QB competition got to him.

According to multiple posters on vtscoop, he's re-opening his recruitment as an athlete, so it would appear to not have anything to do with QB competition.

Yeah. His tweet even says as much.

"...When we step on that field, they bleed like we bleed and we're gonna show the world."
-Corey Marshall

Dayummm he started this draft Monday the 24th.

"Now Miami wants to talk about it." *Cue Enter Sandman*

It's a smart move on his part. He realizes that he will generate a ton more interest being recruited as an "athlete" instead of a QB. Hope we can stick with him like we stuck with Garbutt.

In Sam Rogers we trust.

Definitely. With his speed alone he is going to get a lot of interest. Best of luck to him and hope he's a Hokie in the end.

100% battery? Gotta respect his life choices.

At 2:10pm....what a boss

I'm sure a lot of us probably called this a while back. Hope he recommits or finds a spot that will fit him well elsewhere.

I will not get emotionally involved in recruiting this year. I will not get emotionally involved in recruiting this year. I will not get emotionally involved in recruiting this year. I will not get emotionally involved in recruiting this year. I will not get emotionally involved in recruiting this year. I will not get emotionally involved in recruiting this year. I will not get emotionally involved in recruiting this year. I will not get emotionally involved in recruiting this year. I will not get emotionally involved in recruiting this year.

It's the weirdest thing. I actually have detached myself. Not even purposely mind you. Since graduating and having a full plate on my schedule, I really couldn't care less about recruiting. Which is odd because I used to be so into it. But now, I'm like meh, it will sort itself out. I kinda like it honestly.

Agreed. I cant follow it anymore.

I'll save you the trouble, here is the narrative come signing day, I dont even have to know what our recruiting ranking is:

Itll be bad.
"Oh great we landed these awesome players, but...we didnt get ______, can you imagine how great our class would be if we got _____. We need a coach who can recruit."
Land 5 star safety. Have last minute flip from 3 star- terrible recruiting class.
Top player goes out of state. Land 5 of top 10 in state - terrible class

Top flight OP my dude.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

The right move for him . He might get more attention this way

Assuming the coaches are still looking for 2 QBs I wonder if we'll go back after Joyner. It may be too late now though and I know he's a pretty heavy USCjr lean.

Using /s is for cowards.

ESPN 30 for 30 "What if I told you a de-commitment months away from NSD isnt always a bad thing"

Kid got overexcited and committed. Happens. I'm confident CJF will keep with him as long as it's in the best interest of Ellis and VT.

A decade on TKP and it's been time well spent.

Already seeing the effects of Jerod not getting drafted

Always choose joy.

Is that a reflection on the school or on Jerod?

FIRST DOWN, HOKIES!

School. Fuente can't develop pro QBs. Especially ones he recruits personally.

Fuente has been "the guy" for four quarterbacks. Three of the four have received NFL contracts, which is the goal. Come on.

Perception is reality though...if people think that then the consequences are the same as if it were true.

Serious answer? Both

The perception of VT, however fairly or unfairly, after the draft is that the coaches don't have the best interests of the players in mind when it comes to big decisions like that. The perception will be that they should have stepped in and convinced them to stay because they weren't ready. The message will also be that VT has absolutely no clue the kind of player the NFL wants, and will cost you millions in the long term. That is the message that will be told to every big time recruit we're gunning for...

I don't personally agree with it, but that's the reputation we're now going to have to fight.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

How many QBs has Fuente put into the NFL, again?

And he's not an old man.

I got the impression that Evans declaring early caught most people by surprise. Seems more plausible that "declaring for the draft early has risks" should be the real message.

Hopefully recruits/parents/coaches are asking Fuente and Co. about this.

Always choose joy.

Yep..... Same thing occured when Shyrone Stith declared early for the draft after the NC game in Nawlins.... It was years before we got a decent running back........ errrr months!

Lets GO!!!!

Counterpoint to this argument - Clemson.

Pretty sure they run a similar one read offense to Fuente's. Tahj Boyd was drafted in the 6th round by the Jets in 2014, and is now homeless (Strictly NFL speaking... I assume he has an actual residence.)

However, the recruits kept coming in, and now they got rangz, and a 1st round QB in the draft.

Fuente and company are going to have to do what every D1 coach that started anywhere had to do. Build it with what you can get, coach 'em up, get it rolling with W's, sell it, and keep it rolling.

I think it's happening. It's just kind of early.

Leonard. Duh.

Good luck and best to your future.!

Even when you get skunked; fishing never lets you down. 🎣

If he decommited because Jerod didn't get drafted, well, then....goodbye. next man up.

VHokie

Andy Bitter made the comment on twitter that he was going to have a hard time being a QB at 5'11" and 160 lbs. It's a smart move that I feel is based on his physical attributes and wanting to start at some point in his college career.

Come to tech as a slot reciever/tail back/corner?

That's the new goal for us, I guess.

Omg...I just saw those posts. What a bunch of chicken little, sky is falling babies over there. They want Vice and Mitchell fired and are calling for everyone to stop giving money to the Hokie club. Makes me sick. Alot of really dumb fair weather Hokie fans on that other board. You guys are smart over here at TKP however....don't read the posts unless you feel like getting mad and wanting to slap someone around....

VHokie

If the decommit is the result of people throwing shade a Jerod, which I don't agree with (especially kicking him while he's down) then good luck dealing with fans in literally every other conference in college football.

Although, I've heard the SEC fans are especially sweet and kind to recruits that don't commit or decommit from their schools. /s.

Very true. SEC fans are famous for their kindness, compassion, and empathy...especially when they get spurned for another school. As a whole, Hokie fans are fairly classy...although we had a bunch of A-holes surface to pick on Jerod after the draft.

VHokie

fan bases are like opinions: each one has its assholes.

Did I do that right?

I think it's "SEC fan bases are like a$$holes...and they have alot of them."

VHokie

They also stink the most, right?

When you freak about recruiting, remember ultimately having the best recruiting rankings matters less than the on the field results. VT built their program on tweeners that were overlooked by other schools. Based on how productive kids like Farley and Pimpleton were this spring, Fuente looks like a coach that knows how to evaluate players that fit his goals. Defensively, Foster has produced great defenses despite marginal recruiting metrics for some time, and he has two lightly regarded recruits in Chuck Clark and Woody Baron that have NFL contracts as I type this.

Ellis is a special talent. Not only do I think he could be a dangerous quarterback in Fuente's offense; I believe that he could be an impact player as a slot receiver or at corner. Based on Ellis's twitter follows, it appears that he got on the radar of some other big programs after his latest camp performance. Hopefully the staff can sell him on his opportunity to make an impact wherever he thinks he can have the best career.
