Who Hates Virginia Tech

So, among others, Hokies hate:

Matt Ryan
Clemson
Narduzzi - and Pitt in general
Jim Harbaugh
Kansas
Georgia
And, of course traditional rivals

While I don't normally promote the comments like "fuck Matt Ryan", recent outbursts by others on here caused me to wonder which fanbases are in the hate Virginia Tech camp. Other than the traditional rivalries, I could think of these:

Arkansas - I mean that has to still be stinging right?

Notre Dame - right when they started to feel a little better about themselves, we reminded them how bad they really were.

Nebraska - tyrod broke their heart.

These are only a few. Who else has an unreasonable level of hatred toward the hokies?

You have no proof of this.

West Virginia hates us. I can't wait for September.

I would say Virginia, but I think they've grown numb to the pain.

oh no, rest assured, they hate us.

Only personal experience is with A WVU fan, not alum who hated us when I mentioned I went to Tech.

UVA - just because but it has dulled over the last 13 years. I wonder why?

"Most students who are there want to be nowhere else... Once a Hokie, always a Hokie." - Chris Fowler

Anyone else think UVA fans hate VT more than VT fans hate UVA? I find myself getting more amped up for MIAMI, UNC and PITT games......Over a decade of clown stomping has spoiled me......and I could care less if they are better in Basket-Weaving, shuffleboard, baseball and debate......FOOTBALL is king.

It's easier to hate on your rivals.

I think the hate goes more from our side towards theirs than vice versa.

I just can't stand the entire douchy culture of UVA. I hate that they have to count their years. I hate that they call campus "grounds". And I hate their irrational worship of TJ. Whenever I see Bronco Mendenhall interviewed, all I can think is "what a giant dork." (Okay, I'd probably be thinking that for whatever team he was coaching.)

But UVA fans? They don't care. Mention 13 in a row, and they just scoff and spout off some BS about "public ivy" or basketball season or that UNC or Maryland are their true rivals.

So much this. UVa just hates us for being "dumb rednecks" which doesn't even make sense.

"But UVA fans? They don't care. Mention 13 in a row, and they just scoff and spout off some BS about "public ivy" or basketball season or that UNC or Maryland are their true rivals."

The infuriating thing is that you know if they actually were any good they wouldn't be able to shut up about it. In 2011 they got pretty obnoxious when they had like 8 wins. They are total fair weather fans.

How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Jet Sweep

I know a strong contingent of UVA fans who absolutely hate anything related to VT. Ironically, they fit the "redneck" stereotype far more than most VT fans. I have a theory about this type of fans though. They continually harp on UVA being academically superior to VT. By supporting UVA sports, I honestly think they believe that association makes them more intelligent or socially superior than VT fans. I have never heard more comments from some people who couldn't even sniff a high school diploma, let alone college, about me not being smart enough for UVA.

Reminds me of that video of the redneck Uva fans celebrating after beating FSU, and then going on to say that they were going to beat us the following week.

They didn't. 38-0 bro happened.

I've ran across many LOLUVA fans I would place into this category.

If you play it, they will win.

I've had this conversation a few times with UVa fans that I work with...I was in the IT sector and when they found out I went to VT they asked me why I picked Tech. I tell them: I'm a Math major, why would I go to UVA? Shuts them up pretty much every time. This would work for engineering or any of the other many majors where Tech is superior to them. Feel free to use it whenever you want, I'm sure you'll enjoy the results.

It should work, but it doesn't. I had a mechanic I worked with who loved to badmouth tech's engineering program and he was a die hard LOLUVa fan. It didn't matter that I mentioned I didn't even apply there despite growing up 15 minutes from campus because I only considered top 20 engineering programs. It also didn't matter that this guy did not go to LOLUVa.

I've found this statement applies to most schools.

I have no idea what you could be referring to here.....

"GO BACK TO YOUR ROOM LITTLE BROTHER, THE CUP IS COMIN’ ON HOME!”

"In my experience the ones that didn't actually go to UVA are worse than the ones who did."

So much this. I call them "Wahoo Wanna-Be's" (pardon the errant apostrophe, I put it in for pronunciation)

I think the same could be said for our jerk fans too. There are plenty of nice fans who did not attend but it seems most of the annoying ones also did not.

I think our ratio of asshole fans is pretty low overall but the ones I run into are usually students. In the cold ass thursday night game we played against UNC in 2011 my buddy who is a UNC fan was waiting with me to go in the gate and two kids hemmed him up right as we were going in. The first thing out of the guys mouth was, "You know you're gonna lose tonight asshole." despite being roughly six inches taller and outweighing my buddy by about 50 pounds. That's the only time I thought I was gonna have to fight a Hokie fan at a Hokie game. Luckily his buddy pulled him back and apologized for the vigorous tailgating they had done. On the other hand my brother is a die-hard Hokie and he's a terrible fan. I once threatened to drag him to the FSU section and leave him during the 2010 championship game.

"I'll put a quote here to distract you from my inane comment."-Me

I think Pitt fans, like Pat Narduzzi, probably hate us a bit. I personally experienced the hatred of Pitt fans, I think it was the '03 season, we had a Saturday night ESPN game at Pitt, and both teams were highly ranked, with ESPN doing their Gameday segment there. Friend of mine has Pitt season tickets (he did his undergrad at VT, grad school at Pitt, and he's a Pitt native), and had an extra ticket for that game, so he invited me up. Tailgated with a bunch of Pitt fans, and I was wearing my VT jacket and such, and everything was cool once they knew who I was with. Then walking into the game from the tailgate, had some asshole Pitt fan pretending like he didn't see me with the intent of blindsiding me on the sidewalk outside Heinz Field. Needless to say, I saw the cat and nonchalantly lowered the brim of my head and shoulder into his, reverting back to my hs football days. [As also a Ravens fan, I was prepared for this, having been to Ravens-Steelers games in Pittsburgh.] My buddy was like, "You ok? You know that guy?", and I was like "Not really", and he was ready to go after his fellow Pitt fan.

We lost that game in exciting, down to the wire fashion, so coming out of the game, most Pitt fans were cool with the VT fans up for the game, but I fear it could have been a little nasty on the way home had we won the game.

I don't think Pitt's hatred for us is on par with WVU, primarily because we have more of a history with WVU, but it's out there.

I applied to UVa solely to reject them. It felt good.

Class of '02. GO HOKIES!

I regret not doing this. All I had to point to was a lot of people from my school with much worse grades getting in...

My wife' sister was on a tour at UVA during HS and was told by the guide that no one that is accepted to UVA turns them down and goes elsewhere. She was accepted to both VT and UVA and personally wrote a rejection letter to UVA to tell them no and she was going to VT. (Wife, her sister, and parents are all Hokies).

Having a conversation with you is like a Martian talking to a Fungo.

.

that is a strange claim.
My sister applied, got in, and turned them down.
I didn't bother.

Onward and upward

I had a girlfriend who went to UVa and transferred to VT as an undergrad.

I had another friend who transferred from VT to UVa.

So anyone who makes blanket statements like those is lying.

I had a sister who transferred from VT to LOLUVa to double major in theater and english. Said LOLUVa was full of insecure, backstabbing douches and that Tech felt like home. Checks out in my book.

Warning: this post occasionally contains strong language (which may be unsuitable for children), unusual humor (which may be unsuitable for adults), and advanced mathematics (which may be unsuitable for liberal-arts majors)..

The culture there just attracts individuals with a superiority complex. It makes them feel better about themselves and hides their own insecurity to think they are of higher status than everyone else. Some people just need that to feel good about themselves I think.

Had a good friend transfer from VT to UVA for English who was also in the marching band. Made friends who are great, down-to-earth people. There are good apples and bad apples in both schools. I just like to think that VT has vastly better good:bad ratio than UVA.

This. I don't know why people make assumptions. Not everyone is a popped collar douche at UVA, and not everyone at Tech is a red-neck hill-billy either.

Parents encouraged her to look at all options, but after hearing the guide make that statement, she immediately felt the desire to not be around that type of attitude. Granted, not all UVa's are like that and there are plenty of great experiences going from one to another and vice versa, but there are also plenty of stories about the perceived superiority and pompous arrogance by Hoos. Hers happens to be one of the negative ones in the midst of millions of experiences and drove her to VT even more.

Having a conversation with you is like a Martian talking to a Fungo.

.

I got accepted to both Tech and UVA. Went on tours of each campus in March for spring break senior year. Went to Tech and it was mid 60s, sunny both days and the tour was awesome. Drove down to UVA the next day, parents car got a flat tire, it was pour down rain and ended up leaving the tour early.

My decision was easily made.

"Be yourself is about the worst advice you can give some people"

Haha, you sound like a "fair weather fan".

My wife had the opposite happen. She visited VT on a cold, rainy day during Tech's spring break so there were no students on campus. She ended up going out of state (she was majoring in engineering so she never considered UVA). Years later, she has been to VT multiple times with me and loves the place.

We have a daughter at Tech now, who applied to (and was accepted to) UVA, for the sole purpose of declining their offer of admission.

I give props to you all who apply to UVA just to turn them down. After doing 6 college applications, I think my diss was not even giving the effort to fill out one of their dumb applications

I only took a single visit to Tech in High School. It was in November. Cold and grey can't keep me away.

I ran into a UVA fan who wouldn't admit that it was harder to get into a service academy than UVA.

Yep, they give those congressional recommendations out like candy.

"How the ass pocket will be used, I do not know. Alls I know is, the ass pocket will be used." -The BoD

The only time I truly hated a UVA grad was when I got my first job. Was looking for an apartment with my Mom, and we were taking a break out to lunch. Overheard the family at the table talking about college decisions, and potentiality going to Tech.

I turned around and told them I graduated from Tech and loved it, etc. Turns out their daughter was considering UVa and VT, and their parents were UVa grads. Told them I was moving up here for my first job, and then the mother looks at me and goes, "how did you even find a job with a degree from VT?"

So I told her that I was starting my job on Monday, and that I was going to be a rocket scientist.

There's always a lighthouse. There's always a man. There's always a city.

Also, I find that crazy to hear. Everyone I've talked to, even UVA grads, equate VT Engineering to excellence. I'd chalk up your encounter as more of the exception than the rule.

They only pretend to not care/that football is irrelevant because they suck at it. If they were any good at all, you would never hear the end of it. That's why they talk so much about basketball, baseball, and non-revenue sports. The moment they start slipping in basketball, I'm sure you'll hear excuses about it and why it's not as important as the rowing team.

I will say that if they would rank schools by the amount of Douche bags in the audience UVA would be number 1 in the nation. Look no further than that basketball games crowd......

I can attest to this. So many douchebags coming in wearing suits after work.

Unless it's number of douchebags in the audience at the spring game. Then they'd be dead last

You know the scene where the big brother is casually leaning with his arm outstretched against the little brother's head? The little brother is ticked and swinging with all his might while the big brother just yawns and looks at the watch on his other arm. That's VT vs UVA although lately the little brother isn't swinging furiosly he's just kinda throwing an arm up half-heartedly...

why do we hate Georgia?

I don't think Ark, ND or Nebraska hate us. Nebraska for sure. By all accounts great fanbase. ND I am sure thinks it is a fluke because of their down year(s).

I would only remind you that the hate for Matt Ryan around these parts is pretty hard to rationalize. Georgia wore off pretty quickly, but there was some boiling blood when they came back to beat us in the bowl game.

"A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky dangerous animals and you know it." - K

Still can't get over that one. I hate them more than I hate USC or Boise.

You must not have stood through that cold rainy game only for Matt Ryan to ruin our nights in the last 2 minutes....definately a different kind of hate than UVA/Miami for me but I wear my bitterness like a medal nonetheless

Yeah, I don't hate UGA or Harbaugh. Of the traditional power coaches, I like Harbaughand Herman the best.

Yeah Nebraska fans would just say, welp, you guys are good. Great game. I say this from personal experience, they are nice people. I don't think they hate us.

@vtscottyb

This. I have a family friend who is a Nebraska Alum that went to the game. He still says the Hokies are "the classiest fanbase in America."

Went to the Nebraska game in Lincoln, NE. After the game, I thought that nuns, rainbows, and Golden Retriever puppies were going to fall from the sky. Man, those fans are NICE!

Nebraska fans are the Canadians of sports. And I mean that in the nicest way possible. They're awesome.

Having witnessed that game live, I may hate Sean Glennon more than uga - but it's close.

Glennon is such a vocal part of the Hokies fan base now that it's hard to hate him.

Here, let me help. It's the Internet and if people think something is funny, however irrelevant to the current topic of discussion, it's going to get beaten to death and then continued to be beaten.

On a related note, fuck Pat Narduzzi, howbowdah Harambe?

I think this is a niche comment reserved for SevenLayersofPlayers, much akin to "that's so Leonard" by Leonard. the amount of fucks given over Matt Ryan these days is way more than he deserves.

As a Hokie and a Panthers fan, trust me.... No amount of FMR posting is enough FMR

But that's just me

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

I live in Nebraska. Whenever they see my VT stuff they usually just say, "that was a hell of a game you guys played". They have had a tough time catching up to the future though and still think they're a top ten team every year but they've got great knowledgeable nice fans, I usually put them around the same level as our fan base.

UNC? Actually, they hate inclement weather.

I've got to wonder what we did to scorn this fellow so badly that he's been blogging about Tech since the 90s.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

Man, seriously...the 90s. That is hilarious.

Seems like he hasn't had any material in a long time....

Just saying.

Texas fan?

Plan for the worst and hope for the best, not the other way around.

Also marginally relevant what with the XFL 30 for 30 and all:

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

I honestly don't think Arkansas, Notre Dame, or Nebraska hate us.

ND had a down year, Ark (in the grand scheme of things) was a meaningless game, and the Nebraska games were just good games, no ill will.

Fan bases that definitely hate us:

Miami
West Virginia
Virginia
Maryland
Pittsburg

probable:

Tennessee

I dated a girl for a while whose dad went to UMD, and he'd go out of his way to take shots at the Hokies. Then take 40mins to explain why their chem department was better...a bigger blowhard I have rarely met. I'd throw GT onto this list as well, they seem to bear us some ill will

21st century QBs Undefeated vs UVA:
MV7, MV5, LT3, Grant Wells, Braxton Burmeister, Ryan Willis, Josh Jackson, Jerod Evans, Michael Brewer, Tyrod Taylor, Sean Glennon, and Grant Noel. That's right, UVA. You couldn't beat Grant Noel.

Overall, MD fans lack any sort of class.

Oh yeah, forgot about GT.

I logged in just to give you a leg for this.

I thought UNC were the ones lacking class?

UNC lacks school, they have no class.

Ring Design Chair

See but that's just how Maryland fans act in general, I'm not sure that they're giving us any kind of special treatment in that regard. They don't have any real rivals so I guess they just hate everyone?

How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Jet Sweep

When did Miami and Virginia get fan bases?

Don't know if Pitt hates us but you can upgrade Tennessee to a definite hates us.

Paul Johnson probably goes on both lists.

ECU most definitely hates us. I have a couple of friends who are alumni of the butt Pirates and they are second only to WVU in their hatred for the Good Guys.....it has festered for years. I vote no more ECU games.....they cans play the Cousins for 50 years instead of us!

Jeremiah 29:11 and Go Hokies!

They have T-Shirts they sell that says "Beat Tech." I don't know who else on the list has that

-Semper Primus

ECU's like the kid brother who got a few licks in while you were nursing a hammy. Now that you're up to full strength and kick his ass, they cry, complain, and want to continue to "fight you" to prove he's not a wuss.

I've never been to WVU but what I experienced when I went to ECU for a Tech game was exactly what people describe about Morgantown.

A whole bunch of redneck assholes. Exponentially worse than any other fan base I've ever interacted with.

Fuck ECU.

Hokies United l Ut Prosim

Yes and no. In my experience ECU fans are obnoxious with a serious case of little brother syndrome. From the few ECU fans that I know, it's very clear that that game matters way more to them then it does to us. The worst of them probably are rednecks, but not at WVU levels.

How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Jet Sweep

I've been to one game at WVU (2001 - win) and two games at ECU (2013 - win, 2015 - loss). WVU was the worst away experience I've ever had (out of about 50 away games). It was all pregame though because we kicked their ass so bad, their fans all left at halftime and I didn't have to listen to anyone talking smack after the game. My experiences at ECU were perfectly fine. I had a few comments made towards me, but nothing different than basically every other away game I've ever been to.

Kind of a weird list, I don't think we should (or do) hate anyone just because they beat us one time and vice versa. It's a game, one team has to lose, it's needless to get salty about that. I personally don't understand the Matt Ryan hate, but I became a fan pretty much directly after Matt Ryan went to the NFL so maybe you had to be there.

Honestly who do I think we hate?

  • LolVa because LolVa
  • Patt Narduzzi because he's an assclown
  • Miami , WVU because of the trashy fans trolls
  • Paul Johnson because of the chop blocks. Some people dislike GT, I don't agree personally.
  • Hate is a strong word, but I guess people like to make fun of UNC and Duke too

Who hates us? I don't really think about this a whole lot but:

  • LolVa, Miami, WVU - the hate seems to be mutual. Not really sure what their beef is with us, they just suck like that.
  • Heather Dinich, again I've never understood what mama giraffe had against us.
  • Other Virginia schools that aren't us. I guess they confuse us with LolVa sometimes.

How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Jet Sweep

Even though I was around for the Matt Ryan BC years, I actually missed most of that game, so I think I was starting to get over the FMR stuff.

Until he choked a 25 point lead in the Super Bowl.

RE: FMR, you did have to be there. Let me set the scene:

Thursday night in Blacksburg. Steady rain had started earlier in the afternoon and has lasted through tailgate time and most of the game. Temperature at kickoff was around 55F, and dropped slowly throughout the game, with wind gusts up to 25mph. Wind and rain have kept both offenses grounded, for the most part, and neither team has been able to make much progress, resulting in 10-0 in favor of the good guys on the scoreboard with about 7 minutes to play, as the skies finally dry up.

The good guys keep with the running game in an attempt to burn the clock, and are forced to punt. Matt Ryan comes out and promptly throws a pick, seemingly sealing the game with just 6 minutes to play now. But, once again the run game stalls, and the good guys are forced to punt. Bud Foster, knowing that Boston College will now come out throwing, decides to drop more guys into coverage. 9 plays and 92 yards later, Matt Ryan gets Boston College gets on the board, cutting the lead to 10-7 with just over 2 minutes to play. Ok, that's fine, no problem, we just need to recover the onside kick, and even if we don't we should be able to hold them to a field goal to force overtime.

About that... the onside kick attempt bounces off of Josh Morgan straight to a BC player. They recover at their own 34 yard line, which means about 30 yards to get to long field goal range. The defense should be able to hold on.

About that... Matt Ryan proceeds to throw 5 completions on 7 attempts for 76 yards, including the game-winning 24 yard TD to a sliding Andre Callender.

Predictably, the good guys' offense is completely unable to even threaten a score in the last 11 minutes, clinching probably the largest choke job during Frank Beamer's tenure at the school. As you start walking towards the exits, the skies once again open up. The temperature at this point has dropped below 50F, and you had almost dried off from before. By the time you get to your car, you're stuck in a downpour, drenched to your core, and ready to leave this day behind.

Oh, by the way, in 2007 the good guys would go on to finish #3 in the BCS, not very far behind #2 LSU. Losing that game was the difference between another BCSCG appearance and being relegated to the Orange Bowl.

It hurts almost as badly to read it as it did in person

Yeah, eff that guy for only scoring 10 points the entire game and not being able to hold off a late two TD surge by the bad guys.

As to your btw, we had gotten embarrassed by LSU to start off that season. There would have been outrage had we sneaked past them and given how we crapped the bed against Kansas, I'm not sure we would have deserved it. So my ire is much more towards Bryan Stinespring and his worthless offense than Matt Ryan.

Yeah, eff that guy

I enjoyed this part

Yeah, losing that game obviously hurt but I still don't see why we should hate Matt Ryan for winning a football game. For me you have to back that up with off the field antics for me to care.

How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Jet Sweep

psst. I'm not sure if you noticed, but my whole comment was saying that Matt Ryan wasn't at fault for our playing a crappy game. In my book, any time the defense holds a team to 14 points, we should win. Hell, if the other guys score less than 4 TDs, we should win with an offense with even the slightest pulse.

I was backing up your comment... my point is I don't hate anyone just for playing a game regardless of the score.

As a freshman that year, this was the worst walk back to Pritchard I have ever experienced

"Be yourself is about the worst advice you can give some people"

I was a freshman that year and I also sulked back to Pritchard. Thawed out in the shower dejectedly for like 30 minutes.

Try walking back after you lose to Temple, back when Temple was worse than LOLUVA is now

I was at both (and UVA 1998, UGA 2006, JMU 2010, Boise 2010, Cincinnati 2012 ... and pretty much every other terrible loss we've had since 1998). BC is still easily the worst loss I've been to, all things considered.

My buddy and I were the last two people to leave the stadium after that game. We sat speechless and motionless in the east stands for about 30 minutes before my then gf now wife finally left us and then we stayed for another 15 or so minutes... My wife still makes fun of me for how hard I took that loss.

I watched it on TV, and still remember how dejected it felt to go from what felt like a comfortable win late in the third quarter to a choke loss.

Much like what Matt Ryan must have felt on Sunday's Super Bowl loss. We snatched defeat from the jaws of victory.

I think this was one of the times they played Enter Sandman before a big 3rd down on that last drive. Lane went from being just about the loudest I'd ever heard to the quietest I'd ever heard.

Also, the rain almost destroyed my cell phone. I had to take it apart and let it dry out overnight before it worked again.

Can confirm, I had forgotten that this game was the reason I HATED every time we would play Enter Sandman after the opening kickoff.

I can't agree more. Enter Sandman should NEVER be played after the opening kickoff. I got nervous when they played it during the Duke game this year. Brings back all sorts of bad memories.

I used to think like that until this game happened:

"These people are losing their minds"

This game is the reason the bolded word in my above post is in the past tense, though it had started trending that way even before.

2007 BC left me dreading each and every time we'd play Enter Sandman late in the game, but I can't think of another instance where we played it and then got embarrassed, and a number of times when we held on.

Definitely had to be there. We tailgated ALL day Thursday. The last thing I remember was taking a shot of jaeger and grabbing two beers to walk from chicken hill. One of my friends had his ticket torn (I think? I know we were sure that he actually got into the game) but then had a receipt from burger king 20 minutes after kickoff. Another friend fell in the creek trying to get to foxridge. The next thing I remember was the punt out of field goal formation. My recollection is that it was pretty downhill from there. I also recollect FMR.

While LSU stomped us to begin the season, I think they lost a couple on the way out, and the way they scored the BCS at the time, The Good Guys would have been real close to another championship game.

Old sigline: I've been cutting back on the drinking.

New Sigline: lol it's football season.

and then when you come down with bronchitis from screaming the whole game you get to the student health center to find yourself in line with about 50 other students suffering from all sorts of similar symptoms.

Plan for the worst and hope for the best, not the other way around.

I was 12 and my family was to cheap to have cable so I was forced to listen to this game on a radio that was cutting in and out all night. The only thing I could say after they got that field goal was "there's still time left". Pretty sure that's the only tech loss that has ever broken my heart ( other than Danny Coles catch). So I may not hate Matt Ryan, but he'll always get an obligatory Fuck Matt Ryan from me!

He said give to me Roscoe

Yeah, JMU really hates us. I'm not sure whether they are worthy of me caring or not.

JMU, generally, is the school for people who hate VT but couldn't get into UVA.

I don't know if I agree with that.... I feel like the JMU and VT student bodies are pretty similar. But yeah I would definitely agree that they hate VT and I really don't know why, the only thing I can fathom is that they think they are so similar but VT has the big time athletics.

As someone who went to JMU for undergrad...I don't see a lot of similarity, at least in the schools. Student bodies are more similar than, say, Tech's and LOLUVA's. I will say as well that JMU's little brother syndrome rivals ECU's.

Also, That Game was during my freshman year up there....an interesting time for me to say the least

MV7, MV5, LT3, Grant Wells, Braxton Burmeister, Ryan Willis, Josh Jackson, Jerod Evans, Michael Brewer, Tyrod Taylor, Sean Glennon, and Grant Noel. That's right, UVA. You couldn't beat Grant Noel.

Did you find that the majority of the student body didn't have similar feelings of hatred/rivalry towards UVA? That has been my perception of a good amount of people from there. See themselves as more similar to UVA for some reason and have nothing but negativity towards VT.

I must have run with a different crowd, because everybody I knew (except for one guy from northern Albemarle county) hated UVA almost as much as we do

Interesting. Maybe I have just run into a lot of douchebags.

I graduated from tech and currently live In Hburg and they kinda hate us. I don't really care and they always bring up the JMU VT game they beat us in but I'm beyond over that. I walked into a new Mexican restaurant that opened downtown when they were having their natty parade and they were chanting "fuck tech" and I rolled my eyes and just walked out( it was packed didn't feel like dealing with drunk students) they are pretty much an after thought in my head.

Only thing you need to know is that we would have been in the national championship if it wasn't for that last second loss. We would have been the only 1 loss team that year and in the national championship.

So yes and always and forever .... Fuck Matt Ryan

What's
Important
Now

Clemson used to hate us, I can assure you of that, but now that they've been better for awhile it's turned to this annoying haughty thing where they drop back handed compliments and encourage us to get "back" for the good of the ACC. A banner they wave equally annoyingly as SEC fans.

Surprisingly, all the Nebraska fans I've met had glowing things to say about each other's fanbases during our home and homes.

Clemson managers were the best. They always gave us the best swag. and were always nice guys.

What's
Important
Now

Bill Brill used to hate us

I can assure you WVU fans hate us more than any fanbase does in college football. They also hate Pitt and Marshall more than any other fanbase does as well. They are a hateful group that have an inferiority complex unmatched by any program in college football; they just won't admit it. I've waited the last 12 years for us to play them and beat them. I cannot wait for September 2nd.

Marshall University graduate.
Virginia Tech fanatic.
Formerly known as JWillHokieAlum.

Lee Corso and maybe ESPN. Oh and the NCAA tourney selection committee.

Plan for the worst and hope for the best, not the other way around.

Corso hasn't hated us since 2000. He may pick against us occasionally, but then again I would probably pick against us occasionally if I weren't a huge fan of the team.

If you can find it go back and watch the 2004 ass whipping we laid on Maryland. Right before halftime Bryan Randall took a knee in the middle of the field to line up a better field goal attempt when we were up by about 30. Corso spent the second half basically insinuating that Frank Beamer had no class for showing up his buddy Fridge. Seriously, that old man can go piss on an electric fence for all I care.

"I'll put a quote here to distract you from my inane comment."-Me

he also claimed God is a Hokie.

Corso is great, man.

God that was such a great game. I think we ran out of fireworks they were shooting off after every score.

You will see this game, this upset and this sign next on ESPN Sportscenter. Virginia Tech 31 Miami 7

His decision was made after a phone call with longtime Virginia Tech assistant coach Bud Foster. All Foster told him was, "We win. They don't."

We could've sat our 1s the entire game and still won by 3 touchdowns that night. The Terps didn't come to play, and we did.

During the CFB era, Rod Gilmore NEVER had anything nice to say about us, and this was during our 10 win season streak-he was always the cynic. Before him, it was Mike Gottfried in the 90s. However, ESPN has been rather neutral, Herbie was a big pro-VT guy until our mediocre recent seasons, at which point he didn't go negative but preferred to not really say anything. I still he's pro-VT overall.

Herbie wants to like us, but the last few years, every time we'd get to the cusp of being good, we'd shit the bed.

Who else has an unreasonable level of hatred toward the hokies?

Steph Curry.

Yet, I've seen him rooting for the football team on twitter.

-Bill Roth

If the Curry family hates anybody, it's Greenberg. In fact, Dell and Buzz were hanging out a while ago when Dell came back to Blacksburg (can't remember when it was.)

In Sam Rogers we trust.

Good, we're still in play for the grandkids.

If you play it, they will win.

"How the ass pocket will be used, I do not know. Alls I know is, the ass pocket will be used." -The BoD

The keyword there is "unreasonable".

Steph Curry sort of has a point, but I'm guessing he's over it.

JMU, I don't care how the good guys come up in conversation, if there is a JMU alum or student around they automatically have to say 21-16. Just once I'd like a redemption game, where we blow the doors of that school like 77-0 so I can rub it in my girlfriends sister's face!

He said give to me Roscoe

Saw a JMU license plate on the beltway with the score of that game on it. I think some of their fans cling to that win more so than their two FCS national championships.

Bob: What would ya say ya do here?

Brad: I already told you! I iron out the minutiae so Justin doesn't have to. I have people skills dammit! What the hell is wrong with you people?

THIS! Up until a few years ago, I had no idea this hatred even existed. But with the advent of Facebook plus their recent GameDay appearance, I noticed more and more references to their "best win ever" as well as some contempt for VT. I have some good JMU friends who follow college football, and I actually asked on of them:

Me: "Is it me or does there seem to be some animosity from JMU fans directed at VT?"
JMU: "Of course! You know how it is with in-state rivals. Don't you guys feel the same way about us?"
Me: (desperately thinking of something nice to say because from my experience, we just don't really think/talk about JMU.)
Me: Uhhh... hmm. Well, I mean... hmm. We just... we tend to think of UVA and Miami as our big rivals.

I tried to throw in some diplomacy and told him (truthfully) I really liked JMU and wished them the best, but I really walked away stunned that more than a few JMU fans really HATE us.

And re: that 2010 loss to JMU... honestly I don't know what JMU is so happy about. Beating us in Lane is not some impossible feat, and has been achieved by other powerhouses like Temple in 1998, Cincinnati in 1995 (0-16 shutout in the rain, which coincidentally led to a 10-0 VT run), and Miami of Ohio in 1997. I wonder if those 3 teams clinged to their VT upset for +6 years like JMU does.

So relax Dukes... you just won a natty. Act like it. Most of us Hokies want to like you!

Just tell them that everyone loses to a crappy team once in a while.

OP, a few things I agree with and a few I don't:

So, among others, Hokies hate: (my comments in bold)

Matt Ryan - On the contrary, Matt Ryan reminded us "it ain't over til it's over." A lesson that good-guy Beamer sometimes had a hard time remembering. Anyway, we got revenge in the ACCCG and as evidenced by the recent Super Bowl he has yet to recover..
Clemson - To my knowledge they are not UNClass is Optional so not much to hate about Clemson except some of their fans and those door banners they insist on decorating their vehicles with 365 days/year.
Narduzzi - and Pitt in general. - Mental patients deserve sympathy.
Jim Harbaugh - Well, most mental patients deserve sympathy. But he's tight with his ends.
Kansas - A certain OC and his HC, that loss was all on them, Dorothy.
Georgia - Glad I missed that one. Did we win?

And, of course traditional rivals

While I don't normally promote the comments like "fuck Matt Ryan", recent outbursts by others on here caused me to wonder which fanbases are in the hate Virginia Tech camp. Other than the traditional rivalries, I could think of these:

Arkansas - I mean that has to still be stinging right? They are more madder at their coach, but kinda, all the Billy's are hoping he can hang on because they like his wife.

Notre Dame - right when they started to feel a little better about themselves, we reminded them how bad they really were. - I'm hoping that 'were' stays in the present tense, 'are'.

Nebraska - Tyrod broke their heart. Well, sorta, but since we beat them the year before the loss was not a big surprise. Besides Tech was riding Beamer's long streak of many-win seasons and high respectability so the fans I have come across have been somewhat amenable.

These are only a few. Who else has an unreasonable level of hatred toward the hokies?

Who said UVa in this thread? If I were them I'd hate us too. Then take a big swig of Zima.
UNC
Miami fans
Georgia Tech fans
Rutgers' coaches
Auburn/Tennessee fans - Somehow we live up to their expectations of being a lesser species. Have we ever beaten either one in my fairly long lifetime?
UNC again -How can it rain on us and not them they ponder. Life doesn't follow first, second and third rules. It's weird. Don't they teach that in class there?
Mike London - Did he get a watch as a parting gift from UVa?

"The world ain't all sunshine and rainbows. It's a very mean and nasty place and I don't care how tough you are it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. " Rocky B.

ODU
JMU

I think that's about it

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

Why does ODU hate us?

Good call on ODU. They had an illogical amount of animosity toward VT in basketball about ten years ago when they were a solid mid major and we were a perennial bubble team. I believe Greenberg had a bit of a feud with their head coach and I remember some extremely hateful comments on one of their message boards toward VT. We stopped scheduling them, which really ticked them off, and I'm sure they weren't happy when we hired one of their assistants and got Dorian Finney-Smith (his brother played at ODU and they were in contention for him).

It wouldn't surprise me at all if that hate manifested itself again when we start playing them in football.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

Not really on board with this list

Matt Ryan - FMR
Clemson - no hate at all. Love to play them, and love even better to beat them.
Narduzzi - and Pitt in general - The hate is real
Jim Harbaugh - Not a fan, not a bit
Kansas - I hate the fact the team laid a huge egg against them, but I don't hate them
Georgia - I don't like them, but I certainly don't hate them
Arkansas - Don't hate them
Notre Dame - Don't like them, but there's no hate in my heart for them. Always fun to play and beat a traditional power
Nebraska - don't hate them in the slightest, and I doubt they hate us.

Does Boston College or Georgia Tech hate us, or are they're fan-bases too pathetic too care?

VT hates Harbaugh? I love Harbaugh! In a world with Saban it's nice to have some entertainment

I can't get over that OB. Most overpowered we've been in a game since like LSU.

Can't hate on Harbaugh though. Turning Stanford into the program it is now is so stupidly impressive. Antics and all.

I put that OB on us, not Harbaugh.

And his exchange with Tyrod was classic. Jimbo is okay in my book. And he brought Man Ball to Stanford. I love Man Ball.

The guy almost got Toby Gerhart a Heisman. That's the most impressive.

I don't think Arkansas hates us. One game doesn't create hatred unless it was an ugly game. I think they hate themselves more than they hate us.

Also, Harbaugh? If y'all hate Harbaugh for what he did to us in Miami you need to get the hell over it. We just got out coached.

I have no idea why my username is VT_Warthog.

Arkansas blew a 24-0 lead in the Belk Bowl.

I don't get all the "Fuck Narduzzi" stuff. First of all, we won. Secondly, he showed the whole country what a whiny bitch he is. Every neutral person watching that game came away thinking he's an absolute douche. He tanked is reputation that night. He didn't wrong us. I don't have hate for anyone that pathetic.

To me, it's the post-game comment about us pushing off.

After his guys interfered on every play.

Makes sense. I just found it hilarious

I don't hate Clemson at all. I would love to play them every year.

I just sit on my couch and b*tch. - HokieChemE2016

I'd take Tennessee and Notre Dame off the list. I'd take anyone we haven't played in 5 years off the list, unless they were regular foes (like WVU). Kansas and Georgia? They have so many other teams to hate ahead of VT. Clemson? Seems they've had a pretty good run over VT in recent memory. They'd have hated VT if we had spoiled their National Championship bid this year, but that didn't happen.

You don't really hate a team over one loss. One loss is on you. It's the teams you have to play often that either a) beat you consistently, or b) beat you when the game is important to the season, or c) beat you and lose to other less-than-average teams that you learn to really hate.

So from that perspective, I'd say that UVa has an exceptional case to hate VT. Miami, Pitt, and anyone else in the ACC Coastal have pretty good cases to dislike VT. WVU has a decent case to dislike VT because there was a pretty good rivalry there for a while when either or both teams were pretty good.

My hatred for Clemson diminished quite a bit over the last few years, even though they've had our number recently. Not a fan of Dabo really, but don't hate him either. I like this rivalry - if they do consider it a rivalry too - more than anything.

Fuck FSU though. Especially the Bowden years.

EDIT: That 2005 ACCCG game loss stung a lot more than our 2005 loss to Miami that year. We should've beaten FSU easily but crapped the bed.

Honestly, I've liked Clemson since the last time we played them in Blacksburg (even though we got thoroughly beaten). I was downtown after the game, ran into a group of like 15 Clemson alums who had made the trip, and ended up talking with them for about an hour. They were, hands down, some of the nicest people I've ever met - super complimentary about the town/campus/overall setting, brought up over and over again how awesome our fans had been to them (apparently half of them had been randomly adopted by a VT fan tailgate before the game when they were exploring campus), and had some really insightful comments on the game that made them seem like true fans of the sport (giving both positive and negative criticism to both teams).

I've kept in touch with a number of them since then (some of them live near me), and the overall feeling I get from them is that they'd love for our teams to play each other more, especially because (at least, in the eyes of this group of friends) they felt like our on campus and gameday atmospheres are really similar - both set in small college towns, competitive, loud, and filled with people (excluding the asshole fans that every team has a few of) who will cheer all out for their team during the game but won't hesitate to do whatever they can for opposing fans and visitors to show them a good time. All of that, coupled with the fact that we're on track to be consistently better and to be able to compete with them, have us really excited to play again this year and hopefully more in years to come. I'd also just rather play Clemson over BC every year.

I personally hate Harbaugh for that Orange Bowl. Not because he kicked our ass, it happens, and sometimes you just can't help scoring when the other team doesn't have their shit together. What pissed me off about that game was that up 50 in the 4th quarter he was having his offense perform about 3 or 4 formation shifts before every snap, just to rub the game in on Bud. That was a bush league shithead move.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

So you hate Harbaugh for not going easy on us?

In order to instill the value of playing all 4 quarters, you have to coach all 4 quarters too. It sucked, but I don't blame him.

When the game is a 40+ lead with 5 minutes to go in the 4th quarter, running 3 line shifts before the snap is a shithead move. This is the same coach who wanted to punch Frank because Beamer corrected him before the game when he kept calling us GT.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

Oh, the second part is definitely hateworthy

Calling us GT is awful

I'm starting to think Harbaugh has some sort of personality disorder. From all the weird antics, to the odd anecdotes we hear about him, I think there's a strong possibility that he's half nuts.

I think it's closer to three quarters...

Yes to this. The formations changes with Stanford was painful. The TV zoomed in on Bud. Never seen him so angry. I looked for the video, but Bud probably found it and murdered it.

"This is the same coach who wanted to punch Frank because Beamer corrected him before the game when he kept calling us GT."

Your hatred is skewing reality. From the link below:

"After we take some pictures, we start talking, just the two of us," Beamer said. "Jim says over and over how much respect he has for Georgia Tech. He must have said it five times. I'm just looking at him like, 'Are you serious?' Finally, I'm joking with him and I say I can't wait to tell my team that you called us Georgia Tech. Because, you know, we're Virginia Tech."

As described by sports writer Lars Anderson, Harbaugh's jaw dropped agape. Then he mustered a response that only Harbaugh could.

"Well," Harbaugh reportedly said. "I can't wait to tell my players that you said you were going to play Samford, not Stanford!"

With that, Harbaugh turned and walked away, per the report."

At no point did Harbaugh express the desire to punch Frank Beamer. Hate the man for what he has done, not imaginary things.

.

WVU fans (first and foremost) and Bill Brill are the only sports related entities I can think of that ever harbored feelings toward VT approaching the word hate.

ECU... maybe, but it's more of a little-man's complex than hate. What they really hate is the fact that they are small potatoes, they don't really hate VT.

WVU fans..? That seems more like hate.

I think WVU fans hate everyone.

I'm pretty sure they hate couches that aren't on fire.

I'm a little surprised no-one has brought up Memphis..we just stole their Ace coach. That would leave me a little salty, if I were them.

Onward and upward

Solid point, but I can't imagine any of their fans expected him to stick around Conf USA/American for much longer than he did

The fact that their new coach led them to a 8-5 season after losing Lynch and signed the #2 class in the AAC I'd say they're not that mad anymore. Hell, they'd have the #1 class if UCF didn't flip that 4* running back last week.

Edit: So I actually just looked through their class, and they signed two longsnappers. Just, why?

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

for the most part, VCU fans respect Shaka despite him bolting to Texas, ya know, because....way better opportunity

In my experience Miami fans don't like VT.

WVU fans for sure.
Haven't met any others honestly.

Sugar Bowl

I don't even hate Michigan over that. That was all on the refs.

I hate the football off-season.
Certainly feels like it hates me back.

Other hates, Paul Johnson, WVU fans, LOLUVA students and alumni, anybody who believes Miami is back, and officials who call a game badly against us - (USC pass interference, Sun Bowl no penalty for the helmet shot that took Logan out, Danny Coale's catch all come to mind.)

I am fairly sure all of those hate VT.

Sometimes we live no particular way but our own

the common theme in the officials is that the first two occurred against Pac-12 teams and the final one was by Pac-12 refs. see the common link? I live in Pac-12 country and it seems like most people don't know or don't care about VT, but I'll go with you on this one (they definitely DON'T like Pac-12 refs, though).

LOLUVA will really hate us when we embarrass their pride and joy on Sunday in Cassell.

EDIT: I get to claim this, right? I totally called the upset!!

I've noticed a LOT of anger and bitterness towards us - both academically and athletically from NC State fans. I lived in W-S for four years while in grad school and I was surprised at how much they detested us. Really had to laugh at NC state calling us rednecks. They were far more insufferable than Tarheels or Dookies.

I am always annoyed when Hokies talk about NC state like they are "one of us" they are not. Eff them, their crappy sports, ugly campus and moronic alums.

My, my name is Alum07, I live in Raleigh, and I support this message.

But then again, NCSU fans hate everyone and treat everyone equally. And by that, I mean they act like shitbags towards everyone.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

That was my impression of NC State'rs as well. They seemed to think they were better than everybody else. It was interesting going to State for the game where we crushed them in the second half before going on to win back in 2010.

Yeah... I was at a bar down the street from Carter-Finley that day after tailgating in their lots. I've been to every venue in NC when Tech has played, and I've never heard the kind of vulgarity (ex: "Your mother should have aborted you you f*g Hokie f*t", "Not enough of you were thinned out in 2007") directed at me in those lots that day. My friends from NCSU who were with me thought it was hilarious and just said "that's why you don't wear opponent's colors here". Mind you, I've never had any other fanbase say anything to me in this state.... so yeah.... And its not like I did a damn thing to instigate, I'm from this area, I just kept my head down and moved along, embarrassed these people live in my hometown.

Anyway, get to the bar, and this table of State fans next to us is talking endless amounts of shit throughout that first half. The chest puffing was at an all time high that day. And then the second half happened, and the place was a ghost town by the 5 minute mark of the 4th.

And from what I understand, it wasn't much better in the stadium. A friend in this area got tickets, and from what I understand a State fan had to be held back from getting in a fistfight with his now-wife for having the audacity to cheer for VT.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

wow. Had any of those comments been directed at me there would've been a 0% chance of a reasonable outcome on my part.

That kind of shit is unacceptable.

I could've handled the "your mother should've had an abortion" but if you talk shit about the shooting, you're going to get the reaction you were looking for

You're a better man than I. Pretty sure my story would have ended with me in jail for assault. You just don't joke about that shit. Period.

If you play it, they will win.

"How the ass pocket will be used, I do not know. Alls I know is, the ass pocket will be used." -The BoD

Yeah - it definitely incensed me, and lets just say the reaction from the friends I was with led to them not necessarily being friends with me anymore after that.

Last year for the Friday night game in Lane, we got together at the Alumni bar, and we had a State fan park himself right in the middle of our section that we have reserved for every game, that we worked with the bar to reserve. The waitresses couldn't kick him out, and were legitimately pissed he was there, a single at the largest table in the middle of the room ordering a beer every hour or so. He was just there to inconvenience us. I believe he stayed til the end of the game, and while he wasn't in your face obnoxious, he knew damn well what he was doing, and the smug look on his face every time the wait staff came to suggest he move elsewhere just made you want to deck the guy.

NC State fans really are that bad.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

I was at the ACC Tourney in Greensboro a few years back and had some obnoxious NC State fans sitting beside us. Some lady with a thick southern accent (nothing wrong with that, just this lady was irritating) yelling every few seconds, "NAHW COME OWHN, PAAIICK!" After they lost, we kept imitating her the next few games and had other teams' fans rolling in laughter.

Also actually ran into two incredibly nice UVA fans. Conversation came up that I was a Tech grad and my group was all from VA, were super friendly. We were walking to the arena the next day and a car pulls up and yells, "Hey Hokies, get in!" It was those dudes, gave us a ride to the stadium and we drank some beers with them. I guess they're not all that bad. Also saw the prototypical frat bro UVA fan at the bar there. He tried to talk to us after learning we were from VA, but there was nothing to be discussed.

I miss the tournament being down in Greensboro. A fun opportunity to see all of the ACC teams' fans in one spot.

The ACC tournament is a magical place. I'm sad it was only in DC for one season. I had a great time with the Georgia Tech fans near me.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

Oh those Greensboro games are awesome. I loved it when we had the last game in the first couple rounds. By then, it didn't matter where your ticket was, everyone cleared out and you basically got to choose your seat for the game. Once I got to sit about 5 rows up from the Tech bench, and the other time I got 2nd row at midcourt.

Shame what's going on right now, and that the next opportunity to attend might be mid-2020s.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

Lol, we actually tried to move down to a different section for one game. Totally empty when we got there. Pretty soon, we were surrounded by tons of Wake Forest fans, many in suits and likely administration of some sort at the school. Had accidentally sat in some sort of Wake club section. Really awkward being the only three guys with Tech stuff on and street clothes. Oddly enough, no one asked us to leave or said anything.

LOL I think we're talking about the same game. I remember I was in the middle of the Wake area as well, and same thing, nobody said a word. The guy I went with got his tickets from some Wake boosters, but they weren't the tickets we were sitting in, that's for sure.

That's hilarious. Seriously miss the tournament being down there. So many great stories. Ham's down on High Point Rd was the place to be before and after the games. I remember one night we were sitting there and I had my VT hat on, I hear a lady behind us say, "Let's go!" We responded with the obligatory "Hokies!" Come to find out she was Jaymes Brooks', one of our offensive linemen from 07-11, mother. Had a nice conversation with them. Many a beer tower consumed there that week.

our section that we have reserved

if you had the section reserved, why couldn't the wait staff kick him out? Doesn't make sense to me

Onward and upward

It was an 8pm game, so they still had to deal with the dinner rush. They made a point of telling everyone that they had to clear out before the game because the area was reserved. Well, this guy shows up before they have any of the signs up and just squats for the whole night. They couldn't forcibly remove him from the premises because he wasn't making a scene, but he was just being a general dick for the sake of it. It pissed off everyone who was working that night, and I'm not sure I've seen him back since.

1 guy versus regular group who reserved the table... If I was the staff, I would have cut him off after 1 beer and just not served him anything else. Then say you need the table for paying customers.

Or just have the big party of Hokies join him at the table and start ordering. You're welcome to stay if you want but we're joining you and we're going to talk around you if you don't move.

My fighting days are long gone, but if I hear anyone say anything negative about that day they're either going to apologize or there's going to be an altercation. It may not end well for me, but they'll know they had a lapse of judgement. It's not a threat or me trying to be some kinda hero, I just have absolutely zero tolerance for that. Zero.

Go for the knees and screw fighting fair

You should avoid playing Cards Against Humanity.

We destroyed that card in our personal deck. All of our friends (all from different schools) removed it as well. If we're playing with an uncorrected deck for whatever reason, I inevitably draw it and just tuck it under my black cards until the end of the game.

A decade on TKP and it's been time well spent.

My friends have been kind enough to remove that card from their decks.

Mine have too, but I've only ever played with Hokies.

My Brother In Law played that one on me during my bachelor's party... Yes, he went to NCSU now that you mention it... Family was the only reason I didn't go off on him that day

He has since learned that wasn't a good idea

I bought my deck about a year ago and I'm somewhat pleased to report that the card in question no longer exists.

I say "somewhat pleased" because they replaced it with something to the effect of "this year's mass shooting"

It all comes from basketball, they have spent last 30 years living off of an unlikely tournament run that resulted in a National Championship and can't deal with the fact that they are generally irrelevant in basketball while 2 of the modern powerhouses are within 25 miles of their campus. As a result they have a massive inferiority complex which results in self-loathing so severe it covers every sport and everyone else they come in contact with.

As an NC resident, I believe you hit the nail on the head on this one. They have a kind of massive little brother being a $hit to get attention syndrome problem. They are the only D1 school in the state that gets no love from non Alumni, and want so bad to have bragging rights on something. They have a slightly more educated version of Cousins syndrome. I don't think they particularly hate us, at least not compared to UNCheat or Duke, they just lack class.

What about Wake?

Winston-Salem is not a large town, but most people moving in from out of town at least root for WF as their secondary team. I know they don't have huge crowds, but the school is smaller than many high schools - most of the people there are local fans, not alumni. Tix are plentiful enough and cheap enough its a fun day/night out locally. I did forget about UNC Charlotte though. No local love there - due to pros teams.

Wake is everyone's second favorite team save NC State alums.

I'm very happy to hear other Hokies can't sand NC State. I thought I was alone.

Heck, everybody roots for the underdog. You don't get much more underdog than Wake Forest. That said, nice school, great academics, and they try their best.

I've noticed they try and redirect their self loathing inferiority complex on us.

I don't get it.

Well, I'm convinced. I used to not mind NC State and I thought to an extent they were "one of us" but all of the comments above about their fans has made me hate them despite never personally having a bad experience with an NC State fan.

I went to law school in NC and I got along with the NCSU alums well enough. Really only one of them liked sports and he was a nice guy about it. Out of all of my classmates the Carolina alums were the worst. Surprisingly, the Duke alums were really nice (pretty different from all of the Duke fans I know back home in VA).

Georgia Tech fans are borderline WVU fans. I can't stand them. They like rubbing their wins in our faces. Add in Paul Johnson. And that damn T!

Having lived in RVA for the past several years, I've met several random people from VCU who dislike VT a lot and have been extremely vocal to me about it. I cannot figure it out unless they applied and didn't get in. The conversation usually ends with me saying, "Hate VT all you want but at least those of us that went there decided to do better than go the local Richmond community college." That one REALLY pisses them off. Same goes for George Mason students. I don't actually consider either of those schools to be community colleges, but I heard that zing somewhere along the way and it definitely angers the students of both.

You will see this game, this upset and this sign next on ESPN Sportscenter. Virginia Tech 31 Miami 7

His decision was made after a phone call with longtime Virginia Tech assistant coach Bud Foster. All Foster told him was, "We win. They don't."

The fuck did we do to VCU?

I take back those times I cheered for them in the tourney.

If you play it, they will win.

"How the ass pocket will be used, I do not know. Alls I know is, the ass pocket will be used." -The BoD

As someone who went to Tech and now goes to George Mason, I totally agree about the "community college" insecurity. I probably wouldn't say that to a student here but when people talk about GMU as a commuter school its sure to make them go off on a hissy fit. Interestingly enough, I have found that I see more VT paraphernalia on campus than any other school(besides GMU). I have liked GMU so far since its more middle class and down to earth people. I find that a lot of the people here never looked at Tech as an option since they wanted to stay close to home in NOVA and therefore have no animosity towards VT, but every University is a mixed bag.

I haven't had any experience like this with the VCU people I know. Most of my good friends in RVA are VCU grads and have said that they would see almost as much VT swag worn around campus back in the day as VCU (pre-final 4 run).

Personally, I hated them for a while after they got in the tourney over us in 2011. They then went on to the Final 4 and we lost in the second round of the NIT, but I still hated them for that. I've gotten over it at this point mainly because games in Siegel are pretty fun.

ACC officials

We put the K in Kwality

that's just incompetence.

I'm not sure on who hates VT but I hate Kellen Moore and all things Boise. If we beat Matt Ryan we just get blasted by whoever we play for the C'ship. If we beat Boise it eliminates the JMU hangover and if we still run the table(decent odds) we have a legit shot against Auburn or Oregon.......just saying. The Boise loss still stings to me......FKM....lol

I went to see the Skins/Ravens preseason game a couple years back at M&T and the following satisfying things happened:
1. Joe Flacco's pass was intercepted by D-Hall on the first drive
2. Matt Schaub got sacked mercilessly
3. Kellen Moore didn't do any better

Loved Dan Hawkins and late night WAC football in high school, became a Boise State Fan, loved the Oklahoma win, but couldn't stand having to play them. That loss wasn't on Kellen Moore though. Tyrod had a hell of a game, Heisman level game, and our offense got bottled up at the goal line at the end of the 4th. Instead of a game sealing TD, we settle for a field goal, and Bud's D was gassed for that last drive. Washington Post's Mark Giannotto even wrote an article about that field goal costing us the game. Probably the first I saw a reporter have the Nutts to call for the offensive coaches publicly.

Kellen Moore and that Boise St team won a lot. A lot. They hammered Georgia in the Georgia dome the following year. They only lost 4 games in 4 years. And they always talked about modeling their program after ours. A lot of respect for Frank Beamer.

1.) If we don't spot Boise 17 in the first quarter, then the last two drives of the game don't matter.

2.) My challenge to Boise at that time was to actually play one of those good teams midseason. All of their big games were either week 1 or bowl games, with extra prep time.
