Slow up, are we using this as an example of why Jim Rome is a POS? What about Everett for being so thin skinned he throws a fit and assaults Jim. Seriously? Jim was being annoying but what the hell kind of reaction is that from a grown man?
I see your point, but, Everett asked him to stop calling him Chris several times and warned him not to say it again. Rome knew exactly what he was doing calling him Chris and got the response he was looking for. I don't fault Everett one bit for going after him. That altercation was entirely instigated by Rome and he then screamed like a little girl when Everett went after him. If you watch the video, Rome had that coming for a long time. Just another exhibit in the Rome is a Jackass file.
You should fault a grown man for going at him because that's not acceptable adult behavior. It's literally the adult equivalent of a 4th grader getting so upset that he attacks another kid because he wouldn't stop calling him buttface. Both of them were being juvenile, but to lose your composure and resort to violence is embarrassingly childish.
Yeah that whole exchange couldn't have gone better for Jim Rome. He got exactly what he was hoping for. Which makes it worse for Jim Everett because he should've known what Rome's goal was.
I'm just a caveman. I miss the good old days when you could pop a guy for being an asshole, everyone said "Yup, he had it coming to him", and society was more polite for it.
I don't disagree that violence is a poor substitute for reasoned debate, but I hate that people now get to skip past debate right to ad hom or worse personal attacks, generally act like complete tools, especially when dealing with other public figures, and get rewarded for their behavior.
Slander & libel laws in this country have been eviscerated to the point that the media even gets to directly make a heretofore unknown entity into a "public figure", drag that person through the mud, making all sorts of outlandish and demonstrably false claims about them, and then get absolved by the legal system because that individual was a "public figure".
I think there are situations where it makes much more sense or is arguably reasonable to intervene physically. Somebody calling you a different name is not one of them, that's a petty thing to go at someone for. You just need to have thicker skin than that.

It was probably staged, with both acting like childish POSs, and even Howard Cosell would have been proud. I can handle listening to Rome in limited doses, but I can think of better places to get my sports information. He's basically the epitome of what syndicated sports radio has become, all style, but very little substance. 90% of the time, they're not even discussing sports, so why they brand themselves as sports radio is beyond me. They're going for ratings, that's it.
In that case, he didn't really have to act. All he had to do was be himself.

He's totally acting juvenile and is clearly instigating to get a reaction out of Everett. However, the word assault fits, I don't know why it wouldn't as he pushes the table aside and takes him to the ground. Doesn't look like he takes a shot but that's an aggressive move to take someone to the ground. No need to hyperfocus on a word.
And back to the original question. Yes this is still an example of why Rome is a POS. Just because you think Everett acted out of turn, doesn't make Rome less of a douche for trying to instigate a guest on his own show. Unless you think trying to be the Jerry Springer of sports is somehow reputable.

My point was that even though Rome was being a douche, the video is more damning of Everett, who managed to act in an even more embarrassing manner, which I don't really see as debatable. If he had kept his cool and had a little thicker skin this video ends with Rome being a total douche and Everett rising above it, victoriously. When you freak out and throw a table and tackle a guy because he called you the incorrect name a few times, you will 100% end that exchange as the embarrassing loser.
Everett lost that one when he dared Rome to call him that in person.
You lose when you make a threat that you can't (or shouldn't) enforce.
Rome would have looked even smaller if Everett hadn't taken the bait. Who knows, that might have temporarily boosted ratings, but those gimmicks don't work in the long run.

I don't know exactly how to weigh the douche-baggery in this exchange. However, in any conflict, if somebody instigates it as heavily as Rome did here, that person has to be at least very nearly as much of a douche bag as the one that overreacts to physical violence.
It's just like trash talking, you better be able to back it up. If you're going to question a mans masculinity you better be able to defend yourself. Go to any bar and start calling a guy by a girls name, I can guarantee you it won't be long before there's a fight. If you can't back it up then don't do it. I learned that my first day in Wyoming when I saw a guy get knocked off his chair by a guy who looked down at him and said "Quit being such a pussy".

That's not the point. If Rome is going to dish it out he shouldn't cower in fear the second Everett comes at him. If you're going to act like that then be ready for the repercussions.
I don't think Rome was cowering in fear at all, he was just goading him on as he thought it would make for good tv and clearly didn't want to get into a physical altercation. He was wrong to do it, and he has since apologized and even says its a thing he regrets doing, but to be honest that is one of the greatest interview moments ever IMO. I mean how could you let yourself lose your composure over something so small and petty, especially when Everett should of known that he was going to do it.

you're correct, they're both assholes for different reasons. jim rome is an asshole because he sits in a studio and talks tough all day, and expects no one to respond or get upset, or that's how it seems.
i hate colin cowherd, particularly because of his weird antagonism of john wall, but at least cowherd has acknowledged at this point that he says ridiculous things to get people riled up

He still has a CBS radio show, around midday on 101.7 in the NRV.
He is way more into picking fights on the radio than he ever was while on TV.
Only time I hear him is on 106.7 the Fan they run these CBS Sports Minutes and have random sports talking heads give their quick takes on a current sports topic and then use them as filler spots. He has been one of the people they use in that rotation along with Boomer Esiason and others
I liked him, but I also did not watch him more than stopping when flipping through channels. He must have been plummeting in the ratings though or ESPN would have put him on with Stephen A

I listen to DP in the mornings and sometimes listen to Rich Eisen when I go to lunch.
As a result, Colin Cowherd is on when I leave work in the afternoon, and despite how I feel about him I have to admit he's good at what he does. He keeps me listening, even if I'm only listening in hopes of hearing a caller call him out on his shit. He also talks about college football more than most in national sports media, so that doesn't hurt.
Colin is the only national host (outside of SiriuXM college sports nation) who follows and watches college football beyond the "game of the week".
Buzz was just on his show back in February.
Speaking of Buzz, does anybody know the connection between Jay Mohr and Buzz? I've seen Mohr tweeting about him several times and he seems like a big fan.
I follow both on twitter. I haven't heard Jay Mohr's podcast sports show or whatever but he seems pretty funny in twitterland. He also appears to have a ton of respect for Buzz. Sounds like a cool connection to me. Anytime we can make a good impression in Hollywood increases national relevance.
...but to answer your question, no I don't know the story behind the connection.

He still has his terrible radio show. His speaking style is .................................................... (Mack truck size dead air silence while all I can determine is that he is trying to let the audience understand what he just said) ..................................... God awful.
On everyday from noon to 3. Cbs sports radio actually had a decent lineup with Tiki and Tierny (sp?) on in the morning, his horrible show (his interviews are actually enjoyable, but him allowing every idiot in "the jungle" come on and "talk smack" is the most insufferable 3hrs on radio), then had Doug Gottlieb from 3-6 (which, to me, was another very enjoyable and informative show). With gottlieb doing whatever it is he's doing no2 since leaving to interview for the OkState job they move TnT to his slot.
According to the internet (realiable, I know), Rome has a yearly salary of $30,000,000, making him the highest paid radio personality in the world. How the hell he negotiated that is beyond me.
I think Tiki and Tierny got canned. They moved the DA show from 6 pm to Tiki's 9 am timeslot. Their is a new 6 pm show with a Reider?
I was under the impression that TnT was moving to Doug's slot...but I haven't gotten to listen to that station in a while (AM radio is hit and miss)
Could be that happened. I haven't had a chance to turn into the 3-6 show in the last couple weeks.
Close enough. Doug interviewed for the OkSt job but was also taking a job with FS1, which is where he is now. TnT took over that time slot. In the NRV, we only get the first hour of TnT then the 4-6 slot is filled with a local show -- the Clubhouse.
Gottlieb is the 3-6 PM guy for Fox Sports Radio
Tiki and Tierney is the worst show of all time (I'll admit Rome is a very close second). Tierney is incredibly annoying (uhhh huhhh every 2 seconds when he isn't talking) and Tiki doesn't have a clue on half of the topics they discuss.
I don't think John Feinstein is on there anymore, but I really enjoyed him.
I will say that Kyle "Brendan Motley for ACC MVP" Bailey had a really great show for something that was a small market. Hopefully Danny Nokes can get pick it up and get to level it was before Kyle left.

I used to listen to his radio show back around 2006-2007. I did not like him once he went to TV.
I can dig Cowherd but not Rome. What happened to him? He was removed from my radar, and I am better off for it.

I enjoy Mike and Mike every once in a while and I can stomach Russillo and Kanell if they're on. I've listened to Cowherd for a long time so he's bearable. Growing up it the NRV, it was always Big Dog Sports in the afternoons.
PMT may have ruined Mike and Mike for me. I never realized just how many plugs greenie throws in until PFT started mocking him. Cannot stand LeBatard, I'll listen to Rome any day of the week over him. I liked Rusillo and Kanell (does this show even exist anymore? Danny got canned from ESPN, correct?). Liked Cowherd, but he could turn into a broken record really quickly.
Mike and Mike are absolute MORONS. Prior to the Battle at Bristol they did a full segment talking about the game, all they did was slurp the SEC, say that Frank Beamer was still our head coach and called VT, "West Virginia," twice in the segment. Worst sports talk radio/journalism I've ever heard and I'll never tune in to them again.
Rome's still on CBS Sports Radio in the noon-3 Eastern time slot. I've always enjoyed his radio show, but I could never get into his various TV shows. I've never understood why he's so polarizing, though. I get that he's deliberately annoying, and that lots of people may not enjoy his schtick, but I don't get why so many people despise him so vehemently. He seems more knowledgeable than most hosts and has grown into a very good interviewer since the early days and the Everett fiasco.
Yeah I have a very similar take, as i never watched his shows either on ESPN or Showtime, but I stream his show at work everyday unless he is on vacation and KB was guest hosting before his GMFB gig. Its the only sports talk show I can find bearable really and that's probably because it isn't a typical sports show. The interviews are some of the best out there for most of the guests, he touches on things most people don't and doesn't really waste too much time with the obvious things. He definitely has his schtick and can be annoying or give an overthetop BS opinion trying to get someone to call in and correct him. He always says come with a take and don't suck are the only things required for callers. Some of the calls are great, some are trainwrecks, but he's always said give him an A or give him an F and that is pretty much what you get. Plus the smack off might be one of the greatest inventions of any sports show, just 3 hours of trash talk from the best callers of the show.
Plus he did give David Stern hell a few times which is always a plus in my book.
Like someone posted up above he makes a ton of money for his show, so its obviously sucessful or he wouldn't be paid so well and the format being so different is why he'll be able to do it for as long as he wants because in a day and age where you can get instant scores, transactions, and everything else sports related from the internet.
I just want a show with Mark May, Paul Finebaum, Colin C, Jim R, Stephen A Smith, and Skip Bayless yelling at each other for an hour. Can I get that? Fan favorite.

The more I think of it, the harder it is to understand why there's so much dislike for Rome here on TKP, of all places. It's 3 hours a day of non-stop non sequiturs, inside jokes and caller-on-caller violence. If there's a better audio analogy for the comment section of every TKP article ever, I've yet to see it. The only thing missing is endless Emma Watson gifs, which just don't translate to the radio medium.

He has a new podcast he just started. He did have a way with words during his Rome is Burning segment. I liked some of his schtick when it can be trimmed down. I think trying to run an entire sports radio show for hours by yourself is going to lead to dead air. He was ahead of his time in terms of sports radio which I feel is now dominated by trolls and empty talking heads.
I never really understood most of his gimmicks, the culture of the show, half of what he said, or why he put his own arrogance out there so blatantly. It was too west coast/Cali and too much about how smart he presented himself and too little about sports. I'm a hillbilly. Over my head, I guess. Lol.
A couple of the guys on one of the Atlanta sports radio stations were talking about Rome. Had nothing good to say about him. Apparently his arrogance isn't just his radio persona. They said that most of his takes on things are written by his staff and little of it is his own knowledge/thinking.
I never understood his show. He spent half the time saying "it was amazing. incredible. I have some great takes on that coming up." He would never actually get to his point..he just kept saying he would.
