2017 Spring Practice Number 7 Snapchat Review

The Snapchat opens with warm up and drill work. Wyatt Teller and Eric Gallo are doing footwork drills. This highlights an issue I have with Vance Vice and most college offensive line coaches. This technique (butt down, good center of balance, short quick choppy steps) is fine for improving pass pro fundmentals. But, they are moving forward, which means this is a run blocking drill. Zone blocking coaches want the OL to stay engaged and move the defender laterally, so balance and being athletic enough to stay engaged is more valued than drive blocking. However, when VT's interior OL struggled, it was often Eric Gallo displaying poor pad level and being driven into his own backfield. To me, this drill reinforces bad pad level with the displayed technique.

It wasn't a good practice start for Devine Deablo. The young safety got caught guessing on a footwork drill, and then Cam Phillips breaks his ankles in a tackling drill where, you guessed it, Deablo guessed on Phillips path. Phillips looks primed for a huge season. He is blocking well, making plays in the passing game, and doesn't appear to have lost speed with his added mass.

Wyatt Teller had a beautiful rep to stonewall Ricky Walker in pass protection.

Eric Kumah got into Facyson's cushion and drove back to the ball on an outside hitch. Kumah impresses me with his ability to sell the route and work back to the ball on a cut. I don't see him as a vertical threat yet, but he looks like he can be a solid possession receiver.

If any eyes are not deceiving me, Kyle Chung is again working at first team right guard. Braxton Pfaff was with the 2 offensive line.

Both Jackson and Bush were working with the ones and the twos, along with Wheatley and Peoples working with both groups. Keene seems to be settled in behind Cunningham as the second Hback at this point as he learns. It was difficult to get much out of this work except that the offense got some seams for the running game.

I can't figure out who the #2 left tackle is. It looks like he is wearing #71 and could be Moore or Jackson. But, #71 isn't listed. Help my eyes folks!

Interesting to hear Wheatley already getting reps with the 1s and 2s. Is McClease back from the injury yet?

I have not seen him in clips. VTScoop reported at the beginning of the spring that he is only doing non-contact work this spring.

and then Cam Phillips breaks his ankles

He's not the only one.

Cam has literally broken players' ankles

I really don't have the time to sift through the whole Miami game (I think it was Miami) but a guy pursuing Cam did actually break the lower part of his leg making a cut to try keeping up. You could see it on TV. If I find the footage I'll show you.

but have a leg for the Princess Bride reference anyway

I forgot how painful that looked.

That was Rayshawn Jenkins, he didn't miss any games. Just rolled his ankle.

...anyone else hear his name in the Leroy Jenkins voice?

Anyone got any details (actual injury, prognosis etc) on Henri Murphy? I know he was carted off, and that's about it.

Depending on what's going on, that one could really sting. He was such a great breath of fresh air last season & seemed primed for more work moving forward...

the numbers don’t lie and they spell disaster

I have not heard anything, but any time I hear about a knee injury and they don't announce the severity immediately, I think ACL. In order to do an MRI, they have to let the swelling go down first, hence the typical delay we get between the reported injury and the actual announcement. I sure hope I am wrong. The kid can play (and as someone who deals with the residual effect of a major ligament injury every single day, I wouldn't want it for anyone.)

Same here, with a shoulder. There are days I can't wash my face with both hands. Jumps up and bites you.

I hope that he's not still swollen up - that'd be a bad sign. I figured (hoped) that it's just been a few days and that this was more tight-lipped CJF&Co.

Kid can really play. Here's hoping.

the numbers don’t lie and they spell disaster

they may just be keeping quiet about it. I've noticed Fuente is very tight lipped when it comes to injuries. Any details are through unofficial channels. If it is an ACL he will show up on the WVU injury report as "Out for Season - Lower Extremity"

Phillips is adding mass? That's a good sign as long as he doesn't end up like this

Here lies It's a Stroman Jersey I Swear, surpassed in life by no one because he intercepted it.

Nope. He is ripped.

Bro, when you tack on mass you sacrifice flexibility. That is just a straight-up fact.

Hokiesports lists TJ as #56, but he was #71. And that is a #71 jersey in the clips.
