White for ODU follows our tradition of it being early in the season, usually against a OOC opponent
Maroon makes a lot of sense for Clemson, as it is lined up to a be primetime game (AME, I hope)
Orange for UNC -- 125th anniversary of the first Virginia Tech football game played. Maybe we'll see something special?
I'm sure we'll see shirt designs sooner rather than later

For as long as I can remember, the early one between maroon and orange is always short sleeved and the late one is always long sleeved. And according to my maroon-and-orange-t-shirt drawer in my dresser the last time I organized it, they alternated which color was early every year from at least 2006 through last year. Anybody remember whether orange was the short sleeve last year?
Maroon is going to be short sleeve, whichever game happens first gets the short sleeve shirt. And yes the orange shirt was short sleeve last year.
That ODU game could potentially be against a ranked team, especially with UNC losing so much talent this year.

Penn State does White Out. Penn State does "We Are...Penn State". We are not Penn State (and don't want to be), so it'd be nice if we stopped with this nonsense.
I half agree with you and half don't. I don't want to be like PSU either. But the white-effect games at least went to a good cause. As long as proceeds continue going to Herma's Readers (or something similar) I'm okay with them. I'm also fine with them being against ho-hum opponents for noon games. Penn State does theirs for the biggest night game of the year every season. That is a different animal. That is our Orange/Maroon Effect equivalent. As long as we don't try to do White Out the way PSU does it, and we keep putting the proceeds for the shirt sales towards something commendable I'm okay with keeping it around in it's current form; ho-hum opponent during an early September noon game.
I will always support any opportunity to rock all white uniforms. All white is one of, if not the best, look for most teams.
But why White? I agree with the cause, but there are other colors that better represent VT such as black and grey.
Because in most of our uniform combos, we either wear white jerseys or white pants. So, if need be, the White Out* uniform can be mixed and matched with existing uniform parts.
Also, if the all white game is being scheduled for early to mid September, in a game that you're 99.9% sure is going to be played during the afternoon, lighter colors are preferable.

My problem is we stopped supporting Herma's Readers with the white out. Now it is a white out to be a white out. Would rather just have it be a normal game.
Usually this game is now associated with the military appreciation game, so proceeds (I believe) go to a military foundation. Marshall, ECU, and BC all had military/patriotic themed white shirts.
Fine, military effect, camo effect, blue effect (for the corp), cow effect, I don't really care, just don't overlap with some other schools' iconic tradition.
I don't like ECU, but pirate effect was a cool idea
