I grew up in Charlottesville. Fully 20% of my HS and practically everyone in the classes I took went to LOLUVa. I currently work in Lynchburg so there's still a lot of Wahoos around me. As such, I am constantly reminded of the extreme douchebaggery with which every "1st year" is indoctrinated during orientation. It also means that I get to see innumerable examples of how the school and its adherents don't live up to their own delusions.
I heard this one on NPR yesterday and, as a mechanical engineer, it just cracked me up. What do you do with an ME degree from LOLUVa? Anything but actual engineering, that's for damned sure.
Just wanted to post this and give anyone else a forum for bashing LOLUVa because it's the off season and I'm bored at work.

I'm on the opposite end of this situation as a GIS professional that analyzes data and does some programming along with the usual cartography type stuff. When I tell people what I do, they always say something like, "So you're an engineer?" It doesn't help that my work badge says ENGINEERING in a yellow highlighted block.
I deflect that admiration to my colleagues who have the actual engineering degrees.

I'm with you on this. I just took a Systems engineering masters course that "lightly" touched into System Architecture. Those people are architects for sure.

People adding the term architect to the end of whatever discipline they have studied bothers me infinitely less than how awful the architectural profession and its various representative bodies (AIA, et. al.) have been at communicating what it is we do and how our unique abilities and skillset could benefit society. After many years in the industry it seems most folks look at it as either Architecture with a capital A (too high brow for the benefit of everyman) or as just another hurdle in the development/construction process.
I won't get into anymore of it as it's off topic, but suffice to say that my opinion is that if architects would concern themselves more with establishing their value through demonstration more than legislative elitism perhaps they'd find themselves in a better market position.

You are at a social event and ask someone what they do. They reply, "I am an architect."
What is your first and probably only thought?
Do you think landscape architect? Software or systems architect? Probably not. At least not unless they preface the term architect with any of those disciplines.
My point is that using the term architect isn't quite the same as using the term engineer. To me, the term architect can stand alone and describe one's profession adequately. Unprefaced, you design buildings, urban planning, etc. Prefaced, you can possibly do any of the aforementioned non-building related things. But the term engineer by itself doesn't really tell me much. I don't think there is an unprefaced engineer, except maybe the guy on a train. Without some form of descriptor, I have no clue what you do, outside of the general notion of what engineering is.
It's early and I've not had any coffee. Hopefully I'm communicating my thoughts adequately.
Again, I mean no disrespect to those who use the prefaced form of the term architect. Do as you wish and do it well. I don't care what my clients call me, just as long as they call me.

This is always an interesting conversation to me and I have had it with many architects. First, let's start with the etymology of the term. An "architect" at its root is only the Lead Designer. If you work as part of the team you are still a student of architecture until you become the "chief builder" who is leading the project. In modern day we go to Architecture school to learn and then get licensed. But does having a license mean you are an architect? I know many licensed architects that only do technical drawings or only do conceptual design, they are an "architect" by profession but they only do one aspect of the trade.
What about the "star"chitects? You may be surprised at how few of them actually do any work now or ever. Many of them had great support staff of actual architects that were less of marketable character. I know, because I have worked with many of them. Are they architects? These people tend to be visionaries more than architects, yet they are labeled so.
What about someone who is not licensed but can fully design buildings? Are they not an architect because they are not licensed? Many times those on the licensing panels are fairly poor architects themselves. Who are they to judge? But someone that knows how to build, is a designer of buildings and leads those projects surely is an architect, yes?
So the non-prefixed term itself is already a misnomer. There are too many instances that the term incorrectly defines who a person may or may not be as a "chief builder" of buildings. Yes the term does illicit the notion of designing buildings to the average person but it doesn't accurately depict what any one "architect" may do in their job, or their ability to perform architecture holistically.
I find this line telling in your notion of the term:
Architects are not Urban Planners. Nor are they Urban Designers. Or any type of "etc". They design buildings and some structures. That's it. Urban planning is a completely different skillset that is not automatically acquired if you are an architect. In my experience, I would say 99% of all architects are incredibly poor urban planners or urban designers.
I agree that the skillset is not valued accurately enough but that is also because the term as I just explained is too broadly used among actual architects. If you truly want the value to the term then you need to restrict its use to only very few, and they are only those truly designing and leading entire projects. Everyone else is still learning the trade as a intern, journeyman, cad monkey whatever you want to call them.
Let's get into the prefaced use of the term. Again the etymology is that the architect is "chief builder" but not necessarily of "buildings" just of anything. So you could be an "architect" of almost anything that you "build". Systems architects, landscape architects, interior architects are all meant to be masters at their type of "building". Does this devalue or add value to the term? Pulling that term out for things that are not actually a building should actually add value to the term "architect" because it is at the top of the etymological tree. Everything stems from that term. One can be a builder of landscapes but that does not make one a "architect" rather a "landscape architect". One can build logical structures for computing systems but that does not make one a "architect"... and on and on and on.
Final point, a disclaimer on me, we don't know each other but I guarantee you have seen a lot of my work. I have designed 100s of buildings, landscapes, interiors (not as many) and even entire cities all over the world as the lead designer. I am not famous nor have I ever tried to be famous, but have worked with or know many "star"chitects even beating them in competition, and have had this very debate with them. Most everyone that meets me professionally automatically labels me as an architect.
Yet I have never gotten a single professional license/registration anywhere.

It's different when you're outside of USA. And I hit China at the right time when tbe market was insane. Clients were literally building off of hand drawings in those days. I don't even count those projects in my portfolio. And along the way I have made extremely unique friends.
Not sure where u are in your career but highly recommend getting international experience. I still design but have gotten into new ventures as well.

I had to go pull a ground wire out of a 24 volt PLC this week for a programmer because he was afraid the GROUND wire might shock him when he touched it and that he'd rather leave it to a professional.. . . . .
That is ridiculous. I do software everyday but I am so glad I one of my undergrad degree and masters in Electrical Engineering. It is so useful to have an understanding of the hardware your software is running on. CS majors should have to take more hardware classes.

So this totals to 330 points without estimating a score for UNCvUVA. Since the average is 30 ppg, that means this posted assumes they will score 360 total points in a season. That would put them in the low to mid 60s of last years scoring offenses.
Last year, they posted 270, largely because they had the ball so much because defense is a strange and scary phenomenon. Tackling someone is so uncivilized. They finished 115 in the nation in scoring offense.
Even their best year in recent memory (2015) they only tallied 327 points.

Smoke Mizzell was the only player keeping them afloat. Hell, he was the only ACC player ever to have 1,500+ rushing and receiving career totals, he was top 20 for UVA rushers, and their #2 all time in receptions. He caught a pass in every game he played in except his debut.
I love hating on UVA as much as any red blooded Hokie but Mizzell was special for them and he is gone.

As a mechanical engineer who graduated and ran as far away from engineering as possible., I feel ashamed to be compared to a UVA grad.
Just found this today, pretty much sums it up
My favorite story involving an interaction I had with a UVA alum doesn't really involve ridicule, and isn't much of a story, but here you go.
I was in Williamsburg for a fencing tournament a couple of years ago. I checked into my hotel the evening before the event and headed over to the local Moe's to grab a bite to eat before turning in for the night. The fellow who rang me up commented on my class ring. I told him it was from Virginia Tech and he said something to the effect of "Oh cool, I got my bachelors and masters in Architecture from UVA". I replied cordially, something like "That's cool man, have a good one".
It didn't hit me until I had walked out the door that I had just been sold fast food by someone with two degrees from Mr. Jefferson's University.
I'm not one to bash someone for being on hard times and having to take whatever job you can. I appreciate the humility necessary to do that.
I will, however, chuckle at someone who's parents sunk however many thousands of dollars into going to a school like LOLUVa for two degrees and still having to work fast food.
One of my best friends got his degree at LOLUVa. And then promptly realized he couldn't actually make a living with it so he went back to school at VCU to get a degree that would serve that purpose. Now he makes significantly more than I do.
My cousin with his GED and my brother in law with his associate degree in automotive technology at one point both made significantly more than I do as a civil engineer. Of course the GED was the CFO for a Hotel in NJ and the brother in law works as IT for Fidelity.
I don't necessarily think of it as bashing the individual for being forced into a situation where they needed to take a job like that to get by. I thought it was funny because of the typical UVA fan narrative of UVA alums making more than a Tech grad being turned on its head.
I prefer to keep bashing separate from people with legitimate misfortune. I say that having known VT grads who couldn't get a job in their chosen field, e.g. Computer Science majors who ended up in the food industry. Eventually it works out, but it's not a direct path.
I volunteered as the library reader when each of my kids were in kindergarten. The librarian at my kids' school was my third grade teacher and she also had graduated from UVA. I usually had 5 minutes to chat with her before my child's class arrived at the library. In one of those moments, we were talking about how she came to Hanover schools and how Hanover hires quite a few UVA grads. She indicated that hiring UVA grads isn't what it used to be. She shared a story of a first year teacher from UVA that refused any help from the other teachers and was telling them, "I don't need your help, I know what I'm doing." That statement definitely fits the stereotype of a typical UVA grad.

Considering they lost games last year, in part, due to the fact that they didn't have a consistent kicker for anything farther than a PAT, probably a good number.
Can confirm. 5* kickers just mean they will be a reliable kicker at the DI level. It is not the same thing as other positions being a 5*. It's more equivalent to a 3*.
