A van that appeared to have no driver made headlines when it was spotted in Arlington, Virginia, last week. But when News4's Adam Tuss saw the van and looked inside, he saw that it did have a driver: a man dressed in a costume made to look like just a car seat.
Not a great idea in my opinion.

You know, because there are actual driverless cars.
Supposedly to gauge reaction of people when they see the driverless car. Now to test a "driverless car" you still have to have someone in the drivers seat.
I've often noticed people in the drivers seat who don't appear to be driving.
People will be a lot more comfortable texting, eating, reading, and applying makeup when they don't have to pretend they're paying attention to the road.
I'm really hoping that when I'm too old to drive, my car can just take me where I want to go.
As a motorcyclist I am more aware to my surroundings, seeing what people are doing at highway speeds on their phones is insane. I think driverless cars will be developed before phones not operating while driving happens.
I remember driving in a car in iapan in 2004. It had a nifty nav system where you could watch tv, but as soon as you put it in drive it turned off. Surely with all the connectivity in today's vehicles we could disable phones or push through to voicemail/some sort of text equivalent (message purgatory?) whenever the car is in drive.
It's against federal law to use cell phone signal blocking technology. Even prisons have to abide by it which has caused major issues.

But then even passengers can't use their phones. And talking and texting are only two potential distractions on drivers' phones, remember when Pokmon Go was causing an outcry last summer/fall about people playing while driving.
I too believe that we'll have driverless cars before humanity goes extinct.
Given human nature, if you took driving out of the equation the people would probably pay more attention to their surroundings. They couldn't pay less attention.

Why is there a need to post this at all? I get we have a bajillion (approximately) OT threads but this is just odd.
I'll go ahead and acknowledge that I recognize this is related (barely) to Virginia Tech, I didn't have to click on it if I didn't want to, it's still the off-season, and it's the internet.
But this just seems like a post for the sake of a post and doesn't add anything to what this site and community is about. I have nothing else to add. Just felt like I should share my opinion.
Few points.
1) its more than barely related to Virginia Tech, the researchers involved work for the university.
2) It's in the off topic forum. A place where we find many commented threads about: GOT's, video games, movies, food etc etc.
3) you found it so unworthy posting you took time out to comment.

There are plenty of OT posts on here that I completely understand. This is a VT sports community and it wouldn't be the community it is without the OT stuff. But linking an article as the start of a whole new post just because the words "Virginia Tech" are in it doesn't justify it as something that should be posted.
No issue. Just my opinion. I don't run the site. I can't set the rules for what people can and cannot post. But I can share my thoughts.
This is an active research project at Virginia Tech and details of the study are linked in the article. Given that we are a community of VT students, researchers, faculty, and supporters, this seems perfectly reasonable to me. Given the glut of totally random stuff that appears here (some of it worthwhile, some of it not), I think an active research study from VT that uses unusual methods and generates a bit of interesting discussion is perfectly reasonable.
To each their own man. I got a good chuckle out of this to my morning coffee... among other things, it's what I've come to expect from TKP. What's so hard about skipping over an OT that you don't like? I don't watch G.O.T. so I don't click on it.
For me it became relevant when Sands retweeted stories about it.
Come on HF you know the almost 4 year old post about Cake vs. Pie with 30+ new messages today is much more relevant than this. /s
