Relevant and recent update on Virginia Tech 4-star DE target Brad Johnson. He's apparently torn between both the Hokies and Gamecocks.

If a defensive recruit is ever torn between two schools, go with whichever school has Bud Foster, the guy who's been doing more with less for about 30 years.
higher caliber kids want to know who has the better track record of producing NFL players than who has better college defenses.

He's been to USC 10 times, and he's been to VT once, yet the decision is this close and may go down to signing day.
This tells you that Fuente and the VT staff are doing something right.
I am on record saying that Johnson and Debose were my two must gets in this class once both had offers. Johnson isn't as good as Debose technique-wise, but Johnson is so physical and naturally strong, has longer reach, and gives so much effort that i think he has more upside. Debose is more ready to play and no matter what happens with Johnson I think Debose is a two year starter if not more at VT. Both guys fit the ethos that made the Hokies great in the first place.
Outside of the home-town effect (which I don't know applies given that Johnson grew up in the shadow of Clemson, where USC-E is treated like the guy who runs the ferris wheel at the county fair), versus VT having more success recently/better positioned for conference glory, I don't know what the other factors could be. Both VT and USC-E's scheme's fit Johnson well.
I had heard that Johnson had a cousin who played at VT. Anyone know who that was?

I'm 24 and my cousins on my mom's side are 25, 30 something, 30 something, and 44. Simple situation where my mom's oldest sister had children young and my mom, the youngest of the siblings, had children at a more regular time.
It happens. All my cousins on my dad's side are at least 30 years older than me. That's what happens when your uncle starts cranking them out in his teens and your dad was 50 when you were born.
Agree with your take on the two, but I still think Johnson is more ready to play for the reasons you list. Just being more physically ready to take on the demands. Not many 220 lb freshmen are ready to play DE even with our smaller personnel.
Johnson also killed it against better competition at the shrine bowl where he was the defensive MVP and was consistently mentioned as the best DL in practice.
I think muschamp will sell him in the end on getting DL to the NFL. He's had 5 star and high 4 star talent to work with so it's easier but he can point to more.
I want Johnson badly. I don't know if it will pan out. I have no idea when VT got in on him, but I sure wish it had happened early with him and Debose.
