Virginia Tech athletic director Whit Babcock's new contract bumps his base salary by more than 22 percent and his annual retention bonus by more than 64 percent. The deal adds $100,000 in yearly deferred income.
In short, Babcock will make a minimum of $996,750 in 2017, with routine bonuses for team performance almost certain to take him beyond $1 million.
As Teel says this new salary isn't the biggest in the ACC and definitely not the biggest in P5 but it's a great step in keeping Whit in Blacksburg. The numbers that surprised me were Duke playing so much and LOLUVA and Clemson paying so little.

LOLUVa's AD started as an interim when Terry Holland left. He was also a long time employee of the athletic department. I'd imagine that would handicap your negotiating a good bit, as opposed to someone who was trying to be convinced to leave another school. As the recruiters always say, it's better to negotiate a higher starting salary than to try to make up ground with raises...
And here I am waiting for July to get the 3% raise for state employees
There is a little bit of me saying the same thing. 22% is a heck of a bump for doing his job well. I would rather see him get incentive bonuses for his hires doing well than an increase in base salary.
This isn't really a merit increase like most of us get. It's largely about retention of someone who is at the top of his profession and certainly has many other suitors for his services - something many of us can't claim.
Exactly, don't confuse merit/COLA raises with retention compensation. Its also why positions like these are negotiated as contracts with very specific stipulations.
Based on what I've seen...he deserves more!
He's worth every penny, if not more.
He's been great, and I'd like him to stick around.
