Thank god. This is a step in the right direction. I hope he is healthy after that blood clot surgery he had in December but I am thrilled he will not be back on a football field.
I dunno. I probably don't have the same opinion as what's popular, but I'd rather have Ron than a bunch of the other ACC refs.
In general, they all make shitty calls at some point. Remember, even NFL refs are part time. The difference is Cherry was more memorable in his calls and was more "famous" (as refs go) so you noticed his blown calls more. That said, he at least didn't have biased calls, and wouldn't have let the coaches walk all over him like they let the Duzzy do (the Nard? Not sure what his nickname should be)
"FuckNard" for short.
This^^^^
Honestly, I never thought Ron was that terrible, but I know a lot of folks here have a pretty strong opinion of him.
I enjoyed watching him officiate other teams' games.
My reaction to this was to pump my fist twice and scream "YES" at the top of my lungs.
I regret nothing.
So now who does every ACC fan blame for their team losing?
High Five for retiring, this was a high five right?
FWIW I liked those uniforms.
I loved them, very intimidating look!
To this day I still cannot determine if this was intentional or not. Everything points to it being intentional, but at the same time it makes no sense that a senior would do this in such a critical stage.
Dadi looked directly at him and took a swing at his arm. I wish I could give him the benefit of the doubt without sounding like a complete homer, but I can't. He just let his emotions get the best of him.
I agree it was definitely intentional and I cannot believe he wasn't ejected for it.
Dadi was known for widely gesturing with his hands, in fact he had knocked the tape recorders and mics out of the hands of several reporters prior to this happening.
If I had just inadvertently struck a referee, I'd have made some immediate motion to ensure he knew it was an accident. Not seeing that here. Pretty clear it was intentional IMO.
I always thought of it as Dadi was so mad that even though he mistakenly made contact with the referee, he really did not care he made contact with the referee.
then it's reckless, not an accident. Reckless is a near-equivalent to intentional, just a notch below, but well above accidental.
It was definitely on purpose. Dadi was one of my fav players during that time, but he lost control there. Im guessing he probably regretted it later after cooling down. Cant believe he wasnt ejected. Jimmy Williams was ejected for less.
I know this is counter to most opinions, but . . .
As I've said before, he at least always tried to thoroughly explain his calls (even the weird ones), even though he wasn't always the most eloquent in those explanations. And he always added a level of entertainment during games.
I mean, how often are you waiting for a penalty to hear the ref call it?
Probably Ron's second best call after "giving him the business".
These two calls perfectly sum up his career as an official.
"The ruling on the field of a 1 point safety is confirmed. Oregon gets 1 point on the scoreboard"
Hopefully some of this is in his training plan:
Joey was a whole different animal because after awhile I could just sit back and laugh at his calls. Nothing will ever top the ejection of Timmy D for laughing.
This is always my first reaction when Joey Crawford comes up.
He is going to be Training New officials. Jesus help us.
As long as he's not training them in elocution.
Already good news for the 2017 season!
OK. What does Bye Felicia mean? I'm not hip to the lingo.
From the movie Friday, one of my personal favorites
Brad Kaaya, Miami's QB is the son of the actress playing Felicia
Damn, I was 57 seconds too slow. We said almost the exact same thing with the same gif.
I will pour myself a strong drink now.
Its also in Straight Outta Compton. Dropped as an Easter Egg of sorts by Ice Cube (played by Ice Cube's son). I had no idea why it had blown up recently until I saw that movie a few months back.
It's a reference to the movie Friday. The actress who played Felicia is Brad Kaaya's mom.
Holy Effing Bleep.
I had no idea Felicia was Brad Kaayas's mom. If he actually plays in the NFL, the "Bye Felicia" possibilities are endless...
I could be wrong, but it seems to be said most properly when someone has just thrown a temper tantrum/gone on a rant about something irrelevant and then up and left. Bye Felicia. Don't let the door hit ya where the dog bit ya. Kind of like that.
Yeah, I got the meaning, but I didn't got the meaning. Thank y'all for filling me in. Haven't seen Friday, or Straight, but if/when I do, I'll be fully dipped in the Felicia thang. Um, wait...
Dadi Nicolas approves.
Y'all celebrating this like the bad calls are going to end lol. The entire conference is full of Ron Cherrys. At least he was funny when he sucked.
Don't ruin this for me, we'll cross that bridge in the fall
And the conference might not even be the worst case, as the two most recent times I've been just absolutely enraged by officiating are from bowl games, PAC 12 for the Sugar Bowl and Big 12 for the Belk Bowl.
WORST REF EVER
man, today was already awesome because I could look forward to Shayne Graham's AMA. Ron retiring from field reffing? Well that just puts the Cherry on top.
I actually like Ron Cherry. He had personality and I do not believe he was any worse an official than most others.
Hey Joe, can we get Ron Cherry in here for an AMA now too?!
Can you imagine...
The moderator would have to be plugged with an IV of Red Bull to keep up
Awwww, my mom's going to be so sad! (Yep, she liked him! I think because he explains the calls)
Ron I hope you are completely healthy and are retiring because it's time...Now that I got that out of the way. FUCK YOU RON CHERRY FOR JOBBING BEAMER IN HIS LAST HOME GAME AT VT AGAINST UNC!

+1 for the gif alone
How did he 'job Beamer'?
The UNC catch in OT that was not a catch, but the game was running long so there was no review.
man that pissed me off so much. The ball was stripped mid air and he didn't regain control until he was down out of bounds.
Indisputable visual evidence. That Cherry didn't have time to watch with the 15 seconds he spent "reviewing"
Ooooh yeah I remember that now. Yup bad call.
Well except for the fact that video reviews are upstairs and not on the field in college. Your beef is with the replay official.
Mike from Class of 2006:

:-P
So now Ron will be able to train a whole new generation of referee's to watch for "giving him the business".
I have a neighbor (former guard for UGA) who works as an SEC ref. He got moved to the booth this year because he could not run a fast enough 40 time after being out following surgery. He is quite excited about it, as in the past they would cut you if you could not keep up with the play on the field. No love for Cherry, but he seemed more passionate about the game than unfair, and I want the ACC to treat the ref well - if they will bother to learn and enforce the rules.
My badly photoshoped meme is now
doublytriply outdated:
