So I came across this article today ... The Long, Storied Controversy Over Cheese on Apple Pie
I have to admit I've never heard of this. Is this seriously a thing? I've had whipped cream on apple pie. I've had ice cream on apple pie. I've even had hot fudge on top of apple pie. But the thought of putting a slice of cheddar on top of apple pie? The thought has never even crossed my mind.
I thought I would solicit opinions from the most outspoken group of pie enthusiasts that I know.

By the way, this quote from the New York times is outstanding:
Team Pie will never be vanquished!

It's certainly not an every day kind of thing, but if the mood fits...
Cheese on pie?
I'd rather eat cake
Let them eat cheesecake
Yup, not only have I heard about it, I have eaten it. Not bad, but I generally prefer the ice cream to the cheese if I am topping my apple pie.
Do the flavors go well together? I've heard about this...as well as putting cheese on honey buns..
Seems super weird to me
Whipped cream is also a very strong contender.
I've tried it. Not bad, but I prefer my pie sans cheese. And we know what French is gonna say.
It does sound like kinda LOLUVA when it you put it that way, doesn't it?
I always thought of loluva as more of a "cream puff cake" kind of school.
LOLUVA doesn't deserve pie. Pie is for winners.
I am #TeamPie all day and I do enjoy a slice of cheddar on my apple pie at times.
My midwestern wife and mother-in-law prefer sharp cheddar when they fix it that way. The bitterness of the cheese goes well with the sweetness of the apple. When forced, I too will enjoy cheddar on my apple pie. However, I prefer to have it served a la mode, with a really good vanilla bean ice cream.
Let's try this again:
CHEESE ON PIE????
A savory pie maybe, but apple pie? I don't get it
Ah, I see you found the right door!
Of course, given the choice of ice cream, or even whipped cream on a slice of apple pie, and I'll likely say yes. Serve me a slice of warm apple pie with a slice of decent cheddar, and I'magonna eat it. The flavors are acceptably paired, think crackers and cheese, with sliced apples on the plate. Don't think I would order it, though.
Funny how things you wouldn't expect, like ginger snaps and beer, can actually taste good. Me, I can't understand how people can eat mayonnaise on a sandwich, or ketchup on a hot dog. Unlike them, cheddar doesn't spoil the apple pie.
"No. No, man. Shit, no man."
Hey Peter, watch out for your corn hole, buddy!
Instead of Cheese on pie do you know what I would do?
I think sharp cheese can go with apple pie, if you use sweet apples and omit the cinnamon. I prefer my apple pie made with tart apples, cinnamon, and topped with vanilla ice-cream and a caramel sauce.
Try cheddar cheese with pancakes and waffles......sweet syrup and the sharp chees.....good eatin'.
What's next after this? Cheese on puddin'????

But what if he saves more than he rapes???
Prepare for DVs from everyone who hasn't seen the Dave Chappelle's bit...
I'll live
The third time I met oj Simpson
Seems legit, anything to get pie to taste decent
Must....not....downvote....opinion....aaarrrgh!
My sister makes a desert for family get togethers that has pineapple, ritz crackers, and cheese. When she first made it I was skeptical, but that shit is delicious.
I am strangely drawn to this
I've had it (not from his sister, of course) and confirm, it's surprisingly awesome.
Read none of the comments... Yes AM cheese on apple pie is old school.
I am disgusted. What a debacle!
For once we agree on something cheese related.
I've heard of cheese on apple pie. It sounds wrong though.
I don't think it would be worse than salt on watermelon though.
Dude man bro... I was raised on salt on watermelon.
Iunno, ask my dad. I don't eat it like that anymore.
Umm how else do you eat watermelon? Same with Cantaloupe.
How else do you eat watermelon? Without salt, as the Good Lord intended.
So I guess you don't season ANY of your foods.
I DON'T SEASON FRUIT! IT'S FRUIT! WHY IS THIS A HARD CONCEPT?
Sounds just as weird.
Do you ever or have you ever added a sprinkle of sugar to cut fruit? Same concept different seasoning.
Umm fruit has sugar already in it naturally.
Shhhh, I think he is on your side.
SO YOU'RE SAYING IT IS NATURALLY SEASONED???????
You forgot to add

With sugar, you know your taste buds respond well to salt AND sugar in the same bite right?
Well why don't we throw all the stuff together? We shouldn't even have tastes anymore. You shouldn't deprive yourself by enjoying a piece of watermelon without sea salt, lime juice, a Carolina Ghost Pepper, and a slab of blackened salmon.
Sugar on a slice of tomato is dope
It's called ketchup.
That would require vinegar too.
Sauce?
No, it's a condiment.
read the ingredients on a ketchup bottle.

It was a circle around joke...

Most fruits are supposed to be sweet, not reminiscent of the Chesapeake Bay.
Adding some crushed or cut (there's a fancy term for the way it's cut, but I don't remember it) fresh mint leaves on watermelon is incredibly tasty and refreshing.
Sounds like you stopped just short of a killer mixed drink. Maybe pulverize the watermelon and add a splash of rum?
There's definitely room for rum in this.
Since I don't drink, it wouldn't have occurred to me, but ok.
Muddled?
I'd probably go 'chiffonade -a preparation of shredded or finely cut leaf vegetables'
Chiffonade would be correct if finely cut, perhaps by using herb scissors, while muddled is the correct term if crushed, usually with an abrasive such as salt or sugar.
Yes, my friend, you have won the prize! A turkey leg for you! Couldn't remember the term.
I have never understood this salt on watermelon thing either. A good, ripe, juicy watermelon might be nature's most delicious (non-bacon) food on its own. But apparently putting salt on it is a thing here in SW Virginia, and perhaps other parts of the south. First time I saw my wife do that, I couldn't fathom why you'd do that either, but questioning salt and watermelon, to a devotee of the practice, is much like questioning the pie/cake debate on TKP. Don't do it unless you're looking to ignite a shitstorm of biblical proportions.
I'll only eat watermelon if it has chili powder on it.
That would probably be better than salt, I think?
I had a mango on a stick with chili powder on it from some Mexican-food vendor at Richmond's Broad-Appetit this year and it was nothing short of magnificent.
I have to say say, this is pretty tasty.
I can imagine the same thing with fresh mango would be pretty awesome.
What is the world coming to? Next thing you know ranch will be great on everything!
I had never heard to cheese and apple pie until I went to Buxton Hall BBQ in Asheville - if there is one restaurant that can do no wrong in the combination of cheese and apple pie, it surely is Buxton Hall.
One of my son's favorite family appetizer is cheese, apple, and fig preserve on toast. It is a great Giada recipe. Can't decide which one is better.
Giada? Oh, you mean cooking with cleavage (as my roommate once called it)
I used to like that show, but the fact that she has to transform her voice back to old-world italy every time she mentions a cheese that is Italian in origin is a little annoying
If you enjoy it, make your crust from scratch and incorporate the sharp cheddar there. All the flavor, no weird consistency issues, and no thoughts of "is that cheese on top of this pie??"
Recipe is involved. Pie is worth it.
