I just found out a buddy of mine is in the hospital due to complications with lyme disease. While his long term prognosis is positive, he's got a temporary pacemaker since his heart isn't beating on it own (waiting for the antibiotics to kick in).
For anyone in areas where you are prone to getting bit by a tick, PLEASE check yourself and be aware of symptoms.
I know TKP isn't a forum for public service announcements, but this kind of stuff comes out of nowhere and just want everyone to be safe. For more information, check out https://www.lymedisease.org
UPDATED: He is off the pacemaker and heart is beating on its own. Feeling much better and should be back at work soon

My wife is convinced we lost our Chesapeake Retriever at 7 to complications from Lyme disease. The vet had confirmed she was carrying the disease several years before but he said without any symptoms there wasn't anything to treat. This was about 7-8 years ago and he once told me that he estimated +75% of the dogs on the East coast were carriers of the bacteria but only about 5-10% of those dogs show symptoms.
Our 12 yr old Golden/Aussie mix has tested positive, but never shown any symptoms to date.
One of my chessie's checks positive but the number is less than 10... so the vet says don't worry about it.
I might be looking for another Chessie soon so if you know a good breed source in western VA please let me know.
I don't know any local breeders. One of mine came from NC and the other from Delaware.

Good PSA and info. Ticks are awful little creatures. I check myself, the dog, and the lady of the house (giggity) frequently.
Hopefully this study kicks in and proves effective.

I saw "Check for TICKS!" in the active discussions and got excited thinking my tickets were in the mail :(
Your disappointment brought a smile to my Monday.
The season football tickets should arrive Wednesday, or Tuesday if you live in Arkansas.
I got the notification yesterday that my tickets will be here today, Tuesday.
Not only can the harbor lymes disease which working in forestry is a bigger deal than most jobs but they harbor my least favorite disease of them all. The ability to make you allergic to red meats, my mother contracted it in her 40s and honestly I'm at a loss for words how she goes through her days without red meat anymore but just incase you guys didn't know it's not just lymes disease, incase you're curious for more info it's carried by the lone star ticks with the white dots on their backs.
