OC Cornelsen thrives under Fuente

His ascension to offensive coordinator — now his job description as he enters his second season at Virginia Tech, where he and Coach Justin Fuente migrated after four seasons at Memphis — coincided with Fuente making one of the toughest decisions of his head-coaching career before that 2015 season. He ceded play-calling duties to Cornelsen, but Fuente would have one last hurrah at the controls of the offense at Kansas — allegedly by happenstance.

Before a drive late in the first quarter of Memphis' 55-23 win at Kansas, Cornelsen's headset connection to Fuente on the sideline suddenly went dead. Fuente snapped into action, calling plays like he had in his first three seasons as Memphis' coach and leading the Tigers deep into Jayhawks territory.

Cornelsen is a star in the making that I think gets overlooked by a lot of people.

I get the feeling Brad and Justin could finish each other's sentences.

Some might say "He has quietly made an impression."

Some might!

Others might say he quietly did an impression. or they might not.

Somehow you guys seem to know what I am thinking. It's as if...

Would not have guessed this about Fuente:

I always refer to myself as 'the kid.' I said, 'The kid is back, baby. The kid is back."

...clicked in their first season last fall in Blacksburg, leading Tech to the nation's 33rd-best scoring offense (35 points per game) and 39th-best total offense (444.9 yards per game).

all in year one too. FAM!

Let's Go

HOKIES

He will get his shot at a Head Coaching gig sometime in the near future. Thank God Fuente is an offensive genius. I will have complete faith in anyone he chooses.

What's
Important
Now

He better like talking to the media and boosters more if he is gonna be a head ball coach. Nothing against him just an observation

They do seem to cover the personality spectrum. I liken Bud to 190 proof corn squeezins, while Brad is a Newcastle brown ale. Justin is in between... maybe a Buffalo Trace Bourbon.

Gee, what is on my mind, it must be 5:00 somewhere.

Comparing CJF to a bourbon is great call. Buffalo Trace is good, but I'd go with Baker's: smooth and balanced but with a bit of a bite at just the right time.

In a few interviews when Joining the Hokies, Fuente mentioned all his experiences from Grad Assistant to Illinois State to TCU as learning experiences and he took a lot from those coaches especially Gary Patterson. I hope he ends up creating our own pipeline and there are signs of it already especially with Zorn Burden.

In Fuente and Bud we trust.
