2018 3-star RB Cole Beck

Since this seems to be a recruit that is being asked about a lot I thought we could start a Cole Beck catch all thread and everyone could ask or answer any and all questioned related to his recruitment or lack thereof.

The Blacksburg HS prospect does NOT currently have an offer from the Hokies. He announced a top five of North Carolina, East Carolina, Virginia, Louisville, Pitt on July 3.

Cole Belk tweeted on August 5th that he has received an offer from Virginia Tech.

Even I'm not a huge fan of this thread...

So we should have someone ask every four days

What about that Beck kid from Blacksburg

In three different threads? Nope this way when someone wonders " what about that Beck kid" look there is a thread to ask the question for the tenth time in a week right here.

In my opinion, this is MUCH better than asking "Why didn't we recruit that other kid?" on a thread dedicated to one of VT's committed players.

It's like a lightning rod. You don't want to attract lightning, but it's a lot better to channel it than to pretend it's not happening.

I get what you're trying to do here, but I'm not sure it's a good look. I think this is calling way too much attention on a high school kid who probably doesn't appreciate a thread that basically implies ("implies" since we don't REALLY know the details) that he's not being recruited by his home-town team. And yes, in my humble opinion the occasional question/comment in other threads is more low-key than a whole thread dedicated to the topic.

How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Jet Sweep

On the flip side he could appreciate that (judging by the question repeatedly popping up) there's a group of dedicated Hokie fans that think he should be recruited. I have faith this will not devolve into anyone bashing the kid.

What about that Beck kid from Blacksburg?

A decade on TKP and it's been time well spent.

Yeah we should really have an easy to find thread where half the people say what about this local kid and the other half trash him and say hes no good at football and should run track. /s

This thread is unnecessary

Haven't seen a single person say he is no good or trash. People have said his skill level and talent isn't what VT needs, they say he has some gaps in his skill set but if someone said he was trash that person would be looking at serious downvotes.

It was much better in another recruit's commitment celebration thread. /s

I think the discussion about recruits we didn't offer is unnecessary, but if we're going to have it, have it in it's own thread.

The intention of the thread is good, but it probably will still come up every other recruiting thread. It's time to move on. We are not giving him an offer and he is going to go one of the good schools that have offered him. We may regret. We may not. We won't know for quite awhile.

This thread has already turned into thread about whether or not we need a thread about Beck.

Using /s is for cowards.

At least it has stopped people from asking why Fuente hasn't offered him.

Even when you get skunked; fishing never lets you down. 🎣

Because he was not that good in high school, no P5 basketball program offered him, basketball has a lot fewer scholarships to offer that throwing one at a kid who might turn out good isn't a great way to run a program.

I don't have a problem with him not getting an offer. But, my understanding is that Del and Stephan both for some reason thought one was coming. Hard to say exactly what happened, but you have to handle the son of the best player in program history with kid gloves.

From what I have heard he was offered a walk on spot with a likely scholarship after a redshirt year. He just happened to be in the same year as a Top 100 commit at his same position.

Dell thought it was fair, but Mama Curry wanted his son to play immediately. The rest is the history of the best 3pt shooter ever.

I agree with you, but as far as this thread/subthread is concerned let's

Nipping it in the bud is underrated.

Plus you can't count out the effect the system and coaching had on his development at Davidson. We saw like two years later what Seth Greenberg can do with a group of talented players that don't fit his system. Remember when Marquis Rankin, and Robert Brown, and Cj Barksdale all became all-time VT greats, and successfully made the NBA jump?

For all we know, if Steph came here, he would have mostly ridden the bench, and not gotten a look from any teams. Maybe the Davidson offense was better suited to his talents. Maybe the Davidson coaching staff did a better job helping with his development than Greenberg could have. Hell, we don't even know if something happened in his personal life while he was at Davidson that caused him to really focus on basketball.

There's no guarantee that his career trajectory would have been the same as it is if he came to VT.

Thank you fireman. I'm honestly extremely tired of this kid popping up in every thread. He hasn't gotten an offer, he won't be getting an offer, case closed. I hope he has a great career wherever her goes, but it won't be in Blacksburg.

Who's Cole Beck?

I'll be honest, I wondered the same thing when this was posted. Thinking it was some big time recruit that we were holding our breath for, turns out he's a 3 star running back at Blacksburg High, with offers from Pitt, UVA, Louisville, ECU, and a few others. But we haven't offered him. Yet his name pops up on recruiting threads constantly.

Does anyone know if he even wants to stay in Blacksburg and play for Virginia Tech?

I thought about creating a thread to discuss the validity of this thread so that we could save space here to discuss Cole Beck's recruitment (or lack thereof)... I decided not to because I figured it might get my account frozen.

Someone explain to me the difference between this and the MJ Walker thread and why no one argued against the creation of that one

No one publicly bashed Walker

Walker is/was a 5*/top 25 player in nation

Everybody wanted him to commit

Walker had a scholarship

Bleeding burnt orange and chicago maroon

I haven't seen anyone 'bash' this kid, other than to say that if the coaching staff actually wanted him, then he'd have an offer.

The only difference is the player himself. The purpose of both threads is to channel the discussion in one place so that it's easy to find. A few months ago, every single basketball thread had a "what's the news on MJ Walker" comment (I was one of the ones asking). The thread was created and worked great. So other than Star-rating, I still don't see a difference.

The difference is that we were anticipating him committing and Cole Beck we are wondering why we haven't offered him. Two different things. Maybe basking wasn't the greatest word but we still have plenty of comments saying he's not a Fuente guy or not a football player or mainly a track guy, etc.

There isn't any comparison/similarities

Bleeding burnt orange and chicago maroon

MJ Walker was a highly rated, highly sought after recruit whose commitment could be considered transformational for VT basketball. The coaching staff was strongly pursuing him.

Cole Beck is fast, and by all accounts a good kid, but he is not a recruit who could change the face of the football program nor is he strongly being pursued .

Isn't that kind of the point of this thread? It's about a local kid who has offers to other ACC schools and yet not one from VT. So automatically this thread begs the question "so why hasn't the offer come?" At which point the conversation will turn to why it hasn't happened, which turns this into a "why Cole Beck isn't good enough for VT" thread. Might not have been your original intent but it's inevitable this thread would lead to that result.

Show me where anyone has said that on this thread, and where did HF say it in the OP? This is simply a thread to channel the discussion so that people can just find the news and don't have to say 'I'm sure it's been asked before but........' 500 times

Ouch! Who said that? Not getting an offer doesn't mean "you're not good enough". It may well mean they feel they're looking for some other combination of skills, or feel they have that skill set covered. That's not the focus of this thread.

I think what Fireman was trying to do was provide a location for the discussions that kept showing up in other threads.

I gotta say this feels like we are reaching for hurt feelings. Its a logical discussion and if the kid resents VT for not offering, not talking about it won't help. Its obvious to me that the interest is actually rooted in how much some hokies respect the skills he has. The only posts I have seen that even come close to negativity are by those saying we shouldn't be so negative.

This thread is getting a bit overloaded. Better make a part 2!

Cole Beck could turn out to be a great player and is a division one talent just doesn't fit in the Hokies offensive scheme. He will get a chance to make the state of Virginia proud just wouldn't get the chance at VT based off our needs. Dude is a good kid with a lot of talent but this isn't Hokies of old that will offer just because he is in our backyard.

Best of luck to him and I for one will be pulling for him unless he is playing against VT.

Let's all agree this is more of part the change we aren't used to at VT. We have a great recruiting class almost full and we aren't saving spots for local guys to keep coaches happy. Changes are hard but recruits are taking notice and we will see more of this.

"Welcome to the Terror Dome." -- Corey Moore

Offering because he's close isn't good for him or us.

Talented players should go where their talents can shine. Not necessarily to the school that's close. Obviously, for whatever reason, our staff feels like his talents aren't exactly what we're looking for. That's not to say he isn't extremely talented...but why should we try hard to get him here if he would look better elsewhere?

Perhaps if Mr. Beck REALLY wants to stay home and play for the good guys, he could take the preferred walk-on route. That way he could prove his doubters wrong, possibly earn a scholly, and if he doesn't, he still gets his degree from Hometown U. If not, then I think we all could agree that we wish him the best at finding a good fit.

Take the shortest route to the ball and arrive in bad humor.

Is preferred walk-on an option for him at Tech?

In any case, I would be shocked if he, or any other kid, would pass up a full ride in order to prove their doubters wrong.

Did Rogers have a full ride offer from another school? I didn't see anything on the recruiting sites but I don't know if they'd list FCS or DII offers.

Warning: this post occasionally contains strong language (which may be unsuitable for children), unusual humor (which may be unsuitable for adults), and advanced mathematics (which may be unsuitable for liberal-arts majors)..

Did Rogers have a full ride offer from another school?

I want to say he had a scholarship from JMU, IIRC.

I recall hearing that he had at least one scholarship offer, but chose to walk on at the VT.

There are many unknowns here. We don't know if he even wants to go to VT. We don't know if VT would ask him or accept him as a preferred walk-on. I agree totally that if Mr. Beck were my kid, and several universities were lining up to offer him a full ride that he wanted to turn down, I'd be having a LOOONG talk with said kid. I'm just saying that if the PWO option is available, and he was so inclined, that could hold some value for him.

Take the shortest route to the ball and arrive in bad humor.

He'll try to prove his doubters wrong by going to ECU or any of the ACC schools.

This thread is so unnecessary. For a forum that loves tired jokes you got fed up with a tired genuine question about recruiting very quickly.

The whole TKP harder isn't very welcoming for a group that wants to increase site membersq. Its not very hard to discretely answer when someone asks about beck or point to a previous answer. Not whatever this is

I think this thread is fine. It's more efficient to discover threads with the Tracker than it is via search (which indexes all comments). More well-titled threads that have substantive guts are very much encouraged. Hopefully this thread cuts down on the repetitiveness of the topic.

Keep in mind, TKPers and Hokies are going to be naturally curious about a prospect blowing up in Tech's back yard. Especially one that the Hokies evaluated in person and did not offer. That is not a bad thing, and it's not a knock on Beck. (And honestly, an offer just to offer would be the worst thing for both parties.)

Virginia Tech offers and recruits personnel that fit its schemes and needs. Just as Fuente was quick to pounce on a little-known wide receiver 665 miles away from Muskegon, Michigan (Kalil Pimpleton), he decided to pass on a local prospect. Fuente and Foster are going to target the players they believe are the best fit for what they want to do on offense and defense, respectively, regardless of stars and location.

Sorry about the substance of the post, I was purposely trying to stay vague to allow any and all comments about him to come here. Didn't realize it would turn into the shitstorm it did.

No worries HF.... it was probably inevitable that this post would get sideways occasionally but I think it has served your initial wish of keeping most of this discussion in one place.

Like most Hokies I'd bet, we wish CB the very best and hopes he reps B'burg and VA well wherever he ends up.

"Everyone has a plan 'till they get punched in the mouth."

So I have purposefully been staying away from commenting on this topic for a while, but since it has it's own thread, here are my thoughts:

1. Above all else, I trust the coaches to recruit and evaluate and offer who they see fit.

2. I am in the (probable) minority who would like to see this kid get an offer. I know we have evaluated this kid in person, but I hope that he isn't getting the Isaiah Ford effect (or maybe the opposite of it). What I mean is we all knew Ford was an awesome receiver, but he went to the combine and didn't perform all that well and a lot of teams didn't "offer" him, and it sounds like he's having a pretty great camp so far. With Beck, he was extremely productive in HS, so there has to be more to him than just a speed guy, but maybe didn't perform well at camp(s). That being said, please see thought #1.

3. If he doesn't have what it takes to be a running back, if nothing else it seems like he could be worth the spot as a kick returner (not punt returner). I think good kick returners have that straight line speed to find a lane and get up field without dancing too much, and watching his film it seems like that's what he excels at. However, it probably doesn't make sense to use a scholarship just for a kick returner (unless your LOLUVA, which they have).

4. Please reread thought number 1.

LOLUVA plans on returning a bunch of kickoffs this year.

"Wow, LOLUVa's returner set an NCAA record for return yards!"
"You mean yards per return?"

Beck is still open to other schools so he could commit if an offer comes through. I read that he grew up a Tech fan. I'm just baffled that so many people trust the coaches when Fuente only had two good years feasting on AAC creampuffs and the RB coach Burden has spent most of his career as a WR coach. I'll be mad if the Florida RB does a last minute flip if he gets an offer from a top-tier FL school. Fuente's offense looks better than the Franknstine offense but does it really work against top-tier teams? We'll see if Fuente's offense if effective without Ford/Hodges/Evans. Beck's film looks good and his track times show he can outrun most DB's. I would think the coaches would offer him so he doesn't end up scoring TD's against Tech for UVA, UNC or Pitt.

Welcome to TKP!! Glad to have you. It's true that Fuente only had "two good years feasting on AAC creampuffs" but he did well against higher level competition when he got the chance and he did so with AAC level talent. It's not like he pulled 5 star RBs and still only did OK in the G5. There are certainly questions on offense, but, by all accounts, our problem is not talent or scheme, just experience. Fuente has proven he can work with whatever he has and I'm excited to see what form that takes this year. Throw in the safety net of a Foster defense and I think we'll be just fine.

I don't think anyone thinks that Burden is making the call on who gets RB scholly offers given that both his boss (Cornelson) and his boss's boss (Fuente) are the architects of the offensive vision. I see Burden as being a recruiter who gets to apply his football knowledge to a position that might not be his most experienced, but he's got some good support with such an involved HC and OC.

I trust our coaches and hope Beck finds a good fit for himself. If that's on a team that plays against the hokies, I hope he has at least 11 great games a year, but one notable stinker...

We scored 35 points against Clemson. Considering Urban Meyer's Ohio State team scored 0 and Alabama scored 31 it seems his offense performed pretty well against the eventual national champion. But maybe they weren't top tier?

I disagree that Beck film looks good. If you look past the obvious in that he scores a lot of TD, and look at his running style you will see that he is not very shifty. He is a take the hand off and run straight ahead as fast as I can kind of guy. In SWVA, where speed isn't the same as other area's of the state/country, Beck gets away with just being straight line fast. Based on his film, I believe that he would struggle with zone reads, reading his blocks, setting up blocks and making guys miss. I think at G5 or FCS Beck could potentially grow into a decent back, but not in Fuente's system.

1-0 every week

I disagree that Beck film looks good.

Two things stood out for me when I watched:
- The Blacksburg OL is able to create gaping holes for him to run through
- I don't think I saw any receptions on the tape.

In a way, he reminds me of a player from down my way in GA, 4* RB Taj Griffin (#1 All-Purpose Back of the class of 2015). He starred for McEachern High and his highlights were due to track speed (4.35) and McEachern's OL opening up huge holes for him to get to the second level and into open space. I perceived his negatives to be an inability to power through defenders and a limited receiving skillset. He's struggled his first two years at Oregon and looks to be their 3rd or 4th teamer this season. I'm not saying those are Beck's weakness too (I don't know enough about him to claim that), but if that's the case, I could see why he hasn't received an offer from us to date.

Looked like it was working against Clemson.

Have you considered joining TKP Club?

Go Hokies

Thus far, Beck has offers from East Carolina, Louisville, UNC, Pitt, UVA, App State, BC, Bowling Green, Buffalo, Coastal Carolina, Delaware St, ETSU, JMU, Kent State, Kentucky Christian, Liberty, Marshall, UMASS, Miss State, ODU, Richmond, Temple, UAB, UCF, Western Michigan, Youngstown State.

FBS: 19
FCS: 6
NCCAA/NAIA: 1

His current top five include ECU, Louisville, UNC, Pitt, and UVA. His success at any of the five would almost guarantee we run into him.

If he gets touches at any of those schools it means we'll get to hear about where he's from about 20 times during that game per year.

In related news Jarrett Boykin has big hands and Bucky Hodges is tall.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

NCCAA: 1

I see what you did there. Have a leg!

Are you counting Liberty and Coastal Carolina as FBS?

Coastal should be FCS. Liberty was counted as FBS.

Not guaranteeing I can count. I get distracted easily.

More than anything I was trying to get back onto the topic rather than talking about need for the thread.

Should definitely go to Youngstown State, who wouldn't want to play for this?

I've seen Bud give some serious ass chewings on the sideline before. Donaldvan (sp?) Manning comes to mind from a few years back.

You will see this game, this upset and this sign next on ESPN Sportscenter. Virginia Tech 31 Miami 7

His decision was made after a phone call with longtime Virginia Tech assistant coach Bud Foster. All Foster told him was, "We win. They don't."

What about ol "Slappy". An 'eer will pull that one out on some message board somewhere before the opener.

The coaches have to be seeing something they don't like. He is right down the road so I am sure he has been watched as much as any player that gets an offer. Fuente likes to have the threat of a jet sweep or screen to pull defenders out of position and I would think a kid with blazing speed would do the trick. I won't guess to what his holding the offer back since I haven't watched any tape, but there must be some deal breaker.

Plan for the worst and hope for the best, not the other way around.

My own scorching take. Fuente knows exactly what skill sets he wants (we have seen it with the redundancies in specific roles and positions in his recruiting.) I will worry much more about Fuente recruiting a player hard and not getting him, than a player who has some ability not getting a scholarship offer. To me, that is a big red flag that says the unoffered player's skill set doesn't fit what he needs from the offense.

As for Steph Curry vs Seth Greenberg, I can't pass up an opportunity to dump on that clown. Curry had a skillset that VT desperately needed, and Greenberg was too daft to not realize that redundancies in his player's skillsets were making his team easy to defend with zones. Even if Curry had been a spot guy guy ala Craig Hodges, it still would have been a win. Greenberg was a garbage coach. I said it when he was canned' that was a red letter good day.

I get the Greenberg criticism and agree it is deserved to some degree, but he is the second winningest coach in school history and arguably our best overall coach in the last 30 years aside from Buzz Williams. While that can certainly be attributed to the degree of our basketball ineptitude, Seth did have more success than several other coaches managed.

Oh hell, Cnote91, I was high that day. That doesn't make any sense at all, you can be second, third, fourth... hell you can even be fifth.

...and that should have given him the leeway to give a schollie to Dell's kid. Greenberg had enough goodwill built up that no one at all would have questioned him about it if it didn't work out. Especially when the majority of us boosters at the time wanted Steph to get an offer from us.

Yeah, withdrawn.

I'm not a huge Greenburg fan but this whole looking back on the Steph Curry recruitment is dumb. If Steph was ACC caliber he would have had an offer if not from us, than someone else. Its not like he played in the middle of nowhere. Plus we had gone 16-14 and 15-14 the two seasons before his class signed, Seth was probably feeling pressure to win. We had one open scholarship and signed a top 100 guy. It's easy to say in hindsight we should have recruited him but its tough to project a 6 foot 150 lb kid to play ACC caliber basketball.

Play zone defense against a Seth Greenberg team, and they fell apart.

Outside of ball movement (again, on the coach), what busts zones? Pick and roll to pure spot up shooters. Curry had red flags as a recruit. Spot up shooting was not one.

It didn't help that Seth treated folks like garbage, and everything he has done and said since only reinforces that the Virginia Tech athletic department is better off that he is in Bristol Connecticut getting the Matt Millen paycheck.

No doubt Greenberg's offenses were frequently abysmal. Even the year VT made the tournament, both games were like watching a tortoise hump a rock for 40 minutes. I still don't know how we pulled it out against Illinois because it was agonizing to sit through. Not to mention one of my biggest gripes is that Greenberg's end of game play designs were probably the worst I've ever seen.

Despite those shortcomings, he got his teams to play hard and with a chip on their shoulder until the last few seasons. I do wonder if things would not have gotten as bad if Delaney's class had made the tournament at least once because it seems like there was a lot of pent up bitterness surrounding the program by the time that class graduated. Anyway I agree it was time for both parties to part ways and even though his firing was botched it has eventually worked out.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

One small thing I noticed during Greenberg's span that told me he wasn't a great coach: inbounding the basketball. If there was a stat for this I would bet that we led the league in turnovers and 5 second calls on inbounds plays, drove me crazy. That and the fact that any time it was late in the game and it was close there was never a play drawn up, it was just "Dowdell (or Gordon, or Delaney), go make a play." Passionate guy, terrible at the X's and O's.

The Golden God

I'm sure this kid will do great in whatever he chooses. With his speed though he needs to seriously consider going to Florida, Oregon, LSU, Texas a & m, or my neck of the woods Arkansas. He'll be a star and win multiple championships and probably be in line to make lots of money as a pro. I bet he could go to any of these schools he wants to on a full ride as well. his kind of speed doesn't grow on trees.

Didn't want to revive this one, but my Twitter said Guerry, Fuente, and other VT accounts just followed him.

I believe he was trying on UNC jerseys

UNC would easily be the most polarizing school for him to end up at. Given the strong opinions on both Fedora's utilization of RBs and Beck's skill set, I imagine his time at UNC would be highly scrutinized on this board.

Sure.

Like to the August recruiting thread.

There's only going to be one time where Beck is going to be on the enemy team for me. It's this year when the Blacksburg Bruins face off against my Single Wing Spartans of Giles County

Leg for Spartan Single-Wingin', but let's not be so hasty. Even if he commits to the cousins or LOLUVA? I wish the kid well, but if he did, he'd still be on the enemy team.

If you play it, they will win.

Back in the day, we ran our scout offense during game week without a football when preparing for Giles and the single wing. Everyone had a key and it was assignment football. Tough to defend when it's ran right.

You need a lot of good athletes to run the Single Wing the right way

This was in the late 90's and you had some good athletes.

I heard a rumor that Christiansburg is changing to the Single Wing with their new football coach. I say good luck to them this year

Not sure where else to put this.

Blacksburg just running-clocked Salem, 49-12. Yes. Salem. The team that dominated on the way to the 4A state championship last year.

Cole had 303 yards. Salem has 330-some yards total.

Makes me feel much better about Giles getting killed by them.

If you play it, they will win.

I logged on to make sure this has been posted.....

Hope he stays home!!!

I really hope Beck comes to VT, and honestly I wouldn't even be crushed if he didn't play football for the Hokies.

Our track and field team might be the Virginia Tech sport that is closest to winning a national champ, and he is the equivalent of a 5-star (or at least high 4-star) recruit on the track.

I used to be with it, but then they changed what it was. Now what I'm with isn't it, and what's it seems weird and scary to me.

Sure would be nice if we were on that kids radar

Wait a second!
