Oh thats cool....I guess. I know the match-ups in week 4 aren't great, but it seems like a sorry excuse not to go to someones campus. They could at least visit a school they have never been to before.

I don't know - but Mark Packer on SiriusXM College Sports yesterday said it best:
"If there is a city in the United States that I want to go to on a Saturday in September, October, or November - in the fall - to get away from college football, it is New York City. That city is a pro sports town."
This is the absolute worst decision that ESPN has ever made regarding College Gameday - and who knows, it could be a hit. But when College Gameday goes to any campus, it becomes an event for that school, and it is what makes College Gameday the best produced show on an otherwise lackluster ESPN network. I just cannot fathom WHY they would choose to go to NYC over ANY campus in the country.
You just stated the reason. NY is a pro sports city. They are trying to change that. With more than 8 million residents there is a huge volume of untapped potential for tv ratings not only for game day but the games that follow as well.
There are great watch parties for pretty much every FBS and a few FCS teams all over NYC. Yes most of the population doesn't care but even a small percent of 8 plus million is a lot of people.
Pro Tip: Avoid the The Ainsworth on fall Saturday nights, that place is just rolling with Bama fans.
They are probably going to go to Oklahoma State for Bedlam since it's in Stillwater this year.
Disappointing, I wish they would do at least one FCS vs FCS game a year
Since they went to JMU for the Richmond game a few years ago, I've been hoping they return the favor and go to Richmond. It's close, and my wife went there.
Actually, I was really hoping they would go there last year so I could hold a sign "UVA LOST TO RICHMOND."
There's been a push for them to do JMU vs. Villanova on 10/14 and it's allegedly on "the list." I hope they do end up going to that one, since I'll be going anyway.
They usually do a rando location once a season. Later in the year in a down week, you'll likely see them head to a FCS location as well.
That said, I'm very glad they're doing this Week 4 instead of Week 5. Highly unlikely they'll do an off-the-wall location twice in a row, and given the competition for that spot, hosting GameDay seems to be fully in our own control at this point.
I think I saw JMU trying to lobby for GameDay on Twitter or Facebook, but can't remember which weekend they were talking about.
The likely weekend for Gameday at JMU will be 10/14 against Villanova.
There's a chance that Villanova will be top-5 in FCS if they win until then, and their only loss is a 3-point defeat to Temple.
Depends on a lot of other outcomes though, as that's the same weekend as OU-Texas, Auburn-LSU, TCU-K State, Tenn-S. Car and Utah-USC. But it's conceivable that a lot of those matchups will lose their luster given some likely losses in that group of teams. We shall see.
Red River rivalry is still the likely candidate I think.
Even with Texas going into that game no better than 3-2, and likely 2-3 or worse?
I think that game always has an appeal (lots of footage, history, etc). Not sure how the other matchups will stackup by then, but I think the RRR game always has a leg up on the others.

Prior to the 1993 FSU-Notre Dame game, it was exclusively broadcast from the studio. I seem to recall them broadcasting from the studio a handful of times over the years when there was no match-up of interest, but I believe this is the first time they are broadcasting from another location where there isn't a game being played.
They do that a lot for ACC basketball games over the course of the year. I remember it happening to us a few times last year.

I agree, they should find a decent game at any collegiate level (FBS, FCS, Div. 2, Div. 3, NAIA, etc.) and visit their campus. The Times Square thing makes no sense to me. NYC couldn't give a rat's ass about college football - it's all about the Giants or the J-E-T-S up there.
In gonna go ahead and bet on it being a packed crazy crowd. That's a very large population to pull fans out of. Not to mention the every day tourists.
I'm ok with it. Largest city in the US. Lots of fans of lots of different teams plus tourists.
It'll be like the first night of the draft, but for college football. Just show up in your team's gear to yell and boo a lot.
Fun fact - Virginia Beach is the most populated city in VA at over 400K. I had no idea... your post made me curious.
Another fun fact: Virginia cities, being "Independent Cities" that are geographically separate from any county, are treated as "county equivalents" by the US Census Bureau. Therefore, according to the Census Bureau, Virginia Beach is not the largest "county or county equivalent", because Fairfax County has over 1.1 million people in it.
This fact is made even more interesting when you find out that Virginia Beach is actually larger in land area than Fairfax County, making Fairfax County over 3 times as densely populated as the most-populous city in the state.
That explains the taxes...
As someone who dealt with government per diem data for years, last I checked there were 38 "county equivalent" cities in the US, and all but three of them were in Virginia. It complicated the data immensely, and made me irritable towards my home state. It's also interesting to learn that counties (or parishes, down in the bayou) are the standard across the US except in places like Mass and Conn, where counties are essentially lines on a map with no central government or authority. Townships hold all the authority in those places.
And to bring this back to the main point of the thread, each of the five boroughs of New York are coterminous with a county. Richmond (Staten Island, aka Shaolin Land), Kings (Brooklyn), Queens, Bronx, and since they are obnoxiously self-centered, New York County (Manhattan).
There is also a YOLO County in California, which was timely and hilarious when I learned this like five years ago.
Close, there are 38 in Virginia and 3 in other states (Baltimore is one, Carson City is another, but I can't remember the third)

Since it didn't warrant a new post, this seems like the best place for this little anecdote.
I had a guy from the Census Bureau in my office today. Nice older gentleman from Dublin who played some high school ball against ol' CFB. We talked football for a good little bit and he had a funny story about being cursed at by Beamer. He was apparently going to block CFB on a play and CFB had slipped and was on his way to falling when this guy hit him. CFB got back up and yelled at him that he was already falling.
Not a particularly enthralling story, but I got a kick out of it.
I like to think Frank called him Palsey when he was yelling.
I imagine the shoes Beamer was wearing were those inflexible clodhoppers with hard plastic screw-on cleats that sported metal tips better for piercing an opponents lower limbs than the field. They were awful.
Also speaking of Beamer, here's a video (Tech vs. Alabama 1968) of a Coach Claiborne team with Beamer at right corner. Our D played Bama tough. It might be possible to note the influence on Beamer's offensive philosophy. And were we ever slow. Al Kincaid, who ended up as a Coach at Giles before departing for some spot at Bama that eventually led to head gigs at Wyoming and Arky State, was not a good quarterback. But "Coach said he played so he played".

It didn't take that long for me.
On an interesting (if slightly depressing) note, I went through the list of College Gameday locations, and found that we are 4-1 in games where Gameday visits Blacksburg, and 0-8 in games played away from Blacksburg that are visited by Gameday. Hopefully we continue one of those trends in a few weeks...
I believe that they said last year that Corso is perfect when making a headgear pick for a VT game. Meaning, when he puts the Hokie Bird on, we win, and when he picks the other team, they win.
So, I'm perfectly content with them coming to Blacksburg on 9/30 and having Corso put a Hokie on his head.

Looking at the schedule, I'm really glad USC vs. Washington State is on a Friday Night. If both teams end up undefeated Pullman could have been a potential gameday location. I'm sure ESPN will do a "special" gameday cast similar to when we played Ohio State at home.
