1) Caleb Farley, with 3 practices, was still getting more separation than any other receiver. Keep in mind, Farley started the game over Phil Patterson, who replaced Cam Phillips after one series.
Dalton Keene worked with the 2 group almost exclusively, but he is a very mobile strong blocker who is a bit tentative, which isn't shocking given his experience level. He looks like a better hand catcher than I expected. Route running is a work in progress.
2) Hooker looked terrific against back up corners, Ladler, and walk on's at free safety and whip. I thought his ability to climb the pocket against a rush was surprisingly good for a young player. He also looked right and froze the free safety, allowing Keene to slip behind him for a touchdown. Jackson and Bush didn't get many opportunities to challenge VT's veteran corners, although Jackson was throwing the ball when Farley drew a couple of PIs. I really think the competition will come down to consistency and who fits the surrounding talent the best.
3) The right side of the offensive line looked serviceable. They weren't knocking guys around in the run game, but outside of one play where Tim Settle came through looking unblocked, they did the job. Pfaff and Smith did a good job of picking up stunts. Teller and Nijman were very solid from eyes view.
4) Emanuel Belmar and Dee Fullwood had some moments on the second defensive line group, but for the most part depth up front is a concern. Burke, Minor, Belmar, and Taylor are all fighting to be the 3rd (if Gaines doesn't return) or 4th DE. Xavier Burke looks like a guy who can come in and steal some reps without being a liability at the point of attack, but from eyes view, I expect Zion Debose to be in the DE rotation. I will talk more about that via film review in the coming weeks.
5)Depth is less of a concern at linebacker, where Tavante Beckett and Anthony Shegog looked like they were in the right place and put guys on the ground. Shegog is an interesting case. He is a senior and is a tweener- he moves to the spot great but gets eaten up by blockers when they can get a body on him. He is also behind Tremaine Edmunds. Listening to Bud Foster on the radio after the scrimmage ended, it sounds like Deon Newsome will be competing with Mook Reynolds at whip, and Bud talked openly about Shegog being a bandit linebacker, but Newsome being a guy he trusts more in man coverage at that bandit spot. I focused very little on Newsome today, so I don't have a feel for that battle.
There was a bust in coverage on a McMillian catch, where both the corner (Alexander) and the rover (Floyd) bit on the slant route from the X. McMillian slipped out from the slot and was wide open in the flat. That was the one moment where I imagine Bud Foster blew his stack. Either his veteran corner or his communicator on that side at rover blew an assignment.
Again, those are some random thoughts. I have some more detailed notes, and will put those together with whatever film we can piece together for a more detailed review. Be sure to tune in, and if you haven't joined The Key Players Club, please do as we will be having TKPC content looking at scheme, position battles, and West Virginia through the summer months.

French what was your biggest surprise of the day?
Not French but the obvious talent that Fuente and staff brought in with their 1st true recruiting class - Farley, Pimp, Hooker, Keene (in that order, because bro's before.../s).
They are building something very special in Blacksburg. Buckle up!
I agree. I'm really starting to appreciate Fuente & Co's ability to identify and evaluate talent at a high level. All of these freshmen EEs (Hooker, Pimp, Farley, Keene in particular who played well today) look like they will contribute very early on and make a big impact. They definitely can notice a skillset and project how it fits perfectly into what they want to do.
We should be very excited. This class has a ton of playmakers that will help us immediately.
I bet that's a thing French will write about in his aforementioned review.
Sounds like something I wouldn't want to miss, I'm glad I joined the Key Players Club so I won't miss any content.
I read this with a cheesy infomercial voice in my head.
It'll be a crime if Caleb Farley doesn't play WR.
His HS film was incredible but watching him live, wow! He will be a force for years to come, kid can ball and scoot.
I'll just echo what some others have said, Farley was incredibly impressive at WR. I didn't really follow who he was going up against, but the contested balls he came down with were really something to see.
Looked like Facyson was defending him a lot, which is impressive.

JOIN TKPC, FAM!
Thanks for the teaser! Im sure everyone else like me who couldnt go to the game and has been dying to hear anything concrete about development this spring feels some sense of optimism with this small glimpse.
Cant wait for your next thoughts, and thanks as always for what you do!
After having time to digest what I saw yesterday, I have to say as a unit, I am very happy with our QBs. You could make a legitimate argument for any of the top three starting this fall. Hooker absolutely cemented his place in the battle yesterday, and as French mentioned, him freezing the safety and stepping up in the pocket to find Keene open up the seam for a TD was a veteran move. His work came against pretty much all backups yesterday, but you have to be excited by what you saw. I am feeling really good about the QB position right now.
The running game has to be more consistent. We need to continue to find the best combination on the OL to generate a good push up front. McMillian didn't play much, but Peoples and Reid looked really solid. Wheatley also showed some flashes yesterday. I am excited about Reid hopefully taking that next step and contributing as a power runner for us. He punched one in on the goal line against the 1st team D yesterday (albeit, it took a few tries). Didn't get to see McClease, and we still have Holston coming this summer. Lots to be sorted out to improve our run game going forward.
Our biggest questions offensively, QB and WR, were answered to a great extent yesterday. I am feeling way more optimistic about this being a very effective offense next year. A lot of youth, but some great talent proving they can play early. A lot to feel good about as we head into the summer.
My question is who would be our best QB for Clemson [game 5]. WVU should be a tough game but after that are 3 that we should be prohibitive favorites. With four games experience would Hooker be our best QB going forward.
Run blocking is going to be a weakness again unless Osterloh brings something major to the table to solidify the right side. That being said, it looks like we may have the ability to stretch the field more than in the past offensively.
Center...
Agreed. It seems like Gallo has pretty much plateaued, so I'm not sure how much improvement we will see at center this year. I think he was absolutely blown up by the defense a few times yesterday.
Agreed. Can improved guard play combined with play calling help mask the weakness at Center?
And now with a preview of the Hokies' 2017 season, here's weatherman Ollie Williams...
Thanks, Ollie.
I love watching the post game pressers with the players. You can learn a lot by how these kids present and communicate. One thing really stood out. Hooker is a smooth operator.
I encourage you all to go watch it on hokiesports.com. If you didn't know class rank you'd think he was a senior. In fact one the reporters asked how he was so prepared for the interview. I don't think it registered with him that they were asking because they were so impressed with his composure and ability to articulate his thoughts. I don't know if he'll start, but from what I gathered in the interview it's not just his play that's making a case. Regardless I think we got a good one.
Little off topic but at the autograph session, Kalil Pimpleton was easily the most friendly person I've ever met in my life. Seems like the kind of guy that's everybody's best friend.
sure he seems nice at first, but just wait til Hooker isn't performing up to expectations and then see how nice he is. /s
