His tape from his Freshman year at Florida shows a quick, mobile, good size kid with a lot of zip on his passes, stands tall in the pocket. He looks MUCH better than Eric Dungey and Phil Summers who have torched Bud recently on the ground. I could see us over-pressuring him, and he just takes off in wide open running lanes. I could see WVU putting up some serious points here. I dont think we want a shoot out given our new QB, and thin WR corps.

WVU's WR core is just as depleted as ours. Their top WR is suspended for our game and their almost their whole o-line had to be replaced this year. I think Grier will be a fine QB but I don't know about the supporting cast around him.
I would argue that they're even more depleted. At least we're returning an All ACC caliber player. WVU returns one guy who caught more than 10 balls last season. We should be able to get away with 0 coverage for most of the game if Bud decides to go that route.
I feel like WVU has proven that WRs are pretty much plug and play for them with the system they run. It's definitely a positive for us that they lack experience, but it doesn't seem to be something most WVU fans are concerned about. From what I've seen and heard, most of their fans are more worried about the d-line and depth on the o-line.
FTFY (game week means the gloves are off)
i would upvote this but 23 is the perfect amount
Wait. No leg because its the perfect count and homage to the Greatest NBA player ever?
I assume they're worried because they don't know who the brother-father is.
Go back
Go back
Go back into the woods
Your uncle is your father
And your team's no good
And people wonder why WVU fans throw batteries at people.
I get the feeling they aren't overly concerned because they think David Sills is a guaranteed all conference performer being completely ignored. He could be a good player but the truth is his performance is even less certain than Grier's.
He is really good
snack time for bud
Grier played what six games and only 2 of them were against P5 competition.
Four games were against P5 teams. He has one good win against the 2015 Ole Miss team. His 6 wins also include an awful game against UK, slightly above average games against Tennessee and Missouri, and wins over ECU and New Mexico State.
He was good enough to hold leads and let a top defense do their job. IMO, there's not enough evidence to suggest that he can carry an offense. We shall see.
Will Grier could end up being Gunner Kiel 2.0. Highly recruited guy who bounces around for a few seasons and ends up burning out. That's a pretty premature judgement for me to make actually, but there's definitely not enough out there to convince me he's an all conference player either.
Stop before you make me like this guy.
Was his game against Tenn and Missouri above average though? His QBR was 51.9 against Tenn and 46.9 against Missouri.
He might be good by the end of this season, but going into the opener with basically nobody to throw to, and nobody to protect him? Against our defense?
I'm not that worried about Mountain Jesus.
I'm worried FOR Mountain Jesus.
I'm not. I have no cares for Mountain Jesus.
OMG. This one is so good. It's up there with the Surprise MFer gif.
RS Freshman making his first start at FEDEX Shithole on National TV scares me more to be honest
Especially against a defense that, while maybe not the best, disguises everything.
Yes, but he won't be alone...
DUCKS (HOKIES) FLY TOGETHER!
Cheesy I know. But someone had to; it has been a while since I've seen the reference.
Will Grier ain't gonna do shit
Grier is good, no doubt. But we played very well last year against top QBs who were drafted by the NFL. I do not believe Grier will be as good this year as Kaaya, Peterman, and Trubisky were last year...and our defense will be even better.
You can't count our performance against Trubisky because it was raining.
Yeah, 31 points worth of rain.
Their bitching and moaning about it has destroyed any kind of empathy I may have for their situation, but you do kind of have to wonder what would have happened if either:
a) it hadn't been a hurricane or
b) LaFed hadn't insisted on jacking it all over the yard despite it being a hurricane and his receivers having obvious problems hanging onto the greased cinder block.
Neither a nor b happened though, so fuck 'em.
I think it's reasonable to say we were the better team last year, regardless. Although at that time, it was definitely a test for both teams.
One team passed, and the other failed.
Trubisky gets a ton of hate from this fanbase but if you go back and watch that game he hit his receivers right in the hands more often than not. Wasn't his fault they dropped them.
But go all in on the fans tho because they are stupid for thinking they only played in the rain.
Not on the two picks.
He hit *somebody* right in the hands more often than not, that's for sure.
That's like requirement #1 to be a QB.
It's like they forgot what happened two years prior when Trubisky was in. ....got a nice lil Fuller pick 6 highlight to remember him by.
my (admittedly ill-informed) take on the WVU passing game:
QB-a question mark, but the talent is there
WR- do they even have WR's with game time experience?
our secondary - normally wouldn't be worried, but our CB coach is the former WVU CB coach, so I'm REALLY not worried
On the other side, we have all our questions marks stacked up against their incredibly inexperienced CBs. I say we edge them when we're on offense and embarrass them when we're on defense.
WOOOO GAME WEEK!!!!!!
CALL US APPALACHIAN PILATE BECAUSE WE ABOUT TO MURDER MOUNTAIN JESUS!
EDITED PILOT TO PILATE BECAUSE PEOPLE ARE SMARTER THAN I.

Didn't realize until i read this comment that it was supposed to say "pilate"
I was wondering if it had something to do with Flying J myself...
What did it say before that, crosstrainer?
"pilot"
Not sure if serious....

Better not send Settle. This is what happened the last time someone tried that on me
Have you been drinking? I mean, no judgment, I've been drinking, but you are yelling a lot.
I'M VERY SOBER. THAT MAY BE THE ISSUE.
Meh. As long as we're not giving them the ball in the red zone (Bristol will scar me for some time) I have no reason to doubt this monster defense right now.
Fam, I've been thinking about this a lot lately, and it's totally my fault. after we went up 14-0 I kinda remember leaning over to my dad 3 rows from the top of Bristol and slurring something about how bud's defense is still spun up and fuente's got an offense and we're going to kill everyone. He immediately slapped me for jinxing it. Clearly he didn't hit me hard enough, and it's entirely my fault.
I will forever remember that as the best first quarter I have experienced
UT fans were soooo smug going in. Their silence going into the 2nd quarter was deafening.
And then 2+ hours of goddamn motherfucking rocky top.
ETA: WOOOO!
Burn Him!
Sure this is a concern but when we struggle with overpursuit it almost hasn't mattered how mobile the opposing QB is. We've bottled up JT Barrett and had guys like Chad Voytik and Matt Johns really hurt us. The D line has to be sound and it is a concern with the lack of depth and when starters get winded.
The best kept secret of the VT fanbase is that everyone struggles to stop a running QB at one point or another.
Mobile QBs are problematic for most teams but the heartburn for many VT fans could result from guys like Voytik and Johns burning us when other teams don't struggle containing them. What should be recognized is that one of the things that allows Foster to gain an advantage is that he does not play it safe and depends on every defender to know and do his job. It's not without risk but generally the coaches teach the players to execute and it provides more benefits than detriments.
Johns running was a surprise, much like Peyton Manning or Tom Brady taking off. Hard to plan for something that someone almost never does, like that Pitt offensive tackle getting a rushing TD on us.
Is it really a surprise for someone with the ball to run when their receivers are covered but the defenders have their backs turned or aren't within 30 yards and there's no one in front of you? Even Peyton Manning would take 10 and slide down in that situation.
So can we finally conclude that Bud's scheme is vulnerable to
running quarterbacksquarterbacks running? Before our game in 2015, on the season he had run 55 times for 28 yards (slightly over 0.5 ypc).
Based on that, I'd say him taking off running and getting 9.7 ypc against us was a surprise, yes.
Makes me think of this
Watching Timecop get mad over Stroman hitting his quarterback before he was out of bounds never gets old.
Instead of continuing out of bounds, Johns pulls up and faces upfield.
Suck it, London!
True..but Eric Dungey, Phillip Summers, Chad Voytik don't look like heisman candidates against anyone else. There is a flaw in Bud's current scheme- yes that's relative I know- but there is a clear flaw that running QBs - like that backup stiff from GT last year and Murphy from BC exposing all game long. Foster plays aggressive- always has, and has blitzes and coverages that leave one defender to play the QB run perfectly or- else. Holgerson- like Riley when he was at ECU and Babers are offensive guys smart enough to expose this. I still can't believe Brian Kelly didn't run his QB more against us.
Brian Kelly is not a very good coach.
I talk about it more in the offensive preview. Can Grier run? Yes, and well. Will he? That is a tougher call. This is a big game for WVU, but they have no depth at QB. Will Holgersen risk hurting Grier with the Big12 schedule looming? Tough call.
I dunno. he strikes me as a "grab life by the balls" kind of guy that doesn't think too far into the future. I expect Grier to run a lot.
He can grab whatever he wants by whatever he wants as long as he stays down 3 touchdowns.
Yea when you're down by 3 TDs in the 3rd you may as well rub one out.
He's certainly no Justin Fuente
Don't let Dana rubbing one out while losing to Texas distract you from the fact that Kansas beat Texas. Which by the transitive property means Kansas beat WVU.
As much as I don't want to distract from pointing out that WVU sucks, that's not how the transitive property works.
For that to work, Texas would have had to beat either WVU or a team that beat WVU, and they did neither.
Watching Florida right now, it just seems like if their QB has nothing he scrambles for close to 10 yards. Could just be the offense he was previously in.
Their OL has a lot of holes in it...hard to complete passes when Tim Settle and co are in your grill all game long
If Tim Settle can stay fresh enough through 4 quarters to stay in their grill all game long we'll be in good shape.
and that's why need to force three-and-outs followed by nice long sustained TD drives. Give big Timmy rest and have him play every down.
Preview of Mountain Jesus' helmet cam as Settle approaches
They killed Kenny!
You bastards!
lot to ask of a big man.
Thats my point..,several times on his tape he is pressured and just takes off running for big gains.
The ball is going to come out real quick.
I still get a sour stomach when I think about the Syracuse game. My fear is: worst case scenario for the WV Offense against our Defense looks like that again. What are the possibilities for that?
Unfortunately the odds are greater than 0, so I will worry until the game is over with the Hokies having more points.
Whelp, now we know who to blame when Grier post 200 run yards on us, dc(voodoo)wilson40
Our Answer to Will Grier: Tremaine Edmunds
He is a very good QB. Teaser- his Florida film has one flaw. I will share it in my offensive preview.
Is his flaw that he has never played the Hokies?
That makes me feel better. If he has a noticeable flaw, then Bud has likely picked up on it.
HAHA! I'm glad you went there.
if I had the time I would make a sweet ass meme with this in mind.
not sure what the "one" flaw here is....
a 50% completion rate?
Using banned substances like Ligandrol?
I also agree he is legit QB with stud, NFL-1st round-type potential. That said, to my untrained but s-ton-of-football-watching eye, he doesn't set his feet very well. This is especially the case after he gets rattled with some hits. He seems to feel ghosts in the pocket, and gets happy feet that results in some throws sailing and going off-target. I noticed this the most in the 2015 Tennessee game: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5A-_Gr2UiEg
If that's the case, here's to hoping our front four and especially Hill can rattle him early and often!
He definitely doesn't mind slinging it deep off the back foot. That should be good for at least 1 pick with our secondary
I saw a lot of air under those deep balls. His downfield arm strength has likely improved some in the past two years. But if he lofts it up like that on Sunday, our secondary is way too fast to not pick a couple off.
You didn't internet hard enough on this. Maybe try:
Beat Grier with this one weird trick...
247 put out an article on betting advice for games featuring new QB's. They had this to say about our game...

You're right. Will Grier is very good.
Which will make a VT victory all that much more sweet. It's not like Bud hasn't given this game some thought. When he focuses on a game, he comes up with some righteous game plans. Sure, it's going to require some execution. But surprise! VT has both defensive execution and an offense.
Put it on the line, but bring that Black Diamond trophy back to papa.

I think I actually said this out loud during the ECU game last year. Very appropriate for the current state of VT football.
Bud is generally pretty good at shutting down a running qb. Our issue is a thrower than runs unexpectedly. So just plan for him running (hopefully from Timmy or Vinny every play)
Did you type this as you were ordering your Wil Grier jersey off fanatics? Come on man you are Hokie start acting like it. No faith
I do not get why so many people are hyping him up because of his Florida game footage. Do we not forget why he's not at Florida right now? Dude got popped for juicing. Everything you were watching in those Florida tapes were the result of him cheating.
I'm surprised that so many have this reaction. Grier might be getting too much hype but he's undoubtedly more of a known factor than Jerod Evans was last year.
I understand that he was formerly a good recruit. However, nothing in his Florida tape makes me all that nervous. He's got talent, size, and arm strength, but he never really played all that well at Florida, IMO.
It's not like he's Jarrett Stidham. I'd be much more nervous facing Stidham than Grier. At least Stidham had some success.
Slightly OT, but McElroy was asked which of the two he'd like to watch this weekend, and he said Grier vs. an excellent defense will be more telling, and that he still remembers his first start against Bud's defense and that it was rough.
I mean, that's fair since Stidham is going against GSU's defense.
Grier vs. VT's D week 1, Stidham vs. Clemson's D week 2. Both should be very interesting.
Grier's numbers that year weren't much better than Motley's.
Just sayin'...
I think Jackson will out play Grier in this game. Im not saying that jus cause he's ours!
Bud will bring the Heat , Grier will furnish the Meat, his Rear. Simple cooking .. Bud Style. Burn and Flip..
Wasn't he the guy who was kicked out of Florida for steriod use or something.
I'm real iffy on the potential of a guy who isn't juicing anymore, with no oline, no WR...
I mean I could be wrong but maybe it was the roids fueling him a bit.
Roids make you bigger, they don't to my knowledge make you an accurate passer.
We'll find out Sunday how accurate he is. Hopefully under pressure.
they do help with the zip on the ball, though
Performance enhancing drugs don't just make you bigger. Anebolic steroids give you an increased intensity and faster muscle recovery. You can push yourself harder, and you end up improving what you work on. If you take them and run you get faster. If you take them and lift you get stronger/bigger.
If you are constantly slinging a ball around then you probably do get more accurate when using PEDs.
Well, WVU certainly has a test case rolling off the assembly line.
