Ladies and gents this could be a really messy storm for the Texas Gulf Coast. The storm itself isn't particularly strong but parks on the coast when its caught between 2 high pressure centers and drops a ton of rain, measured in feet rather than inches.
Be prepared to evacuate and keep an eye on this system

Saw one model run that suggested north of 3' in or near Corpus Christi, can't remember which one it was. Hopefully that's overblown, but even if it's wrong by 50% that's still an amazing amount of precip. Hope everyone down that way stays safe!
It's HURRICANE Harvey, and is expected to make landfall as a MAJOR hurricane (Cat 3).
That would make it the strongest landfall in the U.S. since 1999. It's going to be a big storm. Eeesh.
EDIT: Actually made landfall as Category 4. Looks like rain of biblical proportions, and to top it all off, looks like it will hover in the area for a few days.
i mean to be fair matthew didnt count as making landfall and was definitely a bigger storm than this one is but was just off the coast of florida

yeah but it made 2 landfalls the caveat there is it wasnt a cat 3 when it first hit florida
Good thing UNC doesn't play and Texas teams this year, otherwise it'd be the second year in a row that they've only played an 11 game season...
For real though, if we have anyone in that area, be safe and don't be stupid! After seeing the damage that 6" of rain did last year in Ellicot City, MD, I can't imagine what a few FEET of rain would even look like.

I'm TDY to San Antonio and was staying through the weekend just to float the Comal river with an old buddy. My favorite thing to do here. Of course the first hurricane Texas has seen in nine years had to show up to ruin that so I'm leaving early.

I assume this is heading straight for all the oil refineries. I'd expect gas prices to shoot up temporarily. Hopefully not.
I trade Crude oil and I can tell you all the oil platforms off the coast are shutdown and they are starting to close the refineries now. Ironically we saw a huge sell off in crude oil today after bullish figures from yesterday's EIA report (inventory). I'm expecting prices to spike tonight and all day tomorrow.
Note to self: Get gas after work.

The refinery I work at will try to ride out the storm. Theoretically Im on call to support operations but if Im flooded in Houston and power goes out I cant really so much.
I had to chuckle just a bit when an Army buddy in Corpus Christi posted on facebook asking for suggestions of where to find sandbags. At least I know he was well trained for this moment.
For those unsure why that's funny, you fill a shit ton of sandbags in your time with Uncle Sam.
And yes, I am both concerned and making jokes at his expense.
My mother in law just flew back from Phoenix to Houston this afternoon. She got a notice before I took her to the airport that her flight out was probably not going to happen, but I guess the weather report was ok for her to get home in time to sit at home and watch out for flooding
Well this thing got big and bad fast. Y'all down there get out or get ready. FEMA task forces and medical teams already headed that direction.
Keeping an eye on the long game for this storm. Heading to Galveston next weekend for a cruise (No Worries, will be enjoying the drink package while we beat down The Cousins)

They usually have some weird choices of about 20 channels, and very few of them have football. Last time I cruised during football season was against Purdue, and only because it was a lop-sided match-up.
We were on Cruise during bowl season several years ago. None of them were on the feed to our room, and the bars could not get it either. Second day and my boys are rushing to get to the kids club as soon as we get back on board. I ask if the club was that much fun, and they said the counselors wre watching the games on tv up there. They would not let me back into the kids area to watch though, so not sure how that helps.

Thanks! The family is hunkered down in Houston (ok, Katy). We've seen some bad rains before and my area drains pretty well so we plan on riding this one out. For those that are around the coast or flood-prone, better to head out.
I've got a bunch of buddies that went to Vegas; that'd a been a good idea too.

Good luck in Katy. I live in the heights/shafy acres and theoretically are in the "never flood" plane. This week ahould put that to the test. The thing I am most worried about is home value dropping if we switch to the "has flooded" category.
