw for 600 yards in a loss!
You're just saying that so you can rub it in with the final score in our TKP Fantasy matchup this week...
I'm not in the TKP Fantasy matchup...
Well then alert the authorities, we have an impostor among us...
Oh really? There's a HorseOnATreadmill in the TKP Fantasy? Can't blame them, it is a pretty good screenname. DogOnAnUnderwaterTreadmill appears to be the wave of the future, though.
Clearly. It's my new avitar
MechaJellyfish in a pool
That's me, sorry...
And it's not HOAT exactly, it's "Treadmill Horses". I always have trouble coming up with FF team names, so I kind of stole it.
Also, Vick has been the best value pick I've ever had so far. In two leagues.
PA Hokies FTW. State College
Warfordsburg FTW?
FTW, I guess. That one gas station I used to stop at on 522 is now closed, which sucks, because you don't see another gas station until Breezewood. I was seriously worried I'd run out of gas last time I came back up from NOVA. What the hell, Warfordsburg?
I think they made all their money selling weed. Very shady. You gotta remember the Sheetz in hancock is your last chance, lol. I can't believe you even know about warfordsburg. You ought to stop by next time through. Nice grazing here.
Am I the only one that thinks Warfordsburg sounds like the name of a future QB for the Hoos?
whats FTW?
and Warfordsburg sounds like a town founded by someone named, "Warford" ~8)
FTW = for the win.
OK thx
kinda like "Final Answer" gotcha.
is that what everybody means? i always took it as the old biker/punk rocker meaning of FTW=fuck the world haha
Damn, I don't normally go through Hancock anymore. It's usually a 495-270-70-PaTurnpike-99 route for me. The grazing does look nice, though.
That is funny to me that the gas station was like the Warfordsburg barber shop. And in response to the post below, yeah, it sounds like a future LOLUVA qb for sure.
Does it have an AUX/USB/HDMI port? Quick someone in the North Endzone hook in and play some Youtube videos from your ipad/iphone!
Someone bring me back!
Scoreboard was insanely loud! It did however go out for a short period and then their was a blue streak on the right side of the board as well. All-in-all I was thoroughly pleased with the new board.
Talked to one of the guys from panasonic and they said there was a complete power failure in the control room which is what caused the board to go out. Hopefully this is a one time thing and it will be good to go from here on out.
Otherwise it was pretty good debut for the board.
Here is the link to the new score board in action. Just score down below the imagine of the Hokies up 7 0-
http://vthokiefootball.tumblr.com/
Too many damn ads. During a replay there are 7 ads on the screen at once (6 boxes, 3 on each side and 1 in the main view area). When they turn them off and show the game or something it's glorious.
Sound system is much better. Loud but not blaring/deafening.
That's pretty much the way it is with almost all new big scoreboards. Gotta bring in the ad revenue somehow.
Yeah the ad space actually cuts into the main screen/in game view. That was kind of annoying. All in all, it was great. Sounded fantastic and looked wonderful. Feel bad for some of those students though...
This video is getting shared around Facebook:
Seems pretty loud, and they're playing Sandman into the lyrics for the first time in many years, so that's nice. I wish the camera work was better and focused more on the scoreboard a bit, but I understand what they were going for here. Hopefully others will post their own videos that give those of us who couldn't be there a better sense of it.
Wow. A lot louder than I remember.
I have wanted them to play out the song for YEARS!! They would normally kill it right when the team ran out, it was kinda anticlimactic
I know, I get that they want to play Tech Triumph as we run out but I personally would much rather hear more of Sandman. We hear the fight song a billion more times during the game anyway. I want to hear 60,000+ screaming "Exit Light, Enter Night" in unison.
I just had a glorious mental image of Sandman during a night game (do those exist any more?) where they did lighting effects. Dim the lights at the start of Sandman (a nearly pitch-black Terror Dome), flash them when it really kicks in with that classic riff. How cool would that be? Probably a safety issue, though...
That would be cool but the lights aren't like the lights in your kitchen where you can just put in a dimmer switch :) They need to "warm up" i believe and take a while to do so. I think they actually turn them on pretty early for night games.
But yes, using the new scoreboard for some dramatic effect would be kind of cool
Yeah, any lighting of that magnitude takes time to warm up. Even the baseball lights take a little while to come on, if anyone remembers from that game a few years ago where they went out mid game. They are different from basketball lighting where you can do the effects.
Yea, just a cool thought. Maybe once they've really got the scoreboard working 100% they can do some cool effects, or just play BillDozer's videos to get everyone pumped.
Impressive crowd noise! I love it!
wow that video is annoying...just hold it steady for 3 seconds...crazy. I dig the perspective though.
My thoughts exactly. Probably the person that shot it is like:
I liked the feel in terms of "this is what it's like on the field," but slow down just a bit and it would have been awesome. Nice to have a bit of perspective, though.
How to Highty Tighties keep themselves from jumping is beyond me. If that's the discipline it takes then you all are way better men and women than me. I'm impressed.
It doesn't seem loud, it most definitely is loud. No matter how you record it on video its nothing like being at the stadium. It was superb. That sound system is boooming
WELP. This was incredibly #goacc

should have meme'ed it bro
whats with those 2 sitting? Come on guys!
Better be drunk.
Not my video, but this may be the best version i've seen on youtube thus far:
Videos of our entrance never get old. Is it Saturday yet?
Weird... Enter Sandman kept playing as the team ran onto the field... music used to cut out as the players ran out of the tunnel.
The only problem i have is not seeing all the offensive/defensive stats. also if they put stuff on the bottom of the screen nobody in north can see them...
I will defienitely miss the stats on the scoreboard. I enjoyed seeing the other teams have negative rushing yards. But as far as the stuff on the bottom of the screen, just look across the field to the banner in the SEZ. It's just the score, down and yardage, location of the ball, time and quarter, and number of timeouts left (I hear Mike London is currently trying to bank all his from each game this season for when he plays us this year). It's easier to look across the field than behind you and this way never causes you to turn your back to the game.
i forgot my glasses saturday, and it was a pain in the ass to try and make out the down and distance...
They still have the stats displayed on the big board, but now it is in the lower corners of the screen and only one category at a time and they scroll through rushing, passing, total yards. This is sub-optimal and I think some additional layout work needs to be done to improve the amount of information that the screen displays. The arrangement of the ad panel overlays is also kind of meh. But that's all correctable.
The size of the thing is amazing. It's hard to appreciate even in pictures. It's just massive. It looms over Merryman. Pretty cool, and in the full context the logo and "Home of the Hokies" on the back of the board is perfect.
Also, couldn't they have just sold ad space to put on the screened portion over the speakers and not to take up space on the video screen? You lose way too much with ads lining either side of it.
I personally am glad none of the ads are permanent (aka - physical and over the speakers, rather than digital on the screen alongside replays, etc.). If the board is off, you shouldn't still see ads. I was watching a game with the brother of a Hokie friend (who went to USCw), and when they showed the old scoreboard, he blurted out 'McDonalds?!?'. He wasn't trying to poke fun at us, but he was so surprised by the golden arches displayed prominently (and permanently) that it came out that way, and I felt a little embarrassed at what must have looked like a kind of 'small-time' thing to him.
Anyway, despite the fact they take up some of the screen, you have to remember this screen is like 9283792138740135 times (roughly) bigger than the last one, so you're still getting a lot bigger highlights. Just my $.02.
I can't stand the advertising. I went to the USC Gamecock opener against UNC and their screen is massive, HD, and during play has a FULL SCREEN video with no ads or anything getting in the way.
Are we that hard up for ad money that we need to hamper the fan experience?
O wait.. stick it in, hokies respect, vintage logos, sugar cookies...
My 2 cents (and worth every penny) - I would sell the ad space as part of what the fans want to see. For example a transparent background on the left with the two teams stats (so you can read it but still see the full screen), with the sponsor at the top. Scrolling scores and alerts (ala ESPN) at the bottom with "brought to you by".
Other than taking up about 50% of the new screen, what really bugs me about the ads is they sold so much space to small/local companies. How much did Stop In or Zaxby's pay for those spots? It's not like Coke, Apple, BestBuy or some national brand gave a truck load of cash to take up that much screen space. Just seems like small time thinking.
The best part of ads on the screen is that it can be MODIFIED
The screen is very much still in 'tweak mode' .....
ads can be made smaller or removed at critialcal moments.
I fully agree that they can be moved. However, I seriously doubt they will be. I'd bet the advertising sale included the layout and percentage of screen.
As opposed to the old board ... the ads on the new board can be modified.
Let's say a generous, well to do, philanthropic, alum is distracted by the ads like the rest of us ...
one generous donation can make the ads disappear without much effort!
Now to find that philanthropic alum... (BRB)
Maybe if the entire TKP community got together and pooled our resources we could either: 1) buy a "Bud" tracking board (which Budweiser would immediately take over for us) or 2) buy a diet coke.
liking your thinking.... #booTHEads
Just thinking here.....we got Box, we got Billdozer & MStrawther (hope I spelled that right...it's late). That's like a professional ad agency right there....we can do the ad...all we have to have is the means to get it up on that gorgeous 1080p humongoboard in the stadium. Be a great place to advertize horse on a treadmill shirts....TKP's logo...let your imagination run wild!
Wisconsin held a movie night to break in their new scoreboard. I wish VT would have done the same thing. I mean, they ended up showing Remember the Titans. I football movie set in VIRGINIA!

Ugh that totally should have been us doing that.
Noooo I'm so glad we didn't personally...
Mike London sits in the back and takes notes on how to coach a football team.
that's how they trick students to attend games...make them think they're going to see a crappy movie...rather than a crappier football team GO HOKIES!!! ~8)
I think they should show Cavman fall from his horse over and over prior to each game.
That would be totally awesome. They could use it for the noise meter. Have a the video of him up on the screen, rocking it back and forth about to fall off. When the crowd gets loud enough, he falls off.
We should do this on the big board when UVA comes to town.
