They stored the film as bacteria DNA, which could be placed in a human cell. IF you had the right equipment to download the movie from the DNA, you could watch it.

I'm pretty sure 'Tombstone' is encoded in my DNA already....I can re-watch it in my brain in flight, long meetings, visits with in-laws, etc.

DNA is a 4 base "language." It's a little bit like how you can code with binary.

So what are the implications here, what can we do with this?

So, there aren't memories in your DNA. No Assassin's Creed sorry.

Implication wise, DNA has been speculated as a form of storage for a while now, at least a decade or more. With how little room it takes up, DNA can be packaged, unpacked, read, and copied fairly reliably with things that do a proof check essentially.

The human genome for example is roughly 700 megabytes of information. This is all contained within one single cell.

Tests like this using bacteria are often times used because 1) bacteria is easy to grow and 2) they want to do a proof of concept. This was fairly reliably reproduced meaning the storage and extraction worked fairly well.

If folks aren't familiar, we are getting really good at manipulating genes and DNA in general.

The author's reasoning is multi-fold: curiosity, proof-of-principle, and suggesting a hypothesis why each neuron is different, despite being the exact same cell-type. (The hypothesis is, as I understand, short sequences can code for a unique function within themselves with an appropriate decoder. Thus, there could be short sequences in neurons and a decoder that give it a unique function.)

The results are pretty great. Essentially, you can use a biological coding system to store digital images. It's far from efficient, and may never come to household use, but this is just a start.

I used CRISPR in my graduate work, immediately after the technology was first published. It's such a revolutionary technique that we'll see medicine and biotech advance at amazing speeds.
