2017 Preseason Camp Day 2: Instagram and Snapchat Review

From Instagram:

1) Tyree Rodgers was matched one on one with Eric Kumah. Rodgers is playing inside leverage with Kumah. He gets a terrific chuck at the line of scrimmage. As Kumah turns his hips inside on the post, Rodgers turns his hips and beats Kumah to the football. This is a terrific coverage play.

2) There is a group of OL that lines up as C-Hoyt, RG-Chung, and RT Plantin working the sled. I may be wrong, but Austin Cannon was with the third group, and it looks like Pfaff is ahead of him at left guard. Again, this is speculation based on the group hitting the sled.

3) Jackson appeared to overthrow a rub route quick out to Dalton Keene in a 7 on 7 drill.

4) Tim Settle does squats and looks trimmer than last year, despite his reported weight.

From Snapchat:

1) Number 1 OL group left side appears to be (not shockingly) Nijman, Teller, and Gallo.

2) #87 (no wide receiver is listed with that number) runs a really nice quick curl in front of a safety. I can't tell if the coverage is from Hunter, but the defender is built like Hunter. The receiver makes the catch and gets away from the defender to the outside.

3) Damon Hazelton (#89, redshirting this season on transfer) goes against Greg Stroman on a fade. Stroman doesn't get his head turned around, but still knocks the ball out with his right hand as Hazelton raises his hands to make the catch.

4) AJ Bush makes a nice throw in rhythm on a deep out. I can't make out the receiver or coverage defender.

5) Josh Jackson throws an out into tight coverage. I can't make out the result.

I wish I had more. I have not seen a single rep of team work. Without eyes on the ground, unless the staff tells us about depth chart was, we will have to draw some pretty thin conclusions based on the tape that gets out.

My two biggest observations were:

1) Stroman got beat on two touchdowns against Tennessee where he failed to break up a pass with his back turned. Defending the pass with your back turned is fine as long as you stick your hand in between the receivers hands and their body so you can disrupt the catch as it is happening. It's good to see that his technique was correct today and that it worked.
2) After practice, Tim Settle was the vocal one in the huddle leading the defense. After qualifying his true freshman year despite many thinking he wouldn't and losing a bunch of weight when he had to, it's great to see him also being a vocal leader in addition to a leader by example. I think he is going to have a breakout year.

From what I've seen, AJ Bush has some nice footwork and a solid arm. Fuente even said, you can't replace experience. I think he'll be more of a contender than people think.

When Bush sets, his feet are a bit too wide for my liking. Hard to adjust into a running position under pressure with that wide of a stance, in my opinion.

I'm not a mechanics expert...I even thought his feet were too far apart

For what it is worth, the OL guys and DL guys look trimmer and more fit than in the past, despite being heavier. Trevon Hill is one guy who looks bulkier (not in a bad way), while Ricky Walker looks more like Woody Baron than last season's Ricky Walker. Nijman looks like an NBA power forward while carrying over 300 pounds. Again- it looks like Fuente wants an athletic OL that can get to the second level and stay engaged on blocks more than the old road grader types at the point of attack.

I love a 300 pound line group that can move. Now, I just hope they can block...
